Do you trust ME now?

So if you have a TV and turn it on even once in a while you've probably seen the Verizon commercial where the guy has a cell phone and takes it to weird places and says "Can you hear me now?" Well the other night I went to the Haven (kind of the local newman center) for praise and worship. As we sang the first couple of songs like "Blessed be Your Name" and "Everlasting God" I had this distinct picture in my head. It was Jesus showing up at different points of my day and life saying the phrase "Do you trust Me now?" in a way very reminiscent of the commercial.

God often uses humor to speak to me and at first I did think it was funny thinking..."very cute, God...I get it, I get it." But then as I thought about it I got a little bothered by it. "Lord, haven't I lived my life in a way that says I trust You? Haven't I given up much for You...to spread your Gospel...to sing your praise? I've moved across the country more than once to be where I thought You wanted me. I've lived on next to nothing at times and I haven't regretted a minute of it. Are You still really asking me this question and bringing about circumstances in my life to prove my answer?"

Yes, I was being a bit of a whiner. Things at Reach are crazy right now and one big trust activity at the moment. We need more team members, more money, more staff to get all the work done and we have to relocate the ministry after training/by the beginning of October. This on top of the things I have going on in my own life makes me think...enough already! Enough is what my weary spirit is saying as I try to be strong and believe.

So the question from Jesus, "Do you trust Me now?" is quite appropriate. I just didn't realize I needed to be reminded that He is trustworthy. He will take care of us. He has a plan even if I can't see it. Even when I don't feel like it's true it is true. I really do believe that.

So my answer to Jesus' question, "Do you trust Me now?" is "yes, Lord, of course I do. You have not failed me yet. You have always made good on Your promise... "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

If anyone is actually reading this please keep Reach in your prayers. Pray Rosary's for us if you can. Pray we would be open to the solutions God will send our way. Pray that we will grow in faith and that this time of chaos will end soon. There are young people out there who need to hear the good news Christ offers them...this is what we want to be about come training in August.

As another year ends...

It's always a strange time of year for me. I definitely feel a little sad and know I'm going to miss the Reacher's that won't be close by anymore. But there is also this knowledge that as soon as they leave we are getting ready for the next group who are willing to use a year or two of there life to serve God in this way.

Last week was our Discipleship Camp (the Dub...Camp & Conference...whatever you like to call it!) and it was a really different experience than I usually have. For the first time ever I was in charge of the food which was nerve racking on any levels for me! But with great help and a little grace I survived.

The parts of the camp I got to go to were few...but I did get to spend a couple times of praise and worship with the group. It was those times that I really got to watch the team members in action. Praying with others and just praying themselves...letting the Spirit touch and move them in the moment too. It just made me realize once again how proud I am to be a part of Reach. I am proud of the team members who give up so much to share Christ with these young people. I wish I were still young and cool enough to do that but alas I am not. But the fact that I get to play even a small part in their ministry by training and caring for them along the way is a privilege I would not trade at this time. God is so good and uses us and blesses us where we are at. He meets us. He loves us.

So as another year ends I know this...lives were touched by the God this year because we said yes in the best way we knew how. Not perfectly but faithfully. Please pray for the team members as they move on that they would continue to seek God, let Him love them, and stay grounded in the Eucharist.

Reach Benefit Dinner

Hi Everyone! Well, Reach is as busy as ever. This week was our
annual benefit dinner. We had 180 people come to support us
and it was a great night.

The team members worked hard to help us get ready...as you can
see from the pics. Setting up the room, washing 150 wine glasses
(twice!) and blowing up about 200 balloons! Not to mention
serving food and clearing plates all night. They worked really
hard and did a great job.

After eating a lovely meal from 901 Pasta it was on to the
program. We invited Fr. Justin Brady...a former Reacher
who is now a priest in the Diocese of Boise. It was
wonderful having him for the event. He was inspiring
and heartfelt. But personally when I think of Fr. Justin
I have a vivid memory of a karaoke night years ago where he
sang...well...performed really, a Michael Jackson song.
I'm not sure I've ever laughed harder!
Hearing him speak at the dinner though did remind me of
how thankful I am that God brought Reach into my life.
I don't know where I would be without it.

The team did their drama Faith or Not Faith...a take off
on Deal or not Deal about how you can't pick and choose
the parts of the faith you want to follow.

Finally...the highlight of the night...the Sevigny
Girls performed a medely of songs from the Sound of
music, changing the lyrics to encourage people to
donate to REACH. Who wouldn't give something
after hearing five cute girls sing these lyrics to
the tune of "DO RE MI":

Donate money, cash or check
Raise it for their room and board
Meet their needs for food and drink
Following the steps of Christ
Souls are what their going to save
Lots of cash is what they need
Teaching them the ways of Christ
That will bring us back to donate money...

Thank you to Meghan, Monica, Molly Jo,
Mary Grace, and Malia Sevigny. We appreciate you
using your talent to make our event even better.

In the end...people were generous and we are thankful
We still need more help to take Reach where we feel God
is leading us but for today I would simply like to say
"Thank You"...to all who pray for us, donate to us, and love
our teams. May God Truly Bless You.

San Diego Baby!

I just got back from visiting the Our Lady of Fatima Team in San Diego/Vista/Escondido/Ramona, CA and I had a great time. It no only was great to see them but so good to get away to the palm trees and ocean air.

In Vista we stayed with Michelle Barton's (of the Lourdes team) family and it was a real blessing. I definitely saw were she gets many of her personality traits and her tendency not to wear shoes! They were very good to us and the food was great. I wish I would have taken some pictures there but I didn't.

After that we were in Escondido with the legendary Marcial Lopez...He is now the DRE/Youth Minster at Immaculate Conception parish in Ramona. We has a retreat / St. Patricks Day celebration with his parish...this I did get pictures of!

We decorated the hall with many things green and the retreat began with a green food relay. Mint ice cream, green jello, frozen peas, and green bean baby food! Christina took one for the team and downed the baby food like a champ...and personally I thought it was disgusting! Mark Raine gave it a good try, too.
It was a fun retreat and great kids.

All in all it was great to hang out with Fatima gang. They informed me they have something like 48 days left on this trip (but who's counting?) and God is using them for His good. As He always does.

The first picture is of me and the girls at our host home in Escondido. Tom and Marianne are a wonderful couple! Thanks to all of you out there who take good care of our Reach teams.

Hi Everyone and Happy 2008! Things here at Reach have been moving right along. It's hard to believe the teams are starting the second half of the year! As I write the Our Lady of Lourdes team is in Anchorage, Alaska! I went with the team last year and it was beautiful but COLD! The Our Lady of Fatima Team is getting ready to embark on the Southwest trip. They leave Friday for Winnemucca, Nevada!! After that on to New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, California... The Our Lady of Guadalupe Team starts the second half of the year with leading a local youth group tomorrow night and after that will be doing ministry all over Washington, Oregon and the rest of the Northwest.

It's also the time of year we need to start thinking about next year's teams...please pray for us as we seek out who God is calling for next year...and pray they will be led to us! If you are interested or know someone who is download everything you need to apply HERE... We need great Catholic young adult to continue ministering to youth all over the country! It's an experience like no other...pray about it.

God's Faithfulness!

I can't believe it's already the end of October! The Holidays are right around the corner and the Reach teams have been done with training and on the road for a month now. There has been a lot of change behind the scenes (see Dan's blog for that) and the past couple months have been at time a test of faith but even more importantly a testiment to God's faithfulness. If I've learned one thing through all this it's that God wants Reach to continue. He will take care of us no matter what. I've always known that...but it's
nice to be reassured.

Though changes were happening behind the scenes the Reach teams are still doing what they have always done...proclaiming the gospel through retreat ministry. The message are teams give to the youth is important and true and God wants to love his young people through this ministry and introduce Himself in a personal way through the Reach teams.

I love it...there's nowhere I'd rather be at this time (except maybe an office with some heat!).
And our team members are extrodinary...human but striving for holiness. I hope you get to meet them along the way this year. You will be blessed.

The time has come.....

Another Reach year is ending. This marks my 6th year as a staff member and it's amazing how time flies. The end of a year is always bittersweet. Although people are ready for a change or a break (including the staff) it is never easy saying goodbye. I just want to give my love and my thanks to those team members who served this year. I have nothing but admiration and appreciation for all of you who were willing to step out and give a year (or two) of your life to share God's love with those who need it.

One of the real blessings of working here is getting to see how individuals grow in their maturity and spirituality throughout the year. I am also blessed to have laughed much and often with this group. And the opportunity to pray with them and serve them has been a privilage.

My prayers go with you all I know whatever you do in life that God will continue to use and bless you. Thank you for saying "yes" to Him.

I Need a Few Good Men!

Okay, so the title of my blog is cheesy and misleading but hey, I need to get your attention.

Reach is in need of men to apply for next years Reach teams. They don't seem to be stepping forward very quickly this year and so we are trying to get the word out about it.

I have been the recruiting coordinator at Reach for the past 6 years. I love it. I love Reach. I think if God is calling you that being on a Reach team is a life changing experience. Challenging, yes, but very rewarding.

Today we had praise and worship with the whole community. Catholic young adults praying together praising and asking God to be the center of our lives. To show us how to love and what He wants us to do. It's an amazing thing to do that with a community of young adult Catholics who are on fire for God. I think most anyone who has done Reach can attest to that.

Are we perfect? No.
Are we the most holy people in the world? Not even close.
Are we trying? Yes, everyday

That's what makes this experience unforgetable and life changing. I believe with God there is always more...more love, more peace, more joy, more knowlegde...that is what we seek as God's children.

So, if you are reading this maybe God is calling you to consider stepping out...doing something that the "world" would consider crazy or foolish...and give God this next year of your life in a unique way. We cannot out-give God. One of my favorite passages when I think of this is in Mark 10: 29-30..."I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life."

Think about it.
Pray about it.
Do not fear.
If you know someone who would be good for Reach...pray for them.
Tell them you think they'd be great for it.
Download an application and fill it out or give it to someone who should.

Pray for us as we seek people for Reach. We are still accepting applications from men and women but we especially need men.

There is work to be done!

Time has flown by....

Well I haven't posted in a while and this will probably be my only chance until after Reach Gonzaga, which unbelievably is this coming weekend!!!! Once again I am just living my life trying to get things done and time speeds up and catches me by surprise.

To catch you all up since my last blog I have been busy. Here's just a few of the things that have been happening:

The Bishop's Dinner--which was wonderful evening and a financial success for us.
We had drama day with Kristin White to learn the new dramas for Reach Gonzaga/Camp.
I got to reconnect with 2 former Reach teammates...Fr. Rob Cook and Bob Gallagher...it was such a blessing.
I led music for the youth track of a Holy Spirit Conference in Helena, MT.
I visited my folks in Great Falls for a few days.
I went to Christ the King Parish in Richland, WA (Jonny D's Lifeteen Group) to speak and promoted the Reach Camp.
I led music for the Confirmation Mass in Zillah, WA.
I stayed home from work sick for 2 days last week...And I'm still not 100%.

There. Now you know why I haven't had time to blog...and I know why I've been desiring naps more often!

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this weekend (Reach Gonzaga) a lot. We've got a good initial sign up of kids and there will be some old friends and familiar Reach faces there. I am amazingly blessed by the people God has brought into my life over there years. Now if only I were better at keeping in touch with them!

Thats all for now...I need to gear up for the next few weeks!

Easter People

"Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song."
Pope John Paul II

I found this quote last week and it really resonated with me. It made me think of the times I have thought that God just was not there. Though I don't think I have ever been in despair I have definitely felt abandoned and left to fend for myself. In those times my faith reminded me that God was with me, God is on my side, God loves me...but my prayer would often be "I believe Lord, help my disbelief."

But we are an Easter People! Our suffering has a purpose. It is not in vain. United with Christ the veil is torn and we are able to be with the Father which is the longing of my heart.

I wish now I would have been a better at taking advantage of the Lenten season but my laziness got the best of me at times. But during this Holy Week I am going to try and be open to all the richness the Church offers in reminding us of the life, suffering and death of Christ. This way when Sunday comes I will be ready to say with gratitude and hope, "Alleluia!"

I saved my soul by switching to GOD-CO!

I have been at Reach 5 1/2 years now so I have been on many retreats but mostly in and observing or a musical capacity. This past weekend we ended up putting together an "all-star team" (Fr. Auve's term, not ours) to do a Jr. High retreat down in Mt. Angel, Oregon at the Fr. Bernard Youth Center (www.fbyc.info).

For the first time since I can remember I led a Jr. High small group...which rocked! The girls from St. James Parish in McMinnville were awesome and our Christian commercial was the best!

Being on "team" with Dan, Brent Durschmidt, Maria Orias and good ol' Matt Libra was a very great experience. Thanks to them for a great weekend. It was a great reminder to me of what we ask the teams to do for 10 months of the year and reminded me in a new way of my love for sharing the Gospel through retreat ministry...it's why I'm here.

And just a little about the Fr. Bernard Youth Center...it was amazing. The chapel alone is worth going there for. The whole facility is comfortable, relaxing and a great place for a retreat. I highly recommend you check it out.

Hi Everyone! First of all I wanted to let you know that the January interview weekend went great. With the help of the Maximillian Kolbe Team and the lovely Maria we had a good weekend with the 5 who came to interview. To make a long story short...

We have already invited 6 people to come for training next year!!! And it's only the first week of February! As of now our next interview weekend is scheduled for March 30-April 1st. So if you are considering Reach or know someone who should be... now's the time to apply!

Second of all...Have you seen the ALUMNI PAGE of our website yet? If not as soon as you are done reading this highly entertaining and informational blog...take a look! Even if you were never on a Reach team you probably know some one who was.

One of the first things I did was look back at the 1987-1988 team because those were the people that came to my hometown (Great Falls, MT) and shared Christ with me in a way that changed my life forever. The way that team talked about Christ like He was a real part of their lives and not a distant diety in the clouds had a tremendous impact on me. And my small group leader...I think her name was Nicole...is someone I will never forget. Truthfully I don't remember much of what she actually said or did, but I know she a major reason why my head knowledge of God's love for me became heart knowledge...and I haven't seriously doubted that love since. There was also Ken who made me laugh and Dan who was the first person I had ever seen kneel in front of a tabernacle and worship and Mark who was probably the first person to tell me that God loved me in a way that made me want to believe it.

I am grateful for those people and all that given so much to be on the Reach Team. In the grand scheme of things there are not that many of us...but I know the impact these people have had on youth, youth ministers, priests, host families and different communities all over the country. You are all often in my prayers.

My Perspective On Alaska...

Hello All and Happy New Year if I haven't said it yet. Well, we got back from Alaska on Monday night and the trip was so fun. If I'm being honest I wasn't excited about going to Alaska...mostly because I was just being lame. I was tired after Christmas and I have an interview weekend coming up and I was letting all that get to me. Luckily, as usual, God knows more than I do and I am now so glad I went! It was actually kind of rejuvinating for me...and not just because it was so cold! Here are some of the highlights:

Craig our host and our driver in Anchorage. Playing pool and going to Moose Tooth Pizza with him.
Theresa from the Cathedral in Anchorage who took us out to breakfast and was so encouraging to us.
Megan, Jon and Jacob Wohler's in Kenai...took us to Veronica's Coffee House and Little Ski-Mo's (where Alaina ate Mobey Dick).
We saw 3 moose close up
We met Pat in Soldotna...who is orignally from Ephrata, WA and made us some great meals.
sledding and snow drifts and cross country skiing for Melissa and Fred
The cloistered convent where we got to go to daily mass and Adoration.
Some of the team ate reindeer sausage.
We took a detour to Hope on the way to Kenai.
We ate at the only Dairy Queen in all of Alaska.
We were housed with a full blooded Eskimo (Jacob Wohler)

This is just some of the fun...I had a great time with the team who put on some good retreats. If anyone in Alaska is reading this just know that we would love to come back! Here's some pictures....

Ephiphany Baby!

Well, I leave with the Joan of Arc team for Alaska tomorrow. But I also celebrated a birthday this week and wanted to share some pics of my lunch with the team. Right after this the Bosco team left for there 3 month road trip! It was fun and I am so blessed!

Happy New Year Everyone!!! I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I just wanted to share a picture of my family. My time at home was nice, although my sister was late (4 days late) because of the snow storms in Colorado. The Denver airport is now where you wanted to be on Dec 23rd.

Now I'm back in Yakima and had a really fun New Year's at the Sevigny house. There were a lot of people there for the big game tournament...and we literally jumped into the new year and fun was had by all.

Now the teams are back and they go back on the road soon. Monday I fly to Alaska with the Joan of Arc team and this month is our first interview weekend!!

Joyful Hope

"...as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ"

We hear those words every time we go to mass but live them in a special way during Advent. I've been putting up my tree, watching Christmas specials and singing songs like "O Come O Come Emmanuel" which make me long to know Christ in
a new way.

This time of year more than any other renews my hope in what God can do...even when...like in most Christmas specials, He isn't even mentioned. Even a story as simple as the Grinch or Scrooge that tells of a being that seemed hopelessly lost in all that is negative to being a new creation. Someone full of hope and love and goodness. But to me, when someone says "the Spirit of the Season", I know what, or more accurately, WHO, that means.

There is forgiveness, reconciliation, mercy, peace, love, comfort and joy! We know this because "the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1"14

Even on my "bah-humbug" days (and I've had a few lately) I know in faith that the above is true. Nothing is impossible for God. He can do anything. Even save me for myself.

So I pray that this Advent you have joyful hope in Christ and that you have a Merry Christmas with your friends and family.

Well, it's almost Advent. The beginning of a new Liturgical year and of course it's the coming of Christmas.

I've been thinking about my old Reach teams lately, the people I was in community with way back in the day! Though I have fallen out of touch with many of these people I know what an impact all of them have had on my life. Who I am and what I'm doing today really came from loving and being loved by these people. I'm not saying everyday was sunshine and puppies...I'd be lying if I did...but we were committed to trying our best to love as Christ loves. I learned how to better live my faith from their example. Plus...I think some of the times I've laughed the hardest we with these people. Some of them were crazy! In a good way of course.

Anyway...Pretty soon we will have a picture from every team year on the Alumni page but I would like to give my own shout out to them. Thinking of the times I've had with them often brings a smile to my face. Here are the pics and names. (If I know there married names I'll put them in ( ))
