I agree that even though they may not always be overt in their appreciation, when an adult takes time to reach out to them, it impacts them. Maybe now. Maybe later.Paulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16995262723350443110noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31658695.post-1166662036454814762006-12-20T19:47:00.000-05:002006-12-20T19:47:00.000-05:00I too work with Boys & Girls Clubs of America but ...I too work with Boys & Girls Clubs of America but I'm new to the BGCA movement. Regardless... for the past 20+ years I've worked in the field of youth development. As we all know and understand it is the seed that is planted in these young minds in opportunities like this. One young mind may have heard you loud and clear although it didn't register on their face at the time of your presentation. What you did was a good thing. Every Club appreciates the time volunteers spend sharing talents and experiences. It all matters. Let me say thanks for the child who didn't, but may benefit in life because of the time you gave that day.Maryhttp://www.bgca.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31658695.post-1166116820664189152006-12-14T12:20:00.000-05:002006-12-14T12:20:00.000-05:00Nice piece. I, too, speak to teens about writing and reading and teach them basic journalism. I get some of the same responses as you received when speaking to teens. (But there is a teen there who is mildly autistic who was an eager student of writing who is a member of those particular Clubs in Greater Washington. I'm sure he appreciated it.)
I'm glad that you were understanding of the challenges socially (some were just there because they were told to come) and daily (predictably tired from a day of school)some of these teens were up against that day when you spoke. A great number of our teens are truly wonderful and eager students. Thanks for the time you spent with them.
If you want to do something really easy on a national level and reach hundreds of thousands through our Web site (www.bgcayouthnet.org), just let me know. We would love to have you and get you a tailored audience who want to hear your message. E-mail me at ksims@bgca.org or call me at 404-487-5860.
Thanks,
KelvinAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
