Simply, the dorm connections to the databases weren't working and this solution fixed that. Besides, not all dorm residents are HIU students so this really meets the spirit of our agreements better.

These subscription databases are licensed to Hope International University with the understanding that we will limit their use to our current students, staff, and faculty. Therefore, we must either require users to access them from our campus (assuming we don't let just everyone use our computers) or by asking for a login from remote users.

If you have any problems logging in, please contact the library for help.

Darling Library
(714) 879-3901, ext. 1234
darlinglibrary@hiu.edu
Hugh and Hazel Darling Library

The deep web. These images won't show up in search engines' image searches or on Flickr (save one exception), but instead can only be accessed via the links below.

The images are a part of online collections created by institutions in the U.S. Some of the images may be a part of the public domain, but many will require permission or accreditation in order to use. So, no, these aren't necessarily images you can use in your next blog post, but that doesn't mean they're not useful. Instead, if given permission, these images could be used in the classroom, in private study, or even included in a media project or publication.

Dr. John Jaeger
Doctoral Research and
Reference Librarian
Dallas Baptist University
Hugh and Hazel Darling Library

Well, it's a library ... thing. More precisely, LibraryThing is an online service to help you catalog your books. It's easy and intuitive to use, and it can be accessed anywhere you can connect to the Internet. It can even be accessed using your mobile phone for those moments when you are standing in a bookstore wondering if you already own that book or if you should buy it.

Adding book titles to your catalog can be done by entering an author, title, or ISBN and then choosing the book that matches yours. Book cover images are also provided when available. Book data and cover images are obtained from Amazon.com, Library of Congress, and over 680 other libraries worldwide. For those books in your library that are very old or unique, you can pull up a form and create your own entry. Book cover images for these books can be scanned and added to your record. Once you've created a unique record, it can then be used by others who might want to add that same book to their own catalog.

LibraryThing is also a social network and connects you with other book lovers worldwide. You can share alternate book cover images; read reviews written by other LibraryThingers; write and add your own reviews and book ratings; join or create chat groups; view and track the libraries of others who give permission; and much more. There is a whole lot of socializing going on at LibraryThing! If you'd rather not socialize, you can designate your LibraryThing catalog as private. Your LibraryThing experience can be as public or private as YOU choose.

For those of you who maintain a blog, LibraryThing provides a widget that randomly displays books from your entire LibraryThing catalog or just a part of it that you designate, such as books that you are currently reading. This is a handy tool for making your LibraryThing catalog even more social.

A new feature is LibraryThing Local. LibraryThing Local is a gateway to your local libraries and book festivals where you can find book readings, discussions, and author signings. If you have a favorite library or bookstore that is not already entered into LibraryThing Local, you can add it yourself.

Would you like to get free books to review? You can do this by participating in LibraryThing's Early Reviewer Program. Each month a list of books is posted that you can then request. Your only obligation is to read the books sent to you and post a review to LibraryThing.

You may very well be asking, "What does it cost to join LibraryThing?" Good question! You can enter up to 200 book titles for free. You can enter as many titles as you like by paying either $10.00 per year or by purchasing a $25.00 lifetime membership. LibraryThing appears to be a pretty stable service that looks like it will be around for a long while yet, so the $25.00 lifetime membership is a pretty good deal.

Check out the LibraryThing Blog for even more information and updates.
Hugh and Hazel Darling Library

The DCHS is the primary archives, library, museum, and collective memory for congregations of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) throughout the world serving the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, and a cappella Churches of Christ. One of the new features is a Tools for Ministry section where you'll find the "Streamers" online curriculum for classes in congregations that are part of the Stone-Campbell Christian tradition. It's worth a look see!

For more information about the history and heritage of Hope International University, see our online archives at http://library.hiu.edu/archives/archives.htm.
Hugh and Hazel Darling Library

There are many other search engines that operate differently and may be a better fit for the kind of searching you need to do. Clusty (http://clusty.com/) has a google-like simple interface and returns results lists similar to Google, but it includes "clustering" of related terms on the left side that you can click on to "drill-down" to a more specific subtopic. This is really great for those times when you're not sure what terms to use to find the information you want.

I did a search on "church planting" and from my cluster list, selected the 15 "Church Planting Resources" that were more to the heart of what I was looking for.

You can also limit your results by sources of Clusty's results (i.e., all the Wikipedia articles on the topic). And you can easily limit by the type of site such as .edu if you want something from an educational institution or .gov for government web sites. You can even limit to news, jobs, and blogs on the topic.

When searching images, you can sort by size, file type, URL, and more. You can search for news on a topic and sort the results by source and section (i.e., sports, technology, entertainment).

And I like the logo.
Hugh and Hazel Darling Library

The book is published by The Johns Hopkins University Press.*

The NetLibrary advertisement describes the book as follows:

Now in its second edition, this bestselling textbook may be the single most influential study of the historical relationship between science and technology ever published. Tracing this relationship from the dawn of civilization through the twentieth century, James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn argue that technology as "applied science" emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies.

The new edition reorganizes its treatment of Greek science and significantly expands its coverage of industrial civilization and contemporary science and technology with new and revised chapters devoted to applied science, the sociology and economics of science, globalization, and the technological systems that underpin everyday life.

To access this book:

Go to http://library.hiu.edu/

Click Research Databases

Scroll down the screen and click NetLibrary

Login using your Library login
NOTE: Your Library login is your Hope ID and your Library password (the first 3 letters of your first name and the first 3 letters of your last name)

You should now be in the NetLibrary service

Click the featured book that appears on the right side of the screen

Enjoy reading!

You must be a current student, faculty, or staff at Hope International University to access this book via the NetLibrary service.

Please contact a Librarian at library_ref-help@hiu.edu if you have questions about the NetLibrary service.

*The currently featured NetLibrary eBook is not a recommendation or endorsement by Hope International University.
