Hey yo...

If you haven't seen by now, the nominees for the Westword Music Showcase have been announced and the voting polls are now open. Support local hip-hop by voting and if you feel like someone got snubbed, let us know here or you can write some names in on the ballot.

How does the showcase nomination process work? Well there's a committee of like 100 folks in the local music scene. Promoters, talent agents, artists, club/bar owners, writers, etc. Of course no one is allowed to nominate any crew they're in or affiliated with. All those nominations are lined up with the Westword editors' choices and those with the most nominations get on the ballot.

Then fans, friends, and family vote for the artists on the ballot and the that's how the winners are decided.

If you guys are free Monday night (April 13), I'll be "DJing" (meaning, playing songs from my iPod... LOL) as part of the Westword vs. Westword night at Larimer Lounge (2721 Larimer St.). It's been interesting to see all these Colorado hip-hop sites popping up across the web these last few months. I started this blog back in the summer of 2006 because the local scene was STARVING for some coverage. Although we had freshsites.com and Westword doing a little bit to let folks know about the scene here, it definitely wasn't enough so I took it upon myself to help get the word out.

My goal was to get the talented cats in the scene that were working their butts off to the forefront and get recognized. And also to provide a spot where artists could get honest feedback on their music from fans and their peers. Of course everything I've done here was for the love and I haven't made any money at all (even though CBS 4 owes me $20... where's my money fool!), which is why I don't have the time to update as often as I want to. Time is money, so I have to spend it wisely.

So in case you come to my site and it isnt updated, there are new sites out there trying to copy and bite my steez that you can visit... NAH, I'M JUST PLAYIN!!! Things are changing over at Westword. I will no longer have a weekly column there, but blogging several times a week about the local hip-hop scene.

Of course, I will scrutinize the music I get more harshly for the Westword Backbeat Blog and will only put up music that I feel is a good representation of the Colorado hip-hop scene.

The purpose of my blog here is kind of to create awareness of the scene and give an avenue for folks to put their music out there, no matter how wack it is, and get some good honest feedback on their work. Should they tweak their rhyme style? They depending too much on hip-hop trends from other locations instead of being original? Should they just put the mic down? That's what this blog is for. For fans and artists to give feedback. And I throw in some news here and there as well.

At Westword, imagine it like the Best of Colorado or the Music Showcase. Step your game up and keep sending me music, videos, and graf artists send me some flicks, yo! Also, check out my MySpace comments for the latest events going on locally. Oh yeah, and if you post something on my comments that starts playing music when people visit, it will get deleted.

Anyone looking for a PR campaign for their next project? And this for serious artists who are trying to get more coverage than this blog or Westword or some other local rag.

My colleague, Sheree Johnson, who works for New York-based PR company Highwater Group, is looking to promote more music projects. I've worked with her through mostly the video game industry, but the company is looking to broaden their horizons. They've worked with folks like Marc Ecko and John Woo on their video games and have access to editors at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Spin and Vibe magazine. They can pretty much guarantee you coverage. If you're serious about it, hit her up on email at Sheree@highwatergroup.com and tell her I sent you. She will basically talk to you about what you want and what they can offer you.

And no, I'm not getting anything from this. This is me trying to help my local scene do something bigger than Colorado. If you haven't heard by now, Cat Collins is leaving KS107.5. He's been the program director at the station for 10 years. Now granted, I've went after Cat a few times for his reluctance to add locals to regular rotation on the station. At the same time, he's allowed local music to be played on the station when previous PDs (and when is was KS104.3), hardly let any locals get any play (except for Pure Devocion, or course).

Plus, he did hire a true DJ in Chonz, allowing him to mix and scratch live on the radio, skipping needles and all. Before Chonz, everything was pre-mixed by DJs who didn't even live here. And in turn, Chonz gave opportunities to other locals DJs like Bedz and Psycho to get on the radio as well and build their following. So even though I go after Cat about local airplay, I do have to give him his props for at least showing the local scene some love.

As far as the next PD in line, I'm hearing rumors right now that it'll be someone from out of town. But I'm sure the bosses won't let the new PD shake-up what Cat built.

Anyway, here some music, and don't forget about the Scribble Jam Preliminary event at the Fox Theatre in Boulder tonight at 9pm. I'll see you there!
