We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name---Liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible means---liberty and tyranny.

Lincolns words echo from the past to fit neatly in the current atmosphere of America today,and while those words were meant to address the slavery and the oppression of the blacks, the words are equally apropos for our current struggles in America. Slavery is not just the oppression of the Jews, or the blacks, or any of the other historic groups of people who have been forced to labor for a higher class, it can also be an oppression of an entire country for the benefit of the Political Elite. As it stands, Americans are nothing more than the slaves of Washington and more people are realizing it.

Polls indicate that President Obama's approval ratings are dropping. In Ohio they have dropped by 13 points to rest at a 49 percent approval rating and a 44 percent disapproval rating. According to a Gallup Poll the national approval rating had dropped and is clearly divided on party lines.

U.S. President Barack Obama averaged a 58% job approval rating for the first eight days of July, down from an average of 61% for June. His approval rating is down most significantly among independents, to 53% so far in July from an average of 59% in June; it has dropped two points among Republicans (from 25% in June to 23% so far in July) and has gone up a point among Democrats, to 90%.

At this point in the game this may be just the status quo as every President has a rocky start, and a loud loyal opposition. Still the polling numbers do not bode well if the trend continues ,and it will as long as Americans are feeling the strain of the economy and see no end in sight due to legislation that would demand all Americans pay higher taxes.

Michael Moore Is An Idiot- It IS That Simple

John Stossel, Co-anchor for ABC's 20/20 informs us that Michael Moore's new movie will take on capitalism, judging it to be bad.

Producing, selling what you produce and earning money by hard work and creativity is evil in Moore's mind.

“The wealthy, at some point, decided they didn’t have enough wealth. They wanted more — a lot more. So they systematically set about to fleece the American people out of their hard-earned money. Now, why would they do this? That is what I seek to discover in this movie.”

Stossel's take:

How ridiculous is that? The wealthy, and everyone else, almost always decide that they don’t have enough wealth. People ask their bosses for raises. We invest in stocks hoping for bigger returns than Treasury Bonds bring. “Greed” is a constant. The beauty of free markets, when government doesn’t meddle in them, is that they turn this greed into a phenomenal force for good. The way to win big money is to serve your customers well. Profit-seeking entrepreneurs have given us better products, shorter work days, extended lives, and more opportunities to write the script of our own life.

On Thursday, Moore announced the title of the movie: Capitalism: A Love Story.

It’s a title I might have picked to make a point opposite of what I assume Moore has in mind.

Moore also fails to understand is that it was not “capitalism” run amok that caused today’s financial problems. In reality, it was a combination of ill-conceived government policies and an overzealous Federal Reserve artificially lowering interest rates to fuel a bubble in the housing market. Then it was government that took money from taxpayers and forced banks to accept it.

The only person "fleecing" the American public is Michael Moore with his ridiculous notions and socialistic desires. Why doesn't he just move to China and see how much of his own money he gets to keep so greedily?

This is just dumb. As John Stossel begins to point out, it’s not the private sector that is “fleec[ing] the American people out of their hard-earned money,” it’s the government. Who robs Americans of half of their hard-earned income at gun point every single year? Who counterfeits endlessly to the point of causing massive and widespread malinvestment, job losses, inflation, and depressions? It’s certainly not the private sector. And it certainly has nothing to do with Capitalism.

Just think, who would Obama raise all those taxes on, to pay for his massive spending idiocy if the rich weren't greedy?

Obama and the Democrats seem to think the "rich" and their bank accounts are creating wealth just so Obama and company can reach in and steal from them to cover anything they wish to waste money on.

People like Moore continue to try to demonize the wealthy, but what would we all do without those very same people that dare to create, produce and thrive on capitalism?

Starve.

After The Smoke Has Gone

Oh my God! That's what they all say. Oh my God! Oh my God! After a lifetime of denial or indifference suddenly one finds faith. Oh my God! Confronted with the enormity of evil and the certainty of death, when no one else will answer, when no one else will do, we make our final desperate plea to our mysterious disregarded father. We are experiencing an epiphany, a sudden suspension of disbelief. And we all say the same thing, don't we? Sooner or later we all say the same thing.

Last night I watched them fall again. I watched the buildings fall. Why now, why, when confronted with the certainty of my own demise am I drawn once again to pay homage to this ghastly funeral pyre? Why resurrect the pain? The awful deed has been done. The smoke has cleared. Why do I feel this almost sacred need to relive it? Perhaps it is because of that dramatic and unequivocal title, which I suspect is somehow false and inappropriate: "102 Minutes That Changed America". Perhaps it is because I fear that America has not really changed. Not really. Not enough. The awful deed has been done. The smoke has cleared. And we have moved on. Life must go on, we tell ourselves. Once again we have withdrawn into the convenient comfort of our intellectual hubris. We have assigned the great event to history, where it sits unobtrusively on the shelf with all of those other omnipotent but disregarded historical events. And we have moved on.

But have our enemies moved on? Have our enemies forgotten us? Abandoned their murderous mission? Or are they patiently waiting for us to forget them? Counting on our notoriously short attention span? Do they know us better than we know them? Than we know ourselves? Has our anger and our fear dissipated with the smoke?

Here, once again, for those who doubt our mortal peril, we revisit the awful event. Can we still cry? Can we still call out, Oh my God!? - rg

The House Bucks Obama

You won't see this happening often in the US Congress where they are determined to rubber stamp almost everything their King Obama wants of them, so when it does happen it is worth noting.

The Hill:

The House rebuked President Obama for trying to ignore restrictions to international aid payments, voting overwhelmingly for an amendment forcing the administration to abide by its constraints.

House members approved an amendment by a 429-2 vote to have the Obama administration pressure the World Bank to strengthen labor and environmental standards and require a Treasury Department report on World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) activities. The amendment to a 2010 funding bill for the State Department and foreign operations was proposed by Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), but it received broad bipartisan support.

The conditions on World Bank and IMF funding were part of the $106 billion war supplemental bill that was passed last month. Obama, in a statement made as he signed the bill, said that he would ignore the conditions.

They would "interfere with my constitutional authority to conduct foreign relations by directing the Executive to take certain positions in negotiations or discussions with international organizations and foreign governments, or by requiring consultation with the Congress prior to such negotiations or discussions," Obama said in the signing statement.

Senior Democrats and Republicans railed against the notion that the president could ignore a law they had passed and he had signed.

Burr Oaks Cemetary- Digging Up Bodies To Resell Plots

Gruesome.

And so four workers at historic Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip plundered them, smashing open the concrete liners and hauling away the human remains inside to a weedy dump site, Cook County investigators say.

If bones clattered off the dump truck along the way, they were left on the side of the cemetery roads, investigators say.

As many as 300 bodies were unearthed and dumped in a mass grave as part of a scam that netted the workers about $300,000, authorities said Thursday.

The empty graves were resold to unsuspecting families for cash -- off the books, authorities said.

Identifying the bodies is going to prove to be a daunting task as well, according to anthropologist Clyde Snow:

Even to a scientist known worldwide for his expertise in skeletal remains and mass grave sites, there was something unusually cruel about the unearthing of perhaps hundreds of people at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip.

On June 30, the Cook County medical examiner's office called on Clyde Snow, 81, a noted forensic anthropologist from Oklahoma, to examine a small collection of human bone fragments that authorities had recovered from Burr Oak.

Snow -- who has worked on some of the most famous forensic cases in the world, including John Wayne Gacy, King Tutankhamen and others -- discovered that the pieces of skull, arm, leg and vertebrae belonged to several people who likely had been buried within the last 50 years.

Snow determined that the brittle bones had cracked during the excavation process, but that their outer shells did not show the typical wear and tear or embedded bits of soil commonly seen in bones buried for more than five decades.

"Everything was consistent with what you would see when you disturb coffin burials," Snow said from his home in Norman, Okla. "I had no idea then how enormous and complex a case this was."

Four people have been arrested in the Burr Oaks case and may they rot in hell for what they have done.

Moderate Democrats Giving Leadership A Headache On Obamacare

Democrats which hold control of the House and the Senate are having a hard time keeping their more moderate members "in line."

It seems the moderates, often called the Blue Dog Democrats are insisting that a bill passed should be something that is workable, not just passing something to say they passed something.

First, Democrats are at "odds" on how to pay for the trillion dollar scheme, via NYT:

House and Senate Democrats appeared on Thursday to be on a collision course over how to pay for a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s health care system, with the House planning to propose an income tax increase on the wealthiest Americans, an idea that Senate negotiators have all but dismissed as unworkable.

The first idea for Democrats, always, is raise taxes on the rich!!

The second, start taxing other things:

Instead, the House Ways and Means Committee was said to be nearing agreement on an income tax surcharge of 2 percent or more on Americans with the highest incomes — those earning more than $250,000. The surtax would rise for those earning $500,000 and rise again for those earning more than $1 million.

At the same time, aides said that the House was moving away from other ideas, including a proposed sales tax on sodas and other sugary drinks and a new payroll tax of 0.3 percent to be paid by employees and employers.

They have a variety of other ideas, all of which will eventually come out of everyone's pocket, not just the rich.... so much for not raising taxes on the middle and low class.

Tell me, is it only the rich that drink soda? Is it only the rich that sees a nice chunk of money come out of their paychecks for taxes?

Nope, these are taxes that everyone who works will end up paying, yet Obama is not specifically taxing the middle and lower classes, is he?

What a joke.

Next we see the Democrats in the House and Senate cannot manage to agree on the bill they already passed and the moderates have some serious reservations about the scheme already written up.

On Wednesday and Thursday, House Democrats of every stripe filled the speaker's mailbox with a torrent of missives to make their case for what they do and don't want in the legislation – all while tax-writers struggled to agree on ways to pay for it.

–Forty members of the conservative Blue Dog Coalition – representing just enough votes to kill a party-line vote – articulated their "strong reservations about the process and direction" of an early preview of the bill offered by chairmen of the Energy and Commerce, Education and Labor and Ways and Means committees.

—A pair of junior members of the House garnered 60-plus signatures on a letter siding
with prescription-drug makers and President Obama and against the call of Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) to reinstate some price controls.

—A group of 22 wayward New Democrats expressed their hope that government-sponsored health coverage would piggyback on Medicare's pre-existing network, despite earlier opposition to the idea from caucus leaders.

—And finally, a mix of 20 rural and Western Democrats made their case for why the bill should fix inequities in the reimbursement rates Medicare pays to health care providers in "low-cost, high-quality" states.

This wave of public posturing presented party leaders with another round of hurdles as they push to meet a self-imposed August deadline for the House to pass a health reform bill. The Blue Dogs, many of whom are not expected to support any health-care overhaul, as usual put up the highest hurdle for their party's leaders to clear.

"After reviewing the draft tri-committee health care reform proposal, we believe it lacks a number of elements essential to preserving what works and fixing what is broken," the groups signatories said in their letter, sent before a two-hour meeting with party leaders in the ceremonial floor office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday night.

The Blue Dogs' letter was emphatic in its opposition to a mandate in the draft that requires employers to pay a fee to the government if they fail to provide their employees with health care coverage – an early flashpoint in both chambers.

"Small business owners and their employees lack coverage because of high and unstable costs – not because of an unwillingness to provide or purchase it," the lawmakers wrote. "We cannot support a bill that further exacerbates the challenges faced by small businesses."

What Are We, China?

Seems the Obama administration, along with Congress and the Senate would prefer our country to be more like China.

Atlas Shrugs has the full details, but it seems that free speech could now be considered a felony if you offend someone else.

Heh, I bet for once the left and the right blogosphere will be in agreement that this is a very very bad bill.

I do gather severe emotional distress would have to be proven in order to be convicted of the felony, but just the fact that someone could waste the courts time, cost a person money by hiring lawyers to defend their right of free speech is a path we truly shouldn't be traveling.

Then, we have this, just as worrying:

Amendments to the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act, which has already been passed by the House, would empower the Attorney General Eric Holder to define gun owners, anti-abortion activists and tax protesters as domestic terrorists in light of recent federal reports that classify millions of Americans as “extremists”.

Former impeached Florida judge and now Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings has introduced amendments to H.R. 2647: National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010, which would give Holder dictator powers to demonize legitimate protest groups as being affiliated with violent race hate organizations.

The bill is ostensibly aimed at preventing race “extremists” and gang members from joining the Army, but since the Army already hires felons, criminals, racists and gang members, the real purpose behind the legislation is to codify the move to label gun owners, “anti-government” activists and tax protesters as domestic terrorists, a process that has been ongoing since at least the start of the decade.

The bill’s definition of “people associated or affiliated with hate groups” include, “Groups or organizations that espouse an intention or expectation of armed revolutionary activity against the United States Government,” or “Other groups or organizations that are determined by the Attorney General to be of a violent, extremist nature.”

The evidence required to show that such an organization is affiliated with a violent hate group includes people possessing tattoos identifying them with the group, individuals who attend conferences or rallies sponsored by a “hate group,” people who engage in online discussion forums of an “extremist” nature, people who possess documents, books or photographs or simply “related materials as defined by the Attorney General” that represent “hate propaganda.”

The amendments introduced by Hastings were passed by the House and the bill now moves on to the Senate for approval before it is signed by the President.

More Stimulus Money Doled Out To Obama Supporters?

USA Today offers a report which is alarming on the surface, showing that counties that supported Barack Obama or as the White House spells it, Barak Obama, have received substantially more "stimulus" monies, per person, than counties that supported John McCain.

Counties that supported Obama last year have reaped twice as much money per person from the administration's $787 billion economic stimulus package as those that voted for his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, a USA TODAY analysis of government disclosure and accounting records shows. That money includes aid to repair military bases, improve public housing and help students pay for college.

The reports show the 872 counties that supported Obama received about $69 per person, on average. The 2,234 that supported McCain received about $34.

Now, the White House denies that politics has anything to do with how the monies are doled out and Adam Hughes, the director of federal fiscal policy for the non-profit OMB Watch, says that it is almost "inconceivable" that the Obama administration could possibly be tinkering with how the funds are divided up.

Jake Wiens, an investigator with the non-profit Project on Government Oversight states that it is too soon to draw any conclusions but that "it will be important to pay close attention as the data come in to ensure that political favoritism plays no role."

Fair enough and I happen to agree. Until all the stimulus monies are spent, no one can really judge.

So, this brings us to how the so called stimulus money is being spent and if it is being used as intended and we find out it is not.

Another article from USA Today:

Under pressure to spend stimulus money quickly, many states are using the federal funds for short-term projects and to fill budget gaps rather than spending on long-term improvements, according to a report by congressional investigators.

The report, scheduled to be released Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) at a House oversight hearing, also says many states aren't meeting some goals and requirements of the economic recovery program. Some states, for example, are not sending transportation funding to the most economically distressed areas, and they are using education funds to prevent layoffs rather than fund innovative new programs, the report says.

As required by the $787 billion stimulus law, the GAO is monitoring stimulus spending in 16 states and the District of Columbia that will receive two-thirds of the federal funds. It reports to Congress every two months.

The report says that as of mid-June, states had received about $29 billion of the estimated $49 billion in stimulus funding they are scheduled to get before the federal budget year ends Sept. 30. More than 90% of the money given to the states so far is for Medicaid and a fund meant to prop up states' budgets for schools and other basic services such as public safety.

In the meantime, the NYT reports that more doubts are arising about Obama's whole spending more to save more plan as unemployment continues to rise as well.

With unemployment already at 9.5 percent and likely to exceed 10 percent, much higher than White House officials predicted back in February, Mr. Obama has been facing attacks that his $787 billion stimulus program was either too timid or wrong-headed or both. Now, just five months after Congress agreed on the plan, with only a fraction of the money actually out the door, Washington is debating the need for a second round of stimulus amid economic and political crosscurrents.

In Ohio, where unemployment is above 10 percent and where Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will visit on Thursday, Mr. Obama’s popularity has dropped sharply. In a poll by Quinnipiac University earlier this week, 48 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Mr. Obama’s handling of the economy, while 46 percent approved, down 11 percentage points since May.

For the final thought, showing Obama will get the last laugh, while unemployment is rising, while the funds from the stimulus sham are not being use as intended and while politicians are considering yet another round of stimulus arguments to throw good money after bad, the White House, led by Barack Obama is going to spend $18 million dollars, just a drop in the bucket compared to the billions he is pricing tax payers with for everything else on his agenda, to redesign the Recovery.gov Web site.

The contract calls for spending $9.5 million through January, and as much as $18 million through 2014, according to the GSA press release.

“We are pleased that another major milestone has been achieved," Earl E. Devaney, chairman of the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, says in the press release. “We thank the GSA for its assistance and look forward to working with Smartronix."

I wonder how many people reading this could use just a tiny, little fraction of that $18 million to pay all their debts off.

Instead, they are paying for the website to be redesigned.

Sarah Palin News Frenzy Still Going

Since announcing her resignation as Governor of Alaska, the media and blogs have gone into a feeding frenzy, with rampant fabrications and specualtion, leading the the FBI being forced to make a public statement denying any investigations were int he works.

I see today, via Memeorandum, that frenzy has not died down much at all.

The first piece I will point you to is one in the Wall Street Journal by John Fund, explaining the reasoning behind Palin's resignation, which we find out has been in the works for months now.

Contrary to most reports, her decision had been in the works for months, accelerating recently as it became clear that controversies and endless ethics investigations were threatening to overshadow her legislative agenda. "Attacks inside Alaska and largely invisible to the national media had paralyzed her administration," someone close to the governor told me. "She was fully aware she would be branded a 'quitter.' She did not want to disappoint her constituents, but she was no longer able to do the job she had been elected to do. Essentially, the taxpayers were paying for Sarah to go to work every day and defend herself."

This situation developed because Alaska's transparency laws allow anyone to file Freedom of Information Act requests. While normally useful, in the hands of political opponents FOIA requests can become a means to bog down a target in a bureaucratic quagmire, thanks to the need to comb through records and respond by a strict timetable. Similarly, ethics investigations are easily triggered and can drag on for months even if the initial complaint is flimsy. Since Ms. Palin returned to Alaska after the 2008 campaign, some 150 FOIA requests have been filed and her office has been targeted for investigation by everyone from the FBI to the Alaska legislature. Most have centered on Ms. Palin's use of government resources, and to date have turned up little save for a few state trips that she agreed to reimburse the state for because her children had accompanied her. In the process, though, she accumulated $500,000 in legal fees in just the last nine months, and knew the bill would grow ever larger in the future.

Among the GOP base, her support remains strong although, big surprise here, Democrats don't like her...lol

National Review has a must read piece called "I still hate you, Sarah Palin."

Did Sarah stand for “family values”? Flay her unwed-mother daughter. Did she represent probity in a notoriously corrupt, one-family state? Spread rumors about FBI investigations. Did she speak with an upper-Midwest twang? Mock it relentlessly on Saturday Night Live. Above all, don’t let her motivate the half of the country that doesn’t want His Serene Highness to bankrupt the nation, align with banana-republic Communist dictators, unilaterally dismantle our missile defenses, and set foot in more mosques than churches since he has become president. We’ve got a suicide cult to run here.

And that’s why Sarah had to go. Whether she understood it or not, she threatened us right down to our most fundamental, meretricious, elitist, sneering, snobbish, insecure, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders bones. She was, after all, a “normal” American, the kind of person (or so I’m told) you meet in flyover country. The kind that worries first about home and hearth and believes in things like motherhood and love of country the way it is, not the way she wants to remake it.

McCain Gets It Right On Honduras

Once again, John McCain shows his experience makes him capable of understanding the difference between a "coup" and a legitimate ousting, as he acknowledges publicly that Honduras former president Manuel Zelaya violated his country's constitution, forcing the country's lawmakers and courts to order the military to oust him from his position.

Members of Congress are also showing support for the so-called coup, via UN dispatch:

Support for the coup in Honduras extends beyond the pages of right wing political magazines to the United States Congress. Tomorrow, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ranking Member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will host a private meeting for her Republican colleagues with former Honduran President Ricardo Maduro and former Costa Rican Ambassador to the U.S. Jaime Daremblum. According to the invitation, obtained by UN Dispatch, "President Maduro will help to outline the sequence of events leading to the shift in power in Honduras and removal of Manuel Zelaya; provide insight into Honduran constitutional authorities; and discuss how the U.S. can now work to support the democratic institutions and rule of law in Honduras." Ambassador Daremblum will discuss his Weekly Standard piece titled "A Coup for Democracy."

In related news, Florida Republican Connie Mack (pictured) is circulating a congressional resolution that effectively supports the coup. So far, the Congressional Coup Caucus includes Dan Burton (Republican from Indiana), Jeff Fortenberry (Republican from Nebraska) and Dana Rohrabacher (Republican from California) who are co-sponsoring the resolution.

While Barack Obama makes statements in support of Zelaya, his words, actions and foreign policy is starting to draw more criticism, via The Hill:

But that support for Zelaya, who was arrested and forced into exile on Sunday after pressing ahead with a constitutional referendum that would have allowed for his reelection, is gradually drawing more criticism of the White House.

"Manuel Zelaya trampled the Honduran Constitution by pushing for his illegal referendum to allow him to rule indefinitely, and by firing the top military official, General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, when he refused to comply with Zelaya's unconstitutional orders," Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.) said in a statement to The Hill on Tuesday.

"There is little doubt that Zelaya, in his blatant power grab, has moved Honduras down a dangerous path toward less freedom, less security, and less prosperity. He consistently ignored the checks and balances which are essential to a democratic government."

The referendum had been judged illegal by Honduras's highest court and was opposed widely through political and military circles, including within Zelaya's own party.

Soldiers took away Zelaya, still in his pajamas, from the presidential palace Sunday morning and put him on a plane to San Jose, Costa Rica. An interim president, Roberto Micheletti, was selected by the country's Congress on Sunday. Micheletti says that no coup occurred and Zelaya was legally removed by the courts and Congress for violating Honduras's constitution.

"Zelaya has used the Chavez playbook to turn Honduras into a satellite nation for the spread of Chavez's Bolivarian Revolution, joining the likes of Ecuador, Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua and others," Mack said. "It's not surprising that Zelaya decided to head to Nicaragua after his ouster and is being flown by a Venezuelan chartered jet."

By Monday, Zelaya was in Managua for the meeting of the leftist Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), whose member states are Honduras, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

And in his regular "Reflections of Fidel" column Monday, Cuba's Fidel Castro said "what is happening [in Honduras] will be a test for the OAS and for the current United States administration."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich spoke out against Obama's siding with the likes of Castro and Chavez against Democracy on his twitter feed, saying "Sadly the obama administration has joined castro and chavez attacking honduran supreme court and congress for defending their constitution. Having castro call for defending democracy should convince any reasonable person that honduras was on the edge of a leftist dictatorship."

Obviously Obama didn't know the legalities before opening his mouth and now he is backed into a corner, or worse yet, he did know and he still decided to side with Zelaya, Castro and Chavez anyway.

One would think that someone that criticized George Bush constantly and referred to our own constitution in doing so, Obama would have more respect for the Honduras constitution.

At the end of The Hill piece, we see that tensions are about to escalate. Zelaya is determined to go back to Honduras and the Honduras' attorney general said Tuesday that he will be arrested "as soon as he puts a foot on Honduran soil" on criminal charges that could carry a 20 year prison sentence.

"The Honduran Supreme Court, attorney general, and the Congress were right to confront Zelaya as he ignored the law and gutted the Honduran Constitution," Mack said. "The United States and our allies in the region must now stand with the Honduran people to ensure the respect of freedom, the rule of law, and democracy."

Moderate Democrats To The Rescue

Barack Obama's agendas sail through the House regularly, but have had problems in the Senate because of the filibuster option. With Al Franken being triumphant for his Senate seat, that now gives Democrats the number, 60, that would be needed to pass legislation unhindered.

Except, not all Democrats will vote according to party lines.

The moderate Democrats, often referred to as the "Blue Dog Democrats", many of which were voted into office in consercative areas, were elected because they do not always follow party line, they, instead, follow the will of their constituaents and are considered centrists.

These centrists very well may be the only thing standing between Obama's socialistic policies and America.

From The Hill:

Half a dozen members of the Senate Democratic Conference pose the biggest threat to President Obama’s agenda, giving Senate Republicans a fighting chance to block the administration’s major expansions of government.

GOP leaders have begun reaching out to these centrists, hoping they will buck their party on Obama’s two biggest initiatives: healthcare reform and climate change legislation.

Now that Democrats control 60 votes, Republicans must peel off a few members of the majority to stage a filibuster.

Leading the pack of potential defectors are Sen. Ben Nelson, a pro-business Democrat from Nebraska; Sen. Joe Lieberman, a self-described Independent Democrat from Connecticut; and Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Louisiana Democrat who represents a conservative state.

All three have expressed concerns about the core element in Obama’s healthcare proposal: a government-run insurance program that would compete with the private sector. The three also worked together this year to successfully cut more than $100 billion from Obama’s economic stimulus package.

The other Democrats who are expected to voice the most serious objections to either or both of the administrations top priorities are: Sens. Evan Bayh (Ind.), Blanche Lincoln (Ark.) and Mark Pryor (Ark.).

“The Democratic Conference has 60 votes, if they’re all here, and if they are straight party-line that means that Republicans cannot stop legislation,” said Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl (Ariz.).

“[But] it is not all that common to have total party-line votes. If a couple of Democrats don’t vote with their party, then it doesn’t matter that they have 60 votes.”

Count on Democratic leaders to pressure these moderate Democrats, but whether that pressure is enough to force them to vote against their constituency and ruin their own chances to be reelected, is something time will tell, but it is doubtful that some of these politicians would play Russian Roulette with their careers, knowing political suicide when they see it.

If you are a constituent of any of the Blue Dogs, you should be contacting your Senator and making your position on these issues very clear and making it understood to them, they are in office because of the people they were chosen to represent and they can just as easily be replaced in the next election.

A Drop In Numbers For Obama In Ohio

As more of Obama's policies and his spending habits become known and as more details become public knowledge, critics have maintained that his numbers would drop.

Is Ohio just the first or will many other states start following suit?

From the latest Quinnipiac University Poll:

President Barack Obama gets a lackluster 49 - 44 percent approval rating in Ohio, considered by many to be the most important swing state in a presidential election, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is President Obama's lowest approval rating in any national or statewide Quinnipiac University poll since he was inaugurated and is down from 62 - 31 percent in a May 6 survey.

By a small 48 - 46 percent margin, voters disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. This is down from a 57 - 36 percent approval May 6. A total of 66 percent of Ohio voters are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied" with the way things are going in the state, while 33 percent are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied," numbers that haven't changed since Obama was elected.

For Ohio, the honeymoon is over.

Iranian Election Fallout Bush's Fault?

The other day I wrote a piece pointing to how when one country in the Middle East, Iraq, trots down the road of democracy, others start wanting it as well. You see a neighbor who has what you don't, you might just start wanting it.

The Domino effect was discussed when we took on Iraq and how other countries in the Middle East might soon start following the path to Democracy.

In the meantime, in a blatant attempt to spin after Obama got slammed, left and right, for his weak, pathetic response to the atrocities being committed against the Iranian people by their government, the Washington Post reports the White House is trying to credit Obama's Cairo speech with the Iranian uprising.

Excuse me for a second while I laugh hard enough to fall off my chair.

Try this on for size.

The Iranian people look to their neighbors, Iraqi's, who have obtained freedom, liberty and Democracy, hold fair elections where their votes DO count and they see what they want for themselves.

Maybe more people should point out that the Iranian people would not have had that type of example from a Muslim country in the Middle East, if not for...yes, I do dare say it.... GEORGE BUSH.

Today, I open Memeorandum and what do I see?

This Slate piece, titled "Did the Toppling of Saddam Hussein Lead to Recent Events in Iran?"

After the lead in, we get to the paragraph of choice, asking the question:

Which brings me to a question that I think deserves to be asked: Did the overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime, and the subsequent holding of competitive elections in which many rival Iraqi Shiite parties took part, have any germinal influence on the astonishing events in Iran? Certainly when I interviewed Sayeed Khomeini in Qum some years ago, where he spoke openly about "the liberation of Iraq," he seemed to hope and believe that the example would spread. One swallow does not make a summer. But consider this: Many Iranians go as religious pilgrims to the holy sites of Najaf and Kerbala in southern Iraq. They have seen the way in which national and local elections have been held, more or less fairly and openly, with different Iraqi Shiite parties having to bid for votes (and with those parties aligned with Iran's regime doing less and less well). They have seen an often turbulent Iraqi Parliament holding genuine debates that are reported with reasonable fairness in the Iraqi media. Meanwhile, an Iranian mullah caste that classifies its own people as children who are mere wards of the state puts on a "let's pretend" election and even then tries to fix the outcome. Iranians by no means like to take their tune from Arabs—perhaps least of all from Iraqis—but watching something like the real thing next door may well have increased the appetite for the genuine article in Iran itself.

To me that is not even a question, it is simple common sense. When you have been beaten, ruled, and controlled for long enough and you see the example of others that rose above it, managed to get out from underneath a tyrant and doctator, it gives you hope, it gives you courage and it shows you it can be done.

Iranians have seen it, they want it and while this is just the beginning, I do not think they are going to give up wanting their freedom, demanding their votes be counted and fighting for their own rights.

The Washington Post reports they will be holding internal reviews on salon dinners meant to give access to high profile officials for money.

Isn't this like a cop investigating a crime he has been accused of?

It is clear they are setting up their newly hired marketing executive, Charles Pelton, to be the fall guy, because he worded the brochure for the event planned on July 21, 2009, which has since been canceled.

Last week, The Post said a newly hired marketing executive, Charles Pelton, was responsible for the brochure that mischaracterized the first Post dinner, scheduled for July 21, focusing on health-care reform. Pelton, who remains employed as the newspaper's general manager of conferences and events, has not commented publicly since Thursday.

But while Post executives immediately disowned the flier's characterization, senior managers had already approved major details of the first dinner. They had agreed, for example, that the dinner would include the participation of Brauchli and some Post reporters; that the event would be off the record; that it would feature a wide-ranging guest list of people involved in reforming health care; and that it would have sponsorship.

Some members of the newsroom raised objections about attending an event at Weymouth's house. No change in plans was made.

In the meantime, the home this event would have been held in, was none other than Katharine Weymouth, who published an apology Sunday, July 5, 2009:

Dear Reader:

I want to apologize for a planned new venture that went off track and for any cause we may have given you to doubt our independence and integrity. A flier distributed last week suggested that we were selling access to power brokers in Washington through dinners that were to take place at my home. The flier was not approved by me or newsroom editors, and it did not accurately reflect what we had in mind. But let me be clear: The flier was not the only problem. Our mistake was to suggest that we would hold and participate in an off-the-record dinner with journalists and power brokers paid for by a sponsor. We will not organize such events. As publisher it is my job to ensure that we adhere to standards that are consistent with our integrity as a news organization. Last week, I let you, and the organization, down. The Washington Post remains committed, now and always, to the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Nothing is more important to us than that, and nothing will shake that commitment.

So what happened? Like other media companies, The Post hosts conferences and live events that bring together journalists, government officials and other leaders for discussions of important topics. These events make news and inform their audiences. We had planned to extend this business to include smaller gatherings, a practice that has become common at other media companies.

From the outset, we laid down firm parameters to ensure that these events would be consistent with The Post's values. If the events were to be sponsored by other companies, everything would be at arm's length -- sponsors would have no control over the content of the discussions, and no special access to our journalists.

If our reporters were to participate, there would be no limits on what they could ask. They would have full access to participants and be able to use any information or ideas to further their knowledge and understanding of any issues under discussion. They would not be asked to invite other participants and would serve only as moderators.

When the flier promoting our first planned event to potential sponsors was released, it overstepped all these lines. Neither I nor anyone in our news department would have approved any event such as the flier described.

We have canceled the planned dinner. While I do believe there is a legitimate way to hold such events, to the extent that we hold events in the future, large or small, we will review the guidelines for them with The Post's top editors and make sure those guidelines are strictly followed. Further, any conferences or similar events The Post sponsors will be on the record.

We all make mistakes and hope to be forgiven for them. I apologize to our readers for the mistakes I made in this case.

In hindsight, Wapo's review, or should I say the announcement that they are going to be holding these reviews, understand it was the dinners themselves, this latest which would have been held in the home of Weymouth, that were not quite ethical or as they put it "were problematic and should have been rejected during their planning."

Another tidbit that came of this was that this practice is used by other publications, such as The Atlantic, who promptly rushes to defend themselves:

For a half dozen years, Atlantic Media has been hosting sponsored salon dinners in Washington and around the U.S. I don’t believe that any one of these events had any of the ill intention or effect that some have attributed to The Washington Post concept. But we live on a street too close to the brush fire to pretend no interest. So what I thought I might do is give the detail of the Atlantic Media dinners, address some of the concerns I’m reading now on the Web, explain the virtue I see in this work and end with a personal statement and caveat. Biden- A Gaffe A Minute

Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States of America, strikes again.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu has made it pretty clear that he agreed with President Obama to give until the end of the year for this whole process of engagement to work. After that, he's prepared to make matters into his own hands.

Is that the right approach?

BIDEN: Look, Israel can determine for itself -- it's a sovereign nation -- what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Whether we agree or not?

BIDEN: Whether we agree or not. They're entitled to do that. Any sovereign nation is entitled to do that. But there is no pressure from any nation that's going to alter our behavior as to how to proceed.

What we believe is in the national interest of the United States, which we, coincidentally, believe is also in the interest of Israel and the whole world. And so there are separate issues.

If the Netanyahu government decides to take a course of action different than the one being pursued now, that is their sovereign right to do that. That is not our choice.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But just to be clear here, if the Israelis decide Iran is an existential threat, they have to take out the nuclear program, militarily the United States will not stand in the way?

BIDEN: Look, we cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do when they make a determination, if they make a determination that they're existentially threatened and their survival is threatened by another country.

Commentary Magazine:

Well that would be a big shift from Obama’s Cairo speech, in which he declared that no one country could determine if another could acquire nuclear weapons. Is Obama now allowing Israel to be the world’s nuclear watchdog while he assumes some grand position of neutrality, sitting above the fray and unwilling to assert American military power even if facing a nuclear-armed Iran? Perhaps. That would be quite a timid stance, a retreat from America’s historic role as leader and defender of the Free World. But if he’s not going to do it himself, it is a good thing indeed to signal that Israel can defend itself and the rest of the region.

Was Biden simply speaking out of turn or was it a green light? Is Obama playing the "neutral" one while Biden gives the go ahead and becomes the scapegoat should all hell break loose? Perhaps Biden's statements were made in such a way as to get reactions from the Democratic base.

The head of Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence service, has assured Benjamin Netanyahu, its prime minister, that Saudi Arabia would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Earlier this year Meir Dagan, Mossad’s director since 2002, held secret talks with Saudi officials to discuss the possibility.

The Israeli press has already carried unconfirmed reports that high-ranking officials, including Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister, held meetings with Saudi colleagues. The reports were denied by Saudi officials.

“The Saudis have tacitly agreed to the Israeli air force flying through their airspace on a mission which is supposed to be in the common interests of both Israel and Saudi Arabia,” a diplomatic source said last week.

Although the countries have no formal diplomatic relations, an Israeli defence source confirmed that Mossad maintained “working relations” with the Saudis.

John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations who recently visited the Gulf, said it was “entirely logical” for the Israelis to use Saudi airspace.

Bolton, who has talked to several Arab leaders, added: “None of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn’t trumpet it as a big success.”

California IOU's Will Defeat 'Obamanomics'?

Kevin Hassett writes a piece for Bloomberg, a must read. Here is a little teaser:

The California morass has Democrats in Washington trembling. The reason is simple. If Obama’s health-care plan passes, then we may well end up paying for it with federal slips of paper worth less than California’s. Obama has bet everything on passing health care this year. The publicity surrounding the California debt fiasco almost assures his resounding defeat.

It takes years and years to make a mess as terrible as the California debacle, but the recipe is simple. All that you need is two political parties that are always willing to offer easy government solutions for every need of the voters, but never willing to make the tough decisions necessary to finance the government largess that results. Voters will occasionally change their allegiance from one party to the other, but the bacchanal will continue regardless of the names on the office doors.

California has engaged in an orgy of spending, but, compared with our federal government, its legislators should feel chaste. The California deficit this year is now north of $26 billion. The U.S. federal deficit will be, according to the latest numbers, almost 70 times larger.

Palin Bashing Is 'Helping' Palin

As has been pointed out before, the harder the left starts bashing Sarah Palin, the harder her supporters and some of her detractors start pushing back.

The Politico Playbook:

--Sarah Palin. Our sources say lucrative offers have poured in from left, right and center. So far, the skeptical coverage from the MSM (“Morning” Joe Scarborough called it “a jumble”) is HELPING her with her base. Danger: She has to be sure she doesn’t become a self-caricature. In addition to giving paid speeches and raising money for candidates, she plans to raise money and awareness for issues that include treatment of the troops, energy independence and opposition to abortion.

One specific feminist takes on the others that bash Palin, not on her politics but personally, perpetuating not the truth but lies and seems surprised that other feminists have not learned to separate the fact from fiction.

It’s a bit weird to drag all this back here to the lounge, but it’s the setup for the giant, rambling brain dump that’s about to follow. Sarah Palin’s surprise resignation has brought out the crazy again, and reading through the blogs I’m reminded of how much pure bullshit has been said and believed about her and continues to be said and believed. I’m reminded of how so many feminists seem possessed of a wholly irrational hatred for this woman.

Why?

This isn’t going to be the kind of post where I sketch out a pattern and then give you The Key To Understanding It All. This is going to be more like a stream-of-consciousness tiptoe through the violets of my reclusive thought processes. I’ve been puzzling over this stuff since last August. One reason I’ve written as many posts as I have about Palin is because I’m so baffled by the reaction to her. I can’t figure it out. It’s like quantum entanglement or dark energy: I make myself sick trying to understand it and worry that I’ll die before I get it sorted. (I know: Xanax.)

Of course, the first answer you’ll get if you ask feminists why they hate Sarah Palin is that “it’s because she ____” — and then fill in the blank with the lie of choice: made rape victims pay for their own kits, is against contraception or sex ed, believes in abstinence-only, thinks the dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago, doesn’t believe in global warming, doesn’t believe in evolution, is stupid and can’t read, etc., etc., etc., etc.

But none of those things is true. None of them.

It is a long piece but well worth the read.

I stated before, the answer is simple... fear. Those that continue to repeat the lies instead of learning the truth, can't be bothered with the truth, they are too scared to bother.

Palin scares feminists because she is one of them, but refuses to be forced into taking the stances that go against her personal beliefs.

She is a feminist who believes she can raise a family, work, do whatever she sets her mind to, but doesn't follow the "party line" and instead she determines her own personal moral code of what is right and what is wrong.

That is unacceptable to those claiming to be feminists. According to them it is not the "whole" of a person that determines them to be feminists, it is each individual issue and dare to disagree with any specific issue, like abortion, and in their eyes, you cannot be a feminists because you are not jumping on their bandwagon, you are riding your own.

So, while some on the left are asking themselves why Palin Derangement Syndrome must include lies that have been proven untrue and wonder about the iraational hatred, some on the right are also wondering about the appeal of Sarah Palin.

By no means is everyone on the right on the same page as everyone else, but there is an explanation as to what her appeal is.

She is real. Mistakes, flaws and all, she is real.

Barack Obama and his team played hard at the angle of an African American that rose above to become a senator and now president, but Palin shows that one is not always afforded the opportunities to attend an Ivy League college, that a woman does not have to choose between a career and a family, nor that said career must come to a standstill while raising said family.

Are there more people that went to whatever college they could afford, or more that had the means to attend Ivy League colleges.

Are there more children out there right this second that will eventually go to Harvard or more that will attend a community college?

The same reason that her supporters adore her is the reason the far left fears her.

While people speculate about her presidential chances, her experience and her decision to resign her governorship of Alaska, the fact is that months and months after she left the national stage as John McCain's VP nominee, she is still being talked about, bashed by those that hate her, defended by those that love her and written about in almost every major newspaper.

Sarah Palin News Frenzy

When Sarah Palin announced (Video at that link) she had decided against running for reelection as Governor of Alaska and that she was resigning her position as to not become a lame duck Governor in her last 18 months, the media and bloggers went into a frenzy.

Liberal bloggers started speculating and simply making up stories as to why they thought she was resigning, to the point of slander.

It has gotten to the point where the FBI themselves has come out, via and agency spokesperson to state under no uncertain terms that there is no investigation.

"There is absolutely no truth to those rumors that we're investigating her or getting ready to indict her," Special Agent Eric Gonzalez said in a phone interview Saturday. "It's just not true." He added that there was "no wiggle room" in his comments for any kind of inquiry.

Palin then went on to blast the media, as reported by The Politico:

“How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country,” Palin wrote. “And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”

Thomas V. Van Flein, Palin's attorney, issued a four page letter (PDF file), warning the media that they will be looking into legal action against those slandering Palin.

To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as “fact” that Governor Palin resigned because she is “under federal investigation” for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation. This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.

The Alaska Constitution protects the right of free speech, while simultaneously holding those “responsible for the abuse of that right.” Alaska Constitution Art. These falsehoods abuse the right to free speech; continuing to publish these falsehoods of criminal activity is reckless, done without any regard for the truth, and is actionable.

Whatever Sarah Palin's future plans are, there are some that will stand by her loyally and root for her and the more the liberal bloggers and press demonize her, the larger she seems to become in the eyes of her supporters.

I have a feeling this country has not heard the last of Sarah and as those bogus stories about her youngest child backfired against them, this just might as well.
