A few quick notes on where you can find Re:Paper this month

October 13-14 Candler Park Fall Festival
10am – 6pm, Saturday and Sunday
A classic Atlanta neighborhood festival with an artist's market, food, live music and entertainment, including Atlanta staples Baton Bob and Kingsized! Located in Candler Park (Atlanta) on McLendon Avenue between Little Five Points (Moreland Avenue) and Clifton Road. As always, save yourself hassel and gas $$ and take Marta to the Candler Park Station!

October 27 Washington Market Days Street Festival
10am – 7pm Saturday, with a Street Dance following 7-9pm
Celebrate fall in beautiful Washington, GA! Festivities include: 80+ vendors, live music, street dance, children’s activities, contests, autumn crafts and so much more! Get out of town and enjoy a drive through the fall country side, Washington is approx. 2 hours east of Atlanta.

Re:Paper is back at the Beehive . Check out Beehive for products designed and produced by local artists and emerging designers including Re:Paper books; products now in the store including my new line of address books and some of my ever popular board game books (think Scrabble, Operation and Bingo)! If you can’t get out to the Beehive you can check out most of the rest of my stock on my Esty webpage . Guest books are the hot item of the moment; don’t forget if your special day is on the way, I do take special orders. Let me rephrase that: I love special orders! There’s nothing more fulfilling than collaborating on a book, so keep those orders rolling this way! You can reach me by leaving a comment here or on my Etsy page, or by sending me an e-mail at the address in the top left corner of this page. What if I can't make it to a future show?

Re:Paper is a Busy Bee

Sorry I've slipped off the internet of late, rest assured it's because I've been busy cooking up a lot of great new stuff for this summer. First off let me proudly announce that Re:Paper will be a part of the big Indie Craft Experience show on June 2nd in Centennial Olympic Park. This year's event looks the be the best yet, with outdoor shopping, tons of crafty vendors and live music by local Atlanta bands. Check out the details here and be sure to stop by!

Those goodies I've been working on? Well, I've been indulging in my two passions to bring you two unique lines of books this summer. From my love of fine papers (especially Yuzen) come some very sophisticated journals, address books, wedding guest books and yearly planners for you to treasure. And from my love of thrift-shopping and rescue/ reusing fantastic finds come a line of blank-books in board-game themes (think Bingo, Operation, Scrabble and more). I've also been working on some custom projects which I'll share soon- including some lovely wedding guest-books. I'll have a portfolio at the ICE show, make sure and stop by if you're in the market for something special for your special day (custom orders are always welcome). Did you know, Re:Paper (aka Sara Hindmarch) is also a photographer? You do now, so stop on by Inman Perk (coffee shop extraordinaire) in Inman Perk now through April 22nd and see my photo show. Better yet, stop by this Saturday night (March 31st) 7-9pm at Inman Perk for my opening reception. There will be all kinds of sweet goodies and free wine for your enjoyment. Oh, and there will be art- culled from my work these past two years reveling in the beauty that is an urban tree, in it's many forms be it lamp lit or shade tossed on peeling billboards. So come on down, and enjoy!

Hackbooking

I would like to coin, here and now, a new phrase. Born of my love of jumbling words and making books, my I introduce to you: hackbooking. What is hackbooking you say? Hackbooking is the process of borrowing from tools from the wide world of scrapbooking and pressing them into the service of bookbinding.

So why hackbooking? I enjoy making books, and while I’d LOVE to have thousands of dollars to throw at everything Talas has to offer, at the end of the day for a hobby binder it’s a game of “make do.” And what better way to make do than to borrow from the wide world of products that scrapbooking has created? Sure, I’ll be skipping the aisles of cutesy appliqués and layout templates, but a tool made to set cute little eyelets in paper? Hack it, now it’s a cool tool for setting eyelets in your board before binding a Coptic stitch. Lovely 12x12 paper page meant as a meaningful setting for pictures of your best friend’s wedding? Hack it, now it’s a beautiful endpaper for your own handmade wedding guest book. Don’t even get me started on the organizational goodies- the possibilities are endless! I’ll profess my love here and now for the “Crop-a-dial” eyelet setter and snap punch (which makes many of my upcycled books possible). Also new to me thanks to a student (thanks Laura!) but soon to enter my arsenal is the Paper Shaper corner rounder punch (great for cleaning up the edges on your book). So join the revolution (that was, um, already happening- but now it has a name!) what are your favorite hackbooking tools?

Perhaps it arrives in your e-mailbox every morning, feeding you delicious shopping news and event tidbits. Perhaps you've never heard of it (but now, don't you wish you had)? I'm talking about Daily Candy, "the ultimate insider’s guide to what’s hot, new, and undiscovered." Hot, new and undiscovered. . . sound familiar? Did you resolve to learn something new this year? Why not learn to make your own books? I'll be teaching a four-session class at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio in February, featuring the three structures shown in the picture here: pamphlet stitch, hard cover case-bound, and open spine coptic stitch. Beginners will learn all the necissary skills to make these books at home, more experienced binders are welcome to come to refresh skills and experiment with new matreials and modifications. Classes will run 6:30-9:30pm on Wednesdays in February, see the Atlanta Printmaker's Studio website for more information and to sign up. Hope to see you there!

It's time to mark you calendars for the 2006 Atlanta Craft Mafia Ho-Ho-Homade Holiday Show, December 3rd at the Solarium in Oakhurst Village. This much anticipated follow up to last year's Holiday Show and the Summer Indie-pendence events was even featured in the super cool DIY bible ReadyMade magazine, so you know you'll want to be there! I'll be in attendance with a myriad of other talented crafters, just in time to rescue you from the mall and tempt you with handmade goodies for the holiday gifting. In addition to supporting local artists, the show will benefit the Drew Charter School's Band Program with a suggested $2 per person entrance fee and artwork raffle. Add in the fact that the Craft Mafia provides a mean spread of complimentary hors d’oeuvres and groovy holiday music and you've got yourself one big warm holiday spirit wrapped into a lovely afternoon of shopping. I thought I'd share the latest custom book with you all, a whimsical and modern doggie themed dayplanner for Badda Bling of Etsy. The book features my signature flat pocket cover intereiors with a frame in matching paper on the front (the blue tab is for ease of inserting a photo, presumably of Badda's beloved goldin retriever). It was a blast working on this, many thanks to Badda Bling who provided format ideas and links to papers that she liked. Badda also sent the cute glass doggie bone bead at the end of the bookmark, a creation of glass artist Janet Crosby of Firefly Lampwork.

While I'm plugging away on custom books and future stock for some upcoming projects (to be announced soon) I thought I'd bring you some wonderful news to you from the world of paper at large: Volcano Book Arts has some absolutely gorgeous marbled paper by paper artist Galen Barry in-stock. The sample at the left is just one of the many amazing color and pattern combos that have me drooling. This wonderful paper that sells out fast, so if you have a paper habit to feed (and you know you do) do yourself a favor and snatch up a couple of sheets asap at the Volcano Book Arts website

If you're not the paper buying type, might I suggest a new album? The Decemberists latest work "The Crane Wife" was released to the world just the other day and has been running non-stop in my studio ever since. Lush and lovely, with a penchant stories both mythic and gothic, the Decemberists are not to be missed. The new album is a definite recommend if you're looking for something new, perhaps something to listen to while you play with your new marbled paper. Perhaps, it's just a suggestion.

I'm about to start a new batch of 2007 pocket cover dayplanners (like the one featured below) and will be offering day customizations for all special orders. Any special order for the basic $45 dayplanner* will include 12 day customizations free of charge, with a 50 cent charge per additional customization.

By popular request, I am also working on a new day planner format with a single page per day. This thicker, daily diary format will feature month/day marked pages that can be used for any year, and will be offered with the same day customization option as above. The daily diary book will retail for approx. $55 and will feature the same handy pocket cover design that you love.

The Decatur Book Festival was a success! I had fun, met some great people, and found good homes for quite a few books. Mr. Operation here was a huge hit but failed find a home. So what made the Decatur Book Festival so fun? Meeting people! I got to meet Kristin Saegaert, another local bookbinder and Etsy member and talk shop (or in our case, craft). If you're in the Atlanta area for Labor Day, swing by the Decatur Book Festival in lovely downtown Decatur. Not only does this event look amazing, you'll also be able to buy Re:Paper books at the Artist's Market! You can find the Re:Paper booth on West Court Square, along the west side of the historic Old Courthouse (and steps away from the Bandstand). Market hours are Saturday, September 2nd from 10am-6pm and Sunday, September 3rd from noon-5:30pm. I've been working hard with beautiful new papers and new book formats you wont want to miss. While your at the Festival, be sure to check out the amazing writiers and performers who will also be in attendance, see the official website for more. Hope to see you there!

Books left from the Atlanta Craft Mafia show are selling fast! Only four 2007 datebooks with interior pocket covers are still available: blue shadow (shown), red autumn, koi (with frame on front cover) and world map. The chain stitched signatures stay open and flat on your desk, with a whole week visible at a time on the two page spread. Perfect for your desk, the back of the planner has an address book and a section for notes making this the only book you'll need to track your year. Handy pockets in the front and back covers are perfect for holding business cards, photos, keepsakes and lists. If you are interested in snatching any of these up before they go to the shops, do let me know. The price is currently $45 each plus shipping and handling.
I am about to start production on the next round of planners, so get your order in now if you have specific colors or patterns that you'd like to see made (custom orders are available as always).
