Not per box, but per cigar! That's a tax of $250 per box of 25 cigars regardless of the price of the cigar. As a representative of the J.C. Tom Tancredo of Colorado is a cigar smoker of the first stripe and was part of a dust-up over smoking in his office with an aide to a Representative in the next office. Tancredo continues to smoke and enjoys Perdomo Reserve cigars among others.
• Undeclared but possible Republican candidate Fred Thompson of Tennessee is a cigar smoker as well and reportedly has a preference for Cuban cigars . . . when he can get them. He’s been shown smoking in many of his film and television appearances and had a cigar in hand in his brilliant video retort to a challenge by filmmaker Michael Moore to a debate.

On the other side is the possible independent candidature of billionaire ex-Republican Michael Bloomberg, currently the Mayor of New York. A former smoker, he is virulently anti-tobacco and not only pushed through the New York smoking ban, but promised $125 million of his own fortune to “help” push the anti-tobacco message worldwide.

Listing Courtesy of CigarCyclopedia

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-5285613556728623942007-06-20T13:57:00.000-07:002007-06-20T14:06:41.210-07:00Cigar Shacks!
Here's a great idea that one hotel company in the UK is doing to thwart the smoking ban due to take effect in England next month.....perhaps we can convince them to do the same here in the U.S. where smoking bans are prominent? Courtesy of Cigar Insider:

With England’s smoking ban going into effect July 1,
one upscale hotel chain in the United Kingdom has
begun to provide smoking asylums for England’s disenfranchised
cigar enthusiasts. Many Hotel du Vin locations
are building outdoor Cigar Shacks to accommodate their
smoking clientele. The initiative is a collaboration between
CEO Robert Cook and John Harris of Bothy Lodge Co.,
a Scotland-based company contracted to build the shacks.
“I had to do something to combat the smoking ban and
uphold the values of the Hotel du Vin, so we created
an exclusive space for our guests to enjoy their cigars,”
said Cook.

The hexagonal structures measure 8 by 4 meters and are
constructed primarily of larch wood. Most of the construction
is done at the Bothy Lodge factory before the
large pieces are brought to the hotels, thus reducing installation
time to only a few days. Each shack costs £40,000
(about $79,000) to build and includes amenities such as a
whiskey and Armagnac cabinet, a well-stocked humidor
and a wall-mounted plasma gas fire. The humidors and
liquor cabinets are locked, but the ring of a buzzer will
promptly summon service. Although 50 percent of the
structure is open to the elements, the under-floor heating
and warm-air curtains will ensure that guests stay cozy during
colder weather. The interior is designed and furnished
to exude a luxury lounge feeling, giving smokers the
impression that the Cigar Shack is an extension of the hotel
rather than simply an auxiliary space.
The decision to install the shacks was not purely a hospitality
move, but also economically motivated. According
to Cook, Hotels du Vin bring in $600,000 a year from
cigar sales, making the chain one of the largest, if not the
largest, hotel purveyor and customer of Havana cigars.
One Cigar Shack is up and running in the Hotel du Vin
in Glasgow, Scotland. Other Cigar Shacks are scheduled to
open in the outdoor gardens of the Hotel du Vin
Winchester, Tunbridge Wells, Henley-on-Thames and
Cheltenham this summer. Other locations will have them
later in the year and into 2008. For those Hotels du Vin
that do not have outdoor gardens, Cook plans on designing
interior smoking sanctums in compliance with the law.
“We have always nurtured the Havana culture in the
U.K. Cigars are in our blood, in the Hotel du Vin’s DNA,”
he said.

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-40193477801239710992007-06-15T15:56:00.000-07:002007-06-15T16:05:17.208-07:00Sir Winston Churchills Cigar Humidor on the Block

Among his fellow Britons as well as cigar smokers, Winston Churchill is iconic. So it should have been no surprise when a humidor presented to Churchill upon his election to the House of Commons in 1900 from the town which elected him – Oldham – sold for 13 times more than expected.Sold as a part of a large program of 20th Century items by Christie’s last week, the humidor (pictured above) started life as a cabinet, which was converted by adding four cigar trays. It was one of several gifts given to Churchill by The Primrose League, a Conservative organization. The lid bears an engraved plaque which is inscribed “Presented to Mr. W.S. Churchill on being elected Member of Parliament for Oldham, 1st October 1900.”Expected to earn 1,000-1,500 British pounds ($1,967 to 2,950 U.S.), the item brought £14,400 or about $28,324!Nick Worskett of Christie’s told the Manchester Evening News that the items were on the market for the first time. Why did the humidor do so well? “Simple,” he said, “the association. Churchill, cigars . . . it had everything going for it and did extremely well.”It wasn’t the only piece of cigar memorabilia at the sale. A cigar punch in the shape of an owl, also a gift to Churchill upon his election in 1900, was sold for £1,200 (about 2,360 U.S.).

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-74263762822681132282007-06-13T12:19:00.001-07:002007-06-13T12:23:38.802-07:00U.S. Cuban Cigar ViolationsLos Angeles, June 13 – The government office responsible for monitoring violations of the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba has U.S. cigar smokers in its sights. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a department of the U.S. Treasury, has handed out seven penalties so far this year with fines totaling $13,712.75 to Americans who “purchased Cuban-origin cigars offered for sale on the Internet.”That’s a high level of enforcement compared to past years. For example, in all of 2006, OFAC handed out only two such penalties, and late in the year, with fines totaling $2,189. Most of the penalties issued by OFAC to individuals prior to the fourth quarter of last year were for unauthorized travel to Cuba or the sale of goods or services by companies without an OFAC license to do so.In the cigar cases handed down so far this year, penalties ranged from a low of $820 to a high of $6,088.85 for violations ranging from a single case to multiple instances:• April: a fine of $820.00 for an individual who bought Cuban cigars on the Internet in 2005.• April: a fine of $1,071.90 for an individual who bought cigars in 2004 and 2005.• May: a fine of $6,088.85 for an individual who bought cigars from 2003-06.• May: a fine of $1,261.00 for an individual who bought cigars in 2006.• June: a fine of $856.00 for an individual who bought cigars in 2002-03.• June: a fine of $1,311.00 for an individual who bought cigars in 2004.• June: a fine of $2,304.00 for an individual who bought cigars in 2005-06.It’s worth noticing that as OFAC acquires records of transactions going back as far as five years, it is imposing fines, no doubt based on the number and size of the violations. In addition, OFAC has sent letters to smokers with U.S. addresses who are suspected of being customers of Internet sites which ship Havana cigars into the United States. So while the practice continues, the U.S. Government has increased its vigilance of the Cuban cigar trade into the U.S.

To read the entire article, please click the link on the title of this article.
Courtesy: CigarCyclopedia

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-9690036160542566232007-06-08T11:39:00.000-07:002007-06-08T11:42:37.678-07:00The Stanley Cup and Cigars!Congratulations to the Mighty Anaheim Ducks for capturing their first ever Stanley Cup Championship! - HV

Cigars and the Cup:As the Anaheim Ducks wrapped up the first Stanley Cup championship by a California team in front of a raucous crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim last night, fans who had access to the VIP Lounge were treated to champagne . . . and cigars! The bubbly was flowing freely among the fans in the lounge, but despite the ban on indoor smoking in California, specially-made “Stanley Cup Champions” cigars were handed out. Gov. Schwarzenegger recently was in Canada attending a trade meeting and stopped at a local hotel to buy a cigar. It appears it was a Cuban cigar and now the media is focusing in on whether he broke the law. Remember, our dumb-ass laws right now prohibit American citizens from smoking a Cuban cigar anywhere in the world! That's right, anywhere in the world. And the penalty if you do? Fines and/or imprisonment! Is this the dumbest law on the books or what?

Click here for the full sad story.

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-12752592251030612222007-06-01T10:07:00.000-07:002007-06-01T10:11:39.135-07:002007 Cigar Imports Chugging AlongThe Cigar Association of America recently released the latest trends in cigar imports into the U.S. What the numbers show is that despite a ton of anti-smoking chatter and new taxes and regulations, the cigar industry is doing...well...quite well!

The Cigar Association of America’s report for March 2007 showed another increase against one year prior and end the first quarter with imports running nicely ahead of 2006:

• Premium cigar imports totaled 25.8 million for March, up 4.8% over the 24.6 million that entered the U.S. March of 2006.• For the first quarter of 2007, imports totaled 60.3 million, up 3.5% over the 58.3 million for the first three months of 2006.

• As usual, the Dominican Republic dominated import totals, with 14.4 million or 56% of the total. For the first quarter, Dominican imports totaled 33.2 million, up 11.4% from last year.

• Honduras maintained its second-place status, but import totals fell for the month and for the first quarter. March imports totaled 6.1 million, down from 6.6 million the year before and for the quarter, imports were down from almost 15 million in 2006 to 13.6 million, nearly a 10% decline.

• Nicaraguan imports were also down slightly. For March of 2007, imports reached 4.7 million, down slightly from the 4.9 million a year earlier. For the first quarter, imports were down almost four percent to 12.7 million compared to 13.2 million for 2006.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-33268277946807005382007-04-27T20:53:00.000-07:002007-04-27T20:56:04.573-07:00Cigar Imports Steady So Far in 2007!Los Angeles, April 25 – One of the most commonly used measures of cigar popularity in the U.S. is the monthly report of cigars imported into the country. It’s developed from data reported by the U.S. Customs Service by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. On that measure, the renaissance of cigar smoking and enjoyment is continuing. The figures for February showed 23,095,000 premium (handmade) cigars imported into the U.S., a 3% decline from the same period in 2006, but still good.As usual, the Dominican Republic was the leader, with 12.84 million cigars entering the U.S., a little better than the 12.64 million brought in during February 2006. Nicaraguan imports were also up a little, to 4.53 million against 4.50 million last year.Only Honduran imports were down, losing almost 15% of last year’s total at 5.63 million compared to 6.61 million in 2006. Small amounts of cigars also came in from Mexico (65,000) and the Philippines (24,000).For the year, the figures are good and even slightly ahead of the roaring year in 2005. Through February, some 34.49 million premiums have been imported into the U.S., compared to 33.64 million last year and 32.45 million in 2005.

Courtesy:

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-20055008566265628132007-04-24T11:26:00.000-07:002007-04-24T11:29:00.568-07:00Old Red Sox Ace Still Smokin'A pitcher who won 20 games or more four times, had a career earned-run-average of 3.30 and won 229 games in his career would probably command a salary of $10 million or more a year.
Luis Tiant is, instead, heading up El Tiante, Inc., which sells the El Tiante 23 Series cigar line made in Nicaragua at the Tabacalera Tambor. He also works as a pitching instructor in the Red Sox minor-league organization. But you can see him in cigar stores throughout the Northeast, where the El Tiante is sold. A recent appearance at the Owl Shop in Worcester, Massachusetts, was noted in the local Telegram & Gazette:“El Tiante has always been a cigar smoker,” wrote reporter Clive McFarlane. “Some of his fans, forgetting that memory has a way of fading with time, will insist that a Havana cigar was either sticking out of his mouth, or lying somewhere on the mound, when he was a pitcher in the Major Leagues. It is not surprising then, that he would get into the cigar business.”And it’s working for Tiant, who many think should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. But he’s not, but he told the reporter that he’s making more today than he did as a baseball player. And, “This game and this country have been good to me. Everywhere I go, people make me feel good, because they respect what I have done. You can’t buy that with all the money in the world.”

Courtesy: CigarCyclopedia.com

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-79415921354816870422007-04-02T11:09:00.001-07:002007-04-02T11:13:36.627-07:00Casa Fuente Las Vegas Sues to Smoke!ANYONE WHO HAS VISITED THE CASA FUENTE SHOP in The Forum Shops at
Caesars in Las Vegas has probably smoked a cigar on the popular patio out front. The Las Vegas smoking ban has threatened the patio privileges for those visiting the Fuente showcase store. The patio and store sit inside a mall where, according to the law, no smoking is allowed, but the patio is also part of the store itself, where smoking is permitted. Michael Frey, part owner of Casa Fuente, sued this month to keep the patio open for smoking. “I am a cigar store,” said Frey. “The law exempts cigar stores. So it does not matter that half of the store is in the mall. I am exempt according to Nevada state law.” A temporary restraining order is in effect, so smoking continues, but it is scheduled to expire tomorrow, the same day the Clark County District Court will ultimately decide if the patio at Casa Fuente can go on being cigar-friendly.

Courtesy "Cigar Insider"

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-79194732638032520532007-03-15T14:59:00.000-07:002007-03-15T15:00:56.609-07:00Altadis Receives Approach From Imperial TobaccoMADRID -- Spanish-French tobacco company Altadis SA said Thursday it received an unsolicited approach from U.K.-based Imperial Tobacco Group PLC, in the latest signal that the global tobacco industry is poised for dramatic consolidation.
The preliminary offer of €45 ($59.53) per Altadis share, valuing the manufacturer of Gitanes and Ducados brands at €11.52 billion, represents a 15.7% premium from Wednesday's closing price of €38.89.

Altadis, which currently has a market value of around €9.96 billion, said in a statement that its board will meet in coming days to discuss the offer. For those of us who have been faithful Sopranos fans, we cannot wait to see the next nine episodes, but some of us will be wondering just what the heck are we going to do on Sunday nights after the last episode airs? I mean, Jack Bauer will have already saved the world from nuclear holocaust by then I am sure. But that is on Monday nights. So, to help prepare you for the moment, the latest issue of Cigar Aficionado has a great interview with David Chase, the writer of the Sopranos, along with interviews of Frank Vincent, Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli. The article has all kinds of suspected endings offered by Cigar Aficionado readers....so how do you want it to end?

Officially.....we don't want it to end!

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-90114908336941046442007-03-02T08:48:00.000-08:002007-03-02T09:07:28.724-08:00A Great Year for CigarsThe Cigar Association of America released the full year 2006 report on cigar imports and it showed that the U.S. imported a little over 311 million premium cigars. That is only the fifth time that imports have topped the 300 million mark and it was also the fourth highest ever. 2006 results of over 300 million made it the trifecta for consecutive years over the somewhat magical 300 million mark.

The top three exporters to the U.S. were the usual suspects: Dominican Republic at just over 171 million exported, Honduras at #2 with just over 80 million and Nicaragua coming in third with just over 56 million cigars exported to the U.S. Six other countries contributed smaller amounts to the U.S. market and all cigar smokers I am sure appreciate their efforts!

So another year over 300 million imports to the U.S? You guys are buying cigars like their going out of style! Keep up the good work, and if you need to buy an additional or larger cigar humidor for all these cigars your buying...drop us a line...we know of this great place to buy great cigar humidors!

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-91208651906351971752007-02-20T21:24:00.000-08:002007-02-20T21:46:23.814-08:00World's Most Expensive Cigar? That was for a new Cohiba product that sold for $18,000 for 40 cigars to a drum. Well, Gurka couldn't contain themselves and have produced the most expensive cigar in the world. Coming in at a mere $14,999.95 (clever how they shaved that nickle off eh?) for a box of 20 or $750 for a single stick! "His Magesty's Reserve (HMR) is produced in extremely small quantities of less than 100 boxes per year. The cigar consists of a rare aged Dominican wrapper encompassing a secret blend of fillers from around the world. Once rolled, the cigars undergo a unique fusion process that entails a full bottle of Louis XIII Cognac.

Because of the small quantities that are produced yearly, only a few retailers are chosen for this product. Our friends at Cigar.com will be glad to assist you, I am sure, in purchasing a box or two! Click here for more information on this rare Gurka.

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-41477639066866805422007-02-13T09:57:00.000-08:002007-02-04T23:38:11.024-08:00Are You A Cigar Nut? International through its wholly-owned subsidiary ST Cigar Group was only the latest in a continuing trend of European acquisition of the American cigar industry.

That ST Cigar Group – best known for its top-selling brand, Henri Wintermans – bought C.A.O. was not a shocker. The two companies had been working together since 2004 when an ST Cigar Group company began distributing C.A.O. cigars in Great Britain.

But the purchase now places most of the top U.S. cigar distribution companies in European hands, a trend which is likely to continue. Until the Cigar Boom of the mid-1990s, almost all of the major cigar distributors serving the U.S. market were American owned. That changed quickly toward the end of the decade:............

To read the full article from our friends at CigarCyclopedia...click the link in the title above or click here.

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-59644329260904495072007-01-31T21:19:00.000-08:002007-01-31T21:32:30.814-08:00"Stinky" Wait Almost Over! The wait for the much anticipated "Stinky Cigar Herf Edition Ashtray" is almost over. Colder weather always plagues cigar humidors as it has a drying effect and knocks down your humidity levels.

Try adding some passive devices to your humidors. Madelaine Crystal Gels come in small jars that can easily fit in almost any size humidor. These add an immediate humidity boost and they also help prevent mold as well. Or just try a small dish of distilled water or PG Solution to your humidors for a quick boost in humidity.

When the warmer weather rolls around you will be able to remove these passive devices as you will no longer need them.

Good luck and Good Smoking!

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-11713150024189721822007-01-05T16:14:00.000-08:002007-01-05T16:27:24.072-08:00Smoke a Cuban Cigar in London? Better Watch Out!Ok, here is some real insanity. The rules as they apply to Cuban Cigars and U.S. Citizens are a little tighter it seems. Our friends at CigarCyclopedia have an excellent piece that reveals an interesting and completely insane rule as it pertains to Cuban Cigars and U.S. Citizens. Seems that if we U.S. Citizens happen to visit let's say London in the UK, and we purchase a Cuban Cigar and smoke it over there, we are still violating the Cuban Embargo. The article states that some U.S. Citizens have received letters from the U.S. Government regarding their purchases in the U.K.

So be careful!

To view the entire article click the link in the title of this post.

Humidor Vaultnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35584128.post-27373778164142070582006-12-07T20:26:00.000-08:002006-12-07T20:32:45.019-08:00Heavenly Works of Art. She’s also been well known in the cigar trade for wild promotions, most famously her troupe of “Heavenly Angels” who appear in stores nationwide to promote the brand, always wearing their white wings. Not to mention the seven-foot-tall Hawaiian Angel or the road trips in the bright yellow Heavenly Hummer. But she’s decided to walk on the wild side for the 2007 edition of the annual Angel’s Calendar. Unlike any of her previous calendars – and any we have ever seen attached to cigars – Phillips commissioned a layout that features 12 different Angels in body paint . . . and nothing else.
