The Samarra attack was met with a wave of reprisals, Sunni mosques were burned, imams killed, and the death toll was said to be near 1000. Why go for a sequel? Sunnis realize that they will lose family or bretheren by these attacks.

As I said before, the khwarij are back. Given so many reports like those of today about bombings of Shias it occurs to me that I did not really articulate my point well. With so many bombings and killings it cannot be doubted that some Sunnis and others are fomenting civil war. My primary concern is with whether those who support US withdrawal must be so terrified by the prospect of civil war that they compromise their demand that US troops withdraw. As I pointed out and used Brzezinski's statement to support, perhaps we need not be so worried about the prospect of civil war because Sunnis are only 25% of the population and both Shia and Kurds have some common interests (they both have oil and want a loose confederation)and thus are likely to combine against Sunnis so that Sunnis would likely lose. Both Kurds and Shia also have their own militias with which to combat Sunnis. I don't wish to see a civil war but now that W has destabilized the country I do not want exaggerated fears of civil war to keep us from getting out.James A Bondhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17052655149783273982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3463907.post-1145025351841599742006-04-14T10:35:00.000-04:002006-04-14T10:35:00.000-04:00I think this signals a new orientation - Sadr has ...I think this signals a new orientation - Sadr has now placed himself in a very unique position: he has criticized the Iranians for using Iraq to settle their own political affairs (with the US), criticized the Americans, embraced the Sunnis. This means one of two things: either he will continue to rise as a political force in Iraqi politics, or he will be assasinated. The interesting thing is that he basically gives the Americans eveything they 'officially' want, and you realize that they don't want him to want it.Tarek D.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11040719955936606752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3463907.post-1145016621705051512006-04-14T08:10:00.000-04:002006-04-14T08:10:00.000-04:00On Cheney, Rumsfeld order, US outsourcing special ...On Cheney, Rumsfeld order, US outsourcing special ops, intelligence to Iraq terror group, intelligence officials say by Larisa Alexandrovna

' "These guys are nuts," this intelligence source said.
