NOT!For those thinking the new 1050cc Triumph Tiger has lost all its dualsport/offroad pretensions, I offer up this video made by the owner/administrator of TigerTriple.com (formerly TriumphTiger.com):

Clearly, the Tiger still has claws.

And if you thought you wouldn't be able to find aftermarket accessories to enhance its dualsporting abilities, think again. Here, already, are some rather stout looking crash bars. Alarmed by this fact, I started digging to find out what was going on. After a bit of research, I talked to Kelly Russell at kmrussell@fs.fed.us, District Ranger for the US Forest Service in Talihina, OK. According to her, Congress enacted a law that requires the US Forest Service to develop a Travel Management Plan for all National Forest Land. The travel management rule requires that all of the nation’s 155 national forests designate a system of roads and trails for all motorized vehicles including OHVs. Hence, this is not something optional for the US Forest Service, or something that is being thought up at the local level.

This ruling was brought about partially by irresponsible ORV users riding off-trail, cutting new trails without thought to the long term health of the forest, and damaging important natural resources. Responsible riders know that forest access requires working with the landowners (in this case the Federal Government), being responsible when they ride, taking care of the riding areas, and assisting with trail development and maintenance.

The Ouachita National Forest team expects that significant public input will be needed to develop this plan. To this end they have held a number of meetings in SE Oklahoma and western Arkansas. Turnout has been low, probably because of the remote locations and weekday meeting dates.

In talking to Kelly, it is clear they are VERY interested in hearing from ORV owners about how, where, and what type of riding is done in the Ouachita Forest. The US Forest Service wants to accomodate ORV users and work with ORV riders to build a responsible, reusable, well maintained system of trails in the Ouachita Forest.

How can you help? First and most important, contact Kelly Russell via email and explain to her what type of riding you like to do in SE Oklahoma, where you like to ride, what type of events, the places you like to visit, and any other details about riding in SE Oklahoma. Public comment officially closes June 29 so you need to get something out very soon (they may extend this comment period 30 days).

Second, you can fill out this questionaire and volunteer to help with trail management, development and to provide input as needed. You may not necessarily need to do a lot of on-site work, but you can do things like help manage the trail while riding, assisting the rangers when you come down with some type of trail project, etc.

Most importantly, get involved and make sure your voice is heard. Ride Oklahoma and Oklahoma Dual Sport will be maintaining contact and actively reporting and working with the US Forest Service and other local clubs, agencies and riders to help make sure the wonderful riding areas we have in SE Oklahoma remain open and accessible to ORV riders.

Important web sites and emails:

US Forest Service OHV Travel Management Rule
Ouachita Forest Site
Feedback form for Travel Management Plan (requires Acrobat Reader)
Kelly Russell - US Forest Service land manager for Ouachita Forest - kmrussell@fs.fed.us

James Pratthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15290263556000916177noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33400343.post-70053796579288815582007-06-18T21:58:00.001-06:002007-06-18T22:01:29.527-06:00Observed TrialsChris Johnson from the Medicine Park area sent this intersting video along with his comments.

"Here is an interesting and one of the better examples of the upper .005% of motorcycle trials skill I've seen. In your mind, they build overweight, underpowered street bikes that are modified to go off-road.

But all that is changing as BMW is making a concerted effort to move into the dirt bike world. Not only has their 100+ horsepower BMW HP2 been a giant killer at places like the Erzberg Rodeo in Austria, they are now in the development and testing phases of a single cylinder 450cc true off-road bike.

Click on any picture to see additional pics of the 2007 Erzberg Rodeo.

BMW's under development single cylinder 450cc dirt bike.

Earlier this month at the world-renown off-road event known as the Erberg Rodeo, BMW ridres Chris Pfeiffer, Simo Kirssi and Mickey Dymond put the BMW HP2 and their yet unreleased 450cc dirt bike through it's paces. Simo Kirssi on his HP2 placed first in the King's Class, besting KTM's David Knight on this race of twin cylinder bikes. While the still under development 450 had good success at earlier European off-road races, mechanical failure during the Hare Scramble race ended with a DNF. Still, riders on BMW's won both the King's Race and the Prologue, scoring two for three in this grueling test of man and machine.

So when are we going to see the BMW 450 dirt bike in the USA? Soon I hope. Will it be competitive, both on the track and in the showroom? Let's hope so. Competition is good very everyone and it is wonderful to see another manufacturer enter the off-road and dual sport market.

Get by BMW of Oklahoma City and check out some of the new BMW models coming soon.

James Pratthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15290263556000916177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33400343.post-3147252179398516842007-05-03T12:02:00.000-06:002007-05-03T12:18:16.858-06:00Dealer Prepped Dual Sport

As part of a growing motorcycle trend, you see more dealers customizing motorcycles to fit a specific customer's need. This includes custom choppers, lots of bling on cruizers, frame sliders on sports bikes, and now tricked-out dual sport bikes.

Recently I was invited by Performance Cycle to view a very nice custom Suzuki VStrom that they had tricked out for a customer in Tulsa. Traditionally I didn't think of a VStrom as being a true dual sport, since from the factory they are more oriented towards street riding. But once the people at Performace Cycle in Bethany, OK were done with this one, you can see that is is ready for a trip to Alaska or to the tip of South America!

Custom items from Touratech and Suzuki grace this bike. Hosted by some dual sporters out of Kansas, this trip has always been a blast in the past. This year promises to be a wet one, however. My wife Kay and I had planned to ride up on Thursday afternoon, but monsoon rains convinced Kay to stay home. I thought I would brave the elements and did get out and ride a couple of hours, but after running errands around OKC in the deluge, I decided my nice warm comfortable bed would be better than a good soaking. I also learned that my waterproof gloves and rain jacket were not so waterproof after all. The gloves lasted two miles, while the jacket was a bit better, lasting a couple of hours before starting to feel damp. My BMW pants and boots worked flawlessly as in the past, keeping the wet out. I plan to try again tomorrow with a different jacket and gloves.

James Pratthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15290263556000916177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33400343.post-5209635816445735042007-03-04T07:37:00.000-06:002007-03-04T07:41:14.838-06:00Dual Sport sales show largest increaseI stopped by Performance Cycles in OKC this past week and chatted with Richard Meadors, the general manager. He pointed me to an article from the Motorcycle Industry Council, a manufacturer's trade group, that says dual sport motorcycle sales had the largest increase of all segments in 2006, a whopping 23% growth increase from 2005! Compare this to total motorcycle sales which were up 3.7%. The actual number of dual sport motorcycles sold is small in comparison to other models, but it looks like other people are discovering what we already know - dual sport rocks!

James Pratthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15290263556000916177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33400343.post-27453005098779109622007-02-28T06:55:00.000-06:002007-02-28T13:42:20.199-06:00Moto Guzzi Reveals New Adventure Tourer

Sales in "Adventure Touring" motorcycles are inspiring manufacturers to not only redesign models such as the KLR and Triumph Tiger, but also to develop entirely new beauties to compete for an ever-growing market share. Seems like we are living in the proverbial golden age for dualsport motorcycling: recent years have witnessed the drool-inducing release of rough-and-ready bikes like BMW's HP2 and Buell's Ulysses; more and more offroad motorcycles are spinning off street-legal versions such as KTM's EXC models and Husky's TEs; rumors have a new F800GS just around the corner; and it looks as if some of those ultra sexy new supermotards just need knobbies to make them the ultimate pavement-to-trail machines. What a great time to be on two wheels!

Enter Moto Guzzi's latest salvo into the fray -- the Stelvio. Granted, the exhaust looks like a 200 pound trolling lure for a sperm whale, but the rest of the bike sure looks to be aimed at taking a bite out of BMW and KTM sales. Spoked wheels, a very large luggage rack, GPS, single-sided swingarm, upside-down forks, adjustable windshield, a twin cyclinder power plant expected to be available in 850 and 1200 cc options, and NO CHAIN.

I can't wait to see what comes next!

Brian A. I've lost count of how many tubes I've pinched with my tire irons, requiring that I tear everything down again and patch what was, just a moment ago, a perfectly good tube. Of course, we need those spoked wheels for our dualsport bikes, because cast wheels that don't require tubes just wouldn't stand up to the beating that we give them offroad. Perhaps you've seen the spoked wheels that BMW puts on its big GS bikes: the spokes terminate at the very outer edge of the rim where they don't invade the air pocket between the wheel and tire, allowing the GS to run tubeless tires. Very cleaver, but BMW's wheels are very expensive.

Finally, a company has come up with a rather simple solution, allowing tubeless tires to be run on spoked wheels. The spokes are threaded into the rim and terminate with a sealing gasket to prevent air from escaping. These new wheels are already being tested in AMA Supercross. Assuming they preform well in Supercross, it's just a matter of time before the major manufacturers pick up on it and start marketing their bikes with tubeless tires. Hallelujah!

For more in depth information, read this article at Motorcycle Daily.

Brian A. Offroad riding is all about finding and utilizing traction. When your rear tire is slipping and sliding, you're generally not making much in the way of forward progress ... but what if the front tire was pulling you through those slippery stretches? What if it wasn't just planted in the corners, but was actually digging in and motoring you through? What great feats of riding could we mere mortals accomplish then, eh?

Others have tried to create 2WD dirtbikes, but for the first time, this company, Christini, looks to be making the technology practical and -- more importantly -- affordable.

Edited (2-28-07) to add: The Christini All-Wheel Drive motorcycle has competed favorably in a number of enduro and GNCC events, including the Red Bull Last Man Standing melee in Bulcher, TX where it was one of less than a dozen to even finish. Starting near Guthrie, we followed the backroads and river to downtown OKC, then turned north through Bricktown and home. This trip we were very careful to stay completely legal - no riding through closed areas, no going down one way streets, staying off railroad tracks. That didn't keep us out of back alleyways, empty parking lots, empty construction zones, or other fun dual sport riding areas.

What it did do is get the OKC PD on our tail! Bill Dragoo has a fun story of our ride. Truth be told, we didn't do a thing wrong. The police have been trying to nab some "taggers" or people who are spraypainting public property in Bricktown, and they thought we were "it". I think the end result was one helicopter about about 15 patrol officers chasing after us. The officers said they were chasing us, but we just didn't know it! Never heard a siren, never saw anything but the helicopter at the end, they just couldn't keep up with us in their patrol cruisers. We never broke the speed limit and actually were riding pretty tame, but our dual sport bikes could go places they couldn't go.

In the end my officer apologized for bothering us and told us to have a good time!

Check out Bill Dragoo's story of our adventure in downtown OKC.

James Pratthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15290263556000916177noreply@blogger.com0
