The beautiful Rachel wearing the jacket at the critique. The 'jacket' side is up with the vest side forming the hem with double welt pockets inside the arm hole. The closure is hand bound button holes with large snaps sewn behind them and it snaps shut on both the vest side and the jacket side. The fit is boxy with an intentional awkwardness to the proportions.

This is the jacket pinned together with the vest half up. When it is turned upside down this will be the hem. Also notice the view from our studio windows. I know I complain about the insane architecture at DAAP but I have to admit that I have fallen a little bit in love with it too.

Tailoring Project

Pad stitching and basting for my tailored jacket takes hours and looks like amazing chicken scratch. Too bad that it will all be hidden inside the jacket forever. My jacket has two lapels, one on the top and one on the bottom, so I got the joy of doing everything twice.

Repurposed fabrics project for Suki

In conjunction with the boutique Suki I have created a line of clothing made from repurposed fabrics for the in-store brand goose. The collection was inspired by menswear, especially the classic colors and patterns found in neck ties. My materials came from out of date vintage clothing, which is one of my favorite mediums.

These are some of the first photos of the garments and the first time I have seen many of these pieces on a person. The 'persons' here are my beautiful friends Andrea and Milan. Stayed tuned for more updates as the collection progresses.

Final Project of the Longest Year

My sophomore year is finally over and our last project was children's wear. Scout was the model and inspiration for this piece. She's the original bat girl. She wore it down the runway at the end of the year fashion show, and then wore it to school 3 days in a row. Yeah, she likes it.

Our first big project combining our new sewing and pattern making skills was to make a skirt. Mine is inspired by a victorian riding skirt. I tried something new by using bound button holes.

Sophomore Project II

Second term we made blouses. This one is inspired by an artist smock. I liked the idea of an old, worn out, oversized, comfy shirt worn as a work shirt. I imagined that the buttons would have all been replaced and it would button crooked and be misshapen. Well, that was the inspiration, the result is a shirt that I am fairly happy with, it's really comfortable and easy to wear.

Sophomore Project III

Otherwise known as the 'red dress' project. We used the color red to support the Go Red For Women campaign. Ten of us were invited to the charity luncheon here in town where our department head, Margie, spoke about her experiences with heart disease. We also had our photograph taken with the guest speaker, Charyl Ladd.
Next project is children's wear and Scout will be modeling for me.

Christmas crafting

I have been busy whipping up Christmas ornaments and stuffed mascots for a Christmas craft show at 1305 Gallery on Main Street. Of course, now I am behind on items for my Etsy store but I am also running low on inspiration.
My skirt for the end of term was a huge hit. I had to turn it in for the final inspection so I have no photos of it yet, but I will post some as soon as I get it back.

I devoured the colorful pictures and intricate patterns and set to work to make some mascots for my shop. I have made a few and love the hand sewn quality and texture to the stuffies. I need to make the designs my own by finding my own style with them, I want to use less felt and more fabrics like the ones I used to create this Fawn. I'll keep you posted on my progress!

F.F.W. (finally finished works)

September's F.F.W. was this felted chain scarf I made for my husband. It took forever to knit all of these little rings of wool and then I almost ruined it by trying to felt it in the washing machine. It would have been fine had I put it in a pillowcase first. Lesson learned. With a little extra attention, it looks fine and he loves it. Of course watching how hard I worked on it, I think he's afraid to use it!

My sister was visiting from Pittsburgh when I started making my pinafore and she was so excited about the apron idea that I told her to pick out some fabric for her own version. We spent the evening talking and sewing and the finished apron looked so cute on her that she wore it home and probably still has it on.

This is the fabric I have chosen for the pinafore. I have had this piece of pink linen for years but have never been able to settle on what to make with it. I'm using a piece of vintagy floral trim from Reprodepot.com (a few seasons ago) for the straps which will button at the shoulder. I can't wait to try it out.
