THE FIRECRACKER 50 MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE
THE MARATHON MOUNTAIN BIKE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT.
Last week I joined Jenny in a trip to Colorado
She was directing a centering prayer conference in Denver
and I went to the hills ....

To have our old friend Jeff Kerkove and his very good and fast friend
Sonya Looney

show me the race course.

We met up with some of their friends
and rode the entire challenging scenic and fun course.
Two of these dudes ear from Green Iowa and all of them are very fast.

Nice to be able to ride a mountain bike in the
MOUNTAINS

A lot of variety

It was a good day of riding.
To be able to preride the race course takes some of the mystery and fear out of the race.
But, make no mistake
it is going to be a hard day of racing.

It was a great day for a race-- not too hot, almost no wind.
I think my daughter got photos of all of the teams so here they
are, with a few comments. A big thanks to everyone who participated
in this event. Especially the volunteers marshaling corners, registering
teams, driving sag, and helping with all of the detailing that need to
happen to make a racelike this a success!
These guys started 2 minutes behind us and flew pasted us right
after we got around the first corner! Wow were they ever burning
up the road today!

There were 7 DMOS teams!! it looked like a parade when they
pulled into the parking lot

These Rasmussen guys look like they have done this before

Riding some gravel

The Memorial Day Road Races are over
Let the gravel begin
We rode about 60 miles of mostly gravel on Sunday.
You know, the team is promoting the
State Championship Gravel races on Sept. 12 on some of these same roads

Couldn't pass up the hills of New Hartford

On our way to Parkersburg we did the big rollers

Checked out the Parkersburg house we lived in for 17 years
It is the hole with he orange fence around it.

the point of this post was to let you all know that there is a lot of gravel to ride this summer.
Whether you are getting ready for Leadville, The Scout Camp Race or just want
some conditioning or hanging out the the guys -
We are going to do some long riding on the weekends
and we'll make some regular announcements.

MELON CITY CRIT

Muscatine Iowa hosts the third race of the Memorial Day Week End Races.
It is more of a circuit race - in the beautiful Weed Park.
The fields are big and very fast.

I spent the entire race marking the Mack guy - in blue and red
he was riding well and I could match his every move without too much difficulty.
Going into the sprint I had him where I wanted and I was feeling a win coming on.
HERE COMES THE SAD PART
In the last 100 yards the guy behind me in white and green went fling by
and I didn't have enough road left to catch him - I was closing!!!!

This is how it ended up

Our best race of the day belonged to Mike Johnson
Spend a lot of the day toward the end of his 100 plus pack.
And with about four laps to go he started moving up.
He felt good and confident
and ended up in 5th place in his group.

Another Finchford Road Race is in the books
And another very successful event for Bike Tech Racing
We need to thank a lot of people and sponsors
First and foremost we are indebted to race Promoter Mike Johnson and his crew.
And what about all the great food
primarily provided by Chuck Landau (Doughy Joey's/Brown Bottle - in Waterloo)
and Kathleen Porter
This race could never happen without an army or volunteers ...
marshaling the corners is absolutely a safety must
There are many jobs that were picked up by our teammates and friends
But - The BEST is the racing and racers that turn out for this very difficult circuit race.

It was a great day for a race! A little cool, and a bit of wind

but a great day! My daughter Kaia managed to get a few
photos between announcing the riders coming into corner 2.

I DID finish - tht was my goal for this year. On a course as slick as this I definitely count that as an accomplishment. It was only a short bit into the race that I knew it was definitely going to be an exercise in perseverance, not speed. At one point I was trying to think of how to best describe the trail today. Greasy? Water on grease? Then add roots with grease and slick rocks. Oh and don’t leave out the climbs. Climbs in Decorah are a challenge with the best of traction. I did alot of pushing my bike up hill. Tried putting it on my shoulder once, but it was such a load with half the course’s mud clunb to my bike that I quickly put it down again. Oh, and then there was the last 1.5 miles that had gotten chewed up by those up front and by the time I got there it was crumbly yet greasy mud off camber along the hillside. I couldn’t get any traction and my back wheel would slide downhill as I tried to ride. Started pushing it again , the crummy part with that was that the mud was tacky enough to stick to my wheel and gum it up so much that it wouldn’t even roll - Aargh! At that point I became just plain frustrated. I had been keeping a this is tough but good challenge and overall fun attitude until that time. Finished in 2:11:?seconds.

Eagle Point Criterium

The rain held off for everyone who raced from Bike Tech today
That was a pleasant surprise and made for a great day
on a great course at Eagle Point park in Dubuque IA. We had
6 riders from Bike Tech- John, Kat, Mike, Pete, Richard, and Scott.
My favorite pic of the day-- Mike in the lead during the cat 4 race.

"L" Ride

Trails, gravel, off road or Roadie - get out and ride - spring is here and these Ladies are right on. Joined the impromptu Wednesday "L" ride tonight. Watch for notices at the BikeTech google group - join up so you are in the Know. Kat, Jenna, and Amy ready to roll.

Headed south to Prairie Lakes - very nice and peeked in the CF Visitor's Center - it is a very nice space - you can rent it.

Amy and Jenna and Kat - finished out the Lakes loop back into town via Greenhill road trail to Rownd, Grand Blvd and the trails. Nice riding "L"adies.

Come on out you aspiring "L's." Another ride is scheduled for Thursday - 6:00pm behind BikeTech. Watch the Google group as next week may have a MW "L" ride outing as well.
