Some of the best coaches in SJS, NCS, and CCS will be at this Round Table. Don't miss out.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROUND TABLE. KEEP READING!

November 22, 2009

Dear Coaches,

Now that cross country season is nearly in the books and the track & field season looms on the not-so-distant horizon, we would like to invite you to join us for a clinic unlike any other in the state of California.

On January 9th, 2010, we will be hosting The NorCal Distance Coaches Collaborative Round Table in Hillsbrough at Crystal Springs Uplands School. The event is scheduled to kick-off at 9am and will be attended by many of the finest coaches from our part of the state. This clinic is unique in format and conception.

Many of us have attended clinics over the years, and although we have been lucky enough to hear some great speakers, the part most of us look forward to is the aftermath—sitting around with your peers, swapping stories, discussing training ideas, asking questions, all while enjoying some good food and drink.

We have decided to get rid of the lectures and ditch the conventional while getting straight to the good stuff—some high-energy shop talk with some of our sport’s finest coaches in a relaxed environment full of friends and soon-to-be friends. At this event, the attendees will choose the topics. Whether you want to rehash the last cross country season or talk about the track season ahead, you tell us and we will put it on the agenda.

Limited to the first 60 coaches to sign-up via email, this round table discussion is completely based on the contributions of all attendees. Here is how it works:

1. Coaches are asked to email Chris Puppione (cvpuppione@yahoo.com) to sign-up for the event.

2. Upon receipt of your email, Chris will ask you to submit the following for the clinic by December 22, 2009:
a. Topics and ideas you would like to discuss or gain knowledge about at the clinic (training, recruiting, nutrition, state of the sport, etc.)
i. This is an absolute necessity, as these suggestions will function as our agenda for the day.
b. A 1-3 page installment (or “nugget of knowledge”) describing something you do with your athletes that you feel is key to your program’s success (i.e. a particular workout, coaching philosophy, mental training, etc.)
i. All coaches are expected to contribute with this—consider it your entrance fee!
ii. These “nuggets” will be compiled and all attendees will receive the full collection of notes at the clinic.
c. Any copies of your training plan or training notes from the past cross country season or the upcoming track season.
i. While this is optional, coaches can submit these so that they may be shared with other attendees for review, critique, and to foster discussion of training methods.
ii. By submitting your training ideas or plans in advance, we will be able to produce copies for review at the round table—you can have your season’s training impacted by some of our sport’s greatest coaches, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.

3. A running tally of coaches who commit to attending the round table will be maintained on Albert’s website (www.crosscountryexpress.com) so everyone can prepare any specific questions that they may have for their fellow coaches.

4. Prior to the event, Chris and Albert will release a schedule that will outline the topics for the day so that each coach attending may come prepared to participate and contribute.
a. THERE ARE NO LECTURERS AT THIS EVENT. We are not presenting a seminar—this is an opportunity to expand the discussion and for everyone to be a student and a teacher.
b. Attending coaches are encouraged to bring any information they wish to discuss or share to the event. We will have overhead projectors, LCD projectors, as well as AV equipment—bring it all.

5. Sign-in on January 9th will begin at 8:30am with the round table beginning promptly at 9am. We will section the day into topics picked by our attendees, break for lunch at noon, and then reconvene for further discussion starting at 1pm. The round table ends when either you go home or they kick us out of the building at 3pm.

6. While this is an open discussion, we have designated the following coaches as leaders for the event:
o Chris Puppione – Clinic Co-Director
ß Miramonte High School
o Albert Caruana – Clinic Co-Director
ß Crystal Springs Uplands School

These coaches will act as guides for the discussion, keeping the round table focused while moving the group through the agenda and moderating input from all coaches. They will offer their insights as well, but they are not clinicians or panelists.

7. On the day of the event, all attending coaches will receive the following:
a. “A Packet of Nuggets”—a compilation of coaching gems from all attendees
b. Great conversation with amazing colleagues

It is our belief that this collaborative round table will be of great benefit for all coaches—rookies and veterans alike. Please join us for this amazing event by emailing your registration to Chris Puppione (cvpuppione@yahoo.com).

Be a part of the excitement—be a part of the conversation. Join us January 9, 2010 at Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, CA for The 2nd Annual NorCal Distance Coaches’ Collaborative Round Table.

Yours in running,

Chris Puppione
Albert Caruana

Update on Tim Bruder

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of Tim Bruder.

I've just recieved news from Roberta Chisam regarding Tim's memorial plan:

"Thanks for all the kind words and fond memories from each of you. In
his email to me he writes:

"We will keep you posted on the plans for a memorial. At this point there
will not be any formal funeral. Most likely there will be a memorial at
Alhambra High School in the coming weeks. The family plans to spread his
ashes this spring at one of his favorite camping sites.

Tim's three loving sisters are making all his arrangements"

I will keep everyone updated as I get more information. I am trying to get
an address for anyone wishing to send a letter of sympathy to Tim's Family.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Aaron Ford
Hy-Tek Certified Training Contractor/Brickyard Race Director
[ aford@alhambratrack.com we chat with Petaluma senior runner, Isabel Andrade. This past Saturday, she made it 2 for 2 when it comes to NCS individual titles as she repeated as NCS Division III cross country champion in her 2nd year in the sport. She will also be joined by her teammates as the Petaluma girls qualified for their first state meet as a team. Andrade also qualified for the CA State Track and Field last year as she finished 5th at the NCS Meet of Champions but dipped under the At-Large mark with a time of 4:56.29.

1. Who inspired you to get started in running and when did you start running?
I guess I would have to say my dad in some ways because I always want to make him proud, and he loves to run. He ran with me ever since I was little for fun.

I ran in seventh grade as a sprinter, and then started running distance in track my freshman year. I started xc my junior year.

My best friend Andie also inspires me to run everyday because of her amazing dedication and heart!
2. What sports have you participated in besides cross country and track and field?
I played soccer from first to sixth grade, it was a lot of fun. I played tennis with my dad some, and football with "the guys" in elementary and volleyball whenever I get a chance, but I don't know if that counts. haha

3. When did you first realize that xc and track could be the two sports for you?
It's to say. I think I realized it in bits and pieces, I don't think there was one defining moment for me. I just started liking it more and more.

4. What was your first success you achieved in running at the high school level?
To me, my first success was when I felt like our team this year had an amazing season. Not just as athletes, but as a group of girls who all cared for each other and had a blast at practice (or wherever we went). At our awards night we were all crying like babies (probably mostly me, haha) looking back on the season, it was an amazing moment, I hadn't really realized how much I'd had impact on them.

5. What are your proudest achievements in xc/track in the past four years?
I would probably say all of the good times I have had. I also really liked MOC last year when I broke my mile time of 5.07 to 4.56. It was so cool, I couldn't believe it.

6. Favorite xc race? Favorite xc course? Favorite competitor (s)? Favorite workout? Favorite run?
-They are all pretty great in their own ways. I really like the races with lots of people though, because of all the adrenaline. -Ed Sias, I loooove finale hill! It is so great. -I don't really know if I could pick out one person, but I do like it when my assistant coach paces me on some workouts for fun. -I love this one hill workout we do at Putnam (our home course) where we just get to charge up this hill repeatedly. It's amazing. -My favorite runs are medium length ones, and in the rain!!:)

7. What do you feel are your key workouts for you during xc that let you know that you are fit and ready to achieve great things?
Tempo and thousands. :)
8. Tell us a little about Coach Lynch and what he has meant to you as a person and athlete.
It's a good thins you put "a little" because I could really go on forever about what an amazing coach he has been. As a person he has been inspirational because he has lead such a great life. He has focus and dedication, and his passion for the sport is visible everyday at practice. He cares so much about us and it makes us all want to do our best not only for ourselves, but for our amazing coach. :)

9. Do you feel like the success for the boys helped inspire the girls to reach their first state meet as a team?
Yes! Seeing their hard work and dedication all pay off really made us want that too! We are so glad we get to go state as a team!

10. How close are you to making your college choice and how much will running influence that decision?
I am still torn at the moment, but running is definitely a big part as far as a great coach and team go! I am so excited for college!

11. What would be your advice for a young runner who has aspirations to improve their running and be successful in xc and track?
Well I would say they are already off to a great start! If they are into running and have aspirations to do well, then they definitely will! I would tell them that the beauty of running lies in how simple it is. You get out of it what you put into it. So run hard!
(also, summer running and winter training are a mustt. don't forget your shoes at practice, get a watch, and HAVE FUN!!!!) hahaha

12. Anything else you would like to add.
I am so glad that I started to run and I would encourage anyone who doesn't feel like they are good enough or are afraid of racing to remember that these things take time. You get better and less nervous the more you run!
God bless, and Happy Thanksgiving!!! :)

Thank you very much Isabel! In the comment section below, pick who you think are the 10 best teams and place them in order. The Hayward HS (NCS)course and the Crystal Springs (CCS) course are fairly comparable in time in that they are about 20 seconds faster than the Woodward Park course. The Willow Hill Reservoir course used in the SJS meet is approximately 30-40sec slower than Woodward for the boys. University coach, Jim Tracy, one of the most successful coaches in NCS and state meet cross country history. He's seen here on the far left side of the picture with his '09 NCS championship boys' team from yesterday's NCS Meet of Champions. His girls' team also collected an NCS title (by the narrowest of margins over College Prep) to go along with their amazing total of championships won in previous years. That total includes 6 state championships for his girls, the most for a girls team in state meet history.

1. How did you get your start with running?
I showed up at Riordan H.S. in San Francisco fall of '64. High School was a super new experience and after one week my best friend said let's do cross country, they have to race two miles. I thought he was crazy but we tried out, made the team and thus was the beginning of four years of c.c. and track and field. It was a fantastic era of bay area running talent full of memorable rivalries. I had excellent teammates and Riordan prospered.

2. Tell us a little about your own running from high school to now.
After h.s., I ran at city college of San Francisco and a few small meets at the University of California from which I graduated in '73.

I took a year off from running then began to establish a pattern of training that would accommodate being a working adult. This fluctuated quite a bit as jobs changed, hair fell out, and the running scene began an astonishing surge into mainstream society. By the 1980's, I had finally trained enough to be a better runner and competitor.

3. How did you get into coaching?
At this time I would volunteer some advice to other adults in the excelsior running club and continued learning from their efforts,
I ran through the 80's and was basically an adults' coach.

Finally in the 90's, a good friend of mine, Mike McManus, asked me to join him at university h.s. in San Francisco as his new job and family commitments were such that if u.h.s were to grow and maintain his standards he needed help. Mike and I coached together for three years and thus the groundwork for more success was strengthened. Upon his departure, I remained at u.h.s. and have worked with several assistants since. My present staff is very talented.

4. Who were your coaching mentors then and now?
My very first coach in H.S., Rich Kenneally was a super guy and showed me a lot about how good coaching could enhance kids lives.

At city college I met Lou Vasquez, a fine technical coach who gave me greater knowledge and a desire to learn even more.

Later, I attended a lecture by Arthur Lydiard , a very remarkable man and teacher.

Finally, I have subscribed to Track and Field News for many years and that combined with great conversations with a friend, Robert Darling, I have continued to gain knowledge and perspective on people and athletics.

5. Where else have you coached besides SF University? How long have you been at UHS?
This is my 16th season at San Francisco University high school. Thanks to encouragement from the athletic dept., parents, and supporters of running in general the program there has been a pleasure to direct. The kids have been wonderful and I cherish all my memories of the diverse and talented athletes who have graced my teams with their presence.

6. Might be a little difficult to add them all up but how many NCS championships do your boys have? girls? state meet plaques for girls? boys?
As for winning, yes we like to do it and will continue to do so at every opportunity. Our opponents are talented, the racing worthwhile and our goals of excellence always before us.

Now in my 16th season, the UHS girls have won 12 league championships, 11 section titles, and have 6 state wins plus three seconds. They have also won at least once, every cross country invitational we have entered.

The UHS boys have won 16 league titles, 11 sections, and have been second twice at the state championship and third 5 times. In 13 years at state they have never been worse than sixth.

7. What do you feel have been the keys to success at University during cross country season? How does track factor into the xc success?
The teams succeed because young people have talent, parents encourage them, schools structure them, and I would yell at them if they did not! Seriously, I apply all the knowledge I have gained and demand that they take the chance for success and never fear failure. enjoy vicariously their victories as I remember the opportunities in racing that enhanced my life.

8. What are you expectations of your runners during the summer in preparation for the season?
Summer program: go to a good camp, run with your friends and stay healthy. Remember, the trip to the state meet in Fresno really begins before the school year begins and the joy of the trip never ends.

9. What do you feel are the key workouts for your team during the season? Late season?
Key workouts: I conduct a low mileage, interval speed based program with plenty of races that is supported by adequate stretching, rest, good attitudes, and supportive coaches. Run a variety of intervals on cc terrain controlling the volume and rest cycle and let each athlete reach a level that reflects their talent and interest level.

10. What do you feel are the important points in running well at the state meet on the Woodward Park course?
We go to the state meet every year so we always know the course pretty well. It is an excellent course. Recipe for success-for heavens sake its late November, you've trained all season. Run smart the 1st mile. Measure yourself and opponents the 2nd, and don't give anything back on the third. By all means, when your foot hits the last grass stretch to the finish line, you had better already be sprinting!!!

11. What would be your best advice to a young coach, starting out and with ambition to run a great cross country program?
If you are a new coach, expect to learn from the kids as well as teach them. Keep records, know what you've done so that training is logical and explainable. Give the kids a program they can understand and enjoy, and never ask a veteran opposing coach advice before a big race as we will always lie to you. You'll always enjoy the big win and there is always something to learn from a tough loss.

12. Anything else you would like to add.
Thank you Albert for your interest. It is great to be a cross country coach in Calif. and to compete in the incredible North Coast Section. So many fine coaches and storied programs.

Thank you very much for your time Jim!
