Team USA beat Sweden 5-2...
This means that Sweden plays Switzerland for the BRONZE MEDAL - January 5th @ 4 PM
and Canada plays the U.S. for the GOLD MEDAL - January 5th @ 7:30 PM

The Boston Red Sox are prepared to sign free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.
Boston has agreed to a one-year deal for $9 million with a player option for $5 million. The deal is contingent on a physical.
Beltre won the AL Gold Glove Award in 2007 and '08 while playing third for the Seattle Mariners.
This means the Red Sox can leave Kevin Youkilis at first base and NOW have to try and unload Mike Lowell(AGAIN!!)...

Team USA defeated Finland 6-2 at the WJHC on Saturday night.
Jordan Schroeder recorded three assists to give him 26 points and, in the process, broke Jeremy Roenick's United States record of 25 points.
Team USA vs. Sweden today at 9 PM.

Switzerland lost their first two games at the World Juniors.
They also lost two key defencemen to injuries. Despite these obstacles the Swiss upset the favoured Russians 3-2 in overtime on Saturday!!
Swiss goaltender Benjamin Conz was spectacular - making 50 saves!!
Switzerland vs. Canada today at 4:30 PM.

THE 2010 NHL WINTER CLASSIC

I know a lot of people could care less about the NHL's annual outdoor game...but the HBWHOF LOVES IT!!!
I attended the NHL's FIRST outdoor game!!
Way back in 2003 the NHL held their FIRST regular season game at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
Mrs. HBWHOF and I sat outside in -25 degree temps and watched the MegaStars game - played by alumni of the Edmonton Oilers vs. alumni of the Montreal Canadiens.
Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and the Boys on the Bus vs. Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson and the Flying Frenchmen!!
Then they got down to business and the present-day Oilers took on the Canadiens.
The Habs beat the Oilers 4-3. Despite the COLD we had a BLAST!!!
So, needless to say, the HBWHOF was diggin' it five years later when the NHL decided to make this an annual event.
I LOVED the Penguins - Sabres game...played in a sweet snowfall...with Sidney Crosby scoring the game-winning shootout goal!!
I LOVED the 2009 game at Wrigley Field between the Red Wings and Blackhawks.
I LOVE the venues...especially the old ballparks...Wrigley and Fenway...IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER!!!
I LOVE all the retro stuff. The vintage jerseys, the fedoras worn by the coaches and the pond-hockey feel of the game!!!
So, despite all the naysayers....THE HBWHOF LOVES THE NHL WINTER CLASSIC!!!

Whew!! Team Canada was on the ropes last night...and, barely, came out on top!!
Canada was losing 4-2 to Team USA with ten minutes left in regulation.
Jordan Eberle scored to make it 4-3...then, with 4:15 remaining, Alex Pietrangelo tied it up!!
The 5-minute overtime solved nothing so the USA and Canada went to a shootout!!
The first five shooters scored!!! Jordan Eberle, Nazem Kadri and Brandon Kozun all beat American goaltender Jack Campbell!! Danny Kristo and Jeremy Morin scored for the U.S....but the third shooter, Jordan Schroeder, was stopped by Canadian goalie Jake Allen!!!
Don't be surprised if these two teams meet again in the championships. Team USA exposed the weakness in Canada's defence.
Canada now has a bye to the semifinals. Team USA plays a quarterfinal game against Finland on Saturday at 9 PM.

The forecast for January 1st, in Boston, is a 70% chance of RAIN!!! Unlike football and baseball - you CAN'T play hockey in the rain...

At the WJHC Canada beat Slovakia 8-2. Taylor Hall scored a hat-trick and added an assist.
Team USA defeated Latvia 12-1. Chris Kreider scored a hat-trick.
This sets-up a SWEET New Year's Eve match between Canada and the U.S. @ 7:30 PM.
The winner gets a bye to the semifinals!!

Jason Bay will be signing a 4-year, $66 million deal with the New York Mets!!
The deal is contingent on Bay passing a physical.

Team USA goalie Jack Campbell stopped 22 shots to shutout Switzerland 3-0.
Campbell will be a Windsor Spitfire next season. He led the U.S. to gold at last summer's Under-18 event, posting a 0.75 GAA and .967 save percentage.
Recently Campbell withdrew his verbal commitment to attend the University of Michigan on a full-ride scholarship next season and announced he will join the Windsor Spitfires for the 2010-11 season.
Campbell is in his second season with the United States Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

It looks like the BIG player to watch will be another Spitfire - Taylor Hall!!!
Hall is expected to be the first overall choice in next summer's NHL draft....

Well, I hope all my American friends had a great Christmas.
This is when Canucks make-up for our northern Thanksgiving.
In the good ol' U.S.A. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
The Macy's Parade winds its way through the streets of the Big Apple. The Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys hit the gridiron. Americans OD on tryptophan & beer in anticipation of Black Friday - the onset of the Christmas season!!
In Canada our Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October. We get a 3-day reprieve from work. It's pretty low-key!!
CANADIAN CHRISTMAS IS WHEN WE THROW DOWN!!!
In the Great White North Christmas is NOT over with the unwrapping of the gifts and the turkey dinner....NO!!!....Because December 26th is BOXING DAY!!!!
Boxing Day is OUR Black Friday....the malls are RETARDED!!
But Boxing Day is very different for the HBWHOF!!
December 26th is our family gathering. There is gift-giving followed by a HUGE feast, much frivolity and the GREAT CANADIAN MALE RITE OF WATCHING THE WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!
This year's tourney is in Saskatchewan. The games are jointly hosted by the cities of Saskatoon and Regina (The HBWHOF ALWAYS likes to say "Regina" 'cause it rhymes with "Vagina!!"). CANADA IS GOING FOR THEIR 6TH CONSECUTIVE GOLD MEDAL!!!
This year Hockey Canada is getting a little crazy!! The traditional RED & WHITE is GOING GREEN in honour of Saskatchewan's love affair with their CFL team - the Saskatchewan Roughriders....

The local OHL team - the Windsor Spitfires have 4 players playing for Team Canada:
Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique, Greg Nemisz and Ryan Ellis. Two Spitfires are suited-up for Team USA: defenseman Cam Fowler and future Spits goaltender Jack Campbell.

On Monday night Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 for Brodeur's 104TH CAREER SHUTOUT!!!!
Kids, it's gonna be a long time before another goalie gets close to this record.
BRODEUR IS THE ONLY ACTIVE GOALIE AMONG THE TOP 22 ON THE CAREER SHUTOUT LIST!!!!!!
The next closest netminder is Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings who has 50 career shutouts!!

The HBWHOF's two favourite current NHL players are Alexander Ovechkin and Mike Fisher....And one of my favourite Hot Chicks is Carrie Underwood....SO THE HBWHOF IS, OBVIOUSLY, THRILLED WITH THIS NEWS....

OTTAWA — Ottawa Senators centre Mike Fisher confirmed Monday morning that he is engaged to country music star Carrie Underwood.
He spoke about the impending nuptials at the morning skate, ahead of his team's game against the Boston Bruins.
"It's true," Fisher said. "We're both obviously excited and very happy and so, exciting times for sure."
A wedding date hasn't been set.
Fisher said he popped the question Sunday, but he wouldn't go into any more details. He has been reluctant to speak about the relationship in the past.
But according to a family friend, Fisher, 29, popped the question at his home Sunday afternoon while surrounded by his family and friends, before texting the good news to many of his close friends later in the day.
"He was pretty excited," said the source, who did not want to be identified. "She's a great gal and I think they're made for each other."
Fisher's teammates also expressed their delight.
“Good for him. It’s great," said winger Shean Donovan, adding that he was hoping to get an invitation to the wedding.
And winger Chris Neil, who was also Fisher's long-time roommate, said the engagement was "a long time coming."
"There are going to be a lot of broken hearts here in Ottawa, all those girls who are in love with Mikey," he said. "But he’s marrying an awesome girl. It’s unbelievable for him.”
Neil said he first heard about the engagement through Twitter, about 20 minutes after it happened. But Fisher called to tell him the news shortly afterward.
Meanwhile, Fisher's family friend said the text message was received around 9 p.m. Sunday. When asked why Fisher might have informed friends via text message, the source merely said, "he's a simple guy."
It's not known where the ring came from but it was given to Underwood, 26, on Sunday. It's believed that none of her family were present at the time.
The couple have been dating for about a year, although they kept the relationship quiet until recently.
The romance apparently began after Mr. Fisher, 28, went backstage following Ms. Underwood's March 21, 2008 concert at Scotiabank Place, where she performed before 7,700 country fans.
The couple hit it off, say observers, and began dating some time after their initial meeting.

The BIG controversy in the GREAT WHITE NORTH is the overabundance of HEADSHOTS in the NHL!!!
The headshot deal was exacerbated over the weekend by this hit during Saturday night's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins....

In a December 14th article in The National Post - Dr. Charles Tator, a Toronto neurosurgeon, publicly criticized Don Cherry and, somehow, managed to link Cherry to the headshot contoversy:

With concern over hockey concussions mounting, a Toronto brain surgeon has singled out television personality Don Cherry for promoting an aggressive on-ice culture he believes is leading to more hits to the head.
"I think he is a negative influence because he applauds aggressive hockey," Dr. Charles Tator said in a telephone interview, after delivering similar comments at a seminar on hockey concussions in Regina.
"We like skilled hockey, we like hard-fought hockey, but we don't like people going to the next step where there are hits to the head."
Dr. Tator said studies show that concussions among professional hockey players have increased.
There is no data on amateur hockey, but anecdotally, Dr. Tator hears concussions are also on the rise there.
"We don't want to change the game of hockey," said Dr. Tator, but it needs to return to a time when players "had respect for their own safety and respect for the safety of their opponents." He said Mr. Cherry, known for plugging "rock 'em, sock 'em" hockey play, should be espousing respect .
Mr. Cherry did not return calls for comment last night.
Dr. Tator's remarks come as the National Hockey League grapples with how to better protect players from the kind of head injuries that have taken more than a few out of the lineup. The league has struck a committee to look into head shots, as a debate simmers over what physical play is part of the game, and what goes too far.
But blaming Mr. Cherry, who champions other safe-play causes, is not fair, says former NHL player Keith Primeau. He was forced to retire in 2006 after at least four, but probably more, concussions.
"No one promotes hitting to the head," Mr. Primeau said in an interview yesterday, noting Mr. Cherry's efforts to reduce injury in minor hockey with the "STOP" decal program that gets children to think before they hit an opponent from behind.
For years, Mr. Cherry has also railed against touch icing, saying it needlessly endangered players who chased after a puck, only to barrel into the boards.
Sherali Najak, executive producer of Hockey Night in Canada, said Mr. Cherry "has been the leader in teaching tough, smart hockey and promotes respect amongst players at every level. Everyone who has watched Don over the years knows this, and any indication otherwise is misguided and a short-sighted misrepresentation of the facts."
Dr. Tator, however, thinks those initiatives are "window-dressing" and won't lead to a cultural shift.
"[Cherry] should be espousing no hits to the head in the professional league because he should know that the pros are the role models for the young people," said Dr. Tator, founder of the Think First foundation, which works to prevent head injuries. The Regina conference was a collaboration between it and Hockey Canada.
"I had a mother in my office with her boy last week who said, 'There's a bounty on his head.' And that just is bad culture. And where do they get that bad culture? I think they get it from people like Don Cherry," Dr. Tator said.

Here's the HBWHOF's take on this subject....First, anyone who has strapped on the blades KNOWS you don't keep your head down when you're carrying the puck....'CAUSE YOU'RE GONNA GET SMOKED!!!
Second, THERE IS NO FEAR OF RETRIBUTION IN THE NHL ANYMORE!!
Back in the day....if you cranked a player in the melon and left him for dead....the team tough guy - POLICEMAN they called them back then....would grab hold of the offending player who delivered the hit and beat him to a bloody pulp!!!

Today's NHL has the wonderful INSTIGATOR RULE:

47.11 Instigator - An instigator of an altercation shall be a player or goalkeeper who by his actions or demeanor demonstrates any/some of the following criteria: distance traveled; gloves off first; first punch thrown; menacing attitude or posture; verbal instigation or threats; conduct in retaliation to a prior game (or season) incident; obvious retribution for a previous incident in the game or season.
A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a ten-minute misconduct.
If the same player or goalkeeper is deemed to be the instigator of a second altercation in the same game, he shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.
When a player or goalkeeper receives his third instigator penalty in one Regular season, he is automatically given a game misconduct following that third violation.
A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).
This rule is IDIOTIC!!!

Thirdly, today's shoulder pads and elbow pads are DANGEROUS!! They DON'T prevent injuries...They CAUSE them!!! Today's NHL player is bigger, stronger and faster....and they're equipped with OVER-ARMOURED FLAK JACKETS!!!!

The HBWHOF used yesterday's post to rip on the Leafs pathetic goaltending.
Saturday night the Leafs FINALLY beat Tuukka Rask....and Jonas Gustavsson picked-up his first NHL shutout by blanking the Boston Bruins 2-0!!
It's pretty obvious that Brian Burke and Ron Wilson read the HBWHOF. The title of yesterday's post was I'LL BET JOHNNY BOWER CAN SUIT-UP....

The Ottawa Senators defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-1.
Sens goalie Mike Brodeur got the win in his NHL debut!!
Brodeur was called up from Binghamton of the AHL after Senators #1 goalie Pascal Leclaire broke his jaw Nov. 23 when he was struck by a puck while sitting on the bench.

OK....I realize that a while ago I proclaimed the HBWHOF to be a LEAFS-FREE ZONE.
But I can't let this one escape unscathed....On Friday night the Buffalo Sabres beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2.
Sabres goalie Ryan Miller - who will backstop the U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Team - made 40 saves!! Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala received 10 shots....let in 4 goals....and made SIX FREAKIN' SAVES!!! WATCH THIS BEAUTY:

So, while the RICHEST TEAM IN HOCKEY carries on with this SIEVE and a so-called MONSTER with a fragile heart....The Leafs 1st round draft pick in 2005, Tuukka Rask, who the Leafs brilliant braintrust traded for Andrew Raycroft(Remember him Leafs' fans?), is stealing games for the Boston Bruins!!
Rask is 9-2-2 with a 1.97 GAA and a Save Percentage of .932!!!!

Martin Brodeur broke Patrick Roy's record for most games played. Brodeur played in his 1,030th regular-season NHL game and beat the Ottawa Senators 4-2.
It took Roy 18 seasons to set the record. It took Brodeur only 16 seasons to break it!!
Last season Brodeur broke Roy's record for most career wins by a goaltender.
Martin Brodeur needs ONE more shutout to break Terry Sawchuck's record for most career shutouts. Brodeur and Sawchuck are currently tied at 103 shutouts!!!

During a news conference on Wednesday at Fenway - Lackey said that his wife helped to seal the Boston deal. Krista Lackey(formerly Krista Clark) graduated from Sanford (Maine) High School in 1998 before earning a degree in tourism and event planning from the University of New Hampshire.

Alyonka is an aspiring singer and works for Penguins TV. She also dated Alexander Ovechkin....

Well, it looks like Elin Nordegren has FINALLY had enough....she has consulted a divorce lawyer.
One of Tiger's mistresses omitted part of her resume'....earlier reports described Jamie Jungers as a "model." She forgot to tell the media that she also worked as a stripper at Vegas club Badda Bing....

Why do I get the feeling that Ms. Jungers was the creamy filling in an Oreo cookie??

The HBWHOF goes to a lot of ballgames.
In Detroit the economy is BRUTAL!! With every Tigers or Lions game you come into contact with a myriad of beggars, panhandlers and homeless people requesting money.
There are so many around Comerica Park and Ford Field that, on most occasions, I pass them by without even acknowledging them. Sometimes I make an attempt to discern those that ARE TRULY IN NEED from those who just want a free ride....but that's an impossible task!!
We are only a few days away from Christmas and it's COLD outside and I REALLY feel for those who don't have a roof over their heads.
Today, while I was doing an internet search, I discovered this video of a homeless man doing THE BEST RENDITION OF RADIOHEAD'S "CREEP" THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN OR HEARD!!!
This video was filmed during The Opie & Anthony Show on Sirius XM Radio. The homeless guy goes by the name "Mustard" and he lives on the streets of Los Angeles.
Representatives from The Opie & Anthony Show brought this guy in off the street to promote their "Homeless Shopping Spree!" They had NO idea the dude could sing! During the interview they discovered that Mustard had written a few songs and that he plays guitar. He didn't even OWN HIS OWN GUITAR so they brought one in and this was the result....

The HBWHOF is speechless!!!
I GUARANTEE YOU THAT THIS CAT HAS MORE SOUL AND PASSION IN HIS PINKIE FINGER THAN 99% OF THE PEOPLE THAT PASS HIM BY ON THE STREET....
