In neither case did I call ahead. A recent aha for me is, don't call a seeker if you can go see him face-toface. Calling is too impersonal. Half of the way we communicate with someone is non-verbally. I don't want to just be a voice on the phone. In my book going to someone's house increases the possibility of having a substantial conversation tremendously over a phone call.

I had two prospects and I found them both home and had opportunity for further establishing the bonds of friendship in each case. The Two Debbies had talked last week to a Hilltop artist, a man who with his wife and infant had visited the Baha'i devotional we had in Wright Park some 6 years ago. At their suggestion, I stopped by his studio to give him a personal invitation to come to our arts-oriented devotional. When I knocked on the door, without knowing who I was, he said, "Come on in." The door was unlocked. I went in. He was at his computer, surrounded by his artistic creations in all stages of development. I extended my invitation. He couldn't come last night, but said he would consider it. I said I'll send him some links to the posts I've done on our weekly event.

Next I visited the Coach, a dear soul who coaches youth football in the neighborhood (yes, the Coach is in this picture). It was my fourth visit. He, too, was home, inviting me in immediately. I asked about his job interview he had scheduled for last Thursday. I said I had prayed for him at the appointed hour. He told me what it was like and that he is waiting to hear if he made the cut for the next interviews.

He also told me about how he had just the day before had a conversation with a friend about religion in which he brought up the Baha'i Faith, defending it in the face of the woman's immediate negativity. He had never heard of the Faith before being visited by the friends during the last Intensive, yet here he was explaining to her what it teaches and why he is attracted to it.

I gave him the new Introduction to the Baha'i Faith brochure with prayers. I extended an invitation to come to our devotional scheduled for 7 and mentioned, too, Tim & Deb's devotional with waffles on Sunday. I invited his 7 year-old grandson to come to a children's class on Sunday. He talked to his daughter about her going as well. She said it would be hard to go, because she has an active little 1 year-old. I told the Coach that we could bring the children''s class to the home.

But what really struck his interest was my offer to study the Baha'i Faith with him right there in his own home. He agreed to that immediately. We'll start next Wednesday at 5:30; yes, I have a study circle the same evening, starting at 7, but that's the best day for him.

My lesson of the day is, even though our inclination is to invite people to scheduled events and activities, the best bet is to first offer to conduct a core activity in the home you are visiting. Generally speaking, people are simply much more comfortable establishing a relationship with the Friends and investigatingthe Faith in the comfort of their own home. -gw

I had a great time, and I learned something new about the host. Until today I didn't know that Tom, one of the premiere story-tellers in our community BTW, did some professional acting when he was younger. Ask him about the time they were filming a bank robbery scene outside a bank when the real police arrived. Seeing the pictures of Tom in his old acting portfolio gave me a sense of the passage of time. Before going out they said prayers for the departed ones they were calling on for assistance, and prayed that they would be led to a waiting soul. They saw a man at a house with handicap access (number 919) and thought that looked like a good house for Bahá’í gatherings! The man was receptive and said he looks out for the neighborhood. He wanted to come to something, so they invited him to the devotional the next day, and he did attend. He said he was happy to be somewhere positive. They went to find a young lady who had declared in a previous cycle. The person at the door said the family had moved, but that he knew the new address. They immediately went to the new address and found the new Bahá’í brother there who also expressed an interest in the Faith.

Another team met a man and his children as they approached their door. The man was very skeptical about religion, but the more he heard about the Faith the more he said it resonated with him and he was interested in learning more. His children, ages 8 & 11, had been expressing a desire to get involved in a church, but he was reluctant because of the indoctrination of churches. He was a very nice and genuine person who was very straightforward, and he welcomed us to come back to share more about activities that his children could attend. He was also going to talk with his wife about it and have her look on the internet.

A team member had made a strong personal connect with one of their neighbors, so the team went there to visit. The team felt a closeness in prayer and were able to bring this into the neighbor’s home and make a heart connection with him. They talked about children’s classes. They also spoke about the death of the neighbor’s brother five years ago that was still impacting their extended family, and a prayer for the departed was offered. He said to come back anytime.

A new Bahá’í who used to live in the neighborhood went with a team to visit several old neighbors. They visited a minister who coincidentally had been visited by another team in a previous cycle. They talked about children and junior youth, the difficulties of being involved in the churches (especially money issues), and how happy the new Bahá’í is. The new Bahá’í feels his friend is receptive.

A team came to a home of a mother and daughter. The mother was an older woman, part of the “liberal faction”, raised in the 20’s and not religious. Both said they were not interested in religion, but the team was surprised when they were invited in. The emphasis on the core activities with the goal of creating a better community was well received by these women. They had two separate conversations going. As one team member spoke with the daughter, she was able to share how the groundwork must be done to establish these communities and the lady was able to see how religion relates to that. Had the team emphasized the religious aspect first, they would have rejected it. They felt that this new approach awakens people to the vision of the Faith that is positive and uplifting. When they left, these women felt hopeful and wished the team much success.

One team came upon some neighbors who were outside visiting so it was easy to approach them. One of the ladies was Mormon with an 11 year old and was very interested in hearing about junior youth activities in the neighborhood. Her husband came down to join the discussion and then the conversation turned. He was very negative and thought it sounded like a cult, so that sort of cut off the wife’s interest. Another lady in the group was just moving into a new place after being homeless for five years and was interested in working with youth. They got her number. They went to a house where there was loud music playing. When there was a pause in the music, they knocked loudly. A young man answered and said he was very interested but was getting ready to leave and that someone should come back another time. He was raised Catholic and Baptist. The team really liked the new approach, and said it feels much more natural and they got good feedback. If they mentioned “Bahá’í Faith” at the beginning, people said “no thanks” but if they said “Bahá’í community” they were more likely to listen.

Another team met two ladies who were not interested at first when they perceived we weren’t Christian, but as one team member explained our love of Christ it changed the focus and they were able to continue the dialogue. When the importance of prayer was brought up, one of the ladies invited the team in to pray together and gathered the family for prayer. She wanted to hear more about the Faith first, so they started the presentation. They sat at the dining room table and proceeded while one of the ladies made dinner. They were in the bosom of the family withteenagers coming and going, eating, etc. There was an interest in life after death. They finally got around to praying and one lady said the “Refresh and gladden” prayer. She said that was a good prayer for her as she has anxiety. They said to come again as they need this, and want to start a devotional and junior youth group. They discussed joining the Faith, and she said she is going to pray about it.

A team visited a young woman who said she was Mormon for over 6 years and was ‘burnt’ with religion. The core activities were shared and she expressed more interest. Her son is 18 months. Her husband joined the conversation on the porch and his interest further ignited his wife’s. They wanted to know more about Bahá’u’lláh, so a short rendition of the concept “manifestations” using the presentation quotes was offered. Both werevery interested in learning more a meeting was set up for the following Thursday afternoon. Leaving the home the team expressed that they wish they could have stayed longer because their hearts were connected but they were honoring their new friends’ planned activities for the day. Suddenly the door behind them reopened and they were invited to come back for a drink of water. The young woman returned with plates filled with dinner for everyone! The cook, an uncle who lives 2 blocks over, joined the conversation and shared that he also wanted to hear the presentation on Thursday with his nephew. As they left he said, “You are doing very good work, don’t stop!” Part of this team later met a neighbor of this family who was very cynical about religion and when opening the door said, “Jesus right?” “No,” we replied, “Bahá’í!” He said he never heard of the Faith and began asking questions. He shared that growing up he was never allowed to ask questions and was enthralled with the principal of individuals investigating truth. He invited himself to the neighbors’ on Thursday to hear more. The next day the team ran into the lady they had met the previous day who had invited them back for a visit. The team member told her a neighbor had invited himself to come on Thursday and asked if this was okay. It is the first time I imagine that
anyone has passed to the semifinal round of any of the various versions of
"Idol" by singing a song about 'Abdu'l-Bahá.

For those who don't speak Portuguese, the contestant Natacha was asked where
she was from, and mentioned that her mother was Persian, leading one of the
judges to ask if she could sing anything in Farsi. Although somewhat taken
aback (she had planned to sing something else), she obliged, and well... I couldn't have asked for a better bunch of people to share the day with. As it was my first time facilitating such a discussion, it was challenging to keep up with the range of views and the very quick twists in the conversations. Sometimes I felt the points raised were outside the topic we set out to explore, but it was difficult to interject when some participants clearly want to say something, and conversations were so animated. It was also difficult to truly listen deeply when replies come fast and furious. Free-flow conversations would probably work better for a brainstorm-type discussion rather than a dialogue-type setting.
In truth, we discussed about a wide range of topics, but for some reason, I came away thinking that religion holds valuable lessons in how to live one with nature, but until we learn that we really need to mend our ways, it seems our shabby treatment of our own living space is set to continue. Human beings seem to only respond when it is something urgent, not something slow like climate change. The participants are already environmentally-conscious, but do they represent the majority? I don't know. Can religion be the answer? Maybe. Would it morph into yet another tool of control in a new domain such as the environment? The class was in very good hands, however, as this Monday morning report from one of the Baha'i teachers is a clear indication. -gw

Three of us along with four children visited with dear Kenyan friends Sunday afternoon. The delightful young mother was home together with her mother, two teenage boys I’d not previously met, and four children who had participated previously in classes. Their uncle was not in thehome as he’d gone to teach an Arabic class in Kent. We visited a while with mother & the baby while the grandmother worked on embroidering a bedspread and the teenagers were watching a soccer match on TV.

Then we offered to share some prayers. The kids were called to come join us and we began our class, with the grandmother and teenagers in the room. The mother was fully engaged and kept the baby in the heart of the action too. We shared some prayers, but the boys felt too shy to share today in spite of their mother’s encouragement. Then we sang “We are drops” a couple of times and the boys began to join in. We reviewed some of the quotes they’d already learned like the “prefer your brother” quote and “So powerful is the light of unity..” and then reviewed the hand actions that went along with it.

When we saw how engaged the boys were with the hand motions, we decided to teach them how to sing “Blessed is the Spot” while using the hand motions, and sang that together a couple of times in English and once in Spanish. We talked about the meaning of that prayer and then introduced the quote from lesson #2 “O Son of Spirit! My first counsel is this: Possess a pure, kindly and radiant heart.”

We said the quote together a couple of times and then sat on the floor in a circle and rolled a small, soft ball from one person to another while saying the quote one word at a time. Then we said the quote all together a couple more times and then used the ball-rolling technique to learn each other’s names: rolling the ball to a person and asking them to say their name.

Then we pulled out the coloring sheet and while everyone colored, we used the technique in Ruhi Book 3 to illustrate the meaning of key words in the quote. Where appropriate I substituted the kids’ names for the unfamiliar names in the examples which they all enjoyed; e.g., “Hasani has to decide whether to spend his money on cookies or on a story book. His parents counsel him to buy the story book. His parents give Hasani wise counsel.”

After coloring we played a game together: I brought a small stool and challenged the kids to see how many people could fit on the stool together, using their pure, kindly, and radiant hearts to work together. They had a lot of fun trying to figure it out. We left their home at about 4.45pm. I was so happy we were able to use 4 of the 5 elements of the Ruhi-style children’s class: Prayers, songs, coloring and playing a game.

Last weekend when I taught the class, one of the children from this Muslim family asked me, "Are you Muslim?" I said that I was a Baha'i and believed in all of God's Manifestations. His sister said, "Baha'is are like Muslims." -gw

Photo: "December 7, 2007 - Kenya.

Last night at Baha'i Feast there was consultation on following-up on our recent Intensive Program of Growth. Today there was action. -gw

Hi Friends –

A short report of today’s activities (so far!):

Deb K called me this morning and said she had some free time from 11:30-3:00 and did I want to go try some follow ups. I said “sure!” I called Betty and she was home and said we could come by around 1:30.

We met at the Safeway and drove together over to the home that Mauricio had made a few efforts to follow up on. The lady who remembered Mauricio’s visits said they were just getting ready to go out. There were a few children there. There’s more info to share, but the upshot is, she invited us to come back tomorrow at 4pm to do a children’s class and pray. ...

Next we went to visit at the home where Kimberly and David live. The number we had didn’t match the house that Deb K thought was the right one, so we tried the house with the number we had. Turns out it was the wrong house, but a nice young woman answered so we went ahead and struck up a conversation with her. She said she and her roommates would like to hear more, so we made a date to come back tonight. ...

We went to Betty’s. Had a nice visit with her, and she and Debbie made a good connection. We talked about how best to proceed there and decided to go ahead with a children’s class this Saturday, 1pm, but if it ends up being mostly parents with small children, we will be flexible. I’m hoping we will be getting to know folks better and things will go forward from there. While we were there, we stopped by and visited with the apt manager and told her we’d be there on Saturday. We also revisited Shi, who had been the most enthusiastic person we’d met when we did our door-to-door visits. She remembered me, said she would be there at 1pm on Saturday for sure, and she would let others know. Such a friendly gal! She is 19 years old and has two young children.

Deb K went back to work and I decided to stop by Mary D’s, since I hadn’t spoken with her since Shadi and Alonso had visited. Oschai was there with his baby and Mary, so I got to visit with both of them. I talked with him about a study circle and he continues to be interested. He can’t come to George’s tonight as the baby is sick, but said Wednesday is his day off, so normally it would be good. I said we could arrange something there if that would work better for him. I asked him about what interested him about Shadi’s presentation and he mention about God being unknowable and several other things that let me know he really was taking it in. Mary also commented on how they all had been very attentive and that Shadi’s presentation was so good.

Bahais in Scotland were involved in the production of a multi-faith resource called "Values in Harmony" - the promotion of good community relations described by 11 religions and beliefs in Scotland" This includes the Golden Rule as found in the 11 different faith and belief traditions. The Project was funded by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission and launched by the Scottish Government Minister for Community Safety. The result of this collaboration, led by Geoff Lachlan of the Scottish Inter Faith Council is available for download (pdf, 2994 Kb) It is intended to be a tool for promoting better social cohesion especially between Faiths and beliefs. Its target audience is youth and women. Though it is for workshops it is an excellent stand alone resource that enable us to celebrate our commonality with other beliefs, rather than focus on what divides us. The aims were obviously resonant with Bahai values and we were happy to be involved.

http://scottishinterfaithcouncil.org/resources/VALUES+IN+HARMONY.pdf

PROMOTING “GOOD COMMUNITY RELATIONS” -

THE CONTEXT

THE FAILURE OF MULTICULTURALISM

In his most recent book,
The Home That We Build Together, the Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
stated:

“Multiculturalism has run its course, and has not led to integration but segregation.
