At last the news you have all been waiting for, badges have arrived, pin on or sew on, take your pick, or better still why not have both. So please get your orders to us so you can display the Northern with pride, at all the agricultural shows this summer. I am sure that the there are many white coats out there with tatty, old badges, faded in the wash, so act now and wear one with pride.
People who are acting now are Andy, Kathy and family from Megabucks stud, going BOB with a stunning Marten Sable at the Scottish club show, making him a quadruple champion. Keeping the Scottish flag flying are Polly and Bruce from Cinabun stud, making their two Chinchillas single and double champions, and finally Harry Bell, Goyt Valley stud, making his two Himalayans single champions. Well done to you all, and you don’t have to have a stud name to register a champion.

Quiet around the shows in our area, it’s a struggle to find shows with dwarf judges. I know that this view upsets people. It seems that you have to be on lots of panels to get judging engagements, so over to you dwarfs judges now, you have to be proactive, contacting secretaries to offer your services. The Lancs and Cheshire (the friendly circle) have offered Russell Smith the chance to judge, he will have done the deed by the time you are reading these, I hope you have all supported him.

June Notes

A brill entry at Carlisle, thanks to everyone who entered, there were lots of non area members showing, how much we welcome the support of people from out of the area, at our very friendly club. Carlisle is a long way for some members, but it is within our area boundary, which has been there for many many years, and just like Germany without the Berlin wall, there is nothing to stop exhibitors from other clubs, who are not members, crossing the boundary and exhibiting their dwarfs. And what you have remember is the exhibitors in Carlisle have a long way to travel to the other venues, but they do. Kevan did his usual efficient job behind the judging table, as did all three judges, juggling with the same rabbits, ensuring the day ran smoothly. Our BIS was Lillop Stud with a cracking Chinchilla adult, a new winner for the Northern let’s hope it is the first of many. In the National, Deanna Williams, not sure what stud name she is this month!!!, only joking Deanna, took all before her with a wonderful under 5 months Marten Sable, well deserved after the support she gives all the area and National clubs, no matter which area they are. Russell had everything in order in the catering department, even to the extent of a stunning cake, adorned with famous rabbits, to celebrate the National and the Northern holding their shows there. That is what showing is all about, competition with friendship. Hope to see you all out and about at the shows, the next stock show is the Lancs and Cheshire in June at East Lancs, with the aforementioned R Smith behind the table, we will be there even though we are not members, even though it is a long way cos we nearly live in East Anglia now!

Help Raise funds for Diamond Show.

Its not long till our diamond show, a couple of years, but it will be here quicker than we realise.

After the AGM in November , a few of us discussed ways of raising funds, and this one was my idea, so I thought I would give it a go.

One way to raise funds is to partner with Amazon, Argos and a few other companies like pet Planet.

If you buy books, or music from Amazon, and I know many of you do, then if you click our link in the right margin on the home page , and then buy from amazon, we get 5% of the purchase price in commission. It does not cost you extra, and you still benefit from all the discounts Amazon provides, we just get credit for directing you there!

We have raised a few pounds last year to cover the cost of the website hosting etc, and this year is already looking good. We have around £20 commisison from a few orders. So remember us when you need to buy from Amazon.

November 2008 Notes

Northern Dwarf.
Over 100 at our YSS, can’t remember the last time we had such an entry, many thanks for all your support. Congratulations to John and Carole Fletcher taking BIS with a stunning Black Otter, we were best under 14 with a Siamese sable. John also went best in the adult support show with a REW, and Simon Beynon headed the field in the yearbred show with a very nice marten sable, not forgetting best Junior, Rheanne Sleightholme, well done to you all, and to all the other winners. It was great to give Ken a good turnout of dwarfs, after the very poor turnout two years ago. Ken has decided to bid a fond farewell to his judging after this show, so thanks for all your efforts behind the table Ken, it was nice that you could go out with a bang and it has been a pleasure to show under you all these years. Thanks to the stewards and to Rheanne on the book. Welcome to the new members that joined us at the YSS and congratulations to Rheanne and Hannah for their championships, full details will be in the yearbook, talking of which get your stuff to Richard, he is eager to make the book even better than last year, but we need your efforts. Secretaries notes for December 2008

We begin these notes with a final final call for items for the yearbook. Richard will be able to squeeze in your article or advert if you get it to him ASAP. Don’t forget all adverts from last year will be repeated unless you tell us about your changes.

We have had a few more champions registered this year, congratulations to Hannah Copeland, Rheanne Sleightholme, Lucy Whael, Russell Smith and Gary and Deb, full details will be in the yearbook. Again it isn’t too late to add your champions, if you get the details to me I will do the necessary.

One that does deserve a special mention id the famous Blue Eyed Buck, “Tom”, belonging to Waggledance Stud, a supreme champion. It is very difficult to achieve such status, and there have only been a handful before him. Well done to Richard and Rachel. Here is a competition for you, how many have there been and can you name the rabbits and the owners. A special prize is on offer at Bradford championship show for the first person to answer correctly.

Stock shows for next year are not finalised as I am writing these so watch this space, they will of course be in the year book.

Finally thanks for all your support this year, let’s hope for an even better year next year, see you all at Bradford, where we will be trying to win the stand competition again.

Secretaries notes October 2008

Northern Dwarf.

I have to begin these notes with some very sad news, the passing of two gentlemen, George Rhodes, a major force in the starting of the Northern Dwarf, having held every position within the club. George was President when Deb and I were asked to become secretaries, and was a major force in guiding the Northern to where it is today. Not only was he a wonderful official for the club but a wonderful friend. Secondly, David Buckland, a quiet man from Hull, a true gentleman and a regular supporter of our club. Sincere condolences to their families.
I hope that you have enjoyed the YSS, with the extra show added this year, I hope we can make it a regular thing so let’s hope the entry was good.
We have lots of members requesting stock so please advertise what you have for sale, the only way to move the fancy forward is to make good stock available.
Our ASS is just around the corner at East Lancs where the “Burnley Brusier” and “Red Devil Ross” will have everything under control. We are in conjunction with the Lancs and Cheshire, who have a magnificent judge!! So 3 CCs on offer for each rabbit, sounds like a good deal to me.

Success for Northern Members at Sandbach Original Show.

A contingent, of Northern Dwarf members braved the seasonal weather and travelled the great distance to the Sandbach Original show in Warmingham. A warm welcome was made, and the hall was packed out with enthusiasts from the length and breadth of the country. The Lancashire and Cheshire Dwarf Circle were there, with the Midland dwarf club.

As usual the organizers of the event had been really busy and organized a really great day. Everything ran like clockwork, the Car parking attendants at the gate directed the traffic, the girls in the canteen made tea by the gallon, the secretaries sorted out the mountain of paperwork and took the monies. The Bacon Butties (Sandwiches for our American cousins) were fantastic, how much Bacon you get through at an event like this is anyone’s’ guess!

The hall was full of laughter, good banter, old friends met up having not seen each other for a years and picked up conversations as if they had only seen each other yesterday.

As time marched on, lunch was served, Salads, pies sandwiches, apple pie and custard (For our overseas readers, custard is wonderful, you’ll like it).

The main event came and a hushed silence descended on the hall. The winners were announced. Out of an entry of over 800 we had 2 significant winners, Kevin Farnsworth came in 5th overall, and Deb Hodson 10th. I met up after the event to congratulate the winners.

I spoke to Kevin, who was obviously overjoyed by his sudden and un-expected win, as his winning number was announced - silence descended on the hall. you could hear the murmurs from the back of the hall, "Well it must be after me, 'cause I have 200 ",. Then a Shriek an almost inhuman cry", "Its mine" A crowd gathered all clambering for a look at the winning ticket, he was held aloft by his team mates, punching the air in victory, whooping with delight, tears of joy streamed down his face as years of bitter disappointment suddenly came to the surface.

Hours later after the celebrations, had subsided I had a chance to meet with our winners. I congratulated Kevin on his first win for many years and asked him how this momentous occasion came to be.

"I entered 15 in all" he said, " I had 5 in the Bright Pink Class, or is it Fuchsia? Then 5 in the Orange, and another 5 in the Puce".

"As the first winner was announced, you could feel the tension in the room, the hushed quiet, the dirty looks given to those who continued to speak when the compare had started to speak"

" and then , before I knew it the 5th winner, 207 on the pink was announced", pausing to compose himself before continuing his story. " I thought it rang a bell , I looked through my numbers, but my palms were sweating, I couldn't flick though my entry fast enough my fingers felt like thumbs, my stomach churned, then - there it was, the last number. It shone like a Golden ticket in a Wonka bar."

"After that it was a blur, I found myself at the prize table, I had been carried over the heads of the crowd toward the stage, and had to select my prize , The Whiskey had gone, and the Car Polishing kit, but then I saw it was still there. Hidden behind the '200 Greatest TV moments Trivia book' I could see the roundness of it, the glint of silver and blue it was the tin of Cadburys Roses"

I left Kevin Clutching his prize, no one could persuade him to open it. "Its for Christmas he said".

Our other great winner was Deb Hodson. 10th out of an entry of over 800 is not bad. Deb Clutched her Doll, the final prize on the table, the previous winner could not decide between that and the "Original English Lavender Soap set", but Deb was delighted with her win. "I've been coming here for over 10 years, and haven't won anything" she said, " but it just goes to show that dedication, patience and buying loads of tickets , and anyone can win.”

After the draw, people started to say their goodbyes, promising to meet again here next year. Mad boasts about how well they will do.

We all left about half past four in the afternoon.

The club also held a rabbit show to raise funds for next year’s event.

I hope you have all returned your ballot papers, and enjoyed the newsletter, a bit different and keeps you aware of what is going on in the Northern. The YSS is only a week or so away, lets hope for a bumper entry, I know it clashes with London, my fault, but I hope it doesn’t affect us too much, but I will miss my kebab at 3 o’clock in the morning. Let’s hope the London committee move the show back to October then it won’t clash with the young stock shows and there will be dwarfs not full of moult and therefore left at home. We are looking for venues in the Northern area for our stock shows next year, so can you please let us have your ideas so we get the venues sorted.

Once again thanks to Richard we are having a calendar, ready for the ASS making it the ideal Christmas present for someone. I must remember to turn the page from May!
We really do need your adverts and articles for the yearbook, last years advert will be repeated unless you tell Richard of the changes that you need, unlike most footballers once you are in a contract with us it is permanent.

Time for a mid year review

End of May so how about a mid year review….

January was Bradford Championship show at its new permanent venue, Harrogate, I enjoyed judging, Barry and myself picked Trevor’s Marten Sable as our best from a very strong field. Around the stand business was brisk, our stand taking third place in the competition, many thanks to Rachel and Richard for their ideas and work to put the stand together. It was like a January sale, calendars were selling like “dates” at Christmas, and we took more members than we have for nearly 10 years. Our new website was launched, once again thanks to Richard, it is superb, www.northerndwarf.org and very popular overseas, welcome to our new American members, hope you like the calendars.

February; to York for our Presidents show, Deanna Williams doing the honours for us. Another good entry, Remlap stud taking top honours with a cracking otter, also going best in the open show, how’s that for consistency in judging.
March saw the website move from strength to strength, on line subs now possible, and this saw another batch of new members, we had to have more yearbooks printed.

April saw our Intermediate show at Bury and Radcliffe, Ros Waring picking Nigel Atkinson’s REW as her best, and what a beauty it looked. Lucy Wheal continuing her winning ways in the Juniors, Colin Bothamley out of hospital for the day penned a stunning under 5 month black otter going best in the open show, the script couldn’t have been written any better.

Advertise for free

For paid up members of the Northern Dwarf, a new free service is being launched. You can advertise your spare stock for free via this site.

Whether you are selling top quality show rabbits, or just pet dwarf bunnies (or bunny) then this is the place to advertise. As we know that all members who sell stock will promote the club and over time this will bring in new members. Remember if you can recruit a new member the club will benefit.

The site is getting plenty of visitors. Email your advert to forsale@northerndwarf.org Don't forget to email when they are sold, and I can mark the advert as sold. You can also phone me, Richard Garforth. The number is in the Yearbook

Your advert should include the following information.

Your Name and contact details.

Your rough geographic region, "Barnsley, South Yorkshire" for example.

The description of what is on offer, a picture of the Rabbit is always good.

The quality and sex of the rabbit.
