I've been really sensitive about this issue as it directly affects me. Some dickhead on some message board went through my site and decided that because I had taken vacations years ago and that I had my own website while having a child on SCHIP that I was the healthcare equivalent of a Cadillac driving welfare mom and I went postal on him! It wasn't the most mature thing I could have done, but what's the point trying to debate the kind of person who has already made up his mind about somebody who they don't even know and would drag a family through the mud to make a political point.

As for paying for this program, unless you smoke, you're probably not paying for it. The worst thing is that money to help insure our kids is being spent instead on this ridiculous war. Ggggrrrrrr, it all makes me so damn angry that I wind up taking it out on this one not-so-bright right wing blogger guy.Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17601863377056165200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3442230.post-90029059277410044372007-10-18T19:32:00.000-07:002007-10-18T19:32:00.000-07:00Hopefully you didn't think I was aiming that comme...Hopefully you didn't think I was aiming that comment about "some dick" at you and your family; I would never peg you, personally, as someone who would work the system when an alternative was available. That being said, there are plenty of them out there and I'm all about quashing that.

Yeah, I don't think you're going to ever see the private sector step up to cover low-income insurance needs. They like their profits too well, and there's not enough money in breaking even or losing, I suspect. Corporations never did come with a sense of heart, sadly.

Given what I pay into the system, I guess I'd kinda expect some socialized medicine options to be happening. Lower my taxes and I'll quit bitching so much, but I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon. Hopefully we'll ALL make it through this administration and on to something that matters.tarsi210http://www.blogger.com/profile/02373809258182250844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3442230.post-56933446879087892482007-10-18T16:25:00.000-07:002007-10-18T16:25:00.000-07:00I am struggling to stay afloat. With what I make as the only income in a family of 3, I can't even afford to have my wife or daughter covered on the group plan that my employer provides. I don't see the private sector stepping up to provide affordable health insurance to people who need it, and when the private sector fails, it's time for the government to step in and do what's right. Every other civilized country in the world has some kind of socialized medicine, and it's going to happen here. I just hope my daughter is covered for the next year and a half that our country is subjected to the nightmare that is this administration and congress.Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17601863377056165200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3442230.post-74690872732631243352007-10-18T15:12:00.000-07:002007-10-18T15:12:00.000-07:00I went and read up on this bill since I didn't rea...I went and read up on this bill since I didn't really know any details about it, and you inspired me to find out. It seems like the pissing match between the parties is about the various strategies for managing "crowd-out" -- people who take on S-CHIP when they can get health coverage from their employer, but since S-CHIP is free....

In principle, I can't disagree with the efforts to try to limit such situations. Frankly, I'm surprised there aren't very strict restrictions in place about this already, and apparently some states are more strict than others. I don't need some dick with perfectly good health insurance via their employer to be using my tax money because they're thrifty.

That being said, we pay an exorbitant amount right now for family health insurance, and I am well-above the poverty level. Insurance itself is a horribly out-of-control thing anyway.

I don't know. In terms of spreading outright misinformation about the bill, the Republicans are to blame as far as I can see. Most of them, including the president, don't know their ass from a lightbulb. That being said, the Democrats should have probably tried to tone things down a bit to make it pass easier, as most Republicans have stated that a few simple additions to the bill would have done the trick. Seems stupid to hold up something that most people agree is needed (and is funded by tobacco, which I'm *totally* for) just for a few points. The Dems are trying to be too idealistic about their coverage hopes.

We're not eligible for S-CHIP, not even close, so it's not something that affects us directly one way or the other. However, I'm all for helping out families who are making legitimate efforts to keep themselves but the huge expense of insurance for their kids isn't something they can shoulder, or they do in lieu of buying groceries.tarsi210http://www.blogger.com/profile/02373809258182250844noreply@blogger.com
