"Portman is the eye in the hurricane of Brothers, a love-triangle family drama set against - and ignited by - the war in Afghanistan. Director Jim Sheridan's recasting of the 2004 Danish film Brodre for a U.S. context, it bristles with American trauma. Anger and guilt sizzle in every direction - brother-brother, soldier-soldier, father-son and, of course, wife-husband. As Grace Cahill, Portman begins falling for Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), the younger brother of her Marine husband, Sam (Tobey Maguire), who goes missing in Afghanistan but returns from the dead.

Inescapably, Afghanistan is the homewrecker here, but Portman resists casting Brothers as an anti-war - or even war - film.

``I don't think so. And I don't think it really has a political message. It's much more of a family film - and in a way your nation is your family, so it could lead to larger things if you wanted to take it there. But it's not overt.''``(The war) is really interesting, because we are so shielded from it. We've been in this war like, approaching 10 years, and it's so abstract and distant from many of us, but for the people who are engaged, it's so all-consuming in their lives. For all of Maguire's visceral and disturbing Afghanistan scenes, the terrifying realities of bedroom and kitchen are the heart of the film. As Sheridan will say later in the day in his Dublin accent, ``all of my films are about puttin' the family back together.'' With a boozy, bitter military father (Sam Shepard) who torments Tommy, who himself begins to usurp the role of unravelling scion Sam, this family needs some puttin'.

"Yeah, it was uncomfortable',' Portman says, "and it was largely improvised and figured out on the day. That's Jim's mastery, that he can create that in the room.''The tension ratchets up as conversation falls silent, and the camera switches between dad Sam's banked rage and the balloon his daughter is rubbing. ``That was really great, because that balloon was almost like a soundtrack, it almost served as foreshadowing music in a tense dramatic scene, like the Jaws dant-dant dant-dant!''Sheridan will also say: ``There were a few girls interested in the role, but I thought Natalie was the best.''Which is interesting. Grace is an orphaned blue-collar military housewife who chose the safety of a rigidly disciplined husband despite the fault-lines running through him and his family. By the time Maguire goes Travis Bickle in his kitchen, we've realized these characters must be torn apart to be reassembled.And the non-damage extends to the family unit. In an era when Hollywood moms, dads and kids vie for best celeb perp-walk, Portman hasn't the faintest whiff of scandal or ugliness in her backstory. She remains very close to her parents. She's no Grace Cahill.``There's actually a line Sam Shepard says in the film', Portman says: `Every family has its own problems.' And everyone has those moments, and you see glimpses of everything, even when (your family's) healthy, you have the explosions and arguments and tensions. Also, you can glean so much from people you talk to, whether they're friends or people you talk to for research.''

And after all, ``obviously most people don't experience in life what they experience in a film - I mean, you play a serial killer I've never understood how a method actor would do that (laughs)''.

Point taken. ``As actors, imagining other people's lives is our job''. So she researched the role by speaking to, she says: ``wives of marines who were sent abroad. They were always saying that the home is your sort of front, and you have to make sure everything is going smoothly. And when your husband calls you (from the war), no matter how much the kids are acting up, no matter what - bill paying or problems at work - `Everything's fine'.

``You have to tell your husband everything's fine. Because in order to go do their job, they have to know that you're doing yours. Because you're just going to upset them and make them feel helpless. Jake Gyllenhaal is an even tempered, sporty guy. His method performance as Donnie Darko was enough to curdle our blood and it foreshadowed a brilliance we would fortunately rediscover in Brokeback Mountain and Zodiac.2. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception)
Drawn instinctively by a creativity streak, Joseph Gordon-Levitt captures our attention without imposing on our way, he jumps very high scenic turnpikes and shows the scars down the road.3. Emile Hirsch (Hamlet)

"(500) Days of Summer" premiered there, and that was the first time everybody saw it. And a short film I made called "Sparks" played at Sundance, and then Barack Obama became president, which was one of the more cathartic, emotionally reinforcing, positive experiences I've really ever had. It feels like a special year.Deschanel: It's a very special year. It's the end of the aughts, which is sad.

Gordon-Levitt: The end of the aughts! Thank you, I've been looking for the name of this decade, and I haven't known what it was.MTV: So, for you especially, Zooey, the aughts were essentially the decade when you came of age as an actress, when you essentially got started. Is it bittersweet to see your first decade as an actress come to an end?
Deschanel: It's exciting. I have to say, Sundance 2001, Joe and I had to be there with "Manic". I've been so lucky to work with Joe twice. Book-ending the aughts. And hopefully, it will be more frequent.

Gordon-Levitt: Into the teens. And the '20s.

Deschanel: And the '20s and the '30s and '40s and the '50s. And we'll live to a million by that point, because they'll have all kinds of drugs to keep us alive.

Gordon-Levitt: Of course, because we'll be cyborgs.MTV: What did you two make of each other — be honest — because you're getting along now, but when you first met each other, was there something there? Did you not know what to make of this guy or vice versa?

Deschanel: I just thought he was so cool. He was so cool and such a great actor. So intense. Gordon-Levitt: Are you a fan of Christopher Nolan, who wrote and directed "The Dark Knight" among other things? This is what happened. Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite artists, and he's a true dignified filmmaker with all the integrity of an indie filmmaker. He started with indie films like "Memento." And then he directed one of the biggest hits of all time. Now he can say, "I'm going to do whatever I want to do and you, Warner Brothers, are going to let me do it." The brand new poster for Eclipse (above) hints at a darker tone with its brooding storm clouds. With 30 Days of Night director David Slade at the helm, it’s unsurprising. “Every movie is different because we work with a different director on each one, which I love,” Taylor Lautner tells RT. “David Slade is perfect for the third film because it’s darker. Eclipse was my favourite book.”Ashley Greene, who plays vampire Alice, tells RT that Slade isn’t just a prince of darkness. “David is actually hysterical,” she laughs, “He has such a dry sense of humour that sometimes you don’t know if he’s kidding or not. Eclipse will be amazing because he has made it far edgier and more dramatic. "I think that watching Tobey in the movie is the most extraordinary piece of it," Gyllenhaal admitted. "I have been blessed to watch actors who people didn't feel could perform a certain thing or were a sort of way, and I've been honored to watch that. It's always nice to see when people, like journalists, have never thought of someone one way can see them in another way. I watched Tobey go from the first part of the movie, then we had a Christmas break in between and when he came back, he was another person from who he was in the first couple weeks we started shooting. That was an extraordinary transformation, not only to watch as an actor, but now watching the movie as an audience member, I now feel that way, too." Portman talked about the research she did for the role: "I spoke to some Marine wives and talked to them about their experiences and how their kids reacted when their father was away and the kinds of things husbands would do before they left and what it was like when they came back and how everything changed. I think the most interesting thing was that they viewed it as the home being their own front, that they had to really keep everything under control at home so their husbands could do their job. Even if there was something going on (like) the kids were acting up or it was hard to pay the bills, you never ever tell your husband, because they need to focus on their job and there's nothing they can do because they're away. They're tough because they're soldiers in their own right."And Jake: "I can say that in researching the character that I played, Jim and I went to a lot of different jails and juvenile halls in L.A. county and I met these kids in this writing program and they were extraordinary kids. One of them was this incredible storyteller that Jim ended up putting in the movie as one of the guys in the helicopter with Tobey."Gyllenhaal added his own two cents on the matter. "It's funny that people are asking whether this is some kind of war movie, and I've definitely been involved in movies that people have said that to me in press conferences over and over, and as a result of trying to sell the movie, there's an inclination to not talk about that. You're kind of backed into a corner, but I don't actually think anybody is trying to pretend like we're in some corner. We're not in a corner. The movie is a journey and how they're selling the movie is fascinating because the most extraordinary part of the movie is not given away at all in any of these ads or how they're selling it. It's the journey that Tobey's character makes to get back home. It is intertwined with a lot of other complications but it's mostly about what this man does to get back to the people that he loves and his life." Finally, Maguire mused on why stories about soldiers like the one he plays need to be told. "People don't like to talk about that stuff so much. I mean, people will, but these folks go over there and suffer these traumas and feel alone. They don't feel like people can relate. I'm generalizing obviously. Some people can talk about it, some people do get help, but a lot of folks go over and feel like their worldview has changed. They can't relate to us, the civilians, and it's very challenging for them. There's a lot of shame and embarrassment and they try to take it on themselves and they're suffering. They're dealing with some really complicated psychological problems. In this sit-down with the adapter of the entire "Twilight" series, Melissa pinpoints four key details that she tweaked, augmented or deleted entirely, transforming Stephenie Meyer's novel into the biggest film of 2009. From Harry Clearwater's reimagined death to the lack of Laurent, read on for Rosenberg's official take on the tweaks that made "New Moon" shine: Hope Bella Got a Gift Receipt ... In one narrative device Melissa is particularly proud of, Jacob gives Bella a Quileute trinket meant to capture bad dreams — "One of my favorite things is the dream-catcher that Jacob gives Bella", the screenwriter said. "It's the first time that we see Jacob, and I wanted to establish his and Bella's relationship, his sort-of crush. [The gift establishes] her affection for him and Edward's jealousy of him. So I had the idea that he brought her a little birthday gift and came up with the dream-catcher, which would be true to his culture but also to the theme of the movie; there's a lot of dreams in this movie. That, I thought, played well. In Meyer's novel, the Volturi scenes are a moody medley of tension, fear and careful wordplay. In the movie, however, Felix lays the smack-down on Edward as he tries to protect Bella. Like many scenes, Rosenberg said she needed to up the visuals to take the place of lost narrative nuances. "In the book, at the very end, the final climatic scene is Edward and Bella and Alice going to the Volturi and the potential that they might not walk out of there", she said. "It is very fraught with tension, but the tension is expressed through dialogue, and I wanted to heighten that. I wanted to have that conflict be external. So I pushed it into an all-out-battle, and Chris [Weitz] and the stunt people, along with ['X-Men' star] Daniel Cudmore who plays Felix, did this great action sequence at the end that's just really fantastic." Cause of Death Unclear ... Although he's a relatively minor character, the death of Quileute elder Harry Clearwater sets off a pivotal chain of events in the "Twilight" world. In Meyer's "New Moon" novel, Charlie Swan's friend dies of a heart attack. In the movie, the sight of vixen vampire Victoria kills him. So why the switch? "Well, in the book, Harry Clearwater's heart attack is mentioned as something that happens offscreen, although it plays a crucial part of the structure of the books. It's what gets Edward going to the Volturi, after he calls Charlie and then Jacob answers and says, 'Charlie's at a funeral', " she explained. "That launches the entire third act of the movie. ... That just gave me the idea 'Stephenie doesn't specify what causes the heart attack,' so I decided that it could be caused by something startling him. It could be caused by fear. That was a way to keep Victoria alive. It was a way to keep Charlie and the danger of the hunt alive, and that's where we get a really great action sequence with Victoria that blends together important parts of the movie and important parts of the book moving forward. So I particularly like that." The Love of Laurent Sadly, fan fave Edi Gathegi doesn't get much screen time in "New Moon" and dies quite quickly. Rosenberg told us that if she had one regret, it's that she would've liked to delve deeper into the nomad's motivations. "Yes, we had to pull out some of the backstory, because it really just came down to conversation. Laurent was in Alaska, trying to be a vegetarian briefly, and all of his relationship with the Denali clan," she revealed.
