I have been informed by John Prendergast's office that I do not have permission to broadcast his talk of April 5. I had asked him beforehand, he said it was ok - but I didn't get it in writing. So the cablecast has been canceled.

Since I have already gotten a scheduled slot from PCM - I asked them to substitute a program from last year. So I'm happy to announce the "What is Genocide" Panel with high school & middle school students will be cablecast on the following dates and channels:

"SCREAMERS" A Movie about Genocide Featuring Music by System Of A Down
Producer/director Carla Garapedian (Zarmina: Lifting the Veil, Children of the Secret State, Iran Undercover) is taking on another heavy topic with her latest documentary Screamers. The movie examines various genocides from the past century, in particular focusing on the Armenian genocide of 1915 at the hands of the Turks. Movies like this are often powerful and disturbing, but difficult to get out to a wide audience.

Screamers features the participation of System of a Down, who not only provide music, but also star in the film as well. It follows the personal story of lead singer Serj Tankian's 96 year old grandfather, who is one of the few Armenian survivors from his village in Turkey. The term "Screamers" refers to political whistleblowers who speak out against governments who try to keep genocides under wraps.

Katie-Jay Scott, the coordinator for the Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness, was evacuated by the French earlier today from her hotel in N'Djamena. She is in Chad with the Stop Genocide Now I-ACT team. Sounds like she is being evacuated to Liberia, then on to France or the U.S.

3. April is Genocide Awareness Month - so far we have John Prendergast speaking on April 5th (Robert Hadley, Sherry and Marty to work on location!), Judiac Studies will show a genocide denial movie and have a panel discussion following, STAND at Lincoln HS will host Darfur events

Wed. 11/7 - All day Camp Darfur for middle and high school students to visit hosted by Lincoln High School STAND in SW. Survivors from Cambodia, Rwanda, the Holocaust, Armenian descendants and Darfur will be available to speak to students and walk through Camp Darfur. We would like a large cross section of schools from Multnomah, Clackamas, Clarke and Washington Counties.

All Day: Peacemakers Conference - 3 workshops on Darfur including one that focuses on China and Darfur. Camp Darfur will be set up. Presenters include Katie-Jay Scott, Sarah Stark and Gabriel Stauring from the Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness and Stop Genocide Now. This conference is open to ANY middle and high school group - information will be available on Resolutions Northwest's website after 9/17

Darfur Now is the newest documentary on the situation and the people who are working to end the genocide. A panel discussion will follow the screening with Mohamed Yahya, an exiled Darfuri, Gabriel Stauring of Stop Genocide Now, James Myik from Southern Sudan and KTJ Scott from the Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness. Through a network of the Interfaith Alliance, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, the Inter-Religious Action Network of Washington County and the Interfaith Council of Greater Portland there will be an hour and half service where people of all faiths are invited to speak and pray together. Mohamed Yahya from Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy will be speaking. After the service, community members will gather outside in the Park Blocks for a candlelight vigil and the passing of the Olympic Torch by survivors living in our community.
The Torch Relay will begin at 5:30pm in the park blocks directly outside the church between SW Columbia and SW Jefferson on SW Park Ave. Please join us.

Other Oregon events: Following Portland's event on Sunday the 11^th, Bend will also be hosting Camp Darfur and have a Torch Relay event onNovember 11th. By linking our events state-wide we can make a bigger impact.

Partnership of event: Partners for this event are first and foremost part of a network of community organizations (schools, religious groups, and non-profits) that seek to end the genocide in Darfur through actively engaging our local networks. We are asking for community groups to partner with us for this event. This includes promotion of the event and involvement either before or during the 4-day event. There is no required monetary contribution, however, any amount of a donation will help cover costs of the 4-day event, including speakers, permits, venues, and the purchase of the film.

The China and Darfur Connection

Dream for Darfur - Portland is a four day event that focuses on awareness and education of the current situation in Darfur. The event will focus on the current situation in Darfur and the relationship between China and Darfur. We will succeed by making the connection between Darfur and past genocides, honoring survivors and helping community members feel connected to the issue.

The National Campaign:

As the world prepares for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, an event that stands for peace and brotherhood, China continues to abet genocide in Darfur.

Why China?

China

's political, economic, and military ties to the genocidal regime in Khartoum give it the unique ability to influence Sudan to end the mass atrocities continuing in Darfur.

For years China ignored this responsibility completely. But now, due to pressure by activists from around the world, they have begun to pay some public heed to their role. We now have an extraordinary opportunity to reach out to the Chinese government and urge them to help bring the Olympic motto "One World, One Dream" to Darfur.

We are pursuing our effort through many avenues. The signature event is a symbolic Olympic Torch Relay from Darfur to Beijing. On the heels of our first torch lighting in eastern Chad on August 8th, one year from the official opening ceremonies in Beijing, the relay will then travel through the United States and countries historically associated with genocide: Rwanda, Armenia, Bosnia, Germany, and Cambodia - linking atrocities in these countries to the current genocide in Darfur.

We will end the domestic Relay in Washington DC on Dec 10^th and the international Relay in Hong Kong on December 13^th.

Greetings Coalition Members!

There are lots of exciting events coming up this Fall! We are tabling and speaking at the Groove Enhancement Project in Pioneer Square on September 29th. We are tabling at the first showing of "Devil Came on Horseback" in Portland at NW Film Center on Oct 4th and we are planning a 4-day Dream for Darfur weekend that brings together middle and high school students, Universities, the religious community and more to bring attention to the relationship between China and the ongoing genocide in Darfur.

Join us for our next meeting 9/13 at 7:00pm at the NW Urban Grind to discuss these events and preparations for Genocide Awareness Month in April 2008!

Note: Successfully completed! Check for replay times on PCM channels! Also, will soon be on the Internet, and a dvd will be available!

About: This is a live cablecast panel responding to the question What is Genocide. There will be a panel of 4 to 5 individuals, including a student or two, and an audience of mostly middle and high school students. Others are invited to attend. A short video animation will introduce the subject. The adult members will expound about one or two questions raised by the video. (The questions will be prearranged before with the input of the speakers as to get the fullest explanation of the many, complex issues involved while making the best use of the expertise and of the speakers.)

Reach: This program will be cablecast live on channel 23. Schools with the capacity to watch cable access tv in the classroom are encouraged to watch, and respond live with questions via phone or email. The purpose is to provide an understanding of the complexity, history and specificity of the term Genocide for a school age audience. The time frame, while short (30-45 minutes), will allow presentation of the material during a single class period.

Support for Genocide Awareness Week 2007

Genocide Awareness Week 2007 is put together by the Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness. The coalition promotes events during the week, and supports some events to varying degrees, according to resources. Many events are independent, coordinated with Genocide Awareness Week by other groups, which do their own fundraising.

Oregon Peace Institute acts as the fiscal sponsor for much of the 2007 events, including a generous grant from the Jubitz Family Foundation. (Good going KTJ!) This is within Oregon Peace Institutes's mission of providing resources to and educating Oregonians in peace and non-violent conflict resolution.

Events and projects that are listed as fundraisers for the Genocide Awareness Week or the Portland Coalition for Genocide Awareness are handled through Oregon Peace Institute, and are used to offset the cost of providing speakers, films, venues and promotion for Genocide Awareness Week. This includes the Opening Celebration, the Building Hope and Celebrating Survivor event and t-shirt sales.

The coalition also hopes to raise seed money for events throughout the rest of 2007 and 2008.
