Roter Adler Orden ...

Hi again. I don't have much time lately, sorry :-( I have a new, cool picture that I want to share with you.

Saschaw described it on the GMIC forum:

On the neck:

- Preußen, Roter Adler-Orden II. Klasse;

- Preußen, Kronenorden II. Klasse;

And on the bar:

- Bayern, Militär-Verdienstorden, Ritterkreuz I. Klasse;

- Bayern, Verdienstorden vom Heiligen Michael, Ritterkreuz I. Klasse;

- Preußen, Kriegsdenkmünze 1870/71 am Band für Kämpfer (no way to tell if steel or bronce, I'd guess steel);

- Bayern, Denkzeichen für das Jahr 1849;

- Bayern, Dienstauszeichnungskreuz II. Klasse für 24 Jahre.

A nice early group, picture is taken post 1871 but pre1897, may be 1870s or 1880s !!!

Verwundeten Abzeichen Citation

Here it is: a great award citation for a Flieger Jakob Barth. Look at the wings on a sword !!!

It states that:

"Ich habe dem Flieger Jakob Barth das Abzeichen für Verwundete in schwarz verliehen.

Der kommandierende General der Luftstreitkräfte A.m. W. b. v. Hoeppner. Generalleutnant.

Grosses Hauptquartier 23.9.1918"

Militärpaß No. 11, Mr. Erich Kühn, Jahresklasse 1915.

His first unit was Ersatz Bataillon Garde Füsilier Regiment Rekutendepot I. 31.10.1915 he was

transfered to Eisenbahn Hilfs Bataillon Nr. 8 (2. Kompagnie) and then (27.11.1916) to Ersatz Bataillon des Eisenbahn Regiments No. 4 (1. Kompagnie).

He received Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse (2.9.1916).

He saw an action in: Verdun (1915), Maas, Somme (1916), Santin (1917), Lothringen (1918), Frankreich (1918), Kemmel, Flandern, Ailette, Reims, Marne, Reims.

Documents was printed in Formular Magazin Wilh. Obermeier, Berlin N.

So, let's begin a new thread: "Short History of a ... Regiment." I'll try to describe regiments present in my Militaerpass documents.

The first one will be a (Leib) Grenadier Infanterie Regiment No. 100.

First of all, the full name of the regiment was: Kgl. Sächs.1.(Leib-)Grenadier-Regiment Nr.100

It was created on 30.4.1670 in Dresden. During the First World War it was part of a XII Armee Korps, 23 Infanterie Division, 45 Infanterie Brigade (together with a Kgl. Sächs. 2. Grenadier-Regiment Kaiser Wilhelm, König von Preußen Nr.101).

Militärpass No. 10

Here we have a Militärpass of Mr. Stefan Grätza.

He began his interesting service in Infanterie-Regiment Graf Barfuß (4. Westfälisches) Nr.17 in 1914 (22.8.1914). In 1916 he was transfered to 6th Kompagnie Ersatz Bataillon, Infanterie-Regiment Herwarth von Bittenfeld (1. Westfälisches) Nr.13.

He was in Kriegslazarett in Poniewiez because of a "Nierenentzündung".

In 1917 he was transfered to Reserve Infanterie Regiment Nr. 39 and then to the Feldluftschiffer Abteilung No. 5 (few months later to a Feldluftschiffer Abteilung No. 2).

He took part in battles near: Champagne, Mass, Aisne, Vouziers, Antwerpen (with IR 17), Toten Mann, Somme (with IR 13), "Wald von Malancourt" and Höhe 304 (with RIR 39), Siegfridfront (with Feldluftschiffer Abteilung No.5, from 5.4.1917 to 23.4. 1917).

Important to metion - Mr. Grätza was part of a "Ballonzug 13" and "Ballonzug 81".

According to his Soldbuch, he received the "Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse" (15.10.1918).

Great.

Militaerpass No.9

Here we have a Militaerpass of a Dragoner Otto Krause.

His first unit was a 3. Schlesische Dragoner Regiment No. 15, Ersatz Eskadron (he entered the service on 1915 as a Kriegsfreiwilliger ?).

He fought in a Putna Battle and Sereth (Romania). Then: Aisne (1917), Oberelass (1918), Lothringen, Flandern, Scarpe and Somme, Monchy, Bapuame, Siegfridfront, Cambrai, St. Quentin (all 1918).

He was awarded with a Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse.

Great Pass, my first one with the Dragoner Regiment entry.

Militaerpass No. 8

Hi again.

Here it is, Unteroffizier Ignatz Kaczmarek. Served with Infanterie-Regiment Graf Bose (1. Thüringisches) Nr.31 from 1910 to 1912.

As far as I can understand, he was called up into 5. Westpreußisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.148 in 1914, then spent some time in Lazarett.

In 1917 we was posted to Kgl. Preuss. Infanterie Regiment No. 419.

He fought on a Easten Front: Mława, Narew, Serock, Ostrów, but also in places like Reims, Aisne, Marne, Champagne (generaly on a Westen Front).

He was awarded with:

Eiserne Kreuz 1914 II Klasse (1916)
Verwundeten Abzeichen in Schwartz (1918)

There are additional documents attached to a Militaerpass: Besitz-Ausweis fur Verwundeten Abzeichen in Schwartz (nice one) and Fuehrungs-Zeugnis.

Militaerpass No. 7

2325... Militaerpass of Mr. Matzek.

Another interesing one (all are interesting!). Our hero, Mr. Matzek, began his service in Leib-Kurassier Regiment "Grosser Kurfuerst" (Schlesische) No. 1, 2 Eskadron (Jahreklasse 1907). He bacame a Gefraiten in 1910.

He was recalled in 1916 (?) to Reserve-Fuss Artillerie Regiment No. 6 (6 Batterie), then in 1917 he joined to Fussartillerie Regiment No. 153.

He fought in Lothringen, Champagne and Verdun.

I can find more entries in this Pass, like: Bespannungs Abteilung Ersatz Bataillon Fussartillerie Regiment No. 6, and Leichtranken-Abteilung des Ers. Batl. Fussartillerie Regiment No. 6, but I have no idea what does it mean (Bespannungs/Leichtranken ? ).

This is my first pass with Artillerie entry, great.

Now I know what are "Bespannungs" and "Leichtranken" units. Greetings to Mr. David Gregory.

A Bespannungs-Abteilung was a detachment that provided the horses and any equipment needed to pull things. Since there were relatively few motor vehicles available during WW1, most armies relied heavily on horses for transport.

The Leichtkranken-Abteilung of a replacement unit would be for men who were not badly ill (leicht = slightly, krank = ill/sick). He may have been recovering from wounds or illness. Another term you will find in this context is Genesenden-Kompagnie = convalescent company.

Militaerpass No. 6

Here is a Militaerpass of Mr. Bunk (sorry can't read his first name).

He was born in 1874, he had no children.

His first unit was a Husaren Regiment "von Schill" (1. Schlesisches) Nr. 4, garnison in Ohlau.

What is interesing, I can't find any battles entries inside but Mr. Bunk became first Gefreiten (1896), then Unteroffizier (1914), Sergeant (1917) and... Wize.... in 1919, don't know who. Anyone (David?;) ) ?

Awards received: Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse.

After the war he served in Reichswehr.

This is my first Militaerpass with the Husaren Regiment entry, cool.

Militaerpass No.5

Here it is, Mr. Johann Poloczek (Katholik).

He entered the service in 13th October 1909 as a Ersatzrekrut, his first Truppenteil was 3. Schlesischen Infanterie Regiment Nr. 156 (5te Kompagnie).

Mr. Poloczek received Schuetzenabzeichen, he was in first Schiessklasse.

In 1913 he began his service in Infanterie Regiment "Keith" No. 22 (1. Oberschlesisches), 10 Kompagnie.

He was moved to Infanterie Regiment "von Winterfeldt" No. 23 (2. Oberschlesisches) in 1916.

He saw an action in Champagne area, Arras, Marne, Somme etc.

He was awarded with Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse in 5.2.1917 (Urkunde is attached to a Militaerpass).

This is one of the best Militaerpass I have, I will edit this post as soon as I buy Ruhmeshalle, still can't decipher many entires :-(

Militaerpass No.4

Here is the fifth Militaerpass of mine.

Mr. Anton Ezopp, born in 1890, city of Imielin (?).

He began his service in 1912, his first unit was Infanterie-Regiment 156, 6 Kompagnie where he was trained with Gewehr 88 and 98.

In August 1916 he entered 2. Kompagnie, Ersatz Bataillon Landwehr - Infanterie Regiment Nr. 11. He saw an action in Tarnawka, Rawa and so on (generally - Eastern Front).

In August 1917 he was transfered to Minenwerfer Kompagnie 246. He took part in battles of Champagne andAisne.

He spent some time in Lazarett in Marburg.

He was awarded the Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse.

Militaerpass No.3

The only Ulan I have.

Mr. Franz Troedel, born 1890, Koenigsdorf. No children.

He entered the service in 1911 as a 3-jaehrig Freiwilliger. His first, but not last, unit was Ulanen-Regiment von Katzler No. 2 (3 Ersatzeskadron). As soon as 1913 he bacame a Gefreiten, then in 1914 a Unteroffizier, April 1917 - a Sergeant and at last a Wachtmeister (5.10.1917).

He was awarded - 11.5.1915 - Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse, 7.11.1919 (!) - Eiserne Kreuz I Klasse.

He saw an action in Russland (mostly on ex-Polish teritorry: Nowe Miasto, Janow, Radom, Czestochowa, Kielce, Zwolen etc.), Rumaenien (Arges, Putna, roten Turmpass?) and Frankreich (Flandern, Antwerpen).

A very interesting person.

Militaerpass No.2

Here it is: Militaerpass document of Mr. Josef Grochala, Zweijaehrig Freiwilliger.

His first unit was a Koenigin Elisabeth Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 3 (6 Kompagnie). He began his service in October 1908.

He was trained with a Gewehr 98, he was in a I Schiessklasse (no Schuetzenabzeichen received).

One more interesting entry: Nachmusterung Fruehjahr 1916 in 3 Kompagnie 5 Garde - Regiment zu Fuss.

Militaerpass No.1

Here is my first Militaerpass - the first one presented "online" and the first one I have ever had. Magic one and the most important (even if there are only few entries inside!).

Let me introduce Mr. Moritz Goepfert (Landsturmist).

He began his "dienst" on 3rd October 1916 in I Ersatz Bataillon (Leib) - Grenadier Regiment No. 100 (2. Rekruten Depot). 37 years old Moritz was just 160 cm high and had no children, lucky.

Anyways, Mr. Moritz was transfered to 4 Ersatz Kompagnie 241 Infanterie Regiment as soon as 27th October 1916 and then, again, to 1 Ersatz Bataillon of 103 Infanterie Regiment.

Anyone can tell me what is it: "9. K.S. Armierungs Bataillon Nr. 142" ? Can't find it in my Ruhmeshalle. The thing is he was probably somehow transfered to this unit and he spent there almost two years... and I can't find it.

Now, some of the "Mitgemachte gefechte" entries, between October 1916 untill 1918 he fought on Artois, Aisne, Reims, Champagne etc. He have spent some time in Lazarett in Dresden.

No awards have been given to Mr. Goepfert (at least there is no award entry in the Militaerpass).

Probably, he have survived the war.
