The Port Gamble S'Klallam Native American Culture Holiday Market was held in the Longhouse in Little Boston over the weekend. We went to shop but more to see friends from our carving class.

Girls Weekend Escape

Thinking back, way back, I think this is my first "girlfriends" escape that wasn't Girl Scouts or a business trip. I've taken trips with my sister and my mother but those are a little different. This was just three very compatible women with a common interest in photography.

The weather reports were less than promissing and while we went through heavy waves of rain and drove through the aftermath of a hail storm, everywhere we went we had good weather.

First destination, after stocking up on lunch materials and munchies at Sunny Farms in Sequim, was Neah Bay and the trail to Cape Flattery. A 3/4 mile boardwalk that takes you to the far northwest corner of the Continental United States, overlooking Tatoosh Island.

We checked into our little cabin at the Kalaloch Resort perched on the high bluff. We found a "Girlfriends Escape Package" which included a bottle of wine, desert delivered to our room, a 20% discount at the lodge dining room and the second night was only $50 - heck of a deal when divided by three!

One of our main goals was to see the Roosevelt Elk in the Hoh Rain Forest. We never really accepted the idea that we wouldn't see elk and we weren't dissapointed. We saw two fairly large herds and some beautiful Bull Elk with spectacular antlers.

Our little cabin had two beds in the main room and a third in another room. Sandy and I shared the main room and each evening we got a fire going in the fireplace, got into our jammies, got a glass of wine, pulled the covers up around our chins and Marcia, owner of Morgan Hill Retreat, who recently published her first book, would read a chapter or two to us and we had some great discussions. I really can't remember the last time someone read to me in bed. The ocean, wildlife, hiking, good food, good friends, good weather, good wine and a bedtime story; total escape.

Sunrise and eagles; what a wonderful place to live

Yesterday's sunrise was full of promise and so serene. I sometimes have the hardest time geting motivated to leave the property in the morning; this place is so wonderful as the world around us wakes up.

Last night we watched an eagle fly into a tree where don't usually see the eagles and after a few minutes it worked its way toward the trunk and carefully cut off a branch. It flew toward the water and around the corner. Later the eagle repeated the same branch collecting behavior.

We have had a lot of eagle calling to the point I would call it noisy (but I love it). Perhaps one of the pairs is setting up a new nest for use next Spring.

Puget Sound Clean Air Calendar 2010

Kitsap Beach Watchers

Still unemployed, but using this time to learn and grow and explore options before a new committment takes up much of my time.

Jim and I have started the Kitsap Beach Watchers program through the WSU Extension. This is the first time this program has been offered on Kitsap and while the "start-up" situation shows in the organization and coordination of the initial classes, I have hope it will settle in and be as strong a program as promised. This first section of the year long program meets on Fridays for five weeks. If we are able to go straight through we can complete the entire course within a year. If other obligations get in the way we can pick up the other sections as we are able.

In exchange for the classes we will owe 100 hours of volunteer time over the next couple years but from what we are seeing the volunteering will be very rewarding and there are many options for what type of volunteering we will do.

I'll get some pictures from our field trips and post those along with updates as we go along.

Bear in the woods

For those of you who heard Abby's deep bark this morning, there was a very good reason.

We went to the road to get the newspaper, then across the road to our little woods. Abby's noise instantly went up in the air, the hair on her back stood straight and she started to bark in a noticeably deeper voice.

Abby continued to bark with her nose held high but she didn't venture off the dirt road into the woods. I was sure she had scared a deer and it was now gone so started calling her to head back to the house. I was sure she was annoying the neighbors at this point so enough was enough. Abby stood her ground and just as I was starting to walk away a big black blob slid down one of the trees and started moving through the underbrush. I turned back to get a closer look and a black bear was calmly, but quickly, moving through the woods and into the open back yard of our neighbors.

Hey, Shilo and Neal; have you seen our neighborhood bear?

Although north Kitsap is home to a large bear population we seldom see them in this close and I haven't seen one in our yard since the first couple years we lived here. I wanted to call the bear back and let it know it was welcome to live in our woods but for now it is gone and that is probably best; there are wilder areas where the bear will be happier.

Does anyone know what might create this hole in the bluff? It appears to be created from the outside and is about 8 to 10 inches across.

An early end to the walk; high tide and fallen trees. We could make our way through them but with the tide coming it we might not make it back. Not a bad place to sit a while and turn around.

I glanced out the windwo and saw a spectacular rainbow. I grabbed the camera and got a few pictures and then the rainbow faded . . . and it was gone.

Fall walk at Point No Point, Hansville, Washington

There is never a bad day to take a walk on the beach. The roses along the trail at Point No Point that is lined with wild roses in the early summer is now lined with bright red rose hips which are spectacular with the red roof of the Point No Point Lighthouse.

Our eagles come and go during the year, usually following the food, or temporarily frightened away by the 4th of July noise. In this case the baby raising was over and they were following the food but they are back and I assume that means the salmon are as well.

It's been a noisey return with a lot of chirping and calling. I was so excited when I heard that first call and went outside to see our old friends.

This particular eagle has been in my blog a few times. This is the only eagle that sits in this particular tree and has been using it as a landing spot since it was a fledgling.

Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission 2009 Tourism Summit

I am always a cheerleader for collaborative and cooperative efforts, especially in the tourism industry. The Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission is a wonderful example of a cooperative effort; a portion of each members funds are pooled to create a marketing fund and they all have input on how the funds are spent. This crosses community and county lines. The group does traditional marketing, shared websites and explore new ideas together.

The 2009 Tourism Summit was packed with a variety of people involved in tourism; government officials, business owners, chamber representatives and more. Speakers were both local and one came from Wyoming.

The agenda was filled with great general sessions and relevant breakout sessions. I would have liked to attend all nine offerings but had to pick three, one during each breakout. I am not a great "sitter" but I sat through a full day of programs fully engaged and wanting more.

The theme was "New Economy - Low Budget - High Tech - Growing Trends". Right on target for today - everyone left with things they could apply to their businesses immediately. I thought I was up to speed on social networking but I learned new tricks and some new technology. Did you know that if Facebook was a country it would be the fourth largest country in the world and it is growing faster than any country!

Any tourism organization or business not making full use of social networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc) is behind the curve and missing out on one of the best, free tools available today. I am even more impressed now that I learned more ways to make the networking tools target visitors and get the word out.

I could go on and on about the summit but here is a link to the informaiton. At the bottom of the page are some PDFs of some of the presentations.

One of the themes was Culinary Tourism. There was considerable discussion of what is being done and what can and should be done to fully take advantage of this growing trend. But nothing speaks better than showing what can be done . . .

Did I mention the lunch? It was outrageous! 10 Olympic Peninsula celebrity chefs created multiple items using local and organic items when possible. There were food stations in all corners of the room with temping dishes like: Roosevelt Elk & Berry soup, Dungeness Crab and Oyster mushroom Agnolotti with Mascarpone cheese finished with a Tarragon Beurre Blanc, local Coho Salmon slow cooked on sticks over a wood fire, Northwest Dungeness crab cakes with roasted pepper coulis, basil aioli, Blackberry Pavlovas with Mt Townsend Fromage and this is just a sampling of the offerings.

Branding Kitsap . . . again

I've followed the conversations on branding Kitsap (County or Peninsula). Actually I've followed it over the 8 years I was involved in tourism and the subject came up many times.

First, I strongly believe that any marketing effort needs to be for the Kitsap Peninsula. There are counties everywhere. The word "county" is in no way unique, enticing, or welcoming. "Peninsula" says water, accessible (not an island), has romance and intrigue. From a tourism point of view the word, "Peninsula" is an invaluable tool that very few can claim. Regional or geographic marketing is getting a lot of attention and proving far more effective than "city" or "county" or "state" marketing.

Tourists don't care about imaginary lines across the highway. They do understand crossing a bridge or taking a ferry. They know they have arrived somewhere when they land on the "other side" of a beautiful ferry ride or wide expanse of steel and concrete. Crossing water is something very few can claim. Branding the "Peninsula" would take more coordination and collaboration but how amazing if Kitsap could move beyond the few collaborative efforts (the peninsula wide Museum brochure and others) to a truly peninsula wide effort to market the area.

Back when Kitsap 20/20 was being developed a lot of community members, leaders and government officials gave a lot of their time to develop a "plan" for Kitsap. It was primarily "county" but there was extensive discussion, especially in the tourism committee, about "peninsula". There was also a sub committe on marketing that took on the task of "branding".

The brading that came out of the Marketing committee was "Kitsap, Soul of the Sound". It has a nice sound and was based on all of the following and more - I don't remember the long list of thoughts:

Home and burial place of Chief Sealth (Seattle)
Music, waterfront concerts a part of every community.
Heritage includes all things northwest: timber industry, maritime industry, fishing industry, military.
Cultural diversity: Native American plus multiple other ethnic groups that settled here.
Surrounded by mountains and water and natural beauty.
Access to one of the most beautiful large cities, and one of the most beautiful, remote National Parks.

I believe the KEDA board approved it (it was at least discussed by them) and the Kitsap Peninsula Visitor & Convention Bureau bought the domain http://www.soulofthesound.com/.

All that work and here we go again, spending time and money to again "create" a "brand". Money that will take away from actually marketing.

Kitsap is uniquely special. We are not a county with boundries on four sides bordering other counties. Kitsap is literally the "Great Peninsula" (the real name) surrounded by some of the best that nature and man have created. We are an electic collection of wonderful communities, each a chapter in the Kitsap story. We are almost completely surrounded by water and nature and we are a natural recreation area. We have so much to offer. I hope that any new "branding" effort captures the uniqueness of Kitsap and doesn't fall back on the over used terms that could describe most any area across the county.

Soul of the Sound - at least add it to the conversation.

The BEAUTIFUL Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort

I arrived at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino a little early for an appointment so, camera always with me, I took a few pictures. What a beautiful place and location.

If you haven't been to the hotel it is worth stopping by just to enjoy the beautiful art collection.

The Lobby is warm and welcoming and full of wonderful pieces of Native American art.

There is also a lobby bar so stop, have a drink and enjoy the art and the scenery along Agate Passage.

Ouch - Red Car Off the Road

This was painful to see; a red car off the side of the road in my yard. Abby barked in the middle of the night and I assumed it was a racoon on the deck or some other such critter so just told her to go back to bed. This morning we went out to get the paper and found a neighbors car in our yard.

No one was hurt; the tow truch is now on the way, only a few of my young maples smashed.

Unemployment - Four weeks

Today was a very interesting "unemployment" day. I stated with my unemployment orientation; how to be successfully unemployed. All the rules, timelines and important points to make sure you get your check and don't run into trouble during the whole process. It was actually a very informative and well presented class; completely full. I found myself in good company with a variety of newly unemployed individuals.

I got home and found I had received my first direct deposit unemployment check but better yet I got two serious inquiries about my photos and a friend sent me some suggestions on ways we could colaborate on work projects.

I sent out more requests for networking meetings and got some appointments.

Self employment is looking more and more like the right direction and at this point I have too many ideas jumping around in my head and need to narrow them down into something defineable. More networking should help me sort things out.

Tomorrow; leave the house around 8 AM - home by 12:30 and then a meeting at my house in the afternoon.

So far this has been a very positive process; so many good business friends have been amazingly supportive. Thank you to everyone who has sent a recommendation on LinkedIn, taken time to meet with or scheduled a meeting with me and all those who have just been "friends". A special thank you to those who have sent business my way - you are all amazing friends.

Natasha's Senior Photo Sessions

Natasha and I had a good day today trying to capture a picture to use as her senior picture. We got a fairly early start at Point No Point but there was a lot of wind to deal with. We got some good pictures but decided to try another location and decided to get some more woodland type shots.

By the time we took more photos we had lost the morning light and had to do the best we could with the high sun and Natasha's deadline of the 2:15 ferry.

It was very fun spending the day with Natasha and I was honored she asked me to take her senior photo.

Unemployemnt: SEAP Program

I got the Self Employment Eligibility letter today - the letter I had not received when I went to the class to learn about SEAP (Self Employment Assistance Program). At that time I was told if I didn't receive the letter I would not qualify for the program.

I also recieved the notice for a MANDATORY "Orientation to Reemployment Services".

I guess I was just too far ahead of the program.

So, now I can sign up for the orientation for the CASH program and once I take that (not offered until late December or January) I can "apply" for the program. If accepted for the CASH program, I can then apply for the SEAP (Self Employment Assistance Program). This will allow me to concentrate on starting a business instead of looking for employment.

Meanwhile, for the next few months I need to continue my job search and report three contacts each week. This remains the most frustrating part - finding and applying for three jobs each week that I would be willing to take if offered the job. There just aren't that many out there and I am moving toward self employment. But - I'll do it.

Abby and Alley; Summer Fun

When our summer neighbors came up this summer with a new puppy we were all wondering how our dogs would get along. I posted a few pictures earlier showing how well both were adjusting.

Now as it is almost time for them to leave I wonder how they are going to get along without each other. Neither dog has any concept of a boundry between our properties. Abby was raised playing in their woods and Alley makes us one of her early stops in the morning to say hello.

These pictures were on Abby's deck bed were the two played non stop for over an hour just loving each other, growing, and wrestling. They are amazing together; just too cute!

Evening walk at Point No Point

We went to Point No Point to walk the beach as the sun set. I stopped to get a picture of both the lighthouse and the lighthousekeeper's house. Abby stood in the middle of the picture waiting for me to hurry up and continue the walk. Jim was already down the beach.

This picture so perfectly shows what the right light can do for a picture. A pile of sticks becomes magical as it points to the moon. Today was such a beautiful day without a cloud to be seen and evening was wonderful - perfect for a beach walk.

Unemployment - Three weeks

Thoughts after three weeks of being unemployed:

I am still getting my full pay with accrued vacation so the financial realities of unemployment haven't kicked in although I am fully aware that they will and I have scaled back on what is not necessary.

When we moved to Kitsap I continued working on "the Eastside" and made the insane communte for 3 1/2 years. I was able to get a very sweet "retirement" deal so when it was time to leave I had a a very comfortable cushion and there was no rush to find new employment. When I did I took a 75% pay cut so I have cut back on expenses before but this will be much harder.

Next to the financial cut, the weekly reporting is a bit frustrating. You must make three contacts a week. Basically apply for three jobs that you would be willing to take if they were offered to you. Finding three jobs is almost impossible and the search for these takes away from real job preparation; resume update, networking, considering and researching self-employment opportunities. But, these are the rules and the unemployment is needed so I will follow the rules.

I was dissapointed, when I took the class on job training opportunities, to find out that IF I am deemed by some computer to most likely NOT find a job before my benefits run out, then I will receive a letter qualifying me to take the Self-Employment Assistance Program (SEAP). I was told I could apply without the letter but my chances are null. I'll probably apply - why not?

On the positive side I am loving the free time. Not wasted time but time to take care of things and take care of myself. I am walking more, eating less. Working in the yard is a joy and not a job. I am starting to go through drawers and closets and planning to put some things on Ebay, or at least get them to Goodwill. I want to declutter my house and my mind. I gave myself a facial this morning.

Perhaps if I could have kept my job to something near regular hours time to take care of myself wouldn't come as such a surprise. I used to get on the computer at 7AM and pretty much work, or have work on my mind all day and into the evening. I read the paper for work. I surfed the internet for work. I did social networking for work. I loved it, but I am enjoying the opportunity to be selfish and do these things for myself. I thought I kept things in balance but I didn't. I didn't totally let go of work at any time - I lived it and I am still somewhat engaged, but recovering.

I don't know what is ahead. If I had it to do over would I have made the same decision? Yes, without question - I had to. Ask me again in a few months.
