He began his life as a chimney sweep. Because of his slim build and and lack of funds for the necessary equipment, he used his body alone as the cleaning implement. After a debilitating bout of “chimney sweep trots” (a bowel disorder), his livelihood was no more. Finding himself broke, he sold himself to a Frenchman of noble heritage. At this chateau he was taught the art of tadpole wrangling. A vital step in the raising of frogs. The frogs were de-legged to feed the never ending appetite of the French race for said legs. Leaving France he made his way to America aboard a tramp steamer. He paid his way by making artificial limbs from spare engine parts for the less fortunate of the crew. Dropped off in Philadelphia with no money or prospects, he spent nights sneaking into the zoo to sleep in the aardvark den. Fortune finally smiled upon him when rummaging through the zoo’s lost and found, he came upon a 35 mm camera. Desperate to learn how to use it, he found a local photographer willing to teach him. In exchange for this education though, he was forced to pose in compromising positions with stuffed animals and poorly constructed Swedish furniture.

After mastering the art of photography, he became rich and famous, and married a princess. They inspire architects and artists, stimulate activists and residents, and broaden the vision of the public and decision-makers.

This workshop provides a space of expression for practicioners in architecture, planning, design, art, media, creative writing and other creative fields. It is based on the idea that the best way to make genuine breakthroughs in the way we understand, experience and create our cities is to stimulate collective imagination, by bringing together people from all over the world and all ways of life. The workshop provides a space to produce new images, narratives and insights about cities and urban life, using online tools, digital technology, personal experiences and professional skills.
The first URBZ MASHUP will take place in Tokyo, hosted by Temple University Japan, in the first week of July 2009. The second one will be held at Istanbul Technical University in the first week of August, followed by Mumbai in November. Other workshops are planned in Rio, New York and Amsterdam in 2010. Each workshop will remix and mashup the material produced in other cities.
The dates are as follows:

Tokyo: July 1-5, 2009

Istanbul: August 2-9, 2009

Mumbai: Nov. 22-29, 2009

Rio: February 7-13, 2010

New York: April, 2010

Amsterdam: June, 2010

David Brucehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06514581872141178962davidbruce@davidbrucestudios.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3310663421223864378.post-24271249138362428002009-07-02T12:16:00.003-04:002009-07-02T12:24:58.435-04:003 Headed: Adventures in the land of smoke and mirrors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rika Hawes, Kim Harty, and Charlotte Potter
26 June 2009
Contact: Nike Desis
914.806.4889 / nike@thefluxspace.org

Exhibition Dates: June 26, 2009, – July 26, 2009 215.740.0819 / rikahawes@gmail.com

Opening Reception: June 26, 2009, 6 – 10 pm

Gallery Hours: Saturdays 12 – 4 pm or by appointment

FLUXspace is pleased to present Three Headed, a collaboration between Kim Harty, Rika Hawes, and Charlotte Potter. Their show, "Adventures in the Land of Smoke and Mirrors," opens June 27th from 6-10PM.

The event is an experimental journey that explores the subversive nature of spectacle, pleasure and entertainment. Modeled after the structure of the carnival, it evokes such canons as the sideshow, burlesque theatre, and the circus.

"Adventures in the Land of Smoke and Mirrors," also identifies with the Situationalist’s goal of setting up temporary environments towards the fulfillment of primitive human desires. Three Headed uses different optical, mechanical, and technological phenomena to inspire a viewer’s pleasure. She is very excited to bring her screen printing to Philadelphia, another print passionate city.
The purple one is called Prehistoric Route Go, the orange one is ANWR Walk, the green one is Hum Drill Drum, and the blue one is Cycle One Way.

thanks Leslie for adding some life to this blog! if anyone else is interested in having their work up please email me!

erin m rileyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11475713288650742461noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3310663421223864378.post-70024769119172346352009-06-14T10:07:00.002-04:002009-06-14T10:07:25.563-04:00

erin m rileyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11475713288650742461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3310663421223864378.post-86225808530707034952009-06-12T17:07:00.001-04:002009-06-12T17:10:09.645-04:00

Webposium for Teaching Artists

Friday, June 19, 2009, 10:00-11:30AM (PST) 1:00-2:30PM (EST)

Join us online for a discussion about the evolving issues in the Teaching Artist
profession. An opening reception will take place at the Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street, Philadelphia on Friday, June 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The marriage between art and culture has never been more prominent than it is today. Examples abound: Damien Hirst’s paintings as the backdrop of Jay-Z’s music videos; Takashi Murakami’s designs on Louis Vuitton’s accessories and Kanye West’s album cover; graffiti art on Converse sneakers, Sprint advertisements, and energy drinks; Shepard Fairey’s iconic “HOPE” portrait of President Obama. These collaborations reflect an unprecedented merging and morphing of artistic genres and culture—high art with street art, underground with pop, fine art with street culture—that is breaking down social barriers and dated paradigms and clearing space for new ideas and aesthetics.

Hailing from metropolitan hubs throughout the country—Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington D.C.—these artists will share exciting work in a variety of mediums and styles that demonstrate a nationwide convergence toward a fresh contemporary sensibility with an urban edge: Pose II, Joshua Maze, Dave Cramske, Isaac Lin, Rodney Camarce, Jesse Olanday, Sun You, Figments by Ciriaco, Anjni Raol, Shin Ae Tassia, Chanika Svetla, Bret Syfert, Junghwa O’Connell, Miss Tina Wong, Teel MUL, and Dan “R5” Barojas.

Urban Convergence is curated by Jeff Cylkowski, a Korean American adoptee and Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary painter, muralist, and hip-hop artist. Before receiving a formal art education from the Pratt Institute, he spent years immersed in urban subcultures. The spirit of that experience continues to inform his work today. In summer 2009, he will be Artist-in-Residence at the Asian Arts Initiative. His residency will include a six-week series of painting and mural-making workshops with local youth in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, beginning July 6 and culminating with an exhibition of new work on August 14, 2009.

Please contact Asian Arts Initiative for more information about Urban Convergence or Jeff Cylkowski’s residency: (215) 557-0455 or Toni@asianartsinitiative.org

Major support for this project with Jeff Cylkowski has been provided by Artists and Communities, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible by major funding from The Heinz Endowments, the William Penn Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

The Asian Arts Initiative is a community-based arts center in Philadelphia that engages artists and everyday people to create art that explores the diverse experiences of Asian Americans, addresses our social context, and imagines and effects positive community change. We host a range of activities including an annual season of performances,, our gallery and exhibition series, and our Youth Arts Workshop and other education programs. Recently relocated due to the expansion of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Asian Arts Initiative is now in a new home at 1219 Vine Street where we are contributing to the revitalization of Vine Street and Chinatown North. But what of those who remain? For the months of June and July, Projects Gallery presents “Summer in the City”, a group show resulting from an open call to artists from the greater Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region. The resulting artists run the gamut from current students to established, mid-career artists.

Frequently galleries close or reduce their operating hours under the assumption that the sticky days and hot nights leave no audience for art. Projects Gallery believes that, for the peoples that remain, the thirst for expression is not diminished by the change of season. The work in this exhibition is a template of patient visual critique of the experience rather than simple jubilation. “Summer in the City” celebrates these die-hard urbanites and is reflective of their myriad experience.

Artists include Jennifer Baker, Henry Berkowitz, Aubrie Costello, Linda Dubin Garfield, Conor Fields,Ashley Flynn, Adam Lovitz, Daniel Petraitis, Bobby Rosenstock, Martha Savery, Allen Spencer and Deborah Imler, Fay Stanford, Jayne Surrena, Mat Tomezsko, Andrew Wapinski, Tamsen Wojtanowski and others.

With a broadly interpretive topic and locale constraint, a curious sub-theme emerged. Many of the works seem to observe the destructive nature of humanity on their environment with an air of detachment. In some works, a nearly anthropological or documentarian voice is expressed. A sense of urban decay extends from the abstract to the figurative, from literal crumbling buildings and abandoned lots to the reflexive decay of those who inhabit these settings. Many of these works hint at questioning the role of the urbanite in their treatment of their space, their peers and their community. This undercurrent energizes the collective voice of city dwellers, strengthening a conversation beyond the expected summery escapism.

Emerging from their wintry cocoon, Philadelphians take to the streets and stoops, bikes and bars, parks and playgrounds. Much of the featured art shows people outside of their homes, in the environment of the city and the resultant interaction between the two. Each of these varied artists lend a perspective to what summer in the city can mean in all the positive, negative and observationally neutral positions. Including photography, print, glass, sculpture, collage, works on paper, mixed media installation, as well as both figurative and abstract work --- there is something for everyone in this firmly Philadelphian show.

“Summer in the City” will be on display June 5 – August 1, 2009. There will be an artist opening reception First Friday June 5th from 6 - 9 p.m. The opening will embody the energy of a backyard keg party as we celebrate our own summer in the city. The reception is free and open to the public.

erin m rileyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11475713288650742461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3310663421223864378.post-78193501386498833352009-06-01T21:08:00.003-04:002009-06-01T21:10:11.515-04:00<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Desire .10 is an exhibition that focuses on the queer side of desire as expressed by members of the LGBT community and its supporters. This is an open call for varied works that can take any form--just as the form of desire is different in each individual. Painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography and video are all acceptable mediums. Works will be judged on artistic merit as it relates to the theme of the show and the ability of the gallery to properly showcase each artist’s work. This educational mission is materialized once one considers the 30 plus studio artists practicing under the institution’s roof, as well its methods of “acoustic research” in the form of lectures and performances. This ongoing quest to channel the multiple potentialities of reeducation will navigate a thematic experiment entitled: “The P.I.F.A.S. Towne Project” that will run from July 10th-31st. Roughly defined, this study will test the fields of alternative distribution and marketing practices by transforming artist studios into a network of artist-run cultural and commercial spaces. Beyond this, common space at the Institute will be donated to local artists for an experimental exercise called: “The Queue.” Using the kiosk as its standard-bearer for this project, artists will be given the opportunity to create stations where objects/ideas can be sold or exchanged in an environment that encourages performance.

P.I.F.A.S. is currently accepting submissions from the community of Craigslist to create Kiosks. Of the candidates, two artists will be chosen. A formal mission statement should be sent to: jonathansantoro2000@gmail.com by June 1st.

erin m rileyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11475713288650742461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3310663421223864378.post-1594605852996926962009-05-22T15:16:00.001-04:002009-05-22T15:16:53.657-04:00Call for Pacific Coast Artists
New American Paintings Magazine
(Boston MA)

Call for Pacific Coast Artists : New American Paintings Magazine. Based in Boston, we put on exhibitions of varying length depending on the location we choose for each show. Some will last a month while others will only run for the duration of the opening. Even though we originally started out with the intention of putting on these shows illegally, we came to our senses and now rent all locations.

For more information and application guidelines email us at TrespassGallery@yahoo.com

erin m rileyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11475713288650742461noreply@blogger.com0
