Europeans over, now it’s time for North Americans to try out for Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi Pro – European Trails

The first European Trial for The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiujitsu Cup 2010 – second edition, happened last Saturday 12th December in UK. The Event was held on Dartford Judo Club where the British Olympic Judo Team trains.
The competition had 180 athletics from the different parts of Europe like England, France, Spain, Portugal, Polonia, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Irland, Scotland… and around 380 spectators who filled the entire place to see the best European jiu-jitsu fighters fighting for a place on the World Abu Dhabi Pro 2010.

The event started at 8:30 am with weigh in and at 9:45 the competition started with white belts first. Followed by blue belts, female absolute, then purple, brown and black belt.
And in the end, the very disputed white belt absolute had as a big fighter Daniel Agard, who won 2 categories. Blue 73 kg and absolute 73 kg.

More than an event well organized by Brazil’s Zé Marcello and England’s Jude Samuel, the European tryout for the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup was proof how Jiu-Jitsu is conquering ever-more peoples, cultures and nationalities.
Around the world, the other tryouts continue. If the World Cup Pro already has its qualified athletes from Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa, the one responsible for the qualifiers in the United States is Renato Tavares, our GMA and leader of ATT in Vero Beach.

“Two qualifiers will be held this year. One on the East Coast, with the help of Professor Helio Soneca, and on the West Cuast, where we have the experienced Cláudio França, who is responsible for the US Open and American Cup, in the organizing committee,” says Renato.

The East Coast event will take place in Boca Raton, Florida, at the FAU gymnasium, on January 31. And the one in California will be held at the Santa Cruz Civic Center on January 24.

The six champions of the adult purple/brown/black belt weight divisions will join the female champions and light and heavyweight white/blue belt absolute champions. The athletes will receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete in Abu Dhabi in April.

The African Trials gathered 102 athletes, coming from Angola, Madagascar, Congo, Swaziland and major cities in South Africa (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg). Regarded as the biggest bjj comp to happen in African soil, the tournament had an excellent level, with exciting fights throughout the day. There were many white belts that should be already fighting in the blue belt. The complete results are published in this blog, and soon a highlights video will be added. African Trials - Abu Dhabi BJJ World Pro Cup
In 2007 I made my first visit to South Africa, part of my mission to spread BJJ all over the World. I had no idea what to expect in terms of level and number of practitioners, and to be honest I did not expect much. Then I met some people involved with BJJ, Grappling and MMA in three of the major cities: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
The numbers were not big, but the level was not different from what I have seen previously in North America and Europe, the problem is that the Africans did not have BJJ comps and so even the best grapplers were not familiar with rules, competition strategies and this was their major gap. Without competing, we cannot develop our best techniques and grow to the highest level. Putting it simply, someone that drives a car on the streets will never have the same reflexes and experience of a Michal Schumacher or Ayrton Senna. If you want to be the best, the only way to prove yourself, fix your mistakes and reach the highest level is by competing. So Africa needed more BJJ competitions to help the sport grow and allow its athletes to perform their games under pressure.
In 2008, Carlos Santos asked me if Africa was ready to receive trials for Abu Dhabi. Fearing that numbers would be very small, I asked him to wait another year to give me time to prepare the ground for this important task. Then last August, with help of my students in Johannesburg, we held a small tournament and saw that conditions were ripe for a bigger comp.
When we confirmed the Trials and its format, we started to try and contact all the countries around, to make the trials an international event. We know that BJJ is growing in Egypt and Morocco, but those countries are closer to Abu Dhabi than to South Africa, so they would not come due to the distances. We managed to find gyms in Angola and Madagascar, but it seems that most countries on Sub Saharan Africa do not have BJJ clubs yet or at least we could not find it. We put a lot of effort to convince people that our competition was for real and that it would qualify 5 people to fight the most important BJJ comp in the World, with huge money prizes. Blogs, Facebook, e-mails and posters sent, but we still did not know if people would come and fight.
We expected between 50 and 70 competitors, but when we closed the entries one week before, we had over 100 people, coming from Angola, Madagascar, all parts of South Africa and even from Congo and Swaziland. This comp would be a mark for the sport in Africa, and it was. For the first time so many fighters had the chance to fight and meet each other, and the excitement could be felt in the air.
The competition run smoothly and after 9 hours of intense battles, we had results in 25 divisions, and 5 people qualified to fly to Abu Dhabi in April, 2010.
Level was higher than expected, numbers were great, people came from all corners of South Africa and beyond, and the competition established a record as the biggest BJJ comp ever to happen in South Africa. Looking for the road works behind schedule in Johannesburg, I am not sure if the country will be ready for the football World Cup, but it is definitely ready to claim a place in the BJJ family, with Johannesburg being the place to be next December for the Second Abu Dhabi African Trials.
When people come to Africa for safaris, most want to see and take pictures of the “Big 5”, the biggest animals to roam the savannas and forests of the continent (Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard). For us involved in the Trials, the Big 5 are the five winners of the Qualifiers, which will go to Abu Dhabi sponsored by FIJJA.
Wiekus Swart, Jessica Hill, Wesley George, Jared Halliday and Derrick Van Kelsen won their respective Absolute Divisions and now must train hard to fight people from around the World next April, with lot bigger chances than the SA football team in the World Cup.

THE Asian Jiu-Jitsu Super Cup championship got underway on Friday at the UAE Wrestling, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Federation hall in Abu Dhabi.
It has drawn 175 fighters from 25 countries.
The two-day, event is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the chairman of the competition is Lt Gen. Mohamed Hilal Al Kaabi, with Brazilian Carlos Santos as the event-organiser. The event is another chance for international and Emirates jiu-jitsu fighters to prepare themselves for the biggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event ever -the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010 -- that is also organized by Carlos Santos and approved by Federation International Jiu-Jitsu Association.

Three-time world champion Santos who has been in Abu Dhabi for the last eight years said Jiu Jitu has gained momentum and there are many Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts in this part of the world. "It has been a year of great achievements for Jiu Jitsu in the emirate. The martial art is being taught from school level. "The 'school jitsu project', which now comprises 42 schools and 14,000 children, are undergoing Jiu-Jitsu training in Abu Dhabi. The capital has arguably established itself as the capital of professional Jiu-Jitsu with the inaugural Mundial Pro being a huge success and the 2010 trials have already begun," said Santos who is also the head coach of the Emirates Team.

H.E. Mohammed bin Thaloub Al Darei - President of the UAE Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu Federation - welcomed the decision of H.E. Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais - Minister of Culture, Youth, and Community Development and President of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare - amending the name of the UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation to become the UAE Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu Federation in accordance to the Federation's letter dated 29/1, which specified the inclusion of Jiu-Jitsu from Higher Authorities to take care of the sport that saw the light in Abu Dhabi in 1998 with the support and attention directly from its founder, H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Godfather of Emirates Jiu-Jitsu.

The sport's base has expanded ever since at the state level, with the support of His Highness, the attention of the the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi and direct follow-up of Lieutenant-General (R) Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi - Club Chairman, and the efforts of world-renowned Brazilian Coach Carlos Santos as the sport continues to boom and interest rises under the the umbrella of the Federation's Council, which unanimously welcomed the inclusion of the sport so it can get more attention and care in preparation to host the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup next May in the United Arab Emirates Capital, Abu Dhabi and reflect the bright side of Jiu-Jitsu in the U.A.E., which has achieved many accomplishments at local, regional, and International levels and requires maintaning the good reputation that have been made during the last period in support of the individual sports, which also gets all the support from the leadership.

The upcoming World Cup will be the real start with the birth of the training centers around the country, especially student centers, which saw the light recently with the support from the Ministry of Education and the Abu Dhabi Education Council under the Emirate of Abu Dhabi with a view to sustain the activity in coordination with all parties to create a broad-based development with opportunities for refinement and friction for all training centers, with the ultimate goal of bolstering the national teams after the elite group of players have benefited from periods of training to learn the basics of the game, which guages the success of the sport so far between school students who represent the starting point to a bright future in Emirates Jiu-Jitsu with its new look.

Sheikh Tahnoon’s supported boy debuts in MMA with quick win
For more than ten years GRACIEMAG has been following Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed’s passion for Jiu-Jitsu.
His passion for the gentle art is so intense that it bore gigantic fruits like the ADCC and infected his brother, Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed – the one to provide the greatest incentive for Jiu-Jitsu projects in schools in the Emirates and professionalization of the sport through the Abu Dhabi Pro tournament.

Over the past ten years Tahnoon has provided his adoptive sons, then just kids who are now grown up in the army, with an intense training routine. These youths have conquered several medals in important tournaments from Japan to the USA. But, there was still one challenge left for the boys.

And it was on the evening of Saturday, the 28th, in Holland, at the Showtime MMA Gala event, that Hassan Alrumaithi, one of those adoptive sons of Tahnoon’s, needed exactly 28 seconds to sink a triangle on Dennis de Jong, Melvin Manhoef’s training partner, and prove that Tahnoon presented his country with the most effective fighting style invented by man.

Abu Dhabi Pro – European Trails
The Euro-UK trails for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-jitsu Cup 2010 will happen on 12 of December 2009. The event will be holding on Dadford Judo Club (Training Centre of the British Judo Team), that is around 15 minutes from London King Cross Station.
The main sponsors of this event are H.H. Sheik Mohamed Bin Zayed al Nahyan(as the principal supplier), FIJJA (Federation, International of Jiu-Jitsu Association), Abu Dhabi Pro and Kimonos Atama Europe, one of the most traditional brands of kimonos in the world.
We are expecting around 300 athletics and 800 spectators.
This event is organized by the Black Belt Jose Marcello Rodrigues (Zé Marcello), representative of Abu Dhabi Pro Europe and Jude Samuel, the most incentivise of this sport in UK.
At 8 am will start the weigh check and at 9 30 am will start the formalities forming the athletics and presenting flags with HINOS from UK and Abu Dhabi, following the official schedule that will be post on the web site http://www.abudhabi-pro.co.uk/ on December 9th.
We would like to invite all the jiu-jitsu lovers and all the public in general to come to join us on this event and make part of this big step o four Sport, and make Jiu-jitsu part of an Olympic event.

It is organizing the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship and numerous continental and regional qualifiers for that world championship event, which is scheduled to take place April 15-17, 2010, in Abu Dhabi.
