Time has published an article about NASA's ambitious new spacecraft, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, that will map the moon's surface, and will be looking for suitable future landing sites and a spot to build a lunar base. Japan, China, and India have all sent probes to the moon since 2007 and China is planning on sending more robot ships and then astronauts. Sounds like it could get a little crowded. I am glad to hear about NASA's plans because funding science and research should always be a priority, even in an economic downturn. The US used to be the leader in experimental particle physics, but when Congress pulled the plug on the Superconducting Super Collider and its $11 billion price tag in the 90s, that crown was passed to the collective nations of Europe. The European Center for Particle Physics (better known as CERN) has built the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. America will be watching the important knowledge that develops from the sidelines.

-Last Friday afternoon I went over to Deep Eddy pool for the first time with Raul, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was not overly crowded, they have designated lanes for swimming, and its an actual pool with a bottom that you can see. The water is piped in from adjacent springs on the banks of the Colorado river, so the pool is nice and cool and untreated with chemicals. It was a mingled crowd of young families and chilled-out hipsters, with plenty of room to spread out under the trees or in the sun. It made for a much more tranquil afternoon than fighting the masses at Barton Springs.

-After the swim, we picked up Joe and headed to the Domain to do a little shopping. A new Zara store opened, the first in Austin. As we were checking out, the sales guy was asking a bunch of questions about if we share clothes and what the rules are. It was amusing that he was so interested. We headed home and had a movie night - A Clockwork Orange. I'm going through a Kubrick phase. Up next - 2001 A Space Oddysey and Dr. Strangelove.

-Saturday evening we made dinner at home - grilled chicken with a lemon yogurt sauce and a special recipe for potato salad that I found. Then we met some friends downtown at La Condesa, a new-ish restaurant in the 2nd street district. Very nice atmosphere, with a cool Texas modern design. The best part though are the drinks - a m a z i n g. We had caipirinhas, but my favorite was the pitcher of margaritas - hands down the best margaritas that have ever crossed my lips. Supposedly, they employ one person who's sole job is to juice all the fruits and vegetables used in their drinks. After that, we hung out at Kiss & Fly.

-Joe had a soccer game early Sunday morning. While he was running around after a ball, I was snoozing peacefully in bed. It was one of those mornings that I lounged around in my undies till noon watching tv. I went for a walk in the sunshine in the afternoon. I kept trying to find someone to invite me to their swimming pool, but everyone was busy. Sunday night we had a yummy dinner at Dan's Hamburgers - cheeseburgers, fries, and a milkshake.

-Tomorrow we are heading to Dallas for the weekend. My best friend from my hometown is getting married and I am a groomsmen. I just received the itinerary today, and it looks likes its going to be a busy few days. Going to try to squeeze in seeing some friends and family somewhere in there too.

Afternoon in the Hill Country...

Yesterday, we spent the afternoon at the Hamilton Pool Preserve and Reimer Ranch Park. Just 25 miles west of Austin on the Pedernales River, it is an easy day trip. Central Texas has been suffering from a severe drought, and you can see that the Pedernales has been reduced to a small stream. To see the Pedernales River after heavy rain, check out a trip that we took a couple of years ago and posted about here.
