Sixer Council Meeting - 4th December 2009

We held a very successful Sixer Council Meeting last week Friday where all the new Sixers received a special little card from Akela.

We chatted about their roles as leaders as well as what their duties would be each week.

Some wonderful suggestions came forward for new games to play as well as outings that they would like to go on. So all in all, a most enjoyable time was had by all.

Wimpy 2009 Outing - 4th December

Today was our term outing to the Wimpy Roadhouse. This has now become a tradition and every year this time, you will find us all there!

Below are some random photos of our wonderful cub scouts having a glorious time.

Well another year of cubs has ended - I can't believe how quickly these years are passing by!

I hope you have all enjoyed this time with us. Remember if there is every anything you would like to find out about cub scouting, or any ideas you need, just drop me an email and I will gladly assist where I can.

Even Santa Claus is a scout and on his trip round the world he popped into 9th Benoni!

One of my cubs who recently went up to scouts was invested.

Well done to both Jordan and Andrea.

We know you are going to love being in the Troop.

As is normal in any Troop, once the scouts reach 18 they no longer are scouts as such. Hayley, Michelle and Graham are all nearing that time, and here they are being presented with a 9th Benoni trophy of appreciation for their dedication and commitment during their time with us. We hope to see them back shortly as leaders.

Taxi Trip - 27th November 2009

Our theme today was transport on the taxi! and here in Gauteng we have millions of taxis!

Next week we will be having a Sixer Council meeting at the Wimpy in Lakeside with all the Sixers and Seconds.

We gave each Sixer a chance to chat to his Six and find out a little bit more about what they would like to do next term; what games they enjoy playing and perhaps if they could suggest a new game they had never played at cubs before.

We also asked them to discuss an outing.

... and then it was time for fun!

Our steam release was a quick run around.

Just as the taxi drivers here in South Africa have special hand signals for where they are going, our game was based on the same idea.

Rikki gave special signals for North, South, East and West and the kids had to run in those directions.

Oh dear! .. our taxi lost its wheel. We had to roll it to the petrol station to get it repaired

Relay game with cubs rolling the taxi tyre to a certain spot and back.

Great fun.

and a very simply and easy game

Each cub got to make his very own taxi.

Templates were printed and cut out before hand

All the cub had to do was fold it along the lines and stick a piece of paper onto the bottom

and the race was on....

Cub took a straw and blew it across the floor

and these little taxis flew across the floor

As this was the last pack meeting at the hall, we had a small party and each cub was given a little gift.

These are 'magic' cups that sing when wet

and today was really extra special as we invested 4 new chums.

Welcome to each and every one of them.

It is always special to have new friends amongst us.

and we know that they will have a wonderful time with us.

We wish them all the best on their scouting journey

with many years of fun .

Remember, this is only the beginning of that wonderful adventure!

and there is still plenty more!

Next week we will meet at the Wimpy in Lakeside at 4.30pm

Train Odyssey - 20th November 2009

The weather today at the pack meeting was horrendous! It has been raining on and off for the past 6 days - something we are not used to!

Our programme today revolved around train transport

and this was the train each cubs got to make.

1 Fizzer with 2 toothpicks stuck through it with little sweets for wheels.

Simple, quick and easy.

In teams, the cubs ran around forming a train with their left hand between their legs holding onto the person behind's right hand.

Great fun .... and chaos!

Another variation of this game is for the cubs to be in relay formation and the one cub runs up to a marker, and runs back to collect his "carriage". They both run to the marker, holding onto the person in front, and then go and collect another "carriage".

Carry on collecting carriages until everyone is linked in.

Take one more trip and then sit down.

The Lions made a stunning bird feeder.

While the Caracals meditated a while ... deciding what "conservation" was.

This was hilarious! I asked them what they understood by "conservation" and the one little guy moved into this pose, with the other 2 guys following him!

On asking what was going on, the little Indian guy said he was meditating to get the answer ..... and you know what he came up with ..... "to save the planet"

Tiny little pine cones were used to made this lovely bird feed.

Peanut butter was pushed into the cone and then rolled in bird seed.

Our revision game was knotting.

Each cub had a chance to run up and tie an easy reef knot and be part of the train.

The Leaping Wolves were the "engine" and had to make sure all carriages were tied on correctly.

and today we said goodbye to 4 of our cubs who have gone up to scouts.

Thanks Mark, Jordan, David and Andrea. We have loved having you with us and we know you will all have great fun in the troop.

We also had a very special guest today - Akela Candice from 1st Germiston came to visit.

It was great having you with us.

On Foot - 13th November 2009

Our programme today related to foot transport.

The Steam Release game had the cubs running in all directions!

A circle of rope is placed on the ground - big enough for all cubs to fit inside.

On the blow of the whistle, cubs must run around.

The circle is now made a little smaller.

On the blow of the whistle, all cubs must race to the circle and see who fits in.

Those who do not reach the rope in time, sit out.

The cubs loved this game!

Whilst on foot, one is sure to get "smelly socks" - so it was ideal to do a bit of sense training.

Different household smells were placed in bottles inside clean socks.

Cubs were blindfolded and the "dirty socks" passed around for them to smell.

As you can see from their expressions, some of the smells were a bit nasty!

..... like vinegar!

Our Instruction were focused on compass work..

fire lighting....

while the Caracals coloured in the SA flag and the Cheetahs did Scout's Pace.

To pass the time whilst walking, a good idea is to sing!

The cubs made some musical instruments with beads .....

and had great fun singing and playing the drums and shakers.

A very special part of the meeting was handing over the Leaping Wolf Certificate to Mark.

Well done Mark!

In order to make our Sixers feel extra special, we placed their peronal invite in the front of the hall. Each Sixer needs to come up with an idea for a new game for the new term - amongst other things.

Horsing Around - 6th November

As part of the Transport Theme for the term, our programme today was on "horse transport".

So what better way to start off with some "horse-play" and trying to catch the horse's tail.

Cubs tucked their scarves into the back of their pants, and on the go of the whistle cubs ran around trying to pull another cub's tail.

Here, a brother and sister having enormous fun!

Our next game -oh, I mean Durban July, was run at 16h05 with Sloppy Socks taking pole position whilst Great Guns had the inside track.

All horses did exceptionally well!

Being on the race track all day, certainly gets hot.

The cubs then made their own fly swatter.

They coloured in and personalised each one before cutting and then joining them to form a circle.

Baloo and Rikki had pesky flies on a sting, and the cubs had to swat them with their new hand-made swatter.

The Caracals today learnt about Communication as well as the Cub Prayer.

Our cubs then sat down and listened to a yarn about all the famous people who relied on their trusty horses. One example is Dick King who rode from Durban to Grahamstown. Today a statue of Dick King and his beloved horse stand at the bottom of Cape Road and Rink Street.

Cubs then had to catch their horses and make sure that they did not wander off.

Each team was given a rope with a lasso knot tied in it. This then they had to throw over their "horse" from a distance.

Enjoyed by all!

Halloween Sleepover - 30th October

After a hectic pack meeting, the cubs settled down to some gruesome Monster Munches!

Easy to make 'creepy cuisine', these monster munches are just 2 meat balls for eyes, 2 slices of gherkins and 2 slices of black olives. Smother with Tomato Sauce!

During the screening of the movie, (we watched UP) the cubs were handed some Halloween pop corn and marshmallows.

... and there was plenty of "hot stuff" to drink.

They each received a bat mask as well.

Looking good!

We had prepared all the bottles so all the cubs had to do was stick on the face that they wanted.

.... and put the holder on....

They could also put 'hair' on the top if desired.

I got some ric-rac in black - but one could use anything from strips of paper to ribbon.

Finished at last!

... and don't they look good in the dark!

All we did was put a torch inside of them.

We did have a special visitor who came flying in on her broomstick - oh dear! she must have misplaced her broomstick, as I see this is a garden rake!

The movie was wonderful.

It rained pretty hard whilst we were watching the DVD so the sound was not too great (we have a tin roof!)... but afterwards the cubs were treated to delicious cup cakes...

... with hot chocolate.

The cubs each received a marshmallow on a stick to dip in their hot chocolate!

We went to bed around 10h30 .... but we all know what cubs are like!

The boys were in the adjoining hall and we stayed with the girls in our hall. They sat around telling ghost stories! .... but by 11pm all was quiet!

I got up at 5:30am, dressed and wandered down to the dam.

This is the sight that greeted me.

Some ducks floating around, icy, chilly winds and overcast skies..... but luckerly, no rain.

Rise and Shine was about 6pm when we all cleaned up.

Afterwhich we had breakfast.

Our delicious yogi drinks were donated by FIRST DAIRIES - and these are truly scrumpious.

We cut off the witch's fingers as she flew by, and the cubs enjoyed them for breakfast!

One of the little cubs came up to me on Saturday morning and said "Akela, this was my bestest day ever"..... and this just make all the hard work worthwhile!

On a Ghost Trip - 30th October

Our theme today - of course - was Halloween, and the cubs came dressed up as wonderful and weird characters!

Everyone looked wonderful!

We even had a welcoming pumpkin at the door!

Our instruction for the Caracals was "Stranger Danger"

.... and the Lions learnt about Road Safety.

There were a few old bones lying around!

and we played a couple of 'ghoulish games'

Instead of bobbing apples, here cubs had to run up in relay formation, and collect their ghostly gumph! (marshmallow)

If any of you have tried apple bobbing, you will know this is not easy!

Our next ghostly ganter, was a special scavenger hunt where each Six had to find their treasure. Inside the treasure box was a message .... which the cubs had to act out.

"Act like a mummy"

"Dance like Dracula"

etc.

Our cubs love play-acting and their confidence has grown in leaps and bounds.

Most of the cubs stayed for the DVD evening - and those that did not sleep over went home after the movie.

Star Pack Evaluation - 3rd Impala Boksburg

Today I had the pleasure of going to 3rd Impala Cub Scouts in Boksburg to do a Star Pack Evaluation.

The theme was yummy "chocolate" ..... they could not have had a nicer programme for Akela Joy as chocolate is my favourite vegetable ... (please don't tell me chocolate is not a vegetable!)

This is such a good idea.
Take lots of different sweet wrappers and paste them onto cardboard - making sure there is 2 of everything. Play the memory game whereby a cub turns over 2 cards and if they match, he gets another turn. If not, someone else has a turn to match wrappers.

Next was a Kim's Game where the cubs were blindfolded and had to smell a number of wonderous items.

Mmmm... could that be peanut butter?

Tastes good!

Another good idea was to take a box and cut a small hole in it. Place something inside the box and let the cubs "peep" inside to see what is hidden.

Can you guess what is inside the box?

Now just look at this !!!!

Yummy stuff...

Take some marshmallows...

some melted chocolate...

and some coloured sugar sticks....

place the marshmallow on the stick and dip in chocolate and let set.

Some singing to keep the spirits up..

and then onto throwing the dice to get a 6.

Race to put a scarf and cap on

and then cut a piece of chocolate with a knife and fork and then only eat it!

Everyone had a turn to throw this huge dice and eat a tiny piece of chocolate.

All in all this was a lovely programme.

Thanks to Akela Kate and all the Leaders for making it such fun for the cubs.

On a Jumbo Jet - 16th October

Today we took a Jumbo Jet ride - with the cubs as pilots!

Whew! .... what a ride it was!

We invited Mr P to join us and he brought along his trusted friend Virtsim , the friendly, Flight Simulator.

Each cub had a chance to fly the plane....

and be a fighter pilot.

Virtsim may be contacted on the Johannesburg Code (011) 916-3005.

The costs are very reasonable.

Whilst each cub was having his turn in the flight simulator, the other cubs played a few games and made paper aeroplanes which we flew.

Of course we had to see whose plane would go the furtherest, highest, fastest etc.

All in all, a great pack meeting.

All Aboard! - 9th October 2009

Our theme this term is TRANSPORTATION..

and in order to see where our boat was destined for, we started off with a quick Steam Release of NSEW

The cubs made their own little boat - very cute, quick and easy.

We have started our new cub programme, so here we have the Caracals doing instruction. They learnt their Promise today.

The Leopards learnt how to re-wire a plug.

while the Cheethas coloured in the South African flag.

Cubs just being cubs!

We finished off with a relay game after explaining the concept of "imagination" to the cubs. They needed to imagine that these coloured pieces of wood were actually cut out in the shapes of boats and not frogs!

The cubs had great fun with this game and raced the boats from one side to the other.

This is a lovely game and a nice "filler" as well.

Shapes are cut out - in this case the frog - and a tiny hole is drilled at the top for a piece of string to be threaded through.

One end of the string is tied to an immovable object and the cub holds the other end of the string and "walks" the frog to him.

Our first meeting back was a huge success with cubs bursting with energy.

AGM and Annual Prizegiving 2009

We held our Annual Prize Giving and AGM tonight.

This is our Group Scouter with a few of my cubs sitting on the floor waiting their turn.

After my speech our cubs did their little talk, telling all the parents about what we have been up to during the year.

It just gives the parents a perspective on what we actually do achieve.

It was then on to our awards and here Mark is receivng a certificate and cup for Excellent Attendance.

Erin received the cup for "Best Cubbing Spirit"

The Cub of the Year went to Luke Turner.

The Six of the Year went to GREEN SIX

Well done to all my cubs.

Lory Park outing - 19th September

9th Benoni Bambanani organised an outing on Saturday to the Lory Park in Midrand - and what a WONDERFUL event this was!

Lory Park is well worth the visit - well maintained with much to see.

This is the Caracal which is taken on a leash for a walk around the park at 11h30

They have beautiful black swans, secretary birds, blue cranes ... just to name a few.

There are many Birds of Prey

... as can be seen in the background!

If you take a very close look, you will see a LION sunbathing on top of the roof ..... we found this quite hilarious!

.... so have given you a little bit of a closer view of the lion ...

They have a large variety of parakeets that they bring out daily and these birds are very tame.

My favourite is the Owl and at feeding time, visitors are allowed into the owl enclosure to feed them.

This is the Caracal going for his walk!

... and if you look carefully you will see a honey badger that is also taken for a walk!

These two painting are on the walk and are very realistic!

Other animals include a couple of tiger, leopard, puma, and many many more.

Lory Park is well worth the trip and I know you will not be disappointed.

Spring Fever - 18th September 2009

The Sixers and Seconds joined me a little earlier today for our Sixer Council meeting.

Plenty of ideas and suggestions were forthcoming and we will use some of these in our programme planning for next term!

Today's meeting was a fun meeting being the end of the school term and we played a great game the cubs all enjoyed.

In Sixes cubs line up, and on the whistle run foward to blow up a balloon. Once blown up they must sit on it to pop and then race back when the next cub has his turn.

Great fun!

.... and we played this a few times!

Our little ones wrote a letter to be sent to a cub in a different pack somewhere in the world....

whilst the older cubs learnt some knots...

.... and of course growing things and making mulch is also very important.

Learning how to light a match is important and this was another quick game we played.

Cubs had to light the match correctly, light a small candle, blow it out and race back for the next cub to have a turn.

We have had quite a few of our cubs complete their Leaping Wolf and we are extremely proud of them - well done!

Luke has also completed his Naturalist Interest Badge.

We will see you all again on the 9th October - Happy Holidays!

Cheetah Cheetah oops I mean Tiger Tiger!

We completed our Jungle Book story today with "Tiger Tiger" where Shere Khan is killed...... but we had a very special visitor to our pack. Read on.....

As you all know, Shere Khan was lame so our first game was Tiger Soccer where they cubs had to only use one leg - just like Shere Khan!

We had lots of extra visitors today ... who joined in all the fun at cubs

Our cubs then had to cross the ravine where Mowgli had killed Shere Khan and collect items and bring them back to the den.

In relay formation each cub ran foward collected an item and raced back.

Mowgli now had Shere Khan's skin and needed to place it on the council rock. We played a circle game similar to "duck, duck, goose"

In keen anticipation for our special visitor, all cubs and parents alike were very well behaved!!

Let me introduce you to Byron.. the beautiful Cheetah.

What a boy!

Rita gave a talk about the sanctuary and all the ambassadors they have and then each cub got an opportunity to stroke Byron.

Special Good turn - 5th September 2009

Our Leaping Wolves (cubs who are between 10 and 11years) completed their Good Turn Project.

They painted tongue depressors and decorated them to be used as bookmarks.

These were then donated to Hospice to raise funds.

Well done guys - these truly looked stunning - Raksha has some brilliant ideas up her sleeve!

Red Flower - 4th September 2009

We continued our story of The Jungle Book and today we told the cubs about Mowgli going into the village to fetch the Red Flower.

A game was played whereby the "red flower" was placed in the middle of the hall and all the "villagers" were lying sleeping around the red flower. One cub is chosen as Mowgli who then has to creep through the villagers and see if he/she can retrieve the red flower with out making a sound. If someone hears the cub, they point from where they are hearing the noise and if correct they get a turn to be Mowgli.

The little ones learnt all about the Dangers of Fire

... and once the fire was ready they were allowed to quickly toast a marshmallow

Being a Good Citizen - 28th August 2009

Today we learnt about being good citizens!

We started doing the Citizen Badge a few weeks ago, and today we completed a few more parts of it.

Our angels!

We played a lovely game called "defending the president". Each cub had a balloon tied on his shoe with an elastic band. Cubs had to run around trying to pop each other's balloon. The cubs had to try and protect their own Sixer and not allow anyone to pop his balloon.

This was such a quick and easy, fun game to play.

The next part of the badge was to learn about 2 historical places of interest near Benoni. Rikki is fantastic with historical items so he told them about the Voortrekker Monument as well as Dunswart in Benoni. The cubs will now go home and write this up in their little booklet that we made for them.

Baloo told them why we have laws...

The cubs will now go home, complete the badge requirements and make an appointment with the examiner.

A few more games were played and here they learnt how to work as a team!

A cup of water was passed overhead all the way to the back and then all the way forward again. The team with the most water in the cup when it arrives back in the front, is the winner.

Just look at the expressions on these faces!!

One of "my cubs" was invested into scouts tonight - so I stayed behind for the investiture.

Kaa's Hunting - 21st August 2009

The Bandalog were full of beans today and our first "game" was sending the cubs out with no instruction at all just to see what they would do.

As is normal with "little monkeys" they ran around aimlessly with no leader.....

... getting up to all sorts of mischief!

The Jungle Book story continued...(and this is a lovely version of the original story - shortened for the younger reader)

Of course, Mowgli had to have very sharp eyes in the jungle to watch out for any danger.

... and here Raksha, without saying a word, is throwing items into a bucket....

.... afterwhich the cubs had to recall each and every item.

any my favourite is when Kaa loses his skin.

This is such a great game to play and when the cubs eventually catch on to what is happening and get it right, it can be great fun!

... round and round.... hissing like a snake...

On to the craft...

.... and there were some beautiful snakes - all colourful and bright.

National Cub Challenge 14 August 2009

Today we had our "special programme" for the National Cub Challenge. Some of the cubs came dressed up as "Care Bears"

We started off by parading those that had come dressed up and choosing a winner. Today our winners were our twins who dressed up in these beautiful outfits made by their mom especially for this meeting.

Being Care Bears, we all need to know where we are going so our first game was a quick NSEW.

Followed by the "Smile Song"

What better way to get to all those people in need, than by taking a bus! Here they played a lovely game "on the bus" where if a name was called out that was a STREET, they had to do a certain action, whilst if ROAD was called they had to do another action.

Here they had reached the BUS STOP, and they knew they had to exit through the "doors" and sit quietly in the hall.

After listening to a lovely yarn and doing some sense training, each cub made a special car for someone special.

Care Bears need to be able to work with anyone in the community. Here the cubs played a game whereby they picked up a card and had to "mime and act" out what was written on a card. Example: Fireman, Policeman, Nurse etc

All Care Bears collect clothes for the under-priviledged!

We played a circle game passing around an object and when STOP was called, a bag of clothes was presented to that cub who had to pull out any article and put it on.

District Cycle Rally - 8th August 2009

Our Cycle Rally was held today, with Cub Packs from the East Rand District taking part.

It was held at the Korsmans Bird Sanctuary which the cubs rode around - and approximate 2.2km ride per lap.

Congratulations goes to Jason Mee for winning a prize for doing the most laps in the Leopard Category. Well done to both of you!

Congratulations to 4th Benoni for winning the Cycle Rally.

9th Benoni came 3rd - so well done to all our cubs who attended and did so well.
