After downing my Breakfast and Packing my Rucksac I left Oysterber by Car at 0945 hrs and arrived at the start point for the walk in at 1000 hrs, it is above the small Hamlet of Cold Cotes, between Ingleton & Clapham on the Old Road, it was freezing cold here, so I wrapped up well and started off for the summit, I arrived at approx 1135 hrs and decided that there was nowhere suitable to put antennas up that would be sheltered from the extremely cold easterly wind that was howling across the summit. I decided to jury rig a 2 metre Flexible Friend on to my Fishing Pole, extend it to half its height and then lash it to the side of my Rucksac, using myself as the antenna mount. I then set off walking around the western edge of the summit and called g1lat, Stephany who had promised to Log for me, it was far too cold to take gloves off and write things in a Logbook. I was actually g1jyb/mobile as I was walking all the time.

I actually worked 17 stations before having to pull the plug due to the intense cold that I was suffering, the best of these I think was Barnsley South Yorkshire. It was then a quick dismantling of the Kit, packing it into the Rucksac and heading down to a lower altitude as quickly as possible. This really was "Radio In The Raw" but actually I love the challenge of it, operating from above 700 metres at this time of the year is not easy and is for operators who really are looking for the hardest way to do it, I can highly recommend it to everyone in the Group. It satisfies a love of radio with a love of climbing the high hills and believe me, today the scenery was stunning, everything extremely clear due to the low temperatures.

I ran down the first third of the descent to get warm and then walked briskly down the rest to my Car, I arrived home at1345 hrs and then took the dog for a 1.5 mile walk down the River Greta at Burton in Lonsdale. From leaving home to arriving back home was only 4 hours, it seemed like a week, I can tell you.

Below I have listed all the details:

Starting Time from Home 0945 hrs

Arrival time at Summit 1135 hrs

Arrival time back at Home 1345 hrs

Total time Home to Home 4 hrs

Total Distance walked 5.74 miles + 1.5 miles with Dog on return

Height of Ingleborough 724 metres

Total Altitude ascended 455 metres

Grid reference of start point SD 72015 71537

Radio Equipment Carried :

1 - 2 metre Puxing Handheld 5 watt output
1 - 4 Metre Wouxson Handheld 5 watt output (Due to the severe cold weather I decided against working 4 metres, a real shame but it would have been really difficult)
1 - 2 metre Flexible Friend Antenna
1 - 4 metre Flexible Friend Antenna
1 - 7 metre GRP Fishing Pole
Various Odds & Sods.

Other Equipment:

Spare clothing inc 2 pairs gloves
Waterproofs
GPS
Map, Compass, Whistle. This year we went back to the Royal Hotel at Heysham for a wonderful meal. It was nice to see so many of our members and friends in attendance this year, its a shame that Faris could not attend through illness and several of our other members were working. Nice also to see our new members, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Can we thank Brian and Frank for their excellent organisation and it was a wonderful way to start the festive season.

Rochdale Rally

The Rochdale Rally is run by "Rochdale and District Amateur Radio Society" (RADARS) and it is what it says in the advertising info, a traditional radio rally. This is the third event that I have had the pleasure in attending in the last month and I was not disappointed.

The day started with occasional showers and high winds. I started the trip by picking up Mark M0DGK, Frank G8BME, and Martin M0ZIF. The trip to Rochdale was uneventful and found us arriving a little earlier than expected at around 9:15. Once the stall holders were ready the doors were opened around 10:10am and the entrance fee of £1.50 for OAP's and £2.50 for everyone else. Access to the building was good with both a ramp and steps available at the same entrance.

Catering was basic but very enjoyable with a Sausage & Bacon bun and a hot drink costing between £2.00 or £2.50 dependent on the size of the bun.

Cast your mind back to the rally's of yesteryear before computers had become common place and you could happily go hunting through junk boxes for that little treasure you needed to complete a project or see displayed before you air spaced capacitors, crystals, home brew kits ex-military radios etc. Well that's the rally in a nutshell.

Vintage Radios and Components on offer

As you will have gathered from previous postings my interest is in the old wartime and vintage radio's and I was more than pleased with the variety of stands available . There is plenty of information about it on the web, I've just listed a few below that may be of interest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8b7aHPvKdA

Eddystones user group newsletter 6 also has interesting info on the set

Various old dials and components

Tuning Capacitors

This item was for sale because the stall holder had new double glazing fitted and the window it sat in was not big enough to take the horn.

If there was one set at the rally that caught my attention it was the RCA BC348 receiver

BC 348 Receiver

The set that was going for a nice price was the " BC 348" It was probably a steal at £40 but I noticed a few problems that would need sorting. An S Meter had been added which might be considered a good mod but I like classic radio's in as near original order as possible, I was also concerned about the availability of the correct knobs etc on the front panel. However things going in its favor were: That it was being sold as a working radio and that it could now be run from a normal 240v mains socket. The set was originally designed to run from 28v dc via an on board dynomotor.

The BC 348 went into production in the 1930's and was issued in a number of variants indicated by a letter after the model number, in the case of this set it is a BC-348 O. The receiver was fitted in a number of aircraft including the B17, 19 and 29 bomber. The radio was used with the ART 13 Transmitter. If you would like to read up on the set here are a few links that are worth viewing.

http://www.vmarsmanuals.co.uk/new/bc348.htm

http://www.vk2bv.org/museum/bc348.htm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKRez8euQU4&feature=related

Well that's about it for this little review, the guys who traveled to the rally with me went home happy and contented with their purchases and although not a large rally had an enjoyable visit.

All rally's reviewed over the last few weeks would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the organizer's and volunteers who make these events happen. I'd just like to say "thank you" and I look forward to attending the 2010 events.

73/72
Brian G0RDH

Welcome to More New Members

<img style="display:block; The further south we traveled the sunnier it became until we hit some a few fog banks just beyond Warrington, but this cleared nicely into a sunny day and we were greeted with some spectacular views as we neared Colwyn Bay.

John Bright Leisure Centre Llandudno

The venue for the rally was the John Bright Leisure Centre and traders and exhibitors at the rally were located in two fairly large rooms , either side of the central staircase where you paid your entrance fee. Although I did not see a lift disabled access was available.

The rooms in the venue were well thought out with plenty of room to move around without feeling crushed, and there was a nice mix between the private vendors and the commercial emporiums.

The Llandudno rally had the feel of the of the G-QRP Convention as you wandered round the stands. One stand that was nice to see was Ian G4VAP a local radio amateur from Morecambe selling component’s. Ian is well respected for his technical knowledge and love of CW.

The Cafeteria sold a varied selection of food and drink at what seems reasonable prices was my only criticism is that you had a long wait in the queue and if all you wanted was a drink this seemed a little excessive, a separate area for serving drinks would have been handy.

*The Eddystone Bug Key*

The first thing to grab my attention was an Eddystone Bug Key and had I not been there on a mission for another historic item I would have bought it on the spot knowing that this was a rare key, before leaving it I tried the movement of the key and it was a feeling of sheer pleasure, you instantly just felt so at home with it.

The Eddystone Bug Key Model S369

In a report by G3TSS found in the link below the British Model S689 was produced in 1948 and only 350 were ever made. The clip shows individual desks setup as operating positions. What better home could this key have found, I am genuinely pleased the key is in the hands of an amateur who will give it a true home where it will be appreciated and used.

Vintage Military Amateur Radio Society

In closing an excellent display was put on by VMARS that took up four of more tables. It lets people with a common interest meet up with people they may only meet on air, and its not uncommon to see them taking a break from the vendors to discuss what they have been up to within the hobby. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Gordon Gibson G3ZFZ and Jim O'Sullivan G4PPG shown here just to the right of Frank Burrow G8BME and all are members of G-QRP.

In part 2 of the review I thought I would concentrate on some of the items available with traders at the convention, where everything form components to collectables were available.
I am going to start with some of the items that caught my I on a stand sited on the stage run by Francis Norris. I first encountered this gentleman earlier this year at the Atherton rally and included pictures of items on the stand in a review I did earlier this year in the blog.

His stand at the QRP convention had everything from old books & magazines to spares for various radio along with some collectables. Now on to some Classic Radios

RCA VICTOR Model 3-BX-671

This model was produced in 1954 and is bound in a leather case This site can tell you just about all you wish to know about the radio http://www.portabletubes.co.uk/portables/rcastrat.htm The set is really well made inside. At first glance access to the first floor hall in the school seems forbidding to disabled amateurs but access to the talks and hall were available at other entry points where steps were not a problem.

Frank, Hughie and myself travelled down to the convention without any problems on the roads arriving just after 10am.

The rally itself is small by normal rally standards with around 30 traders sited around the sides and middle of the hall. There was ample room for people to move around the room and, should they wish, tables and seating were available for people to have tea and toast and chat with friends.

The first talk was made by Rex Harper W1REX on the subject of The Picaxe Micro- The Perfect Micro for QRPers!

Rex Harper W1REX "the Tuna-Tin man" (see qrpme.com) will be speaking about the Picaxe kit.

Rex started by giving all the people in Lecture Theatre a small printed circuit board on which Picaxe projects could be built. Rex then explained the many functions the Picaxe could be used for that would benefit the QRPer starting with an introduction to very basic programming. W1REX is internationally known for his Tuna Tin projects where a QRP transmitter can be built that fits on a purpose made Tuna Tin. He gave an interesting talk and at the end George thanked him and announced that Dinner was being served in the main hall and it was not long before amateurs were queuing for the famous home-made potato and meat pie served with peas and red cabbage, followed by home-made apple pie and cream, should you like it.

The Eden Valley Project

The second Lecture was by Ron Taylor G4GXO from Eden Valley Radio Society Ron's talk was very interesting as he described the "Eden Project"

Ron explained how the society wanted a project that would develop the technical skills of all members, regardless of experience and produce something that was useful. The end result was an easy to build 70MHz SSB Transceiver with good performance. Ron started by showing full circuit diagrams that he broke down into sections and explain he explained not only how he had come up with the circuit design but why he had chosen to use particular components within the design. This made for an interesting and informative talk and there were many questions from the audience that he was happy to answer towards the end of his lecture.

Our second speaker from the USA was Ken Evans W4DU (President of QRP ARCI) www.qrparci.org

As with all the speakers George Dobbs introduced Ken who since his last meeting had become President of QRP ARCI and George told us something of how they had come to know each other. Ken's talk was very informative covering the work of QRP ARCI including an insight into how "4 Days in May" came about and the Buildathon, an activity that was being run at our convention for the first time. Ken went on to tell us of the Awards and activities that QRP ARCI has to offer. Ken also told the conference about a request he received from an Indian YL and how she desperately needed a transceiver for a group of her students who had recently become licensed This was to become a joint effort between ARCI and G-QRP the full story is available here GQRP Club helps Indian hams. Read the report here.. The Art of QRSS He described it as easy to pack. He then went on to explain the modes used and how signals from this low power device were detected. It worked very well on his holiday and also on a holiday to Turkey when he sited it on top of his wife's parents apartment block where his chief concern was shielding it from the intense heat... his solution was to place it behind a satellite dish. Hans finished the talk by showing us a simple circuit and CW ID chip that he offered us at cost with our callsign programmed on the chip .

This concluded a great set of lectures and a very enjoyable convention.... We left the convention contented along with video footage that George was good enough to agree to us taking. This was the brainchild of Frank G8BME who asked at one of our meetings why the lectures had never been recorded.... It seem such a waste.... Its hoped that the footage taken will be good enough for putting on DVD and that G-QRP can raise a few funds from them. Also for the first time the the lectures were streamed via the internet and questions were answered live by the speakers to people watching over the internet.

This is part one of a two part report on the G-QRP convention part 2 will look at some of the historic radio's on offer by traders.

I hope you enjoyed this review

73
Brian G0RDH
G-QRP Member 12541

On Air With MX0SCG

Brian enjoying a spell on 20m

Paul M1PAF at MX0SCG

Ian G0VGS at the Microphone

So far it has been a great weekend as we celebrate our fifth birthday! Saturday was a busy day with people coming and going all weekend, including a visit from Paul M1PAF, who came down from the Workington Club. A good time to socialise and to get chance to work some radio under the Club Callsign. Chance, also, to get to grips with the Elecraft K3, Ranger 811H amp and the WinTest software in a relaxed enviroment! First time for Martin M0ZIF to take part in one of our events ( thanks for the chilli sausages as well)
We are operating from the home of our new Chairman, Ian G0VGS, who was voted in for our sixth year as a group. Calm and sunny weather allowed us to get the Force12 HF beam to a reasonable height and contact some good stations. It is also JOTA weekend so there are no shortage of stations on the bands. So far things are going very well and we look forward to a pleasant Sunday playing radio and having a good natter with friends.

Yet Another Member

A warm welcome to Martin M0ZIF who parted with his membership money yesterday. in a gale force 9, south westerly, heading for Mann on the “Ben my Chree” to do a bit of SOTA, a bit of Geocashing, some Hill walking and downing some “Okells” The IOM is a wonderful Jewel perched in the middle of the Irish Sea and it never fails to amaze me whenever I make the trip over there and I have been on many, many occasions. The only interest to the Group would possibly be the SOTA activations that we achieved and two of these would not have been possible without the help of G6CRV, G0YLM and G0VGS, thanks ever so much to you Guys. There are 5 SOTA summits on Mann and we managed 4 of them, unfortunately the weather was not good enough to do Slieau Freoaghana, don’t ask me to pronounce that one and so it will have to wait a little longer, a good excuse for a return trip to the Island. We only took 2 metre equipment with us, a Puxing 5 watt handheld, a 7 metre GRP fishing pole and a 5 element SOTA Beam and homemade J pole. The 5 element beam was by far the better antenna and worked very well once I had pointed it in the correct direction. The first summit we activated was Snaefell at 2036 ft the summit is not a pretty site having various telecomm towers and a Mountain Railway Station, fortunately the railway was not working and we had the summit to ourselves only seeing 2 other people on the way down. Next day we attacked Bradda Hill only 766 ft but with the best views on the Island, a magnificent cliff top walk from Port Erin and a really enjoyable day out, a must do if you are on the Island, it definitely has the WOW!!! Factor. South Barrule was the next one to go and a definite hill with wonderful views of the Island, here again we had it to ourselves, just as I like it. By far the easiest is Mull Hill only 556 ft and only just scraping in to attain SOTA status but with wonderful views of Calf Sound and a stunning Stone Circle just down from the Summit. Calf sound is my favourite place on the Island and I had sailed my Yacht “Pisces” through it many years previously, my memories being of seeing Basking Sharks, Seals and catching both Herring and Mackerel, putting them straight into the Frying Pan and eating them whilst completing the passage to Port St Mary. Needless to say we visited the place many times on this holiday but we were too late in the year for Basking Sharks but saw loads of Seals. Being a definite ANORAK, I thoroughly enjoy “Geocashing” we found lots of them and were beaten on only two occasions, it goes hand in glove with activating SOTA summits and takes you to some wonderful places, I recommend it to the Group. If anyone has a few days to spare I can also highly recommend a trip over to the Island, the Ferry operates from Heysham, just down the road and it only takes 3½ hours. If you find it too expensive to take a car over, get on yer Bike like I did in 2003, it’s a great place for cycling and a very cheap way of having a holiday, I can’t wait to return. Hope you enjoy the Photos!!!!

73s Baz g1jyb

MX0SCG This Weekend

To celebrate our fifth birthday Sands are going to be airing our club callsign this weekend 17/18 October. Listen out for MX0SCG on the bands during the weekend on various bands. All QSL's will be answered on request. We will be using an Elecraft K3 with the Ranger 811H amplifier. Depending on bands available the Force 12 C3SS beam or a simple trap dipole will be used. Depending on conditions we may well work 2 metres and 6 metres as well!

MS0WRC on the Isle of Barra

If anybody wants to follow members of Workington Amateur Radio Club on their DXpedition to the Isle of Barra, they have just managed to get on the air. Once again time has passed so quickly. It is our AGM in a week and we have seen a steady increase in membership over the last year. Contesting still is a learning curve for all of us, whether beginners or "old hands". Many people have added skills to the group as we continue to grow. It was nice to also be able to take part in our first CW contests in 2009!
Can we add a special thanks to Barry G1JYB, Kathy M3YOG and Stephanie G1LAT who have provided us with an excellent site for our major contests, also for the food, drink and wonderful support they have brought to Sands. Thanks also to Kev G6FKE and Ian G0VGS for their continuing involvement in training students who are just entering the hobby or wish to learn more.

We now look forward to a busy sixth year both in contesting, special events and just getting out there and enjoying the hobby! It is also nice to have seen so many friends on our social evenings and hope to have many an enjoyable evening in the following twelve months.

SteppIR

Finally the SteppIR is up in the air at the contest site! Here are Barrie's thoughts on the subject, particularly on the Tennamast it is on...

Actually, the mast is stronger than it looks and the SteppIR does not have a large profile, provided that I keep it homed in a South Westerly direction, I think it will be okay as that is the way the strongest winds blow here. When I extend it I will put Guy Wires down, but that’s another job that will have to wait for a while now, it will have to stay in its lowered position until I have the time to sort it out.

I also have to remove a small section of hedge and dig a trench in the field so that I can lower it in the Horizontal plane, it’s all due to the slope of the land, but it will then be very easy to get at all the parts for any maintenance, which I am sure there will be in the future.

In all fairness, I am not convinced that it is the best antenna for UK and especially Oysterber weather, I feel it is too complicated, too many electrical connections and a very badly designed antenna connection, like a lot of antennas these days, I don’t know why, instead of a rigid fixed connecter they don’t encapsulate a length of High quality coax maybe a few metres long and then you can fix a connector yourself and extend the coax to where you want it, the connection being very easy to waterproof, either by putting inside a container or wrapping it with self amalgamating tape and sealing it with good quality insulating tape, Rain in the UK is in my opinion the biggest problem with antennas and to spend so much time designing such a clever antenna as the SteppIR which costs two arms, two legs and an ear and then sticking a cheap and nasty coax connecter on it says a lot.

I speak to a guy in Ayr Scotland regularly on 2 metres ssb and he like me lives on a Farm, he also put up a 3 element SteppIR but it didn’t last, it didn’t blow down, it just could not cope with the UK weather, he has now changed to single band aluminium 3 element beams for his favourites, he says that nothing can really go wrong with them and if an element breaks its dead simple to replace, he has a point I think.

Barrie G1JYB

Steady Progress

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; This year Sands have decided to enter the restricted section and work with a simple dipole and 100 watts only, to be fair we cannot hope to compete with some of the bigger stations out there. It will just be nice to fire up the generator and enjoy the weekend without worrying about winning any prizes. Lets hope that the event is not cursed with the usual bad weather and we see some sun.

Day of the Cross Bay Walk

Well, what a day for it! The weather was very bad right up to and during the walk. For this reason Kev and Ian decided to not go out on the tractor, in fact we were not sure the walk would go ahead at one point. For those not familiar with Morecambe Bay conditions out there are very dangerous and there have been deaths on many occasions apart from the walks, hence the need for caution. Here is a report from one of the two stations we set up..GB2GSB at Arnside Knott.

We set off on time as planned for what promised to be an enjoyable day covering the 25th Anniversary of the Galloway's Society for the Blind Cross Bay Walk. We set off in sunshine but looking across the bay we could see this would not last long once we were in Cumbria. It started to rain not long after we arrived at Arnside Knott and changed our original plan of operating from the hillside in favour of an area that afforded us some shelter from the wind and rain. The team today consisted of Frank G8BME, Brian G0RDH and Steve G1TLQ, Gary M0RGB was hoping to join us later. Setting the 80m Dipole antenna up went well, and with the aid of Andrew G0LWU, who later went round to our other station GB4GSB at Kents Bank, things went smoothly after a minor adjustment to the dipole. Considering our location plans had changed we did well in scouting a location for the antenna and planning a safe and methodical way of getting the station on air. Our station consisted of a K2 Tranciever running 100w into an 80m dipole, and a zero noise floor that most amateurs can only dream about. It was a good call to operate from the car because a few bad weather fronts moved in but did not last long. 80m was very quiet considering this was the lighthouse and Lightship weekend and from contacts we made and listening around it soon became evident that overall conditions were poor with many stations suffering with QSB. Most of the stations worked were Lighthouse stations and despite the poor conditions we were able to make contact with stations around the UK. Early afternoon saw a break in the wx and we got to see some spectacular views from Arnside Knott that no other location could afford some of which have been included for you too see. 73 Brian G0RDH

Morecambe Cross Bay Walk Special Event Stations

Members of Sands Amateur Radio Contest Group will be operating a number of Special event Stations on Saturday 15th August to celebrate Galloways Society for the Blind "The 25th Anniversary of the Cross Bay Walk" led by Queens Guide Cedric Robinson MBE.

The walk generally takes around 3 hours and needs The Queens Guide to navigate between Arnside and Kents Bank safely because of the quicksands around the bay that have taken many lives over the years.

The first appointment was in 1536. The contest has been great and we have smashed last year's score and the amount of stations worked, this was greatly helped by having the 'run' frequency on 20M for several hours. Everybody has enjoyed themselves and we thank the residents once again for putting up with us for yet another year.

Sunday Morning.

What a change in the weather this morning. It is pouring down and getting quite windy, still, we are warm and dry in the Reading Room here at our location. It has been a steady night on the bands, mostly covering 80M until greyline approached with the dawn. Brian and Kev worked through the night and added steadily to the score. At the moment we are down on last years rate of contacts but we have many more points with using the multipliers to great success! We will probably concentrate on 20M and above until the end of IOTA at 12:00GMT and allow some of the dipoles to be dismantled ready for the departing tide later in the afternoon.
