I'm just completely blown away by his playing. He's so fast, and the harmonics are insane, especially coming out of the heavy melodic riffing, and on a fretless no less. In the video, he talks about not limiting yourself with just bass lines, but to learn the melody as well. Many of his lines were based more on sax solos than traditional bass.

I do know about the unfortunate incidents leading to his death. I think he was diagnosed with some serious personality disorders and the drugs and booze didn't help with it. I think a lot of the real genius musicians have a screw loose somewhere.Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17601863377056165200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3442230.post-86955345153293947422008-11-22T10:46:00.000-08:002008-11-22T10:46:00.000-08:00Jason: I actually saw the late Jaco Pastorious liv...Jason: I actually saw the late Jaco Pastorious live in concert with Weather Report. Were it not for his forway into drugs and his subsequent violent death (which I'll spare you details of) we would still have this brilliant genius with us. He was a master of using feedback and harmonics and he was quite the showman. He was not flashy. But rather, a sort of Jimi Hendrix of the bass who would place it flat on the stage, walk away then run back and pick up the instrument and just dazzle us! I relate to this Blog. I am practicing the 5 position Pentatonic scales here on this end. Unfortunately for me, Bud is not my next door neighbor. I feel that Bud has the gift of either taking the theory path (and making it interesting) or customizing an approach that fits each student, since he is an amazing teacher. Not too many teachers have this gift. Believe me, I've had some rotten tomato's for teachers in my past. But I was so happy to see this photo of you with the bass. I'm finding myself in a spot where I'm considering re-learning how to read music, just so I can attempt to play jazz out of the Real Book, and basic theory is going to help with improvisation. Even when I could read music as a kid, I could never really sight read, though I'm getting to the point where I can sight read basic chord charts. I'm going to a jam with my new teacher on Friday at a studio where I'll get to try playing a Steinberger 5 string electric upright!Jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17601863377056165200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3442230.post-51972090095141216292008-11-19T05:52:00.000-08:002008-11-19T05:52:00.000-08:00This is fantastic news.
