Perfect days for building the new library, that is. Workers have almost finished pouring the footings, and hope to begin pouring the building slab next week. Slowly but surely the new library is coming along!

Rain has delayed work on the new library, but drier weather this week gave the employees time to do more site preparation. Below we see the front section of a ditch that is being dug to handle rainwater runoff. The other photos show the big flat space where the Library's foundation will be poured. Slowly but surely, the new library building will rise. The new library building is paid for from the .01 sales tax and private donations.

Yeargin Potter Shackelford Construction Co. from Greenville was the low bidder for the Library project. The company built the Cooper Library at Clemson, the Mack Library at Bob Jones University, and the school media center at Dorman High School, Spartanburg.

Work on the New Library Begins!

MLG brings their equipment to the site on February 17. Work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, February 18 but is delayed due to rain. Thursday is a sunny day, and grading begins. Asphalt and other debris will be milled, measured, and weighed before being recycled as fill. These details are an important part of the Library's qualifying for LEED certification.

He talked about his boyhood in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois.

He even told us why he grew his beard!

New Library Update

Bids for the new library were advertised Sunday, Nov. 16, and will be advertised through South Carolina Business Opportunities and the Index - Journal. The bids will be opened in December, and we should know the general contractor before Christmas. Construction on the new facility should begin January 2009. Super Dog Comes to Story Time

It's a bird...it's a plane...NO! IT'S SUPER DOG!

Story times at the Greenwood County Library are always lots of fun, but this week was special when Super Dog (secretly known as Juke Fuller, mild mannered guardian of the Fuller Family) paid a visit. He set a great example by sitting quietly and listening as the Bat Lady (a.k.a. Miss LeVerne) read Halloween stories and led the children in Halloween dances and songs.

Cormac - The Tale of a Dog Gone Missing

The Southern Writers will discuss Cormac - The Tale of a Dog Gone Missing by Alabama author, Sonny Brewer on Saturday, November 1, 1 - 2 p.m. at the Greenwood County Library.

Based on a true story, Cormac is ultimately a love story between a man and his dog. The author, Sonny Brewer adopted beautiful golden retriever, Cormac, when Cormac was a puppy. While Sonny is on his first book tour, Cormac runs away during a thunder storm. The Brewer family walks and drives through neighborhoods searching for their dog. Sonny enlists his friends to find Cormac, and, after an unsatisfactory conversation with the director of the local pound, calls his lawyer.

Whether they're dog lovers or not, Sonny's family and friends are impressed by his passion to find Cormac. If you enjoyed Marley and Me and My Dog Skip, Cormac is a perfect choice for you.

Update on the New Library

The bids for general contractors were opened Tuesday, September 9. The lowest bid, $9,050,000 was over $1 million higher than the budget allowed for building the new library. The architects and engineers went back to the drawing board and reduced the size of the building by several thousand square feet. The new Library will be 44,000 square feet - still more than twice the size of the current facility. The project will be rebid, and we hope to have a contractor before Thanksgiving.

Friends' Book & Rummage Sale Sept. 28 - Oct. 5

The Friends of the Greenwood County Library will hold the annual Book & Rummage Sale at the Greenwood Mall on Sunday, Sept. 28 - Sunday, Oct. 5, during regular Mall hours. We offer a wide variety of books in hardback and paperback, fiction and nonfiction, for adults, children, and teens at bargain prices.

All funds raised are used to enhance library programs. In the past the Friends have supported performances by

Exciting news!

Bids for a general contractor were advertised a couple of weeks ago in SCBO (South Carolina Business Opportunities) and the Index - Journal. Interested contractors may bid until September 9 when bids will be opened. Work on the new library should begin by the end of September/early October. Keep watching the blog for updates - and keep your fingers crossed!

Families Enjoy New Picture Books!

These young readers are enjoying the great selection of new bilingual and Spanish languge picture books provided by members of the Emerald City Rotary Club. The ECRC is a strong supporter of the Friends of the Library, and has made service to Greenwood's children a priority. The ECRC provided funds for the Rotary Field at the YMCA and helped fund a van to transport diabetic children.

Spanish lanuage speakers will have a great new collection of Spanish and bilingual children's books to enjoy this summer - thanks to members of the Emerald City Rotary Club. Myra Shaffer (left) and Fran Wiley (right) presented the collection of picture books to the Greenwood County Library on behalf of the Club. Prudence Taylor, Library Director (center), accepted them for the Library. Books should be ready for checkout by July 15. Each book will have a special gift plate honoring the donor, and the collection will be named for the Emerald City Rotary Club. The books are intended to help local Spanish - speaking families settle into the community, learn American customs, and learn English - one of the many efforts the Rotary Club has made to support Greenwood's children. Other club projects include the Rotary Baseball Field at the YMCA.

It's a Great Day to Break Ground!

Saturday was a wonderful day for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Greenwood County Library.

Sara Smith, Chair of the Greenwood County Library, welcomed the crowd to the event, and she went on to thank the library staff for its daily hard work and service which made the project possible.

Over 150 people gathered in two tents to hear representatives from the County Council, City Council, State Library, and Library Foundation talk about the economic and educational impact the new library will have on Greenwood. Following the remarks - which were short and sweet - everyone enjoyed great barbecue from Stump's.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible.
