NEW BUILDING AT AT ST. MATTHEWS

St Matthews UM School in Monrovia (Logantown) broke ground for the new elementary builidng on September 26. The school has an enrollment of over 700.

A NEW HOSPITAL FOR KISSY

UNMCOR recently announced that ASHA has awarded a $400,000 grant to build a 40 bed Mother/child unit. Operation Doctor is working with the Kissy Hospital and UMOR to finish developing the plans and constructing the new unit.

URBAN CENTER PRIMARY SCHOOL TO BE DEDICATED

On October 10 the Urban Center Primary School will hold a dedicaton for the completion of the 4 additinal classroom. A delegation from the Carmel UM Church are in Sierra Leone to participate in the dedication.

With a VIM team from Western North Carolina and the purchase of a generator by Operation Classroom, the W .V.S. Tubman-Gray School has opened an internet cafe.

OPERATION CLASSROOM TO OPEN A NEW SCHOOL IN SIERRA LEONE

The Heritage UM Secondary School opened at the begining of this school year in Kabala, Sierra Leone. The school has been under construction for the past two years by the Rocky Mountain Operation Classroom. The funds for the school were primarily raised by the youth of the Heritage School in Littleton, CO. The school construciton was under the direction of VIM teams led by Les and Hope Law. Rocky Mountain OC is the Western Region of Operation Classroom inc.

Dr David Dunn of Riley Hospital, Ann Newton, social worker, of Greencastle, and Sue Mullendore, a school counselor, of Crawfordsville has been selected to go to Liberia October 23 to November 6 to conduct a trauma couseling workshop for 36 Liberian clergy and lay persons. The content of the workshop will be a basic understanding of counseling, especially as it relates to trauma, substance abuse and Domestic violence issues. This is the 7th counselling seminar Operation Classroom has held in Liberia since 1994. Operation Classroom has also conducted similar workshops in Sierra Leone (4) and Cote d' Ivoire (2).

The program was started by Rev. David V.W. Owen, Assistant to Bishop Coyne and Bishop Arthur Kulah. The Liberia Annual Conference formed a partnership with Operation Classroomto establish the S. Edward Peal Center for Reconciliation and Renwal. They have also placed counselors in 9 of the United Methodsit Schools. $150 spoonsorships for the Liberiaan participants are needed. MAKING A DIFFERENCE ONE YOUTH A TIME

You can make a difference inthe world one youth at a time by providing a work/study grant so he/she can attend school. For $75 you can send a child to school for one year in one of the Operation Classroom schools. You will receive a picture and a bio of the student. You can send a check to the OC office or pay by credit card with the button on the right of the page. Or you can make three payments of $25 each: September, January and March. Stop and think, "What if this were your child?"

BACK TO SCHOOL -- but some youth in Sierra Leone and Liberia will not be included in the back to school crowd because of the lack of funds. For only $75 you can provide a work/study grant for a youth in one of the 15 Operation Classroom schools. INFLATION HITTING SIERRA LEONE

In the past few weeks the Leone exchange rate has risen officially to 3650 to $1.00. Street rate runs as high as 3800. Some feel it could go as high as 4000. Prices of essential goods continue to rise in anticipation that the exchange rate will not stabilize soon. The merchants are raising the present prices for fear they may not be able to recover Moines spent to replace the goods in stock.

1161 boxes of school supplies, hospital supplies and church supplies and church program supplies to Liberia were recently loaded in a container. Over 1200 boxes of school supplies and hospital supplies including nearly 100 chairs, 43 tables, filling cabinets and other supplies were recently loaded in a container and sent to Sierra Leone. In the two shipments there 48 boxes of chalk for each school, 6000 spiral notebooks, 1000+ composition books, 7 cases of paper, thousands of pens, and around 500 packages of loose leaf paper plus art and sewing supplies. The containers should reach Liberia and Sierra Leone in early September.

GRANT EXPANDS KISSY HOSPITAL

The Maternal and Child Health unit of the UMCOR-supported Kissy United Methodist Hospital in Sierre Leone, West Africa will double in capacity thanks to a $450,000 grant issued by USAID's American Schools and Hospital's Abroad (ASHA) Program to UMCOR.

The new facility will increase in maternal bed space from 24 to 48 and the pediatric unit will expand from 10 beds to 23. The grant will also provide a larger outpatient area, consulting rooms, administrative offices, as well as an expanded pharmacy, laboratory and radiology department. Kissy Hospital's Community Outreach Unit will also be housed in the new facility.

UMCOR sought the ASHA grant in collaboration with Operation Classroom and Operation Doctor, Through these programs, work teams will be sent to provide professional support to the three-year construction project beginning in early 2010.

CONSIDER THE OC VBS MISSION PROJECT

This year we are offering two mission opportunities for VBS. The first mission project is purchasing oil palm trees for schools so in a few years they can be self supporting. An oil palm seedling can be purchased for $9. The price includes the cultivating of the oil palm for three years until it be begins to bear fruit. The second is a hands-on mission project of gathering first aid supplies. Promotional material includes, pictures, a devotional and a power point which can be gotten from the OC office.

Funds are needed at both Kissy General Hospital and Ganta Hospital for benevolent care, especially for surgeries. If we can establish a benevolent care fund in both hospitals they will be able to minister those who need help but have not funds. You can make a credit card donation but clicking the donate button on the right or you can send your funds to Operation Classroom marked, benevolent care for and state which hospital.

The Department of Education in cooperation with Operaton Classroom will be conducting a 30 day training session for 44 vocational teachers in Liberia. For $200 you can sponsor a teacher to become trained so they can be more effective in the classroom. Send your funds to Operation Classroom. We can send you the name of the teacher and the subject he/she will be teaching.
