Vampire Weekend Streams, MP3s, Videos and Sessions

Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut album, appearance on Saturday Night Live and performances at South by Southwest, an extensive touring schedule, not to mention praise and love from the media, bloggers and indie music fans (although the predictable backlash has begun), have propelled the preppy New York City band to near instant international recognition.

Spoon Releases Music Video for "You Got Ya Cherry Bomb" Hit Single

At first, it was hard to believe that for nearly a year there was no official music video for Spoon's smoking hot hit single "You Got Ya Cherry Bomb" [mp3] until this month.

Nonetheless, some fact-checking confirmed that there was no official music video what was clearly one of the top indie rock hits of 2007, even grabbing a number of awards for best song of the year.

Of course there are the usual YouTube videos of the song featuring live performances and people creating their own videos to the song, but this is the first time the official version has been released(finally).

The 'Other' HP "Picture Book" TV Spot by The Kinks

Almost everyone who watched television in 2006 and 2007 remembers the 2006 award-winning HP commercial that used classic, but long forgotten (as most great Kinks' songs were until they started showing up in movies, cable TV shows and commercials during the past decade) song from The Kinks, "Picture Book" (lyrics and MP3 below).

Yet an alternative version of the commercial has surfaced on YouTube that was either never shown, only aired in certain markets or was pulled for the version (see that here) most people are familiar with. My guess is that it is the version played in the U.K.

This spot is interesting, especially for folks who liked the HP campaign and/or are fans of The Kinks - the greatest rock/pop band ever!

Now we know - and which I think was part of the message of the HP campaign - that there are other 'video magicians' out there who can duplicate HP's famous 'freeze-frame' concept that helped make the campaign so popular and memorable.

Online Video Production: MuveeMix - Product Doesn't Match Hype

There are dozens of websites on the Internet nowadays that let you not only upload your videos, but make it as easy as butter to add eye-candy effects, song tracks, video titles and so on.

However, as with all experimentation, things don't always go as planned.

In this video, I took video tape I recorded from an Arctic Monkeys concert in San Francisco and spliced it together using MuveeMix. For the song, I used "Flourescent Adolescent", but realized after "Brainstorm" was the more appropriate choice.

Next, I added the 'old fashion' theme to the video to give it a gritty look. The results of this experiment were mixed.

Half way through the video, the song track added skips and keeps on skipping. So, for all intent and purposes, enjoy the first half of this video and ignore the rest until I can figure out what went wrong.

But worst of all is that once I embedded the video I created into this page, the video itself would simply never load on the page, causing the web browser to crash. Meanwhile, the YouTube videos load up and play without a hitch.

Therefore, based on this experience, I would not recommend MuveeMix, but I'd love to hear some other opinions of folks who have used it successfully and how they overcame these issues, most especially the bandwidth issue. If the video doesn't load on the webpage, then what's the point?

Therefore, in the meantime you can see my ill-fated attempt to create a cool video using MuveeMix. It looked promising, but didn't deliver. One way is to look at it is something like this:

Dang that Chinese food smelt and looked great, but I was up all night with stomach cramps and vomiting.

That's a summation - alas - of my experience with MuveeMix. Let me know when you get it really working to meet the demands of 2008 expectations.

Vicious Vicious' Strange Band Name vs. Persona Overshadows Good Music

Minneapolis indie pop rock band Vicious Vicious do not live up to their name - a music fan would expect them to be a punk or hard rock or some other extreme rock subgenre band.

So it is a bit annoying that a group with such marvelously crafted pop, rock and funkadelic sounds would chose a name that does not reflect their music or stage presence. Part of me wants to call it pretentious, but it's just plain puzzling, and I haven't been able to find an interview were the band members are challenged on the name.

In today's Internet-dominated music world, a band needs to be extra savvy about what it takes to be credible and how to optimize name-branding on the Internet with the goal of attracting fans to their official websites, MySpace pages, Facebook profiles and so on. Picking the right name for a band nowadays requires careful thinking and a good level of online marketing and promotion.

Notwithstanding, to be more 'indie' about this matter, let's say we just forget that they are going to have problems promoting themselves based on their name.

At the end of the day it's just plain disingenuous to choose such a name as Vicious Vicious for a band who's online promotional photos show them holding yellow balloons and whose music is more candy than cane. Sorry metal heads - and even rock fans - Vicious Vicious are not vicious by any stretch of the imagination.

The proof is in the pudding (but I still must say there music is awesome). The best way to get to know the band's music is to go to their official site where their music plays at a non-stop stream (unless you kill it of course).

Editor's note: Personally, I found myself listening to the stream at least twice over during an hour and a half period - and this is coming from someone who still has loads of great music to review, not to mention all of the submissions by postal mail (artists and labels: please do not send me emails with audio attachments; they will be stripped by my email program, please send music you'd like me to review to Box #722, RE, CA 95044.

Since the release of their latest album Parade in September 2007, songs like "Rain Parade", "Ho Baby" and other well-produced indie pop songs have increased the band's popularity.

According to Vicious Vicious' official website, Applewick and the others are working on new material for yet another album to possibly be released in 2008. Let's hope so, because these guys are on a serious roll.

Rare and Intimate Video of Arcade Fire Playing in a Lift

They are one of the few indie rock bands in the history of the genre that can say they made the cover of The Rolling Stone and Time magazine, the latter being an honor usually bestowed on world leaders, Nobel prize winners and at the most aging rockers, but not for a quirky, barely known (at that time at least) band from Canada.

Arcade Fire - No Car Go - Arcade Fire [mp3]

Fans of Arcade Fire are partly attracted to the band's blend of orchestra pop raised up by soaring chorus. But even more AF fans love the band for their uncanny ability to entertain wherever, whenever and with whatever they can find.

If you are not an AF fan, maybe you will be after you see and hear them play the title track from their 2007 hit album, Neon Bible in a Parisian elevator.

Silversun Pickups' Remix CD So-So

One of the big 'new' groups of 2007 on the indie circuit was definitely Silversun Pickups.

The band's impressive debut EP Pikul in 2006 was followed by the brilliant release of Carnavas, which was still on The Billboard 200 chart as of last summer and peeked at No. 5 on the Top Independent Albums in 2006.

Carnavas was the band's first full-length release under the direction of the respected rock producer Dave Cooley (who has worked with Smash Mouth and Citizen King).

The album included a number of indie blog favorites, especially the exhilarating single "Lazy Eye."

So One AM Radio records put out a remix CD last month that includes four remixes of "Lazy Eye" and two remixes of "Little Lovers So Polite".

For SSPU fans, the remixes are a worthy listen to, but don't get to excited. Others who are annoyed by SSPU for their own various reasons, may point to this remix release as more evidence for their dismissal of one of L.A.'s most talked about rock bands in the past year.

Xmas Songs: The Kinks, Belle & Sebastian, The Fray, Sufjan Stevens and Dozens More

The MP3 series of indie, alternative, rock and pop Christmas songs on IRC has been receiving unprecedented traffic from web searchers and others who want different, yet good, Christmas and holiday music.

The IRC series is available via a feed for people who prefer to receive subsequent playlists via email or their feed reader.

Yesterday, Mix Four of "The 12 Plays of Alternative Christmas" was published featuring a total of 18 Xmas tunes.

The playlist mix - in MP3 format - includes some classic alt Xmas songs from rock icons The Kinks, Dandy Warhols and Sufjan Stevens, as well as amazing and notable performances from alt and indie staples like The Fray, The Knife, Matchbook Romance, The Format and The Matches.

Even given all of that, and more so than any of the previous playlists, Mix Four consists of some impressive tunes from previously unknown artists (at least on this end) such as Andrew Dost, Ex-Otago, Shakin Stevens,and Celestial.

There are also out-takes from a classic December 18, 2002 Peel Session by the Swedish indie outfit Belle and Sebastian.

Sleeping Lessons (RAC Mix) - The Shins

The RAC mix of The Shins "Sleeping Lessons" track is much like the original - dreamy, melodic and engaging, starting off slowly with lo-fi vocals and guitar and harp strings coupled with ambient keyboard interludes and a bad bass line.

More than half way through the song, the enthusiastic climax - a driving, infectious chorus - reaches exhilarating heights.

By the time it all winds down, listeners may find themselves wanting that forward-marching chorus and up tempo beat to keep going, much the way Arcade Fire's "Neighborhoods" song trio does.

In fact, "Sleeping Lessons" has the unmistakable feel of Arcade Fire's now-famous style of sweeping, indie chamber pop-rock music. To be featured on the cover of Time magazine must say something, but if Arcade Fire made Time, The Shins should definitely get their cover (or should they? eems to be quite the rage these days.

Rather, "Sleeping Lessons" ends much like it started - unpretentious and soothing, even slightly psychedelic, sprinkled with metered harp and guitar strumming that slowly fade behind the megaphone-style lo-fi vocals.

Nevertheless, the failure to capitalize on the driving and infectious chorus that makes the song so memorable was a miscalculation on the part of The Shins. The boys of the band could have really taken the mix to its logical next level - extending the beat, if you will, but they didn't. I so wanted them to embrace the chorus and run with it for a few minutes, rather than little over one minute.

This "failure to communicate" to the masses leaves the door wide open for some electronica deejay or need-a-hit band to do a butcher-job style cover version of "Sleeping Lessons" some day should The Shins ever fall from grace (no signs of that yet and eagerly awaiting the next album).

When you consider The Shins' enormous global popularity in rock music now, it is not a stretch to imagine this song ending up in a Volkswagen, Toyota or GM commercial. Ugh, right?

It's amazing what you can do with one finger - like point out who's to blame for that.

Vinyl lovers alert: This RAC mix is recorded from vinyl; if it's not, prove me wrong because I hear the signature snap, crackle and pop of vinyl in the beginning of this mix, but not on the official music video version.

Editors' Two New Hit Singles and Videos from An End Has a Start Release

With the release of their sophomore CD An End Has A Start this summer, containing popular songs like "Smoking Outside the Hospital Doors", band members of Editors having been touring relentlessly as their popularity grows with the release of each new single.

The latest release from the band that is getting good play on the web is the music video to the title track of An End Has A Start.

Here's the band's most recent music video release, "Racing With Rats" - direct from the band's own YouTube page:

During the summer the music video to "Smoking Outside the Hospital Doors" has been viewed nearly a half million times just on the band's YouTube page itself.

As sadly ironic as the title is, the song has an element of longing to it, not what you'd expect from a song with the precursor "the saddest thing I've ever seen." No disrespect Tom. It's a great song, but the lyrics are a bit lame. I can show you some things that are far, far sadder. But I get the irony, man.

Still, let's face it, Editors have a great, signature sound, but the lyrics lack the maturity and craftsmanship of many other, lesser known indie song writers. However, it is only fair to say that the lads are fairly new to the scene (circa 2004) and not known for their lyrics as much as they are for their captivating sound.

Nevertheless, the music video for "Smoking Outside the Hospital Doors" is nothing special, but worth a watch for fans. Personally, I like the band's earlier videos, especially for "Munich" and "Bullets", two of the songs that really shot the band onto the more mainstream, if you will, indie rock scene.

Stereophonics New Album Pull The Pin No. 1 in UK; MP3s, Music Videos and Tour Schedule

With the release of their new full-length album Pull The Pin on Monday (not a Bank Holiday, by the way), and the buzz created around it with a duo of hot singles released this summer on the Monday Bank Holiday EP, V2 Records' flagship rockers Stereophonics are selling tickets fast for their upcoming 21-show European concert tour.

Pull The Pin has already reached the top of the album charts in the U.K. and appears to be holding strong.

The album's rapid ascent to the top of the album charts in the U.K. is no surprise considering Stereophonics' name recognition overseas.

The Song Almost Everyone Has Heard, But Few Know Who Sing It

Studying this site's traffic statistics reveals that many of you are looking for information about songs on television commercials.

Most notably in the past six months or so have been questions about the song playing on a widely-viewed AT&T commercial for Cingular. The commercial briefly shows two performers on a stage with colored lights and enthusiastic fans crowded around the stage as the music duo pump out a feel-good, danceable pop tune.

Well after some time researching, the song is by one of the most popular indie pop couples - Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner - around today, and it's called interestingly enough "For The Actor".

It seems everyone nowadays wants a piece of the wildly popular "indie music scene," from music producers to concert promoters.

We can debate about what is and isn't indie, but the fact of the matter is that many rock and pop artists from independent and smaller record labels are increasingly gaining audience share as the youth music market turns away from entertainers like Britney Spears and gangsta rap.

Wait a minute! This indie is for us - the ones who really understand and love indie and alternative music for what it is - not what it becomes when the millions of screaming girls start lining up at arenas to see a group like Muse or Blue October. Ugh.

Editors Release Second CD "An End Has A Start"; Set Out On Tour

The popular indie goth-rock band Editors have followed up their platinum 2005 debut with their sophomore CD titled An End Has A Start, which rocketed to the top of the U.K. album charts just days after its release.

For fans who are unaware of the band - and those of who you just can't get enough - you can listen and download songs from the album on Editors' official website and on the band's MySpace page.

There is also a free MP3 download of the album available in the links section of this website.

Music critics and fans are giving the new LP a thumbs up, although not as enthusiastically as the group's highly acclaimed 2005 debut album The Back Room.

Here's what singer and songwriter Tom Smith told AOL Sessions about the new album after a recording this summer: "There is a lot of death on the record, that sounds pretty morbid but it's the truth. Death has touched me and my friends in the last year in several ways. Realizing everything comes to an end is important and I think we've done our best to make it something glorious and uplifting as well as scary."

Editors have been on a roll since the 2005 release of their first single "Bullets" was followed up by their break-through single "Munich" that "made them darlings of the U.K. music press," according to AllMusic.

The four lads caught the attention of just about everyone that year, but it was the band's performance at the 2005 annual Glastonbury Music Festival that rocketed the band to fame in the U.K. and Europe. Shortly after the festival, and in a whirl of rock media frenzy, the band released it's third single "Blood".

Without much delay, Editors were back in the Kitchenware Records studios working on their much anticipated debut CD The Back Room, which was subsequently released in the summer of 2005.

As is the case with many artists that become popular relatively fast, pressure mounted on the band and the record label to pump out more music. Thankfully, pure demand economics, and some smart decision-making on the part of Kitchenware, the single "Munich" was reissued in January 2006.

Soon after, The Back Room made it into the Top Five on the U.K. charts, followed by a gold record and a number of music awards.

The Editors are in the midst of an extensive U.S. tour next month with openers Stellastarr, and later on with Ra Ra Riot, a band "to watch" out of Syracuse, New York.

With their catchy, somewhat frantic musical flair that the six or so members deliver with seemingly boundless energy and near chaotic stage antics - thus, the name - Ra Ra Riot may be one homegrown answer to Canada's wildly popular, sweepingly energizing band Arcade Fire, who even made it on the cover Time magazine.
