Congratulations to all of our Junior Division participants! Lisa and Crystal were able to see many of the projects today and we were very impressed by your excellent projects and poise during interviews. You were excellent ambassadors for our state!

We would also like to extend a special congratulations to Sarah Seibert, finalist in Junior Individual Documentaries, and an invitation to all to watch her documentary tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 8:45 p.m. in the Stamp Student Union Margaret Brent Room. We hope that we can get together an excellent Illinois delegation cheering section to wish Sarah the best. Good luck, Sarah!

Welcome to National History Day!

Welcome to College Park, NHD participants! On Sunday, June 14, we look forward to seeing many of you arrive on campus today.

Project Registration will take place in the Colony Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The Welcome Ceremony will start at the McKeldin Mall (in front of McKeldin Library) starting at 6:30 p.m.

Our Illinois Pizza Party will begin directly after the Welcome Ceremony (about 7:30 p.m.). We will meet at the Hornbake Library Plaza (in front of Hornbake Library) to eat pizza and toss frisbees. You can also pick up your buttons and t-shirts at the pizza party. Our rain location for the pizza party is the Stamp Student Union Food Court. Hope to see you soon!

Let's also congratulate Morgan Aranda who will be joining us at NHD in the Junior Individual Performance category. Morgan will represent Newberry Academy with "Gautreaux vs. Chicago Housing Authority: Alexander Polikoff's 40-year Battle for Integrated Public Housing." Morgan's teacher is Adrian Viccellio. Morgan is most excited about the BUTTON-TRADING opportunities at NHD - those of you who plan to trade buttons will have trouble keeping up with her!

History Fair students and teachers now have the opportunity to get the latest from HF staff and share their own questions and ideas so that all participants' experience with History Fair may benefit. Click on the links listed in the right-hand column to learn news, ask questions, post comments. Let's keep the conversation in all the blogs relevant and positive!

We'll post our ideas, tips, and news about this year's History Fair--and we encourage you to join the conversation. Your questions or finds will help other teachers and students.

Teaching Chicago History
Chicago History can be used effectively throughout the U.S. History survey. On the blog, we will offer ideas and resources to expand your knowledge of and use of Chicago history topics. For example, when you are teaching about abolition, you can introduce students to John and Mary Jones, two free blacks who were part of the abolitionist movement in Chicago or show them the newspapers about the blacks and whites in the city who regularly rescued helped escaped slaves and defied the Fugitive Slave law. Abolition did not only occur on the East Coast--it happened right here, and by exploring it through the local lens, students may become even more engaged!

Teachers can share Chicago History syllabi, specific lessons plans and activities, field trip tips, and links to other curricula. You may also post questions and comments: looking for a lesson plan on the homefront during World War 2 or took a great field trip with your students to Pullman Porters Museum? Post it in comments!
