Day 1107: An Opportunity to Change Your Life

Please bear with my ~~writing~~rambling as I formulate my Philosophy of Life

What's your life like?

Ever since the dawn of humanity, a huge majority of people live lives that they don't want.

In this modern age and for most people, everything is money based, it's about money - or the lack of it. What can we do? That is how we were trained ever since we walked this earth.

My pragmatic and street smart grandmother used to say that the only thing that is illegal in this country (and probably in this life) is "to not have money". Harsh but it may have a sprinkling of truth in it.

Let's take for example, travelling. Nowadays, to get from point A to point B, you either:

Commute:

1. You walk, then you ride a bus, train, tricycle, jeepney, pedicab, or motorcycle
2. You pay for the bus, train, tricycle, jeepney, or motorcycle

or you have your own car:

1. You pay for your car for 5 years
2. You pay for car registration, insurance, etc
3. You pay for gas for your car
4. You pay for parking
5. You pay the highway toll fees
6. You pay for maintenance

AN INESCAPABLE FLUX OF WHAT WE CALL OUR "LIVES"

I've got to admit, that most of my life has been spent in front of a computer. I can't help it, I love computers, but now I don't want it to be my daily activity. I guess that the same thing must be true for most of you who are reading my blog. You work in front of a computer, earn a little (or much), then when you have enough money, you spend a vacation somewhere where you have to lose all your money so that when vacation time is over, you can start work again to earn money for the next vacation.

STUCK

Are you stuck in your life?

Take heart, I know a lot of people who are "stuck" in their lives. I know a man who got separated from his wife, remarried, now has 3 kids, unemployed and now has Tubercolosis. I tried to help him. But he is stuck on his mindset of misfortune and suffering. I know a man who has 8 kids, lives in the slum, lost his job when his boss died, didn't have an education, couldn't find work now, has to feed 9 mouths (as we say here in the Philippines), and is stuck doing very odd jobs barely eating three meals a day.

Sadly, like those two guys that I mentioned, it's just a reality that most people have to bear and forget. It is what it is - our so called modern lives. The economical system that we have right now, leaves out a lot of people in the fringes.I believe that it should change, but as of the moment, I don't have any suitable alternative for it.

WAIT A MINUTE WHAT HAPPENED TO DANNYBUNTU?

You're probably scratching your head by now and you are probably asking,

"Get to the point, Dan, what are you selling? I thought this was a blog about Ubuntu and Open Source and Free Software and ..."

I'm not selling anything (at the moment, maybe later, jk), I'm writing this because I feel that at the age of 27 I should have done more, seen more and experienced more. I owe it to myself. But most of all I owe it to my wife and kids that I share with them that experience.

"So are you stuck in life?"

Yes.

No.

I am stuck, because I chose to be stuck. However, I could change that with a snap of my finger.

Say what, in fact, I am going to do so, tomorrow September 4, 2009. Friday, Philippine time.

"So, what are you rambling about - I thought this was about Changing my life?"

Well, it is.

But I can't change your life. You change your life. I'm not a self help guru like Bo Sanchez and his Get Truly Rich Club. I am not going to tell you to shell out a *few* bucks so that you can change your life.

What I am going to tell you is what I am about to do to change my life. So that together we'll see if this thing will work.

Let's face it, anybody can say that they found the secret formula to "success, life, business, richness, or love". I don't buy that. And I'm definitely not going to buy a guy's ramblings on CD on how to change my life. Heh. If you ask me, those secrets should be free, freed and spread out to everyone like fire on dry grass if it is what it is.

Paying for it, is just plain silly and outright contradictory. Why should you or me pay to change our lives? Isn't that the whole point - to not make money the center of our lives? Well, if paying for those things actually changed somebody's life, then good for them. But personally.... Ohhhhh, nevermind.

"Hey What has Ubuntu Have to do with This?"

Nothing.

Well, I'm using Ubuntu as my Operating System to connect to the Internet to write this blog.

But in a way, maybe it does have an influence on my writing. Hmmm, let's see.

Ubuntu means, "I am who I am because of who we all are."

Maybe in a way, in my writing, maybe I could help you change your life (for better or worse).

THE START

If you got this far reading my dissertation, thank you - for giving me the sublime pleasure of knowing that you care about what I think. *sob*

I hope that what I wrote and what I will write in the future, could impact your life, in a good way.

I don't know what the future holds, but I am sure that what I am about to do will change my life.

I am going to build a chicken farm in the province starting tomorrow.

Don't laugh. I know. I know.

It's not really going to be a chicken farm per se, you see it ~~was~~ is a small and humble private resort. There's a pool, some cottages, lots of trees, the locals are unsophisticated, life is simple, and so on and so forth.

Think of this as dannybuntu's simple life.

I'll be doing part of the work with my crew, and we will use whatever that is there for us to use - most of - it is lumber.

This will be an adventure for me for sure.

I'll be back in a week or two.

"Now wait just a second here, you said there was an opportunity to change my life..."

There is, you already have it within you. You just have to figure it out on your own like I am going to do.

There's not much really I could do to help you change your life and circumstances. Unless, you want to help me build a chicken farm.... Hahaha.

I can't pay you though. Hahahaha.

But I can give you chickens. :)

Day 1106: The Best Cloud Storage Solution I've Come Across - ADrive 50 GB Free Online Storage

Oh I forgot to mention. It runs perfectly on Linux using Java.

I tested one of my folders which has my law school archives. It has about 441 files of SCRA cases and other miscellaneous word documents. Total size of files is 112.47 MB and it will take about an hour to upload them all. Not bad, not bad at all.

Hands down, you can tear my mustache apart, this, undoubtedly, absolutely, whips the competition to oblivion.

They beat Microsoft and Google to it. (Microsoft's Skydrive has I think 25 GB, but no adequate Linux interface - Google's Gdrive is just a rumor at the moment.)

I think I should stop telling, you should try it on your own to see. Absolutely awesome.

Day 1101.b: Spideroak = Yet Another 2GB Cloud Storage Solution for Ubuntu

Why am I barraging you, the reader with all these posts about cloud storage solutions for Ubuntu?

Because you need it and these storage solutions are free.

I am using all of them so I have 6 GB of combined online storage.

Remember, I almost lost all of my kids photos.

SpiderOak

1. I started with downloading the SpiderOak client for Ubuntu 9.04.

The following platforms are also supported: Debian Etch, Debian Lenny, Fedora 10, Mac OS X, Slackware 12.1, Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, Ubuntu Hardy Heron, Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, Windows

2. I installed the deb file I just downloaded by opening it with Gdebi

3. Run this in Ubuntu/Gnome - Applications > Internet > SpiderOak Backup

4. You'll see SpiderOak's splash

5. SpiderOak setup screen:

6. Heck, I'll just post all the pictures in one go. You can figure it out ;)

7. After you've filled up the forms. Close the program and then check your email to click the account registration link that you are supposed to click. Click it. Really.

8. You'll be taken to their welcome page. You can close that now.

9. Go back and click Applications > Internet > SpiderOak Backup

This time it will show you their program. I'll leave the rest for you to explore.

If you ask me, this all feels all too Windowsy. But anyway, 2 GB of Free Online Storage is 2 GB of Free Online Storage.

DropBox + UbuntuOne + SpiderOak = 6 GB of FREE ONLINE CLOUD STORAGE

Day 1101.a: Dropbox and UbuntuOne

Before I tell you of another Cloud Storage Solution for Ubuntu, I promised that I'll give my feedback regarding my UbuntuOne and DropBox experiences. Here it is in a nutshell:

1. UbuntuOne does not work for me yet because it is still in beta stage. You know? There are a lot of bugs to be triaged, missing panel notifications when it is working, annoying panel notifications if it is not... I'll try again, I promise.

2. Dropbox is working A-OK. No problemo. In fact, it's what I am using right now to backup my documents. I simply copy and paste the file (or drag it) that I want to backup into the Dropbox folder and presto, it's backed up.

Moreoever, I noticed that they have a new promo, wherein any one referral gets you an additional 250 MB of storage on your free account. This is great.

I'm going to refer my wife, my 3 daughters, my 2 sisters, my mom, my four grandparents, you get the idea ;)

No bugs to report, no extra heave ho, file bug, locate bug, sudo sudo whatchamacallit whatchamadingle - just simple unadulterated almost mind numbing backup and file synchronization. That's how software as a service should be right? Right?

Day 1100: More Ubuntu Backup Solutions Found in the Clouds

Cloud Computing's application varies from simple backup solutions to complex data gathering and distribution. It's a technology that enables you to reallocate general computing functions from your physical desktop computer to a remote server. This saves you, the end user, the added cost and hassles of having to install bulky applications, updating programs, hardware failure, and the confinement of your data to a definite physical location.

In Ubuntu, Debian and Debian derived systems, there are at least two Cloud Computing solutions that provide Online Data Storage or Online Data Backup, namely: DropBox and UbuntuOne. With my recent hardware problems, I decided that it's time to backup my data - online. I'll be using both DropBox and UbuntuOne at the same time.

This blog post would briefly run over the features rather than give a full treatment, both have a 2 GB FREE ACCOUNT, Dropbox is supported in most systems, UbuntuOne is exclusive to Ubuntu Jaunty, UbuntuOne is still in beta hence, there are lots of bugs and both require having to install their small software on your computer.

I have both installed on my PC, and have been favoring Dropbox over UbuntuOne for the simple fact that installation and use are both simpler. Besides, using both gives me 4GB of FREE CLOUD STORAGE.

I'll discuss my experience with both on my next post.

Day 1099: Data Recovery on Ubuntu

With the recent demise of ironically, my backup hard disk. I set out to find a data recovery solution. I know the data is just there. It's just inaccessible.

The symptoms of my hard disk's problem were noted on my previous post.

The solution was provided by the Ubuntu Documentation Project itself.

1. I booted my Ubuntu Installer, which was the LiveCD I got which I ordered from Canonical.
2. I proceeded to add the repository of the Ubuntu Rescue CD Remix to get the necessary tools to get the job done.

$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

a. ADD to the bottom of the sources.list file.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/arzajac/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

b. SAVE

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-rescue-remix-tools

3. After that, I searched the Ubuntu Documentation Project for Recovery from Damaged Filesystem
4. I executed this command:

sudo ddrescue -r 3 /dev/sdb2 /media/backup/image /media/backup/logfile

It managed to rescue almost 25,000 individual files grouped together according to file type. It was organized by jpeg, bmp, gif, avi, mpg, etc.

The video that it did manage to save though were no longer playable. Otherwise, most of the other files were ok.

Day 1098: Buffer I/O Error on Device sdb2, Logical Block 19191

If you have hard disk problems...

The first thing you should do is DO NOT PANIC. Take deep breaths, stand a while, go away from the problem, take a walk, assess the situation, know the timeframe for fixing it, weigh the cost, time and benefit factors in saving your data. Prioritize.

If you think that you should be the one who could fix the problem, then start with Google. Google the exact error message. Follow the conversation of people who have the same problems. Get to know the appropriate log file. If you don't know which log file to find, ask in IRC or ask on a forum.

DON'T PANIC.

I panicked and here's my story:

I usually shut down my PC using a hard poweroff. That is, I issue the command

$sudo poweroff -h 0

Which basically, shuts down the PC, but leaves the monitor on with some text on the screen. Then I press the power button for 5 seconds. That's bad. Don't do it.

I haven't gotten to actually shutting it down properly for a long time but I recall finding a solution somewhere for it and actually wrote about it here:

So one day, I woke up and turned on my PC and it spewed out a host of "Buffer I/O Error on Device sdb2, logical block 19191"

I googled the error, and basically got the thought that the drive was comatose and is having fits of near death experiences.

A Short Story: My Dad and President Corazon Aquino

I was only 8 years old when news of coup d' etats went around. Being 8, I was not really that interested in politics or war. All I knew were descriptions from my yaya about "tora toras" and that we should put our "mattresses" in the front of our homes to protect us from the bombs. Everytime we heard an airplane flying overhead,we would go out to see where the tora toras would go.

We lived in Mandaluyong back then so we were really far from where the action was.

At that age, all I really cared about was Super Mario on my Family Computer and how to get 100 lives by jumping on a turtle...

But happen it did, Gringo Honasan launched the "most serious coup d'etat against the government of Philippine President Corazon Aquino beginning on December 1, 1989. It was completely defeated by the Philippine government by December 9, 1989." [Wikipedia]

For me, memories of those are just a blur. I quoted from his book: Filipino Isa Kang Alipin.

"On December 25, 1989, in the middle of a series of coup d'etats against the newly elected President Corazon Aquino, he expressed his staunch opposition to an armed uprising in the form of a full page advertisement in a major daily here in the Philippines entitled

"An Enraged Citizen Speaks Up!"

Here, he defended the Philippine Government and encouraged adherence to the Philippine Constitution and the rule of law. With the overwhelming show of support that the people gave to the then besieged president, he was summoned by the President in Malacanang Palace, to be personally thanked."

That advertisement appeared on Christmas Day. By that time we were already in Baguio. We stayed in the Court of Appeals compound, inside the cottage of then Court of Appeals Justice Buena - the father of his Ateneo de Manila College of Law classmate Justice Buena.

To me it was just a vacation. But my father was edgy and he kept moving around the house. Fortunately no untoward incident happened. We enjoyed Baguio which was very very different from the Baguio that we see now. Oh yeah, and I played computer games in the Maharlika Complex.

Looking back, I figured that what my father wrote had a profound effect on the President. The President called my dad up and asked him to go to Malacanang to simply thank him for showing his support.

I couldn't really remember how that transpired. All I recall is that my dad showed me a grainy tape in VCR showing him shaking hands with the President. It was quite funny and awkward. Cory asked my dad to sit and my dad in his profound respect said that the President should sit first. Finally at the behest of the President he sat down.

My father said that he was offered a Cabinet position in the Aquino Administration. But he politely declined because he wanted to do what he loved best - which was to practice law in a private capacity.

And that was the end of it.

Well of course, you're talking about 10,000,000 USD here. What were they expecting?

One problem I can see is that if they have to verify each and every idea it would literally take them a bazillion years to test. Most of these ideas are after all - inventions. I would assume that in order for their tests to possess a certain form of validity - they would have to use the Scientific Method - which is easier said than done since there are more than 150,000 ideas that were submitted.

Magnet motor anyone?

I still say to Google and to all the other submitters,

"Open Source it"

Release your great idea to the world for some venture capitalists to snap up.

Day 1061: Bayanihan Linux 5 Screenshots

Here's my way of promoting Bayanihan Linux to the Filipino people as well as the International Community. Yes, folks, we Filipinos have our own Linux distribution as well.

Right of the bat, I'm going to admit that I'm not really that well versed in evaluating a Linux distribution. I simply like it or not.

At the most, I can give it a score of 10 (highest) or 1 (lowest) without any explanation or justification for giving such a score. So if you really want an in-depth analysis, I suggest that you try it out for yourself to see.

This Linux distribution is based on Debian, runs KDE 3.5 has the easiest installation routine I've ever encountered ever and has a pretty awesome wallpaper.

Since I am running Bayanihan Linux 5 on Virtualbox OSE I can't really test its actual performance. If there's such a thing as a Virtual Performance then I'll disclose that for what it's worth.

Okay, so here we go:

INSTALLATION

1. Booting the Virtual Linux Distribution from the Virtual CDROM in the Virtual Machine Installed in a Virtual Drive.

Yes, I am beginning to hate the word Virtual too.

I actually installed this 5+ times already so I have tried both Graphical and Text Mode install. The install process is ~~very~~ extremely newbie friendly. I literally installed by just pressing the Enter key again and again and again like a drunk rabbit.

The more advanced crowd would probably say that it's too simple and that the installation process actually hides more than it should. But nevertheless, these things could be tweaked later on.

Basically there are two modes shown above: the Graphical Mode and the Text Mode. Like I said, it's so easy even a drunk rabbit which can press the Enter key repeatedly can install it.

Seriously, it's really that easy. I would suggest the Text Mode when you are going to install this since there is no significant difference between the two except the additional usage of resources. Of course I could be wrong, but hey I'm a practical guy. To me they're the same banana.

POST INSTALLATION

First Boot

I can't really say since this installation is performed on a Virtual Machine. But speaking from my experience, it's simply slow.

How slow? After 5 minutes I got a sandwich, spread some peanut butter, toasted it, made myself coffee, tasted the coffee, added sugar, tasted coffee again, munched the sandwich and it's still not done.

Now before you rage against me - I'm going to say this again - this is on a Virtual Machine with an allocation of 256 MB RAM running on my Celeron 2.66 with 750+ MB RAM on Ubuntu 9.04 (Host) and Gnome.

Good work on making government logos look "ok". It makes me feel that I'm actually working there and this is my work PC.

I couldn't change the screen resolution in Virtualbox so I moved the panel on top.

What happens if the people who are supposed to protect your data lose data themselves to hackers?

It seems like we are about to see as news spread out that Twitter employees themselves got careless with their own data and lost important documents such as executive meeting notes, partner agreements, financial projections to the meal preferences, calendars, phone logs of various Twitter employees.

So, are you still thinking about tweeting about your travel plans, or business decisions to the world? Now would be a good time to think again.

the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Day 1051: My First Bash Script - Downloads Videos

UPDATED: I've added the -c option to wget

Hi, guys, just thought I'd share with you my first bash script. I know it's crude - hopefully you could teach me a thing or two (better yet a hundred).

This script would make a folder in your home directory and download 35 videos of Massachussets (did I spell that right?) Institute of Technology's Open Courseware for High School Physics by Prof. Walter Lewin.

The school I went to when I was in high school had a specialized curriculum which did not benefit me the joy of being taught High School Physics so I decided to start learning some from the best.

It downloads 3.6 GB of mp4 video and their corresponding transcript from the Internet Archive.

Got it from here: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Physics/8-...Home/index.htm

And it took my pldt plan 999 to download that approximately 36 hours.

Suggestions/corrections are very much appreciated.

Hope others would do the same for any topic. Kakapagod pala gumawa ng script.

According to Yugatech, sulit.com.ph has been sold to a foreign company for an undisclosed amount.

I feel excited about the prospect but sad because they sold out to a foreign company.
I feel weirded out.
I feel envious of admin but glad of a Fellow Pinoy's success.
Wow. Just wow.
This comes as a shockingly big surprise.
Almost coming to heels with the sale of Piratebay.
