Adding "U'le'chaparat Pesha" in Musaf on Rosh Hodesh during a leap year

During the Musaf service on rosh hodesh, we recite a special paragraph that begins "Elokenu V'Eloke Avotenu Hadesh Alenu," in which we pray for different blessings for the coming month.

As noted by the Kaf Ha'haim (work by Rabbi Yaakov Sofer, 1870-1939), this paragraph contains twelve different requests for
the new month, such as "goodness," "blessing," "happiness," "joy," "salvation," "consolation," and so on. The Kaf Ha'haim explains that these twelve requests correspond to the twelve months of the year. For this reason, he adds, during a leap year, when we add a thirteenth month to calendar, we correspondingly insert a thirteenth request into this section of the Musaf service - "U'le'chaparat Pesha" - beseeching the Almighty to grant us atonement during the coming month.

There are three different customs as to when we add "U'le'chaparat Pesha":

a)only on Adar II,

b) the entire leap year, and

c) Tishrei-Adar II.

The latter seems to be the most common custom in Ashkenazi synagogues.

Summer Learning - August 12-21

We are pleased that a week of learning returns to Young Israel in conjunction with Yeshiva Beis Binyamin right after Tisha B'Av. Study groups will be available before and after daily miyanim starting that Tuesday 8/12, and a special Shabbos Nachamu program is in planning. We will also have late afternoon learning & fun for the kids.

ABOUT URI L'TZEDEK
The mission of Uri L'Tzedek is to serve and inspire the American Orthodox Jewish community towards enacting social justice in our communities. To do so, it aims to develop the new, growing discourse among traditional Jewish communities -- making the connection between God, Torah, and social issues in America, and to help translate that discourse into action. Through these efforts, the organization hopes to develop a Jewish community of learners and leaders seeking to improve the world and our religious and ethical lives through the cultivation of positive character traits, leadership skills, and a realization of our moral responsibility.

Rabbi Taubes
Rabbi Taubes has been involved in chinuch, both formally and informally, as a rebbe, teacher, and administrator for over twenty five years. He is the former principal at MTA. He is the author of The Practical Torah, a collection of presentations on halacha based on the weekly parsha, and various scholarly essays in Hebrew and English that have been published in Torah journals. Most recently, Rabbi Taubes co-edited a Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur Machzor, with notes and commentary based on the teachings of Harav Yosef Dov Halevi Soloveitchik, zt"l .

In addition to teaching Gemara at TABC High School in Teaneck, NJ, he teaches at Yeshiva University's Mechinah Program and is involved in writing and editing for Art Scroll/Mesorah Publications. Rabbi Taubes is a musmach of RIETS, having studied for several years under HaRav Soloveitchik, and holds a master's degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University's Ferkauf Graduate School. He is presently the Rav of Kehillas Zichron Mordechai in Teaneck.
