The LBC at 30: looking for Men and Women of Vision

The London Buddhist Centre is the FWBO's largest and most successful Buddhist Centre. It is thirty in November and is currently in the middle of the most exciting phase since its inception. We are improving all six floors of the Centre in a building project costing over £1.5m so that we can reach out to even more people.

We are:

- creating Breathing Space, a 'mindfulness for health' centre
- creating an access from Roman Road - making the centre's work much more visible
- building a new glass-atrium entrance, thereby enlarging our reception and bookshop
- making the centre much more accessible for people with disabilities
- completely refurbishing the community on the top three floors
- providing central heating to both communities above the LBC for the first time.

The new office for the LBC team has recently opened - alongside 'The Sangharakshita Study Room' - providing a beautiful and bright new environment in what was Bhante's flat.

We are looking for men and women of vision and commitment to join us.

- play your part in an enthusiastic team of Order Members and Mitras trying to realise Bhante's vision?

The North London Buddhist Centre Sangha has created a lovely, welcoming environment in a prime location accessible to 2 million plus Londoners. We have a beautiful building and an established sangha. We offer lots of classes in dharma and bodywork and more besides.

We need a part time finance worker to join our team. The work includes day to day financial admin,(bill payments, wages, monitoring income and expenditure etc), processing gift aid tax claims, working with our book keeper to oversee the day to day data entry, working with our treasurer to produce financial reports and budget updates, and other miscellaneous responsibilities.

We are a small and friendly team. We're open to you simply taking on the financial administration. However if you wish to get involved in other aspects of the centre's work, there is plenty of opportunity for initiative and enthusiasm.

Dhanakosa is the FWBO's very beautiful retreat centre in the Highlands of Scotland.

They are currently recruiting for a Fundraising and Marketing Manager. You will be working with Nayaka (Centre Director) helping to develop fundraising and marketing strategies, and be responsible for the implementation of those strategies. This will include working with our established visual identity and image archive to produce a range of marketing and fundraising collateral, and liaising with printers and out of house designers and advisers. You will also be expected to do about 2 days a week reception and bookings supporting our Office Manager (Alasdair), and contribute to the general running of the retreat centre.

"Join a mixed team of committed Dharma practitioners and contribute to our work in raising over £1.5 million a year to help thousands of marginalised people in South Asia to transform their lives. We work with a wide range of social and Dhamma projects in India and Nepal, including many outside the FWBO and TBMSG.

Trust Fundraising Officer
You will be responsible for maintaining and developing our crucial grant income from charitable trusts and foundations, and from online donors. You will be self-motivated and ambitious, with excellent writing and computer skills. Some experience of fundraising is desirable.

Door to door appeals fundraiser and trainer (male applicants only please)
You will share the responsibility for the recruitment and training of appeal volunteers, especially men, as well as doing some fundraising yourself. You have either already proved your fundraising ability on at least two appeals, or are willing to do so, and possess a developed ability to tune into others and help them to deepen their self-awareness. You are able to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Donor Care Assistant
Acting as first point of contact between Karuna and its supporters, you will be responsible for maintaining our database of 7,000 regular donors, including the administration of standing order gifts. You will be systematic, have an eye for detail, good IT skills, and a friendly telephone manner.

Marketing Officer (2 ½ days per week)
You will be responsible for Karuna’s profile both within and outside the FWBO: at events, on the internet and in its printed publicity materials. You will be creative, a good communicator, with an eye for good design and copy.

You will receive a generous needs-based support package equivalent to about £15,000 per year for a single person (including pension contributions) as well as professional training and 8 weeks of annual leave. You will also be near to the large and vibrant London and North London Buddhist Centres, with the opportunity to live in a residential community, including the attractive Karuna men’s community.

Volunteers needed for FWBO International Retreat, May 2008

The FWBO’s first International Retreat is taking place in May, at Taraloka, in Shropshire, UK. Vajragupta is the overall organiser and is making this request for help.

"We'll need a team of volunteers to set-up, run, and set-down the event. They can obviously have a free place on the retreat and, although they will have some work duties, these won't be so heavy that they couldn't take part and enjoy it too. They will need to be available from Sunday 18th May and, after the event, until 28th May. They'd need to be willing to camp and work hard, including physical work!

"During the set-up period we plan to have some kind of retreat-like programme and teaching for them too. Again, it won't be all work!

Volunteers needed to help with FWBO News

If you’re reading this you probably know and love FWBO News. It is the main world-wide channel for communicating news of opportunities and developments within the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) and TBMSG (as the FWBO is known in India).

We aim to publish 4-5 stories every week plus occasional features and reviews, also to maintain current jobs or volunteering opportunities on our sister site FWBO Jobs.

The site is managed by Lokabandhu who lives in Glastonbury, UK. He is seeking one or more assistants to help with the editorial work of converting a raw report into a piece ready for publication. This will involve research, sub-editing, picture selection, and formatting the finished story ready for posting. There are plenty of other ways to contribute too, once a working relationship has been established. Readership is steadily growing and so are the number of stories being contributed.

You could live anywhere in the world, but would need good English, good internet access, a reasonable working knowledge of the FWBO/TBMSG – and a passion for communicating news of Dharma developments around the world to others in the Sangha.

WINDHORSE PUBLICATIONS, the FWBO’s successful publishing company, is going in new directions, seeking new ways to bring the movement’s evolving ideas into the world. With a new focus on flexibility and new sales we now seek a Publishing Assistant.

This job is a great opportunity to contribute to spreading the Dharma. It also provides the opportunity to learn about publishing through working for a small publisher where you can become involved in all parts of the publishing process, although the emphasis will be on marketing.

We are looking for someone with computer and communication skills, who is well-organised, steady and can learn quickly. Publishing experience is desirable but not required. The ideal candidate will be capable of working on their own some of the time and multi-tasking.

The job will be based in Cambridge. Hours and salary are negotiable.

Working retreat in Spain

Suratna and Vidyasri live at AMITAVATI in the Spanish mountains not far from Valencia. They are developing it as a small rural retreat centre and are inviting people to join them for a Working Retreat. They say "There will be 4-5 hours of work a day; meditation; pujas and ritual

English language teachers needed for FWBO/TBMSG projects in India and Hungary

Two of the most exciting projects at present in the FWBO/TBMSG are the Dhammakranti outreach project in India and our new contacts with the Gypsy community in Hungary.

In both cases we are making links with new and relatively deprived communities who have become interested in Buddhism, in both cases we want to respond both by offering Dharma teaching and helping them move forwards socially and economically. And so, in both cases we are launching English-language teaching projects. We are therefore seeking English teachers for both – please see below for further details.

Mitraloka School of Languages – Nagpur, India
Teachers of English are needed in the newish, small language college at Nagpur. Teachers for ‘conversation classes’ is wanted for 2-3 hours a day. Classes will be of approx 25 adults, aged 16-60. The students already read and write English, but need more confidence when speaking.

Mitraloka also offers Japanese classes, and hopes to offer Spanish, French, and Chinese – Nagpur is rapidly modernising and there is great demand for tuition in all languages.

The tutor would be provided with room and food, but would need to fund their own travel and pocket money.

Jai Bhim community – Hungary
In Hungary the newly converted gypsies need an English teacher for their school, in the north-east of the country near Tomor. The students are aged 14 upwards. Readers of FWBO News will know that this community of gipsies, through their strong feelings for Dr. Ambedkar, have converted to Buddhism, and are making stronger and stronger links with the FWBO and TBMSG - hosting visitors from the UK and India, and by themselves visiting both the UK and India.

They are now eager to improve their English, in order to learn more about the Dharma, and – very importantly - improve their chances in the job market. Like their Dhamma brothers and sisters in India, they hope to leave centuries of alienation behind and have access to a more spiritual path.

The teacher would be provided with a flat. They would need to fund their own travel and pocket money. It is hoped teachers would stay for four or five months at a time.

Besides visiting teachers, other ways to respond are being explored, such as on-line tuition via ‘Skype’ or Podcasting. If anyone is interested in these please contact us. TEFL and teaching experience are desirable but not essential in both cases - plus of course a love of the Dharma.

Windhorse Publications is moving to Cambridge at the end of the year. We need a new director to take the business forward including developing new publishing both for the movement and the general public.

The Director/ Commissioning Editor will be responsible for providing a strategic overview; liaising with the trustees, including preparing papers and reports; managing the team, including outsourced work; keeping a financial overview; creating an editorial strategy in conjunction with the editorial board and Council; commissioning authors to write, including help with structuring their books and writing style; and stock control. As usual with such a small team, there will be a need to be flexible and help with other tasks as necessary.

The trustees are looking for someone with a good business sense, who works well with others, and is capable of producing books which serve the needs of people in the FWBO and beyond. It would be desirable to have some publishing experience, but not essential, as two of us trustees have plenty of experience and can give training and support.

The FWBO European Chairs Assembly would like to recruit a fundraiser to:
* Help centres run more effective fundraising and dana economies, through offering them advice and consultancy, organising training days for their staff, and producing materials and resources.
* Devise fundraising strategies to generate income for movement-wide projects and individuals, so as to support them and also relieve the burden on central funding.
* Work with the FWBO development team on a movement-wide legacies campaign.

We’re looking for an Order member or mitra who’d like an exciting and challenging project! It may be that you do or don’t have previous fundraising experience. Either way, we are offering a generous allowance for training from the UK Institute of Fundraisers. There’s also the offer of help and mentoring from an existing professional fundraiser, making this a great opportunity to learn and develop new skills.

You’d need to be:
* Confident, out-going, and able to connect and engage with people quickly.
* Able to support and mentor those working for FWBO projects and give them confidence.
* Able to think strategically and put fundraising appeals together.
* Able to go into a new situation and suss it out fairly quickly, provide analysis and advice.
* Able to be creative and innovative.

The job is full-time, though we are open to discussing part-time or project-based work. There is a support package of up to £12K, plus a further budget for expenses and training. You’d be employed by the Indrajala Trust (the charity of the European Chairs Meeting) and would work with the chairs meeting, and also members of the FWBO Development Team.

JOB OPPORTUNITY AT EVOLUTION BRISTOL

We are looking for someone to come and join us in our Right Livelihood Business here in the Galleries in the heart of Bristol. There has been a Buddhist business here for around 10 years now and the business has over that time contributed many thousands of pounds to the Buddhist Centre, helping to support the spreading of the Dharma in Bristol. It has been a place of practice for many people over that time, Order Members, mitras and Friends, men and women.
We are looking for someone energetic, hard working and enthusiastic to join us full time, ideally from the beginning of June. This is a challenging situation, one in which there are many possibilities to grow through engaging with 'work as practice'. We need someone who can work 5 days a week including some weekends. Retail experience is useful but not essential, full training will be given. In time we would hope that you would become part of the team running the business.

The shop is part of a bigger business windhorse:evolution based in Cambridge and with other shops in various parts of the country plus one in Dublin, so you would be joining a wider Sangha of people seeking to put Buddhist ethics into practice in the world. Profits from the business go to support Dharma projects throughout the FWBO (including the Bristol Buddhist Centre) and there is now also a 'social fund' supporting projects amongst our suppliers overseas.
