Left, a bit of muscle stretching before getting out there - airshow video coverage team (from Kwela) present.

This type of event held at an airshow in this instance resulted in a few problems but the organisers were obviously not aware of the extent of the full size activities. The wind direction resulted in the spectator area being directly upwind of the box creating an upwind no fly zone and having a full size helicopter operating flips every 10 to 15 minutes about 500m upwind behind the spectator area resulted in less than ideal conditions for the light F3K/F6D models. Although air turbulence from the full size activities affecting some of the DLG flights cannot be ruled out, the conditions were the same for all competitors and on that basis, some protests had to be turned down.

F3K Nationals Pictures

Thank you Mark for the invitation to submit to the F3K blog. The event was part of the Henley Airshow which was to celebrate the opening of a new runway at the field.

Sadly only 6 people entered and only 5 flew as Deon had motor vehicle issues. I assume the poor entry is partly due to a conflicting construction seminar being held on the same day (I'm not sure why the MGA calendar wasn't consulted before scheduling the seminar), and the general apathy of a number of some of the F3K community who probably felt that Helney was to far to travel.

Derek Marusich did a wonderful job CDing the event with some assistance from Lionel Brink who was the CIAM official in Bob Skinners absence. I must thank both of them for the wonderful job both did, especially with keeping us on track with the tight time slots we had to fly within. Also for the prompt and accurate scoring. In particular the way they dealt with a couple of particularly opportunistic appeals, that IMO where blatant attempts to get out of jail after messing up flights. It is sad that this noble sport has sunk to this level.

Rounds 1 and 2 where flown between 08h45 and 09h45, the air was cold and an inversion layer was still evident over the area. This made thing's very difficult for the competitors. Alan didn't let this put him off and managed to record a magnificent max in the first slot.

Round 1 - Last flight, 7 minute working time, 5 minute max.

Slot 1

Steph 196 sec 653
Alan 300 1,000
Mark 122 407

Slot 2

Kurt 110 sec 591
Lionel 186 1,000

Round 2 - All Up, Last Down, 3 Flights, 3 Minute Max

Slot 1

Steph 180 sec 94 sec 104 sec 1,000
Mark 68 178 93 897
Lionel 63 180 76 844

Slot 2

Alan 95 sec 161 sec 104 sec 1,000
Kurt 107 102 61 750

Kurt really enjoyed the first flight of round 2, I think it was his highlight of the event at this stage. However he was going to find himself even more delighted once the scores where tallied.

Pre-liminary Results

1. Alan Smith 2,000
2. Lionel Smith 1,844
3. Steph Duponsel 1,653
4. Kurt Stockton 1,341
5. Mark Stockton 1,304

As the entry was so poor, all pilots went through to the semi-finals, the preliminary rounds only serving to provide groups they would fly in.

The semifinals where flown in a lunch time slot, however the amount of lift available hadn't really improved much. Again IMO this was mainly due to a full size helicopter opperating about +-500m upwind of the flight box.

Semi Finals - All Up, Last Down.

Slot 1

Alan 0 sec 54 sec 117sec = 171 sec 606
Steph 93 91 98 = 282 1,000
Mark 108 90 63 = 261 925

Slot 2

Lionel 54 sec 102 sec 67 sec = 233 sec 1,000
Kurt 54 75 43 = 172 771

This saw a major shuffle in the positions:

1. Steph 1,000
1. Lionel 1,000
3. Mark 925
4. Kurt 771
5. Alan 606

The final took place in mid afternoon. Only the top 3 pilots went through. The final result was:

1st Stephane Duponsel
2nd Lionel Smith
3rd Mark Stockton

Later in the day Kurt and I got a chance to demo the DLG models of the main runway directly infront of the crowd. I believe this demo was well received by the audience, especially as this time we did some aerobatics rather then duration type flights.

I must again thank the guy's and girls at Henley Aeromodelers for the splendid day as well as for inviting the F3K / F6D community to be part of the airshow. I must state, that these two classes are not one against the other. Quite the contrary, they are complementary.

The relation between F3K and F6D may be considered as the relation between full size aerobatics and Red Bull Race. Both these doublets have many similar traits. E.g. full size aerobatics is a well established sport whereas the Red Bull Race is a discipline matched to TV. The Red Bull Race pilots come from aerobatic pilots. Observing aerobatics contest is rather boring for non-specialists whereas the Red Bull Race offers an exciting show.

F3K is a competition class which many pilots fly for fun. F6D is intended for attraction of public and media for the benefit of all aero-modelling categories. So both classes have their entitlement.

Some people try to kill the F6D class because they believe it may help the expansion of F3K. I believe that they make harm to hand launch glider pilots in general. I am convinced that strong position of F6D will strengthen the position of F3K. And on the other hand, undermining F6D would also weaken the international standing of F3K.

I know that the promotion of F3K class to World Championship status is not welcome by all modellers. The reason is on hand. In some countries the modellers representing the country are supported by the government. In this this case each new WCh class means dividing the available sum into smaller parts. But World Air Games are organised and financed in a different way, so F6D can’t be invader of F3K.

I know that the F3K class is a great fun for pilots and therefore I support it. You can see my support from the fact that I sent the proposal for upgrading the F3K to World Championship class to FAI. It was my own initiative to submit this proposal on behalf the Czech Modellers Association. (See page 12 of the CIAM FAI Plenary Meeting Agenda).

I wish all F3K pilots good flights and attractive competitions. If you like strengthening the position of F3K, support also F6D.

Best regards
Tomas Bartovsky
Chairman of the CIAM FAI RC-Soaring Subcommittee

March 17th 2008

March F3K League Positions

F3K

Rnd 1 Rnd 2 Total
1. Sadly the event was very poorly attended. However those who did attend enjoyed an excellent day's flying in a non competitive environment. Craig Goodrum (National F3K Champion), Mark Stockton (League champ) and Alan Smith (most successful F3K pilot in the last 2 years) where joined by Lionel Smith, Kurt Stockton, Michelle Goodrum and Derek Marusich. A large variety of models where flown including giant scale F3K models (Mark and Alans Supra's) to micro F3K models (Kurt's Nemo) as well as some electrics in between.

<img style="display:block; I eventually got my Aspirin after months of waiting. I completed the build last week whilst I was on leave, with a few hours practice and trimming before entering the UK F3K event at Stadhampton, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire over the weekend 4th/5th Aug. Unfortunately, I was only able to attend saturday's event due to family commitments. Conditions were tough, with a 14-16mph wind blowing most of the day, partly cloudy with more sunshine towards late afternoon 24-26C. I was in two minds about flying my Aspirin in the conditions, weighing only 280g AUW, and no ballast, it was to say the least a bit bumpy up there, but I was more worried about the low level turbulence for fear of sending my new Aspirin 'cart-wheeling' across the field. Despite my reservations, I flew the 6 rounds with some good results, often pushing my limits downwind in search of those elusive thermals, which seemed to pay off for me in the end. I finished 3rd, behind Mike Stern (1st), who placed 5th at the 2007 IHLGF in Poway, and Richard Swindells (2nd), whom I think is rated as the UK No.1 in F3K currently. Link to full results below. Needless to say, I'm extremely happy with my Aspirin. I could never have hoped for a result like that on its first outing.

I got Ruth to take a couple of pics of me flying the other evening on my local field, which I have attached.

Cheers for now,

Simon

Aspirin Build II thread on FlyQuiet forum, with more on my Aspirin:

www.flyquiet.co.uk

Full Results: f3k.f3b.co.uk

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qGhwYvvSkHg/RsAzxqgxrEI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/taxr7zrUoSU/s400/Aspirin_catch.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098131706501770306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qGhwYvvSkHg/RsAzx6gxrFI/AAAAAAAAAcY/YELI6N_q4hE/s400/Aspirin_with_flaperons_extended.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098131710796737618" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qGhwYvvSkHg/RsAzx6gxrGI/AAAAAAAAAcg/PHbGLSr5xvk/s400/Simon_%26_Aspirin.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098131710796737634" />

F3K League #3 - BERG

On the 4th of August 2007 competitors gathered at BERG to compete in the 3rd leg of the F3K league. This event departed from the norm and was a 6 round F3K event as opposed to the F6D format used to date this year. The weather conditions where some what challenging with light lift traveling fast down wind and abundant sink to catch out competitors who strayed to far from the launch / landing box.

Round 1 (Task B - Last flight), slot 1 saw Alan, Mark and Kurt up gainst one another. Mark and Alan maxed the slot, however Kurt only got away in the last 3 minutes of working time and thus only recorded 166 seconds.

The second slot say Steph, Volney and newcomer Ian Lessem up against one another. Steph maxed while Volney followed an illusive thermal far down wind and paid the price by not making it back to the field. Ian was battling with a new Blaster and only achieved 58 seconds.

At the end of round 1, Alan, Mark and Steph where tied for first spot, followed by Kurt, Ian and Volney.

Round 2 (Task C - Last and Next to Last Flights), slot 1 had Steph, Alan and Ian up. Alan dominated this slot recording a total for the two flights of 343 seconds while Steph and Ian could only manage 185 and 163 respectively.

Slot 2 had Mark, Volney and Kurt. Mark won the slot with 331 seconds vs Volney at 219 and Kurt at 84.

Round 3 (Task E - All Up, Last Down) Slot 1 had Ian (239 seconds), now coming to terms with the Blaster narrowly beating Kurt (236) and Volney (234).

In slot 2 Mark got the upper hand winning against Alan and Steph with 206 seconds vs 123 and 190 respectively.

Round 4 (Task H - Ladder Task), in slot 1 Volney won the task quite convincingly with a total of 210 seconds against Kurt at 30 and Ian at 75 seconds. Kurt had to retire during this task with a broken pod that he hastily repaired. If memory serves correctly, Ian also retired when the elevator stud pulled clean out of the Blasters V mount. While effecting repairs he got cyno down the pushrod sadly ending his first F3K event.

Slot 2 saw Alan gaining the upper hand on Mark and Steph with him getting to 90 seconds for a total of 300 while the other two only got to 75 and thus had a raw score of 210 each.

Due to Ian pulling out and the late hour. It was decided to merge the slots and fly everyone in a single slot for the last two rounds. Special mention needs to go out to Evan who managed to time for two competitors to achieve this.

Round 5 (Task J - 3 out of 6), this task was narrowly won by Alan (297) from Steph (292), Mark (259), Kurt (151) and Volney (150).

Round 6 (Task M - five by two), not surprisingly this is one of Marks favorite tasks and it showed. He managed to use the same thermal for three of his five flights and won the round with 507 seconds vs Steph at 474, Alan at 453, Volney at 328 and Kurt at 235.

When all the dust had settled, the final results where as follows:

1. Alan Smith 4,894 (597)
2. Mark Stockton 4,872 (700)
3. Stephane Duponsel 4,541 (539)
4. Volney Klintworth 3,793 ( 0)
5. Kurt Stockton 2,766 (143)
6. Ian Lessem 2,026 ( 0)

This leaves the league standing's after 3 rounds (and subject to official confirmation by Stephane) as follow's:

+-----+-----------------------+---------+---------+---------+-------+
| Pos | Name | Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | Total |
+-----+-----------------------+---------+---------+---------+-------+
| 1. | Mark Stockton | 875 | 1,000 | 996 | 2,871 |
| 2. | Stephane Duponsel | 1,000 | 871 | 928 | 2,799 |
| 3. | Alan Smith | 1,000 | 774 | 1,000 | 2,774 |
| 4. | Volney Klintworth | 438 | 387 | 775 | 1,600 |
| 5. | Dion Liebenberg | 656 | | | 656 |
| 6. | Lionel Smith | | 612 | | 612 |
| 7. | Kurt Stockton | | | 565 | 565 |
| 8. | Ian Lessem | | | 414 | 414 |
| 9. | John Monk | 406 | | | 406 |
| 10. | Conrad Klintworth | | 225 | | 225 |
| 11. | Brandon Leech | 125 | | | 125 |
| | Lionel Brink | 125 | | | 125 |
+-----+-----------------------+---------+---------+---------+-------+

Many thanks must go to Steph for organising, matrixing etc and Evan for coming out and helping the whole afternoon and not flying at all.

Stephane was spotted just before the event flying this interesting contraption aptly name "Wyrd".

AMA Nationals Results

Not strictly F3K, but very closely related.
