Roughly 5% of writers make a decent living, while the others barely scrape by. There will probably be recriminations. When I entered broadcasting in the 5th largest market, there were 44 AM & FM stations and about 21 owners. When I left that market the landscape changed. It grew to 66 stations and about 7 owners--conglomerates who just happened to own TV stations, Newspapers, Outdoor Advertising companies, Kiosks in shopping malls, Advertising in parking garages and even on restroom walls. That's why I feel scale and scope must apply to AFTRA/SAG/Actors Equity/IATSE/and AFM, the Musicians union to merge into our own. But I grow tired listening to my own idealism. In the current market I'm in, 97% of us are on hiatus thanks to no work and escalating union dues because morons in 2003 failed to show up and vote for the merger. I am still pissed about that. So, I support the writers! But they need job protection when the strike is over.
