Great Free Tool to Easily Work with Google Maps

Today I'm going to introduce you a new free tool which lets you easily and comfortably work with Google Maps. I foresee some scepticism ("we've seen thousands of such stuff", "there's google earth - what else do ya need?").
So let me object and name its main advantages:

1. The program is free and fully functional
2. It lets you merge large parts of images from Google Maps. So the main drawback of google Maps is eliminated - you don't need to save those partial images and concatenate it somehow using Photoshop or whatever.
3. A very exciting feature: create maps based on merged images from Google Maps for OziExplorer and other navigation/geomapping software to be used in GPS devices (PDA's etc)
4. Advanced settings for flexible usage of cache (no need to download images once again if you've already done it) - you save traffic.
5. Lets you schedule you connection so if cost of your internet-connection daytime-dependant you can also save money.

Well, I think this'll do to begin with. The program is called GoogleMV. It was developed by a Russian programmer Nikolay Serebrennikov.
Program interface is pretty comprehensive and user-friendly:

In program settings you can change the way you can navigate: for instance, using mouse wheel for zooming. You can alsos select source of images (cache, internet or both) and type of map (aerial, map, hybrid).

So it's very useful for making your custom large maps of certain areas and for creating GPS maps for Geo-locating software. It would be especially interesting for those wgo trave a lot and want to spend some money on gps maps.

How to save time, traffic and disk space with better music quality, for free

First, let me introduce this great free software thet lets you easily grab and encode music CD's to your computer in the format of your choice:

Audiograbber 1.83 Free

Audiograbber is a beautiful piece of software that grabs digital audio from cd's. It copies the audio digitally-not through the soundcard-which enables you to make perfect copies of the originals. It can even perform a test to see that the copies really are perfect.

Audiograbber can also automatically normalize the music, delete silence from the start and/or end of tracks, and send them to a variety or external MP3 encoders, such as Fraunhofers L3enc, or even use some MP3/WMA encoders internally for automatic creation of MP3's.

Audiograbber can download and upload disc info from freedb, an Internet compact disc database. You can even record your vinyl LP's or cassette tapes with Audiograbber and make wav's or MP3's of them.

There are a lot more functions in Audiograbber, but to put it simply: Audiograbber has the most features one can wish from such a program!

If you want to use a free mp3 encoder insted of paid codecs, then download LAME MP3 DLL. (361 Kb, ver 3.95.1).
Unzip the lame_enc.dll and put in the same directory as Audiograbber and you will have an internal MP3 encoder with advanced functionalities.
The dll is also found at this mirror site. You can for example use Winzip to unzip the dll.

Now, the most exciting thing is closely related to what you've read in the title of this article: saving time, traffic and disk space with a better music quality: go to the program Settings -> MP3 settings and select the item shown on a screenshot below:

With the OGG Vorbis format you can get better quality of your digitally encoded music files compared to mp3's and you can save up to 5 times more disk spaces (that is, an .ogg file will be, let's say, 0,5 MB compared to the same quality 2,5 MB mp3 file).

If you have tons of music on your computer that is probably the best way to save disk space and time and traffic when uploading and downloading those music files.

Oh, Sh!t! Firefox is unsafe for storing passwords

Recently I read this article and was stunned by information in it.
It appears that firefox is very unsafe in storing passwords. Using "storing login information" feature can result in sending sensitive information to third-party (that is, stealing your private information) sites. A simple javascript autosubmits an html form that contains fields with login and passwords and though they're not fillded in, during autosubmit this information is being sent out.
Frankly, i'm dissapointed. I haven't figured out possible ways for practical usage of this critical security hole (I just put myself on the place of potential hackers) because the html form is located on the site where this information to be submitted. so apriori you voluntareely submit it, but i'm not a hacker at all and may not know on some efficient ways for stealing security information in the way described above.
Looking forward to explanations and updates from Mozilla team.

Google acquires Yandex (?)

We know Google's power. It's capable of penetrating in lamost each part of our life. It's now morethan just a search negine. You can read mails, advertise, monetise, work remotedly using google's online services, search acros your desktop, organise your fotos etc etc...
A Google share is now worth more than $500. recently google acquired YouTube for 1.65 billion dollars. In short, seems like Google is everywhere at top positions.
Actually, there are still a few places left on earth where Google isn't at top yet.
If you forget about china for a moment what will come up first in your mind?
Yes, that's right. It's ... Russia. In Russia Google is surprisingly modestly ranked amongst other search engines. It holds just 4th to 3rd position with 5 to 10 % of all searches.
Knowing Google strategy it's clear it won't last for long. According to sources which wished to stay anonymous, Google intends to buy Yandex which holds the top position in Russia with more than 50% market share.
It hasn't been oficcially announced but there some evidences of prospects for such a deal. Recently Google added more functionality to Russian morphology and stemming used in its search. At the same time Yandex (http://www.yandex.ru) changed some elements of its design in search result pages, making us to notice some signs of resemblence to Google design.
So the most likely scenario will be a soon-announced deal at which Google acquires Yandex.

On 25 October a spam list was registered on the Internet with the subject "ATTENTION!!! President of Russia has dead". The link from the letter supposedly leads to BBC news, but when the link is accessed one of the latest Trojan horses starts to download, Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.uj. The virus enables any harmful code to be launched on the infected computer. To date this method, using "loud headlines" has been practised mostly by intruders from the West. However, Kaspersky Lab experts believe that the report of the death of the Russian president in broken English tells us the authors of the virus are Russian.

Self-fixing Firefox Bugs Related to Problematic Extensions

If you're a Firefox fan, you already know that sometimes this browser goes crazy and buggy after installing one of those 'cool & sexy' extensions. Such problems occur fairly often, for instance, recently I came across a very unpleasant bug - I couldn't run the built-in DOM Inspector that got me totally upset. Luckily, I managed to fix the bug (by using about:config and searching for dom. The self-explanatory options can give a hint even to an unexperienced Firefox user).
In order to be armoured in front of such unexpected bugs, I post here a list of buggy extensions with the solutions how to fix them:

Extension	Versions affected	Problem	Workaround
Adblock	All	Having the OBJ_TABS setting enabled has been known to interfere with the ActiveX plugin (if installed). It can cause the plugin to ignore its configuration and run any ActiveX control, instead of the controls it is restricted to. Such a situation could potentially be a big security risk.	If you have the ActiveX plugin, keep the Adblock OBJ_TABS setting disabled. A mozilla code fix for this issue is forthcoming.
		Having the OBJ_TABS setting enabled will interfere with the Java plugin. Java applets will not display unless this setting is disabled.	If you want Java applets to display, keep the Adblock OBJ_TABS setting disabled.

		Causes Google Gmail Chat to crash.	?

Portable Software has become very much popular especially among those who travel a lot and can't live without their favorite computer programs.
Let me, first, define what portable software is. Actually, it's an amazing thing. It let's just copy all necessary program files on your flash drive... and that's it! No need to install it, so wherever you are just stick your flash drive (or a cd-rom or a SD-card or whatever which can store information electronically) and you can enjoy using your favorite programs. It's especially helpful when a program keeps your settings and preferences (such as internet browsers) - all bookmarks settings will be kept no matter what computer or laptop you're using.
So let me finally start. I don't give priority to any of the programs below because they are for certain purposes and could be split in several categories (such as entertainment, work etc). How to send links to webpages without mail programs when on a business trip

When on a business trip, I've been coming across the same issue quite often: the issue of sending short information (most often - links to websites) to somebody's mail addresses. It could be addressess of my colleagues, or friends, or relatives. One is lucky when he has an internet access in his hotel room. But what if he doesn't? Just fancy that: a preety common situation when your boss gets you on the phone (you're almost a thousand miles away from your office) and asks "John, I need contact information of those air tunks suppliers which we selected last week as our general procurement contractor. I need it asap." You're trying to explain that it is somewhere on your office desk or what he needs is to typr their simple web-address... But the receiver's already hung up. Well, your first thought is go and find the closest internet-cafe. Ok, a girl at the reception in the hotel's lobby tells you that, and, having spent half an hour rather than 5 minutes you were given for providing the necessary information to your boss, you finally find yourself in a small overcrowded internet cafe. What next, though? You know that checking your personal e-mail account at one of the numerous free services could be unsafe. The mail program in the internet cafe is not properly set up (as you find it out from one of the personnel). Well.... wait... commiting a suicide is not an appropriate way out. Just listen: I recently found a good link on reddit.com - to my surprise it was hidden somewhere deep in the heart of it. Luckily, I popped it out somehow. You'll ask me whta is it I'm talking about. the answer is fairly obvious - it's called LinkSender Web 2.0 and I'm going to explain to you why it's called so. First I went to the Linksender Website (http://linksender.quicksolver.info) - and just added the link which is located on their mainpage to the browser's favorites (it can be done in two ways - right-click-> add to favorites or -> just dragging and droppoing on your browser toolbar). If your browser is Internet Explorer there can be a popup message warning that adding that link could be unsafe. As usual, don't trust him and press OK - anyway, it's not your personal computer, you're in an internet cafe, don't you forget? (frankly, it's really completely safe and I'll explain it in more details in my future posts)

Ok, you're done, the link is bookmarked. what's next? Next step is very simple, but before that you may want to try to customize your linksender on that website - add your reply address (any you like) and so on. Then you go to the air tanks supplier website and select Linksender among the browser Favorites or on the toolbar. Don't woory - you won't be redirected anywhere. Instead you'll see a pretty window which will ask where you want to send a link to the page to. Without hesitation type your boss' e-mail address and press "Enter". There wil be a message saying the the link's been sent successfully. more over you have a possibility to point a reply email address and short comments to that link.
Now you can be sure that your boss will get information in time and you may try to cautiously ask for a raise in near future. Good luck! Enjoy easy link sending.
