We got lucky and managed to get tix to see Jenny Lewis at the sold out WEX show a few weeks ago. I've seen rilo kiley a bunch of times but this was my first time seeing Jenny solo. Her band was sensational, the crowd loved it, and she even treated us to a couple new tracks. One being 'Big Wave' which she described as a song about California & Lindsay Lohan, and this track called 'Just Like Zeus'.

Before She opened for Sufjan, or toured as a member of the Polyphonic Spree, Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) was a student crafting her skills at Berklee School of Music. I recently came across a 3 song EP that Clark self-released in 2003 titled 'Ratsliveonnoevilstar' (all one word [I believe] - it's a palindrome - read the same from back to front). Other Berklee students back her on the release, including jazz bassist Mark Kelley and drummer Walker Adams.

Here's the complete EP. It's an early indication of the great vocal/guitar arrangements later found on 'Marry Me'.

Throw Me the Statue quietly released a new ep this past Tuesday called Purpleface.

Purpleface features three brand new songs - "Ship," "Honey Bee," "That's How You Win" - and a reworking of the Moonbeams cut, "Written In Heart Signs, Faintly." The EP's standout track, "Ship," is an understated yet inventive gem that offers the listener yet another glimpse of Reitherman's prowess and range as a songwriter.

Scott & the guys are busy recording the follow up to great 'Moonbeams' with producer Phil Ek. Look for it sometime later this year.

Laura Gibson is set to release her latest effort on February 24th, called 'Beasts Of Seasons'. Laura wrote many of the songs from a house that overlooked the mossy tombstones one of Portland's oldest cemeteries. Many friends dropped by to lend a hand including Adam Selzer, Rachel Blumberg, & The Decemberists' Nate Query. Mostly recorded live to 16 tracks, there's a sense of urgency to the record that is instantly appealing.

Oh, and the killer album art is from artist Evan B Harris. Be sure to check out more of Evan's work here.

Bill Hicks on Letterman

On October 1st, 1993 comedian Bill Hicks performed on the Letterman show, but the performance was cut out of the broadcast. A few months later Hicks died of pancreatic cancer. Last night Letterman invited Bill Hicks' mother on the program apologizing for censoring it 15 years ago and then aired the complete performance.

Would Leno ever do anything like this?? Never. Dave Rules.
