News Flash

In March 2009, Fountain Art Gallery formed the Fountain Art Gallery Plein air Artists. The first day there were two locations where members were painting en plein air. One plein air paint out was held at the Memphis Botanic Garden amid beautiful blooming cherry trees, tulips and pansies. The other was at Shelby Farms which is always a wonderful location for painting. The weather was gorgeous and the fellowship and painting was a lot of fun! Members who came out to paint or draw were Marie Babb, Lisa Balton, Priscilla Cunningham, Anne Enoch, Teresa Robison and Mike Taylor.

Other locations where Fountain Art Gallery Plein Air Artists painted included the Nature Walk along Wolfe River in Germantown, Beaver Lake and Patriot Lakes at Shelby Farms. Two of our artists have already been seen on Channel 3 News. Priscilla Cunningham and Teresa Robison were painting at one of the entrances to the Nature Walk at the Wolfe River in Germantown when Channel 3 News showed up to film a story on the new cameras protecting the parking areas. Look for future paint outs all over Memphis!

There are exciting things happening at the gallery this month. We have rearranged the second floor rooms, adding more display walls. We are now able to provide each of our artists with a more cohesive hanging space and provide you, our loyal patrons, with a more visually appealing display area. Our paintings look better and are easier to see. Come in and see our new "look".

Here is some information on our featured artists to peak your interest:

One of the gallery's most prolific painters, Sandy Scruggs has been with Fountain Gallery for 14 years. Sandy has been painting since 1979 and works exclusively in oil.

Sandy feels the painting process itself is inspiring. To be able to create a three dimensional image on a two dimensional surface is very exciting for her. Sandy teaches art twice a week and loves being able to share her interest in art with her students. She enjoys sharing her students' enthusiasm. Being part of their creative process and progress is a very rewarding experience.

Joyce Petrina has been a member of the gallery for just over two years. She is both a sculptor and a painter and is mostly self-taught.

Originally from the Bahamas, and having lived overseas for many years, she combines her travel experience, her interest in different cultures, political commentary and exploration of the metaphysical in all of her work.

She often chooses to paint well-known or local musicians she feels a connection with like Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, Rice Drewry, Valerie June and Marilyn Monroe.

Her most recent works are an exploration of "what if". This has led her into abstraction which she finds the most expressive means of exploring subtle emotions and points of view that are often controversial while at the same time freeing her to answer that "what if" question.

She is currently cataloguing her portfolio for a gallery in the Bahamas and will be giving a talk on Lost Wax Bronze Casting at the Brooks Museum on November 7th, 2008.

Joyce occasionally accepts commissions to cast busts in bronze or to paint portraits in acrylic.

COME TO OUR NEXT OPENING ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 1ST FROM 6:00 TO 8:00 PM

Featured artists will be Marie Babb, Priscilla Cunningham, Teresa Robison and Gerald Stephan

Here is a little bit about each one to whet your appetit!

Marie Babb has been painting for most of her life and has been with the Fountain Gallery a total of 14 years, longer than most of our members. Marie loves to see the beauty in nature and then incorporate the colors and images into her work. She feels that this is her best work; the vision that just flows out of her and onto the canvas. Marie has just designed and organized a new studio and can now paint whenever her muse moves her, sometimes late into the night. Marie's newest pieces are large abstracts and are the perfect focal point of any room.

Priscilla Cunningham has been a member of the gallery since 2002, but has been painting professionally since 1996. She has recently rented a large studio space at Marshall Arts in downtown Memphis, consolidating her home and Cooper Young studios. She is energized by the presence of other artists in this wonderful warehouse space. Priscilla loves painting landscapes and natural subjects in her impressionist style. She paints mostly from photographs taken while traveling to fabulous European locations. Her pieces are large, (she is currently working on a 48" x 72" canvas) energetic, and colorful, and representative of Priscilla's optimistic personality.

Teresa Robison has been painting for her entire life and loving every minute of it. She has been a Fountain Gallery artist since 2004. Teresa is excited about the new direction her pieces are taking. A gifted painter of landscape and downtown Memphis scenes, she is exploring abstraction with her acrylics. She is working with texture, color and design and having a fabulous time creating new work. Teresa credits her membership in Fountain with "raising the bar" on her work. Since joining the artists's co-op she has tried to paint daily. The results are worth all of your hard work, Teresa!

Gerald Stephan is one of our gallery's newest members, having been with the Fountain Gallery for two and one-half years, and is the first man to join our group. Although he has had no formal training and had never thought about "doing" art, Gerald answered his inner voice and just got started. Gerald has been painting daily in oil for almost seven years, mastering this one medium in order to focus his energies on his subject matter. Gerald has a fascination with the human figure and the emotional connections between the subjects in his pieces. He enjoys rendering subjects that will give his work a timeless and classic look. Most recently, Gerald has been painting the sky, illustrating various atmospheric conditions. He includes a limited landscape to "anchor" the piece and to give weight and a viewer's reference to an otherwise abstract painting.

WELCOME to Marty Parker, our newest Fountain Art Gallery member. Marty's art is extremely varied in medium as well as subject because "I enjoy the challenge of exploring new ideas and concepts in different media". Marty loves sharing her views through her paintings and welcomes viewers to "enter my world" when they see her paintings.

Marty is a member of the Memphis/Germantown Art League where she is a Platinum Star Artist. She is also a member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society, the Jackson Art Association and the Landscape Artist International Group.

Marty recently showed her work in Nashville, the Memphis Germantown Art League National Show and the Southern expressions Fine Art Show in Hardeman County where she won the Purchase Award from First South Bank for her painting "Green Pastures" which also received an award for Best Landscape.

Marty was also recently honored with a one person show at the West Tennessee Regional Art Center. Her art pieces can be seen in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

June 26, 2008 More great news about Fountain Art Gallery...

Our new space facing Poplar Avenue in the Chickasaw Oaks Village Mall continues to beautifully showcase great pieces from our members. The soaring ceilings and wonderful lighting and larger spaces for each artist enhances the public's ability to see our art. The gallery is a multi-member artist's cooperative and all of us are from the mid-south, with the majority from the Memphis area. We offer a variety of painting styles, from abstract to representational and media, pastels, oils and acrylics. We also have a potter whose speciality is Raku and three dimensional ceramic wall hangings for garden or interior. Our member artists staff the gallery and can discuss any of the artists and their media and advise you on the right choice for your home or office.

We are very excited about our newest idea. Our high ceilings and architectural layout offer the opportunity for our artists to hang very large pieces. Currently these pieces are framed or gallery wrapped acrylics and oils by Lisa Balton, Priscilla Cunningham, Chris Dozier, Teresa Robison, and Holly Wolfe. Other artists will be featured in the future. Sizes range upwards from 48" x 48" to 48" x 72".

Just a reminder that Fountain Art Gallery allows pieces to be taken home on approval.

We also offer a "hang-away" program which allows you to pay for your favorite piece of art over a three month time period.

Our featured artists for the months of June and July are Lisa Balton, Peggy Felsenthal, Flo Hayes, and Holly Wolfe.

Our next opening will be on Friday evening, August 1st from 6 -8 pm. Priscilla Cunningham, Marie Babb, Gerald Stephan and Teresa Robison will be our featured artists. Please join us for drinks and good eats and GREAT ART.

Fountain Art Gallery has moved within Chickasaw Oaks Village. We are now located in Suite 1, which is next to the South mall entrance. Our new space is larger and arranged a little differently from our old space. We have arranged it so that the downstairs serves as a showroom for all of our artists with each hanging 2-3 paintings and the upstairs houses our larger collection. Our Pottery Artist uses only the downstair area to show her beautiful pottery and wall hangings. We also show jewelry and sculpture made by two of our artists who also show paintings.

Our "Featured Artists" for February and March are Emaline Holleman, Joyce Petrina, Mike Taylor, and Judy Vandergrift. We are having a reception at the gallery Friday, February 1 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. We invite everyone who would like to see our new space and enjoy visiting with our artists to come.
