Library at Rutgers Law School–Newark Awarded Grant for Preservation of Old and Rare Legal Books and Documents

The Law Library at Rutgers School of Law–Newark has received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) that will help preserve old and rare books in its collections for future generations. IMLS will donate to Rutgers a core set of conservation books and online resources designated the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. Among the library’s holdings in need of preservation and care are manuscripts and books in the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph P. Bradley (1870–1892) collection, Garden State Bar Association archives, National Bar Association archives, and some rare books such as those on English law dating back to the 16th century.

AALL Opposes Repeal of Public Access Bill

Lincoln's Legal Papers Now Online

The Dekalb Daily Chronicle reports that -

Internet users around the world now have access to the legal papers of Abraham Lincoln, according to a news release from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

"The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln" was first published in 2000 in a set of three DVDs, the release said. The online edition includes all of the documents and information from the DVDs, plus new information included in a 2008 print edition of the papers.

Tennessee To Shut Public Law Libraries

Due to the expense of maintaining what it considers to be underutilized resoures, the Tennessee Supreme Court will close its law libraries in Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis on January 1st. Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee explained that, since most legal research is online now, "we were not getting our money's worth out of [these law libraries] at all."

India Opens Its First Online Law Library

Those involved in legal issues in India will benefit from the inauguration of the country's first e-law library -

Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat inaugurated the country's first e-law library here aimed at facilitating legal practitioners.
"Justice has to reach the common man and if this concept succeeds in giving justice, only then we can say it is working," Kamat said while inaugurating the library at the Bombay High Court on Saturday, adding that it would serve as a model for other Bar Councils.

...[T]he shrinking space -- and at some large firms, ...the shrinking library staff -- isn't the death knell for the law firm library, but the start of its next, better, technologically advanced phase. Through online hubs like the Milbank Research Portal, lawyers will have fast, fine-tuned access to the resources they need. Librarians will have more control over what sources are used -- and what expenses are incurred. Publishers will no longer have all the leverage when negotiating contracts for licensed materials; and, in the end, clients will get better service that's more cost-efficient, too.

Star-Ledger For Sale???

According to Channel 7 Eyewitness News, Advance Publications Inc. will sell The Star-Ledger of Newark unless 26 percent of staff accept buyouts by October, the company told employees in a letter Thursday.Star-Ledger publisher George Arwady said that if 200 if the paper's 750 full-time employees do not apply for a buyout by Oct.1, and if the company does not get new agreements from unions representing its mailers and drivers, the New Jersey paper will be sold."The situation is critical - we are currently on life support," Arwady said in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.
