But Miriam always claimed he had taught her much about insurrectionary politics.

She was brought up in Dublin's Hatch Street, near both her school the Loreto College on St Stephen's Green and University College, Dublin where she graduated in history. She was awarded an MPhil in economic history for research on Irish emigration to England, supervised by George O'Brien. She taught economic history in UCD for some years before marrying Doctor Joseph Lee and moving to England, where she became a lecturer in the History Department of Southampton University. Dr Lee died in 1963. In 1965 she married James Daly, with whom in 1968 she returned to Ireland, where they both became lecturers in Queen's University, Belfast.

The civil rights campaign was taking off at this time, inspired by the black civil rights movement in the US. The imposition of internment without trial by the six county government generated worldwide response. Miriam's organising and public speaking abilities were recognized and welcomed from the beginning. Grassroots activists, who at that time were almost the whole nationalist population of the six counties, were thrilled by the spontaneity and power of her impassioned and wholly genuine rhetoric. They were especially appreciative of the fact that she came from the South to share their oppression and their resistance. She earned the love of internees and their relatives and neighbours by visiting them in what were called their "cages" in Long Kesh to talk about Irish history.

A particular and very popular quality of her style, which perhaps came from her father's background, was that her genuine outrage did not take away her Olympian contempt for the forces of repression, both those of the State and of the loyalist murder gangs with which they were in collusion, even overlapping in membership. Her dynamic presence was felt on television in Ireland, Britain, and France, where she countered the insidious propaganda of the establishment- supported and Nobel Prize- winning -- and pocketing -- "peace" people. Her dynamism extended into her university lectures, where she expressed her convictions with a forthrightness which greatly impressed her students, including the many who came from a non-nationalist background.

Very early on she realised that there was developing a politics of confinement of the struggle to the six counties, and the promotion of an "internal" settlement which would place the inheritors of the great and noble struggle for Irish democracy in the same category as the Ku Klux Klan-like loyalist thugs, and give Britain the paternalistic role of benevolent overseer of a six county settlement. Republicans illustrated their community policing politics with a British army map of Belfast showing streets coloured in green and orange. She failed to get backing for what she saw as necessary, a massive campaign to educate the people in the 26 counties to the realities of the oppression in the six counties -- to make up for their lack of experience of the daily social, political, military, police and death squad oppression. She saw such a campaign as the only way to turn the struggle from a six county civil rights struggle to a national liberation struggle. A friend who agreed such a campaign wasobviously absolutely necessary and the only consistent position for a Republican said "This is becoming a war against internment". The potential campaign, which might have prevented developments like the giving up of articles 2 and 3 of the Irish constitution, which claimed the whole of Ireland as the national territory, was vetoed by the leadership.

Miriam was a militant member of the Prisoners' Relatives Action Committee, and was overwhelmingly voted on to the national Hunger Strike Committee. She founded the highly efficient and effective Murray Defence Committee to save the Murrays from the death sentence in Dublin. In that campaign, she collaborated with Seamus Costello, and soon recognized his politics, especially his opposition to "Ring Road socialism", as the only continuation of James Connolly's politics today. She joined his party, the IRSP. After Seamus's assassination she was elected chairperson, and led the party very successfully for two years. At the time of her death she was in charge of the IRSP prisoners' welfare, and gave a great deal of her time to visiting the prisoners. ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________

Miriam Daly

—from IRSP

IRSP Chairperson / INLA Volunteer Miriam Daly

Assassinated on 26 June 1980

Outspoken republican socialist Miriam Daly, aged 45, was murdered on 26 June, 1980, in her home on Andersonstown Road, Andersonstown, Belfast. Her body, bound and shot, was found by her nine-year-old daughter after she returned from school.

Mrs. Daly, a lecturer in economic and social history at Queen's University in Belfast, was one of the original founders of the Irish Republican Socialist Party with Seamus Costello, and become the party's second chairperson.

She joined a list of martyrs that came to include Noel Lyttle, a fellow republican socialist and committed activist in the H-Block Campaigns, IRSP/H-Block activist Ronnie Bunting, and John Turnley of the Irish Independence Party, all of whom represented the national leadership of the H-Block.

Committee and as such became targets for the state apparatus, and the loyalist paramilitary death squads under its control, in its desire to crush the prisoners' struggle. It was suspected that the same SAS unit that killed Daly also killed Bunting and Lyttle in October of 1980.

Indicating her level of involvement and influence within the movement, a four-man honour guard from the INLA joined the funeral cortege as it halted outside the Daly house in West Belfast on its way to the requiem Mass and fired a volley of shots over her casket in a tribute to the fallen martyr.

Miriam Daly, IRSP Chairperson and INLA volunteer, is buried at Swords, near Dublin, in the Irish Republic.

____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________

7 May 2004

Special Report: Miriam Daly

—by Hubert Murphy, Fingal Independent

Buried with her first husband, Dr. Joe Lee and her sister, Kathleen, is Miriam Daly.

People passing the grave, apart from family and old comrades, will hardly stop to ponder about Miriam Daly. But her story is one that deserves to be told.

She was no ordinary woman. A lecturer in economics and social history at Queen's University in Belfast, she was immersed in the Civil Rights issue, then the H-Blocks protest and despite the tense situation, lived life as she wanted free.

Renowned as a great public speaker and leader, she went on to become a founder member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party.

Aside from her political views, she raised a family with husband James Daly.

In 1952 she had married Dr. Joe Lee, who had a general practice in Dorset Street and family connections in Munster and in Swords. He died in 1953 and was buried in what is now the relatively old part of St. Colmcille's churchyard.

She married James Daly in 1965 in London and the couple moved to Belfast in 1968.

Still living in Belfast, Jim revealed that Miriam was born MacDonnell, with family connections in Dublin and Kildare.

A highly intelligent woman, she went to UCD and would lecture in economic history.

"When I visit her grave I still meet people who remember her funeral," remarked Jim.

One can sense many great memories flooding back into Jim's mind as he comments on her.

"She always had a special affinity with Dunluce Castle on the County Antrim coast, home of the MacDonnell clan. We visited there on her birthday, 16th May, 1980.

"Late in the evening our ten-year-old twins had got out of sight playing around the Castle. I got worried and said I would go and find them. She said "Let them play. They may never pass this way again."

It was to be the last time that Miriam, Jim and the kids would see the place as a family again.

For on June 26, 1980 she was murdered -- on a sunny day in Belfast.

She was found by the kids, coming home from school. She had been bound and shot in the head.

Another family shattered by violence, left with a memory no amount of time will erase.

Nobody was ever brought to justice for her killing, many linking it to collusion between loyalists and the SAS.

There is an indication that a memorial may be erected by her graveside to honour her name, sometime in the future.

But perhaps the greatest tribute is that almost 25 years after her death, her family still mourn her loss, remembering the woman who gave them so much.

____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________

26 June 2001

Straight From the Heart

—by Anthony Neeson

Anthony Neeson speaks to Jim Daly, whose wife Miriam, a member of the National H-Block Committee, was murdered by loyalists 21 years ago.

By a strange twist of fate, Jim Daly's father fought on the anti-treaty side during the Civil War while his future wife Miriam's father fought with the pro-treaty forces.

Miriam was born in the Curragh of Kildare in the Free State Army camp there while Jim was brought up in Cheshire in England -- one of the many ironies of post-Civil War Ireland.

When Jim's parents died he was brought back to South Armagh, where future SDLP deputy leader Seamus Mallon would be in his year at school. The party’s future leader, John Hume, was a year behind Jim at Maynooth College.

Miriam, on the other hand, grew up in Dublin and later went to UCD, where she would eventually lecture in Economic History. Fate was to bring them together and it came in the shape of Jim's philosophy professor, who told him there was someone in Dublin he wanted him to meet.

"I've never forgotten that I was introduced to her as as saint," says Jim, laughing at the memory. "She's the only person I've ever been introduced to as a saint. At that time she was already married to Dr Joe Lee, but he died a couple of years later at the age of 37 of a heart attack. And so a couple of years later we were married. Miriam was seven years older than I.

"We were married in London and then I got a job at Queen's University and Miriam got a job soon after at Queen's, so we both came to Belfast in 1968 and moved into Stranmillis, when all hell broke loose."

Miriam immediately immersed herself in the growing Civil Rights movement and was quickly recognised as a talented and passionate public speaker. "What she said was genuine and from the heart," recalls Jim. "She could get a terrific emotional response because whatever she said she felt it herself. She was direct and honest and people responded to that."

Miriam and Jim both became more involved in the political upheaval that was taking place throughout the north and particularly in Belfast, with Miriam contributing to the Republican News. Both joined Sinn Féin. "I would have been a Marxist and would read Marxist literature at that time, but although Miriam was a socialist she wouldn't have got bogged down in Marxist philosophy. Marxists sometimes can't see the wood for the trees because they're looking at the big picture.

Miriam, on the other hand, could very much see the cement."

In 1974 Jim and Miriam were forced out of Stranmillis and moved into Andersonstown. As Jim remembers, a number of people were getting burnt out at the time or were receiving bullets in the post, so they decided that they would be safer elsewhere and so left Stranmillis behind. After the murder of Seamus Costello, Miriam became chairperson of the IRSP at a time when that organisation was flourishing.

Then, as the prison protest in the H-Blocks and Armagh began to escalate Miriam was elected on to the National H-Block Committee at a time when other prominent republicans who were involved with the prisoners and their families were being targeted and murdered.

"We were always wary about our safety over in Queen's because at that time the Holy Land was quite loyalist. But Miriam always said that if they were going to get us it would be here in Andytown, and she was right.-- Jim was in Dublin attending a German language course on June 26, 1980, the day Miriam was murdered.

Earlier that morning he recalls a pleasant domestic phone call, revolving around their two 10-year-old twins, Marie and Donal. The People's Democracy had already informed the pair that they were on a loyalist death list, so they had bought a new heavy mahogany front door and decided to keep the back door locked at all times.

Jim has played over the events of that terrible day many times in his head, but he can't be sure what really happened.

"It appears that Miriam was sitting in the porch enjoying the warm sun and waiting for the kids to come home from school," says Jim. "She must have left the door open when she went to the shop next door to get an apple tart and some cigarettes. When she came back they were waiting for her. That's how she got caught.

"She was shot five times in the head, but they had kept her for a while before, tied her up and held her for some time, which is awful to think about. Then the kids came home and found her."

Miriam Daly was 51 when she was murdered. Although the UFF claimed her murder, Jim still believes that there was higher involvement in her death. At the same time other leading H-Block campaigners such as John Turnly and Bernadette McAliskey were being targeted.

"She came very much to the notice of agencies that were poking their noses in here, for sure. That’s why she was targeted.

“She had a tremendous energy and never stopped. People called her in the middle of the night to come to an RUC station to help out, while relatives would phone her to find out where their loved ones were.

“She never stopped. It was amazing how much dedication she had. She was always upbeat and confident and optimistic. If there is an opposite to demoralise, she moralised people.

"The RUC took away Miriam's handbag, a large book we had with phone numbers and addresses in it and they took my photograph from an international driver's licence. “

There were five spent cartridges lying on the floor which they didn't pick up. They were more interested in political witch-hunting than trying to find out who carried out this murder."

Miriam Daly was buried in Swords, County Dublin. Jim says her death affected many people, and she is continually missed by her many friends and family, not least himself. "I think of her every hour, on the hour," he says with quiet emotion in his voice. " The kids have grown up and are doing very well for themselves. We're getting on..."

bronxgaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05634006236955424437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32525808.post-51223257198540364372009-06-25T10:32:00.000-04:002009-06-25T10:33:46.517-04:00RADIO REBEL GAEL Surface To Air Musical Missiles ! The fact that he is still here and has not been deported is tremendous news; the fact that he remains in prison now almost 17 months is not! Our deepest gratitude and respect go out to all the individuals and Irish-American organizations and attorneys who have contacted their elected representatives in Washington and those efforts are the reason Pol remains here and his case is FINALLY being given due and proper consideration at the highest levels of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). We cannot rest on our laurels for reaching this point, but must continue to contact those representatives and reach out to others to win the ultimate prize – the goal of securing Pol’s freedom and the right to live in openly, productively and freely in his home of 25 years, America, with his American wife and family!

To date, pressure on the DHS Director from Capital Hill has won Pol some time – now we must keep mounting and growing that pressure in the Senate and House, but ALSO escalates contact with President Obama and Vice-President Biden (himself a Catholic who has a record of supporting the causes of Irish Nationalists from Northern Ireland). These men are the DHS Director’s only and immediate bosses; they can take this case over the top by directing her to affirmatively utilize her authority in issuing a decision in Pol’s favor if they hear from enough of us, both as individuals and Irish-American organizations. While we continue to keep building favor and influence on Capital Hill, it is IMPERATIVE to contact President Obama and Vice-President Biden on Pol’s behalf.

We have heard of people who have gotten in contact with their local mayors and state representatives and they have been touched by Pol’s plight and have brought it to the attention of Congressmen and Senators who they deal with regularly, and have changed the minds and hearts of those Washington representatives who have otherwise not been responsive to calls and letters of support from individual constituents. Politicians on ALL levels interact as a matter of routine and have their own rapport beyond what any individual or group might have, and ANY local politician can conceivably convert the position of those less responsive to our own calls and letters. This is the last call; it is Pol’s last opportunity for freedom and the real justice due him! You have brought us to this point, bought Pol and his attorney additional time, now please keep the effort up and bring the only right and just conclusion to this matter by having the White House join with our friends and allies on Capital Hill to end this matter favorable for Pol and Joanna! We’ve won a big battle thanks to your efforts; now please stay the course and don’t relent until we’ve won the war!

Fight on for Pol’s freedom until it is guaranteed!!

FOR THOSE WHO GET A FAVORABLE RESPONSE FROM ANY ELECTED OFFICIALS OFICE TO GET THE REPRESENTATIVE'S NAME THE STAFF MEMBER'S NAME AND PHONE/FAX NUMBER AND SUBMIT IT TO information@polbrennan.com SO WE CAN PASS IT ON TO THE ATTORNEY FOR REFERENCE AND FOLLOW-UP!

Thank you all!

If you have any questions in this regard, please send them to Mike@polbrennan.com or information@polbrennan.com or phone Mike at 949-370-2970 or or TOLL-FREE at (888) 811-2184 straight away!
Sincerely

Pol Brennan Support Group

bronxgaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05634006236955424437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32525808.post-83926688392602145932009-06-12T09:54:00.004-04:002009-06-12T09:59:15.734-04:00The Rebel Summer Songs Show !

RADIO REBEL GAEL PaddyCast # 44– The Rebel Summer Songs Show

http://spinxpress.com/bronxgael

Featuring over *Two Hours* of your finest Fenian favorites by Ciaran Murphy, Damien Dempsey, Brendan Loughrey, Margo, Derek Warfield , Cruachan, Icewagon Flu, The Brazen Heads, JD & The Longfellows, The Tossers, Flatfoot 56, 1916, The Pogues, Blood Or Whiskey, Mischief Brew, The Bareknuckle Boxers, Dancin’ Knuckles, and The Lonely Schizophrenic !!!

http://www.archive.org/details/RADIOREBELGAELRADIOREBELGAELPaddyCast_44TheRebelSummerSongsShow

bronxgaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05634006236955424437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32525808.post-80809016636231336192009-06-08T14:01:00.002-04:002009-06-08T14:07:25.841-04:00Musical Brother of Another Mother ! For example, a major reference book such as Sydney Ellliott and W.D. Flackes’s Northern Ireland: A Political
Directory 1968-1999 (Belfast: Blackstaff Press, 1999) contains no entry on ‘dissident republicanism’ , although it has entries on Republican Sinn Fein-CIRA and 32csm-RIRA. Similarly on the internet, a major academic website such as CAIN carries nothing that helps to answer the question.

Surprisingly , the clearest definition is to be found in Wikipedia:

"The term "dissidents" has become the primary term to describe Irish republicans who politically continue to oppose the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 and reject the outcome of the referenda on it.” (2)

In this sense theirs is an “opinion which is contrary to a majority decision” and therefore a form of “dissent”. But is it republicanism that they dissent from? A recent article in the Irish Times made the following point:

"There is still the view among a minority that the 1998 Good Friday agreement was a betrayal of 1916 Irish republicanism. It accepted, however temporarily, a unionist "veto" and continued British "occupation" of Northern Ireland. That minority view, of the Good Friday agreement as a "sell-out", is consistent with the attitude of the Provisionals in the 1980s, of the IRA during the Border Campaign of the 1950s, and of the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War. It is also in line with the views of the men and women of Easter 1916." (3)

So it is clear that it is not 1916 Republicanism that they dissent from, therefore the expression ‘dissident republicanism’ to describe Republicans opposed to the Belfast Agreement is incorrect. Republicans opposed to the 1998 Belfast Agreement are no more ‘dissidents’ than republicans opposed to the 1921 Treaty were ‘irregulars’. Jonathan Tonge refers to them as ‘Republican Ultras’ (4) but does not specify why their position is ‘ultra’ compared to their predecessors. Richard English prefers the term ‘dissenters’ to that of ‘dissidents’ and define them as “ people who sharply disagree with Provisional orthodoxy about the evolving peace
process ” (5) But here again it is not Republicanism that they dissent from. Republicans opposed to the Belfast Agreement are ‘mainstream’ or ‘traditional’ republicans, not ‘dissidents’.

In fact, as a Newsletter editorial noted some time ago, it is in the ranks of the Provisional movement that the real ‘dissident republicans’ are to be found:

“Sinn Fein also needs to sort itself out. The irony is that it is Adams, McGuinness et al who are the real dissident republicans, because they are the ones who have reached an accommodation with unionists and the British Government. They are the ones who have abandoned the abstentionist policy. They are the ones who have legitimised partition.(6)

When they are not referred to as ‘dissidents’, Republicans opposed to the Belfast Agreement are sometimes branded as ‘criminals’ and were even recently described (as he stood beside the head of the PSNI) as ‘traitors’ by Martin McGuiness (who did not see the irony in that he is a British Minister serving the interests of the Crown). Such characterisation is widely off the mark. In a letter to the Irish News, former blanketman Padraic Mac Coitir (not close to so-called ‘dissidents’) criticised the use of the term ‘traitors’ by Martin McGuinness to describe such groups:

“From Thomas Ashe who died on hunger strike in 1917 right through the 1920s, 1940s and 1950s men and women protested in British gaols against being branded as criminals. During those years the IRA had little support and were castigated from the pulpit and by others who claimed to be the true heirs of the 1916 Proclamation. Because the IRA of that era didn’t have an electoral mandate they were wrong to engage in armed struggle – that was the well-argued opposition to the republican activists. But for all their criticism, no-one in the nationalist republican camp then ever referred to the IRA as ‘traitors’. Some of the Sinn Fein spokesmen who recently referred to today’s so-called dissidents as criminals were themselves in gaol fighting criminalisation by embarking on protest and hunger strike in the 1970s. Following the noble example of the people of that earlier struggle I won’t brand anyone with offensive tags which can never be retracted. But I can’t help reflecting sadly on the prevailing and shameful scent of sheer hypocrisy. ” (7)

When the media does not call republican organisations opposed to the Belfast Agreement ‘dissident’, they tend to refer to them as ‘republican splinter groups’. Qualifying these organisations as ‘breakaway factions’ and ‘splinter groups’ is also problematical. They certainly were the product of splits, but on a closer study of those splits in 1986 and later in 1997, whether they can be defined as ‘splinter groups’ is debatable.

In September 1986, for the first time since 1970, the Provisional IRA held a meeting of its supreme decision-making body, the General Army Convention. The Convention discussed dropping abstentionism. Abstentionism was firmly established in the Constitution of Oglaigh na hEireann (IRA) and a two thirds majority was required to change it. The policy was set
out in Section 1: “ Participation in Leinster House, Stormont or Westminster is strictly forbidden and in any other subservient Parliament, if any. Any volunteer who, by resolution proposes entry into Leinster House, Stormont or Westminster automatically dismisses himself from membership of Oglaigh na hEireann. ” (8) Sinn Fein had a similar constitutional bar. Section 1b of the Sinn Fein Constitution stated: "No person ... who approves of or supports the candidature of persons who sign any form or give any kind of written or verbal undertaking of intention to take their seats in these institutions, shall be admitted to membership or allowed to retain membership." (9) The 1986 General Army Convention was able to make the constitutional change 75 per cent for and 25 per cent against. Similarly at the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis on 2 November 1986 delegates voted 469 to 161 to abandon the abstentionist policy regarding Leinster House. Therefore given that there appeared to have had a majority vote those who opposed the constitutional change and went on to form Republican Sinn Fein and the Continuity Army Council are referred to as a minority splinter group.

This characterisation can be challenged on a number of grounds. People opposed to the change in the Constitution argued that changing the IRA’s Constitution required two separate Conventions. At the first, embargoes specifically forbidding participation in Leinster House, Stormont or Westminster would have to be removed from the Constitution. Only then, at a second Convention, could a mention on entering parliament be voted on.

Therefore, the IRA Constitution had been breached. Those opposed to the changes in the Constitution were supported by the outgoing Army Executive. A majority on the Army Executive had voted against the proposals for dropping abstentionism. The Army Executive then rejected the decision to end abstentionism as anti-constitutional , dismissed those who supported the new departure for breaching the existing IRA Constitution and co-opted new Executive members and elected a Continuity Army Council as it held the necessary ‘continuity’ of authority. Furthemore those opposed to constitutional change claimed that the 1986 General Army Convention had been gerrymandered by the setting up of new IRA organisational structures for the Convention without which there would not have been the necessary two-thirds majority required to change the IRA Constitution. (10)

Something similar happened in Sinn Fein. According to section 1b of the Sinn Fein constitution in 1986, proposals supporting entry into Leinster House were banned. Before the Adams leadership put forward a motion to enter Leinster House, they needed to change section 1b by a majority vote. They did not do so, thus broke the existing Sinn Fein constitution and rules. Opponents of the motion also claim that the vote at the ardfheis was gerrymandered : in 1986 the number of votes at the ardfheis, which reflects the size of Sinn Féin, almost doubled from 1985 to 1986, and then reverted to the 1985 level in 1987. (11) The traditionalists claim that they did not split and form “a new breakaway movement” (12) -they kept the old one intact. (The word 'Republican' was added to Sinn Fein to emphasise the republican beliefs of the party.) To speak of “the formation of a new party” in 1986 is incorrect. (13) It was the others who broke away from the IRA and Sinn Fein, not them. They thus claim not to be some “rival
organisation” (14), but to be THE authentic Republican Movement.

The IRA that had accepted the constitutional changes in 1986 underwent a significant split with the emergence of the so-called 'Real IRA'. The RIRA emerged from a conflict between IRA Army Council and Army Executive in 1996-1997. (15) In October 1997, the majority of the Executive argued that signing the Mitchell Principles represented a direct infringement of the
IRA’s constitution, challenged the IRA’s right to use force and hold arms and constituted a de-facto recognition of the unionist veto. As a result of the unconstitutionality of Mitchell Principles, the Army Council’s failure to ratify the 1997 ceasefire, the army council’s treatment of the executive, the poor morale within the organisation six members of the Executive resigned on 23 October. (16) In November 1997 they held a meeting in a farmhouse in Oldcastle, County Meath were they re-organised Oglaigh na hEireann as the “ true ” (17) post-1986 IRA as the Constitution had been breached. (18) They were therefore the ‘real’ IRA. Recently, a new Oglaigh na hEireann emerged. It is not clear how the group justifies its title. It does not justify its existence in terms of the IRA Constitution and its ideology and politics are unclear. (19) The legitimacy of its title is therefore questionable.

Republicans opposed to the Good Friday Agreement therefore cannot be defined as ‘dissidents ‘ in ideological terms. Nor can they be defined as ‘splinter groups’ in organisational terms, the CIRA having grounds to be the authentic pre-1986 IRA and the RIRA being the true post-1986 IRA. However, Danny Morrison, who does not mind the Provo label (20), challenges their claim to be the authentic republican movement "because they refused to go along with or respect the opinion of the majority" of the movement. (21) They are minority groupings. He recently argued in a letter that "those republicans opposed to the political process which emerged from the peace process are thoroughly outnumbered by the diametrically- opposed views of other ex-lifers, ex-blanket men, former women prisoners and ex-hunger strikers in support of Sinn Fein policy. ...

This minority is actually saying to the men and women who served imprisonment for their beliefs -you have no right to make up your own minds about strategy or the way forward..."( 22) What weakens his argument is that there are remarkable similarities between the 1969-1970 and the 1986 and 1997 splits. The Provos had also 'refused to go along with or respect the opinion of the majority' of the Official IRA and a minority had walked out of the Army Convention on 13-14 December 1969 and at the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis on 11 January 1970. (23) Did that make them 'dissidents' or a minority splinter group? Does the fact that they were 'outnumbered' (24) make their claim to be the republican movement less authentic and less legitimate? Did that imply that they were telling people 'who served imprisonment for their beliefs' such as Sean Garland, Liam McMillan, Seamus Costello or Cathal Goulding that 'you have no rights to make up your own mind'? Like the later ‘dissidents’ of 1986 and 1997, the early Provisionals claimed that they hadn’t split and formed a new organization -they had kept the old one intact. Ruairi O Bradaigh made a point which applies to 1969/1970, 1986 and 1997: 'no splits or splinters -long may it remain so provided we stick to basic principles'. But when it
comes to rules and principles being ignored, 'the minority is going to expel the majority'. Attendees enjoyed a fine evening of traditional Irish music, plentiful hot hors d'oeuvres, open bar (including at least 15 beers on tap), a delicious buffet dinner plus inspiring speeches and lively conversation. The evening was enhanced by fabulous warm and sunny weather and a Times Square Manhattan location.

Traditional Irish music was provided by the always incredible Mary Courtney on vocals and guitar, along with Pio Ryan on banjo and Gerry Enright on bodhrán. The trio entertained the packed room with a great mix of lively reels, jigs and ballads which was enjoyed by young and old alike.

Master of Ceremonies Brian Mór Ó Baoighill gave the official welcome to the crowd. He gave get well wishes to a recuperating John McDonagh, who is typically Brian’s co-MC. Brian also spoke of Republicans who passed away during the past year and asked for a moment of silence in their honor.

Brian then introduced Darryl Levey, who read a statement from the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry Prison:

“We, the Republican Prisoners in Maghaberry Gaol wish to express our gratitude for your support over the past number of years.

Since the signing of the Stormont Agreement our former comrades in the Provos have ensured that we are denied the right to be recognised as political prisoners. This refusal has been fought for tooth and nail by Republican Prisoners, both past and present.

In 2003 Republican prisoners endured a dirty protest for segregation and political status. Segregation was eventually gained, much to the annoyance of the Prison Officers' Association in the Six Counties and the British administration. Again in 2006 Republican prisoners embarked upon a protest for better conditions. This protest was suspended in 2007 after successfully securing a number of changes.

After the protest was suspended we made it clear that the status quo would not be tolerated for another three years. With suspending the protest, we made it clear that our protest could be reactivated at a time of our choosing.

With this in mind we must ask you, the people of the United States, to continue the good work which you have conducted on our behalf to highlight our plight to the outside world. Without you – the true inheritors of the Republican ideal – the voice of the Prisoners would go unheard.

You have been a great inspiration to us all, and we send our thanks and appreciation for your work”

Mike Costello then spoke briefly about an ardent supporter, Martin Griffin, who has been a prolific contributor to our website with essays and book reviews. Martin has been ill recently and unfortunately was not able to attend the dinner. Mike thanked Martin for his hard work and commended his indomitable spirit. Martin will be presented with an official tribute from the organization in the near future.

Tiokasin Ghosthorse of the Lakota Nation spoke of the historic connection between the Gael and the Native American, mentioning the support given to the people of Ireland by the Lakota people during the great starvation. Tiokasin gave a blessing of the food in his native tongue and played a native tune on the flute.

After dinner, Jane Enright introduced Pat Sullivan who spoke passionately about our late member and friend John Costelloe, who passed away last December. Pat spoke of his long friendship and FDNY working relationship with John. He told the crowd that John was the first fireman he met on the job who was not only aware of James Connolly but could quote passages from Connolly’s Labour in Irish History. Pat spoke of John’s commitment to socialism, social justice and republicanism. It was a touching tribute to John. Pat and Jane presented a memorial plaque to John’s father, Michael Costelloe, on behalf of Cumann Na Saoirse Náısıúnta.

Next, Maggie introduced Sandy Boyer and presented him with the 2009 Sr. Sarah Clarke Human Rights Award. Sandy has been a life-long human rights activist. He has lead many campaigns to free Irish political prisoners including the Guildford 4, Birmingham 6, and Róisín McAliskey. He has taught Irish politics and history and has contributed articles on the Irish struggle to publications in Ireland and the U.S. Sandy has been co-host of Radio Free Éireann, along with John McDonagh, on WBAI radio (99.5FM) in New York City for many years.

Sandy spoke about the plight of Republican prisoners, in particular, mentioning the ongoing cases in America of the Malachy McAllister family and Pól Brennan. Sandy finished by saying “if each of us in the activist community could do just a little more, then next year we will have something to be very proud of.”

Maggie Trainor then read a statement from Bernadette Devlin McAliskey which included this stirring assessment of Sandy Boyer: “In fact, contrary to the brash egotistical and opportunistic revisionism currently writing the script of Irish- American relationships, the real history of the hard work and shared effort to raise in the USA awareness, consciousness (not the same thing) solidarity and support in the Irish progressive struggle, within the context of international progressive context, within the human rights context, within the context of anti-imperialism, anti-racism and anti-sectarianism cannot be written without Sandy Boyer’s name appearing right through it like a piece of seaside rock.” Regarding all the campaigns on which Sandy has worked, Bernadette said, “…very little happened without his quiet unassuming but steady hand on the backroom business of making it all work.”

Brian Mór then introduced Mary Costello and presented her with the 2009 Pearl Flannery Humanities Award. Mary was born in Birmingham of Irish parents who were forced to leave Belfast in the 1930’s due to the Orange Order pogroms in the British occupied six Irish counties. Mary has been prominent in the campaign to promote the Eire Nua program and with the distribution of Saoirse in the United States. Mary and her family have also been involved in campaigns to support dependants of Irish political prisoners in Long Kesh and other British prisons.

Mary spoke eloquently of her family’s experiences facing brutality, sectarianism, and pogroms in the six occupied counties. She closed by accepting her award on behalf of all the Nationalist women in the six counties who, in the face of it all, kept their families together and instilled a great grá in their culture and nation of birth.

The final award -- the 2009 Michael Flannery Spirit of Freedom Award -- was presented to Liam Ó Murchadha by Brian Mór. Liam is a long time activist in the cause of Irish freedom and is a strong proponent of the Éire Nua federal solution for Ireland. He has written many articles and essays on Irish and Irish American history, specifically, on the role of the Fenian Movement in America. Brian called Liam “the very definition of a Fenian.”

Liam spoke of his long friendship with Michael Flannery beginning at an Easter commemoration in 1966. He stated that following the Adams led abandonment of republicanism in 1986; Flannery felt it was time for a new organization to preserve -- in America -- the principles of 1916. He convened a meeting of seven men at his house, including the late George Harrison and Joe Stynes, and formed Cumann Na Saoirse Náisíunta. Liam told the crowd that Michael Flannery’s steadfast Republicanism should inspire us all to settle for no less than the full goal of a united and independent Ireland.

Des Dalton, Vice President of Republican Sinn Fein, addressed the crowd via telephone from Ireland: "Irish history since 1921 has witnessed a series of agreements culminating in the St. Andrews of 2006. The point about this is that none of them have produced a lasting settlement because none of them have addressed the cause of the conflict in Ireland which is the ongoing British occupation. What we have gotten has been a cycle of armed resistance followed by an agreement followed by yet further resistance and yet another agreement. The nature of British rule in Ireland has not changed, be it in the 21st century or in the 20th or 19th or, for that matter, for over 800 years of British occupation of Ireland.”

Dalton continued: “We believe that there is an alternative to the St Andrews Agreement. We believe that the Eire Nua proposal provides for a viable and realistic framework for building a new Ireland” and “substituting the name of Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter, for the common name of Irish men.”

He also spoke about the U.S policy of visa denial to proponents of Eire Nua and the current political situation in Ireland including the abusive raids by the RUC/PSNI and the detentions of Republicans who do not support the so-called agreements imposed by the British government. Des ended his remarks by thanking those in America who continue to support true Republicanism.

Brian Wardlow then spoke about the importance of continuing to fight against the U.S. visa denial policy. Wardlow stated that “The Eire Nua program was a threat to the status quo because Eire Nua provides for real access to power all the way to the local level. He added that the Irish Republican movement in the U.S. will be shouldered by a new generation, who will seek the guidance of our predecessors in the promotion of Eire Nua.

Brian Mór thanked Tomas O Coisdealbha for his work with the popular Fenian Graves project that features memorials to former activists who took part in the Irish freedom struggle and who spent some time here in the United States (see www.irishfreedom.net). He also reminded the crowd that this weekend marks the 94th anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide, which occurred when two million Armenians living in Turkey were eliminated from their historic homeland through forced deportations and massacres resulting in the deaths of at least half a million Armenians.

Brian wrapped up the evening with a thank you to the crowd for attending the dinner and making it a great success.

www.irishfreedom.net
_________________
Cumann Na Saoirse Náısıúnta
National Irish Freedom Committee
http://www.irishfreedom.net/

bronxgaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05634006236955424437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32525808.post-71356982653543121932009-05-04T11:00:00.000-04:002009-05-04T11:02:26.055-04:00Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee, 2009Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee, 2009

All IRSCNA members are encouraged to attend. Seven political
prisoners allied to the Irish Republican Army, and three representing the
Irish National Liberation Army, sacrificed their lives to expose injustice
and brutality in British jails and to restore Political Status to their
imprisoned comrades. These ten martyrs, united in cause and principle
under different factions of Irish Republicanism, left an unfulfilled
legacy of strength in unity to Irish Republicans today

In 2009, the Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee will again
gather together in unity to pay homage to the memories of the ten H-Block
Martyrs, who gave their lives in the fight for political status in the
H-Blocks of Long Kesh 28 years ago.

Please join us on Saturday, June 6th at the Abbey Pub, 3420 W Grace,
Chicago IL. We are pleased welcome Ray Collins, formerly of Belfast, as
our guest speaker and musical performer. During the Hunger Strikes of 1980
and 1981 Ray visited the prisoners, played numerous benefit gigs, and
embarked on speaking tours in Britain and Europe to highlight the struggle
for Political Status by Irish political prisoners in the H Blocks of Long
Kesh and Armagh women's prison.

The Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee was founded in 2006 to
commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1981 H-Block Hunger Strike. In the
spirit of Theobald Wolfe Tone, who sought to unite “Catholic, Protestant
and Dissenter”; in acknowledgement of the leadership of the Easter 1916
Rising, which united disparate Republican forces against the might of
Britain’s army; and most especially in the memory of the 1981 hunger
strikers, who died united in protest inside the H-Blocks of Long Kesh; The
Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee will do our part in unity to
pay respectful homage to the legacy of ten brave men who sacrificed all
for Ireland. We are a diverse group of Republicans from the Irish Freedom
Committee, Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America, as well
as independent Republicans. All involved are devoted to the pursuit of a
United and Sovereign 32 County Socialist Irish Republic, free of British
military and administrative rule; and to the support of the families of
Irish Republican political prisoners.

For more information call 708-655-2078, 312- 560-9311 or visit our website
at www.wemustbeunited.com

--
Colm Mistéil
Irish Republican Socialist Movement
North American Coordinating Committee Member
Joe McCann Cumann, Chicago
http://www.irscna. org | colm@irsm.org

Is míse le meas,
Tj O Conchúir
Irish Republican Socialist Movement
North American Coordinating Committee Member
Prison Welfare Officer
Larkin / Gallagher Cumann Coordinator
PO Box 901479 KC MO 64190
*******
The Starry Plough, newspaper of the IRSP
http://www.starrypl ough.net/
Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee
http://www.wemustbeunited.com

__._,_.___

bronxgaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05634006236955424437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32525808.post-20860603205747455172009-05-01T14:40:00.001-04:002009-05-01T14:43:36.037-04:00RADIO REBEL GAEL May Day Show !<a

RADIO REBEL GAEL The May Day Show: PaddyCast # 36 -- In Tribute to the Working Class Hero ! His songs touch on a wide variety of issues and topics related to both Ireland and beyond. They range from songs about modern day racism in Ireland to the war in Iraq. Ciaran has played a wide and varied array of gigs, from Palestine solidarity fundraisers, to playing for the protesters at the Hill of Tara in Meath to playing at the West Belfast Feile. His honest and unflinching lyrics have won him many fans not only in Ireland, but around the world. With the long awaited release of his debut album the future certainly looks bright for Ciaran Murphy!

‘Ciaran Murphy is a singer/songwriter/one man acoustic hand grenade from West Belfast. A protest singer in the finest tradition and politically sharp as a syringe needle hanging on razor wire. Akin to Damien Dempsey with pin pulled out.’ ShitenOnions E-Zine Review

Available At http://www.shamrocksuperstore.net

Or Through Our Ebay Store at http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Lucky-Leprechaun-Store

Can Listen To His Music At http://www.myspace.com/ciaranabc

For Bookings / Gigs / Interviews please contact Shamrock Promotions on crashdvd@hotmail.co.uk
or 07746320359

bronxgaelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05634006236955424437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32525808.post-13735777832798057832009-04-13T11:01:00.001-04:002009-04-13T11:03:03.487-04:00RADIO REBEL GAEL Remembers Easter Week 1916 with Pride<a

RADIO REBEL GAEL Easter Week 1916 – We Remember With Pride ! They are being consistenly denied TR and CL for funerals and Holy celebrations, family illnesses etc.

The POWs believe that the govenor is dening TR's due to recent upsurge in Republicanism in the 6 and this is seen to be a backlash victimising the weakest link in Republicanism so for to put pressure on external Republicans.

The two POWs who went on the protest this morning are in great spirits and they told me they are in for the long haul, as all POWs on E3 are. They are not going to be broken and if segregated will continue the protest.

These men need our support and need us to back them up fully on this. If anyone is interested in helping to organise a mass campaign please contact me ASAP via email

irishfreedomnews@gmail.com

These men have fought for their country and now they are being treated worse than prisioners in third world dictatorships.
