This is a great homemade recipe I just found and used to effortlessly clean my microwave spotless.

Mix 2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda with 1 Cup of water in a bowl.
Microwave for 3 minutes. Wipe microwave clean with paper towel. Finished.

Stuck on food comes right off the inside walls of the microwave. Amazingly easy.

Cancer Causing Chemical Reduced in Potato Chips

As a result of an case settlement, a number of food manufacturers and restaurants have agreed to reduce the cancer causing chemical acrylamide found in their foods and/or provide new warning labels.

The above link provides some quick FYI about other health & legal matters that could trouble you.

California had sued H.J. Heinz Co., Frito-Lay, Kettle Foods Inc., and Lance Inc. in 2005, alleging they violated a state requirement that companies post warning labels on products with carcinogens. These companies have avoided trials by paying a combined amount of $3 million in fines.

Acrylamide forms when some foods, especially potatoes, grain products and coffee are fried, baked or roasted cooked at higher temperatures.

Also, an update on the recent Salmonella outbreak and why it is so difficult to trace the source of this particular outbreak and what the FDA is trying to do resolve the problem.

Borax compounds are used in cosmetics, medicines, ceramics, glass industry, fiberglass, and is an important ingredient in agricultural chemicals and fire retardants. Borax is made of 100% Borax, a naturally occurring mineral composed of sodium, boron, oxygen and water. Borax is not harmful to washing machines, plumbing or septic tanks and does not contain phosphates or chlorine. This is the all natural way to clean your home and clothes.

Here is a a few homemade cleaning solutions:

Laundry:
Add a 1/2c. to your load of laundry, it boosts your normal detergent and beleive me there is a difference. My laundry has never looked brighter.

Hardwood Floors:
1/4c. Borax
Mix with a Gallon of Water.

General Cleaner:
1t. Borax
1t. Baking Soda
2t. White Vinegar
2c. Hot Water
Mix in Spray Bottle. I have been using this for my kitchen counters and cupboards, works fantastic!

Toilet Bowls:
1/4c Borax
Add to bowl, clean with brush, let stand for at least 30 minutes.

Porcelain:
Wet cloth with water and Borax, wipe porcelain clean.

Refrigerator:
1T. Borax
2c. Water
Mix in spray bottle. Spray areas, wipe clean. For harder areas spray and let stand for 10 minutes. Works wonderfully.

Mattress Messes:
Pour Borax directly on wet spot, rub in, let stand for a while, vacuum up.

Granite Counter Tops and Radon

Recently I became exposed to the news that granite counter tops could be a source of radon in the house, my exposure coincided with this release of a report from the University of Akron.

The gist of the report is found on page 12, quoted here to save you time:

"The testing procedures for radon emanation of granite countertops are designed for normal use of these stones only as countertops. Adapting the 4pCi/L action level as recommended by US EPA as a reference and the house is not in active use, Crema Bourdeaux countertop raises less than 7% of this action level. The second and the third highest radon count stone Tropic Brown and Baltic Brown can add only approximately 1% of this action level. All the other countertops adds only insignificant amount of radon to the house. If normal air exchange rate is applied or the house is actively used, then the radon addition should be much smaller.
The main source of radon emitted from granite countertop is from trace minerals found inside the brown or black minerals known as biotite because of their uranium content. The radon emanation from other minerals in the countertops such as orthoclase and quartz are negligible. If proper resealing is applied once a year or at other frequencies recommended by the industry, the radon emanation can further be reduced."

So, much ado about nothing. . . .

It's Not the Jalepenos

I suppose it's not the Jalapenos or the Serrano Peppers either, the FDA has concluded that the peppers were not the cause of the Salmonella outbreak. Their investigation will continue to find the source of the outbreak.

I will keep you posted with new information as it becomes available.

Clover is coming! Be calm, its not going to ransack Erie. Its a new coffee maker, but not the tradition contraption. This item cost over $11,000 and Starbucks is going to start placing it in stores in an effort to revive growth again for the Seattle brewer.

I just read a well written product review and in depth background report on the origination of this device by Mathew Honan in the August issue of Wired magazine.

Genetically Modified(GM) foods involves taking a gene from one plant, animal, or microorganism and inserting it into the DNA of another. The concern is the question of whether this is safe or even necessary in our food supply.

The most common genetically modified produce is corn, soy, cottonseed, and canola.

Growers in the United States don't have to label which foods contain GM ingredients, so most Americans are not exactly sure what we are putting into our systems. One of the biggest concerns is the allergic reactions to these foods, yet most experts say there is no proven health risk, but they are concerned about the long-term effects of altering the genetic make-up of plants and animals.

In the European Union, labeling food with genetic modifications is mandatory, and several countries have actually banned GM food crops.

Genetically modified ingredients have been in our foods for almost a decade now with no obvious proven health risk. I like to then ask why there are 27 European countries where labels are required or have banned the ingredients in their foods altogether? Are they just overly cautious?

Some things you can do to protect and educate yourself.

1. Go Organic
2. Check your labels for common ingredients like corn oil, corn syrup, cornstarch, soy protein, soy oil, soy sauce, lecithin, cottonseed oil and canola oil.
3. Check out Greenpeace.org for an extensive list of foods with and without GM ingredients.
4. Take part in The Campaign to Label Genetically Modified Foods here.

The FDA has updated its warning concerning the outbreak of Salmonella.

The FDA has determined that fresh tomatoes are not associated with the current outbreak. As a result, the agency has removed their warning against eating red raw tomatoes.

The FDA has new evidence showing that raw Jalapeno and raw Serrano peppers may be linked to this Salmonella outbreak. At this time the FDA is warning the elderly, infants, and people with impaired immune systems, to avoid eating raw jalapeno and raw Serrano peppers.
