Turkey Trivia!!!

Turkeys originated in North and Central America.

Usually the turkeys are found in hardwood forests with grassy areas but they are capable of adapting themselves to different habitats.

Turkeys spend the night in trees.

You can easily see a turkey on a warm clear day or during light rain.

Turkeys fly to the ground at first light and feed until mid-morning. Feeding resumes in mid-afternoon.

Turkeys start gobbling before sunrise and generally continue through most of the morning.

The field of vision of wild turkey is so good that it is about 270 degrees.

The wild turkey has excellent hearing.

A spooked turkey can run at speed up to 20 miles per hour.

A wild turkey can run at speed of up to 25 miles per hour.

A wild turkey can fly for short distances at up to 55 miles per hour.

Domesticated turkeys or the farm-raised turkeys cannot fly.

Turkeys were one of the first birds to be domesticated in the America.

The male turkeys are called 'tom', the female turkeys are called 'hen' and the baby turkeys are called 'poult'.

The male turkeys gobble whereas female turkeys make a clicking noise.

The male turkeys gobble to attract the female turkeys for mating. The gobble is a seasonal call made during the spring and fall.

A mature turkey generally has around 3,500 feathers. The Apache Indians considered the turkey timid and wouldn't eat it or use its feathers on their arrows.

According to an estimate, during the Thanksgiving holiday more than 45 million turkeys are cooked and around 525 million pounds of turkey is eaten.

About ninety-five percent of American families eat turkey on the Thanksgiving Day whereas fifty percent eat turkey on Christmas holiday.

Almost fifty percent of Americans eat turkey at least once every 2 weeks.

According to the National Turkey Federation about twenty-four percent of Americans purchase fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving and seventy percent purchase frozen turkeys.

North Carolina is the number one producer of turkeys. It produces around 61 million turkeys per year. Minnesota and Arkansas are second and third number producers of turkey.

The part of the turkey that is used in a good luck ritual is known as the 'wishbone'.

The red fleshy growth from the base of the beak that hangs down over the beak is called 'snood'. It is very long on male turkeys.

IN BRIEF: There were 40 responses to this Survey #4 -- a relatively small number of responses due to the open-ended, written-formatted (as opposed to multiple choice) survey format. We strongly suggest you view the complete results by clicking here, but a synopsis of results findings and analysis follows:

BRIEF SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

1. The top two social media were Facebook and Linked In, with Twitter a close third.

2. In the vast majority of cases (> 85%), an individual who choose Linked In as his or her first choice choose Facebook as his or her second choice, and vice versa.

3. The individuals preferring Linked In generally chose it thematically because of the businesslike and focused nature of the platform. High signal-to-noise ratio.

4. The individuals preferring Facebook generally chose it thematically because of the focused nature of the platform, and its relationship -friendly (multimedia) and comprehensive, communicative nature. It is perceived as a mixed business and social medium, each of which aspects is perceived to enhance the other.

5. Facebook is perceived to offer greater value to its adherents than Linked In, which is narrower in communications options, and offers various tiers of service at varied fees. Facebook is the largest of these platforms, and is still growing at a faster rate than Linked In. Generally speaking, Facebook is far-better branded than Linked In, and it markets aggressively and in a "cooperative" manner with other platforms, which it does not treat as competitors, but as additional selling outlets.

6. The three most important platforms for an individual to have a presence on are Facebook, Linked In and Twitter. Organizations (companies selling services or products) are served better by Facebook and Linked In. Job seekers and consultants in search of branding and client acquisition are directed to Linked In as a high priority.

7. Twitter adherents invariably choose Twitter because of its ease of operation, its across-the-board accessibility through many user-friendly applications, its multipost capability and its ease of use.

8. Facebook, Linked In and Twitter are the dominant platforms in the business networking arena, with a grip on more than 90% of the marketplace. This last item was not derived from the results of this survey, but through supplemental research.

A NOTE ABOUT BIAS: Bear in mind that most of the responses were derived from respondents through Linked In, Facebook and Twitter. The other media and moderators which were approached with the survey, were significantly resistant to posting the actual survey than the top three. The reasons for this reluctance are the subject of conjecture, but one possible reason is that the platform operators and the moderators anticipated results which would minimize their significance and popularity.

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN: Giving Thanks

Here in the U.S. this week we will be celebrating the Thanksgiving Holiday and last week I gave thanks to our TNNW Buzzworks Team, who specializes in creating buzz about TNNW (and is most likely the reason you're reading this at the moment).

This week however, I wanted to thank you...our loyal TNNW reader. We know that there are plenty of other information sources out there to choose from, and through it all you continue to read us. And as we know our readers like the quality articles of our various authors, we also know that you have come to increasingly expect more from us.

With that said, what would Thanksgiving be without the "GIVING"? After all this holiday ushers in the entire Holiday Season where we give gifts to those we care most about - this year Douglas and I, and the rest of the TNNW crew are being incredibly proactive. That's right...we're giving you the gift of 8 new columns by 8 new authors. Who are they? What will they be writing about?

It's a surprise! You're just going to have to wait until December...and to add intrigue to anticipation, our first December issue won't be out until December 6th! This also gives you plenty of time to tell your friends about TNNW...feel free to give them the gift of TNNW as well (it makes a great stocking-stuffer).

Now, I know what you're saying...December 6th...that's 2 weeks away! Aren't you a weekly publication? Yes and no...as always, TNNW comes out four times a month. Conservatism: What Lies Ahead

The release of Sarah Palin's memoir this week marks the latest skirmish in a fierce ideological battle among conservatives. Who will fill the GOP power vacuum and lead conservatism forward? What will this new movement look like? And what's really going on with those "Tea Parties"? We asked politicians and prognosticators, and we're posting their answers all this week in our new series: "The Future of Conservatism."

"Keep Your Mouth Shut" On Social Issues

...And focus, focus, focus on economic policy. It's the advice a mentor once gave former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, and it's the advice Armey repeated to today's Republicans in his Big Think interview. He also discussed the Tea Party movement and weighed in on Palin's 2012 chances, accusing John McCain's 2008 campaign team of having potentially "sabotaged" their VP candidate's political future.

Having said all of this, the following fabulous management and leadership ideas can be gleaned from his otherwise austere, slightly-embittered presentation, and I would strongly advise every leader or manager of any enterprise or entity to read these pointers, and to implement them:

1. You must focus on the most important and pressing issues of the moment, and especially upon those perceived as crucial by your audience. You must be relevant, direct and extraordinarily focused;

2. Avoid discussing your social views, political views, reformist agenda, political ideology, exual preferences and other ideological ideals...they will obscure your focus, distract your audience, and possibly serve to polarize and otherwise united group;

3. Demonstate an understanding of the issues, and state your proposed actions concerning those issues. Avoid empty dogma, and pep rally tactics;

4. Be serious about the issues, and do not minimize them or trivialize them. To do so is to denigrate and despise your audience;

5. Conduct yourself as a manager, a leader and a commander -- address and tackle issues head-on, without waffling or generalizations. Do not allow yourself to be de-railed, or bogged down with questions. You must remain on course, and in control of your presentation and your own impulses to insult or fight back. Be assertive -- do not be hostile or openly aggressive.

6. Be consistent and coherent in your speech. Witty retorts and a great social presence will not instill confidence in your ability to lead -- they will detract. You are not showing comedic wit -- you are demonstrating intelligence, concern, command and a inspired leadership. The vast majority of your audience wants to hear a problem-solving leader, and not just a personality;

7. Translate the issues and your prosposed course of action to the ultimate impact that it will have on the members of your audience personally...real-world, real-time, candidly;

8. Don't campaign negatively against those who are your competitors, opposers, detractors or adversaries. Put your understanding of the issues and your intended actions as a courageous leader first. Slanderous assautlts on the enemy are not powerful enough -- you must be a positive force force for meaningful change where the most pressing issues are concerned.

9. Don't try to be a celebrity - it belittles you and your audience. And worst of all, they will stop taking you seriously and will begin to question your motives for being in (or for seeking) a position of great power and authority.

10. At the end of your presentation, in stacatto fashion, briefly outline the most important issues, what you propose to do about them and give plausible estimated timeframes if possible. End with a positive "Now, let's down to the serious business of taking positive action and moving aggressively ahead in the right direction. Always end on the positive

It’s a crazy tough world out there and women networkers in the technology field in Canada now have a new group to network with. Called Wired Women, the organization is a new networking group that focuses in on helping women in the technology field grow their business, their networks or their careers and it has now has branches open now in Toronto and Vancouver.

Network, educate and mentor are three words that have guided the volunteer networking group Wired Woman since its inception and symbolize and remain the pillars of the organization.

Wired Woman’s mission is to create an environment that encourages women to explore opportunities in technology, science and new media and to build successful careers that will allow them to become a driving force in these expanding sectors.

If you are finding it a challenge to meet people in the technology, science and new media sector then Wired Women helps you network. The group’s intention is to attract as many talented, interesting women in technology as possible, to grow our community and to provide forums for everyone to interact without the barrier of an annual fee.

At regular events, seminars and social functions Wired Women provides members and volunteers with real opportunities to gain exposure to an industry that otherwise can seem intimidating and confusing. It helps women to grow their network, meet interesting people and make lifelong connections.

Wired Woman also runs regular workshops, seminars and events to educate and empower women in the technology sector. We also provide training, support and resources to help our members learn more about the many opportunities available.

Volunteering for Wired Woman also provides an opportunity for members to gain hands on experience, add to their resumes and to learn more about their industry.

The mentoring comes in when you need help crafting your career path or for someone to talk to who is in the industry? Wired Woman members are invited to apply to join a 6-month mentorship program. Aimed at women entering or re-entering the work-force, it is designed to help women who need career guidance.

Mentors meet with mentees at least one hour, monthly, for the duration of the mentoring relationship. This career mentorship experience is enhanced with networking events and education workshops.
