Poetry Workshop at Limerick Writers' Centre

Aspiring poets are invited to participate in a Poetry Workshop with poet Tim Cunningham at the Limerick Writers’ Centre, 12 Barrington Street, Limerick Sat 25th Oct 2008 starting at 10.00am and running to 12.00 noon. Tim Cunningham was born in Limerick in 1942 and educated at Limerick C.B.S. and Birkbeck College, London. He has lived in Limerick, Tipperary, Dublin, Trowbridge, London, Newark (Delaware) and, presently, Billericay. He has published and read widely. His first collection, ‘Don Marcelino’s Daughter’ was published by Peterloo Poets in 2001 and reprinted in 2002 and 2004. His second collection ‘Unequal Thirds’ was published in 2006, again by Peterloo. His new collection, Kyrie, is shortly to be published (Oct 16th) by Revival Press - the imprint of the White House Poets. ‘Kyrie’, is firmly rooted in nineteen fifties’ Ireland – De Valera’s Ireland – a place and time, apparently so distant now, when religion permeated almost every aspect of life. And it is the lives that are celebrated here, with their pieties, loves, frustrations and hopes, the perennial human condition woven into the sacraments and liturgies of the everyday. Not quite the Limerick of Angela’s Ashes but nevertheless Tim Cunningham has continued on where Frank Mc Court left off but this time in poetry and verse.

Revival Press and the White House Poets to launch Tim Cunningham's new book of poems in October.

Limerick-born Tim Cunningham’s third poetry collection, ‘Kyrie’, is firmly rooted in nineteen fifties’ Ireland – De Valera’s Ireland – a place and time, apparently so distant now, when religion permeated almost every aspect of life. And it is the lives that are celebrated here, with their pieties, loves, frustrations and hopes, the perennial human condition woven into the sacraments and liturgies of the everyday. Not quite the Limerick of Angela's Ashes but nevertheless Tim Cunningham has continued on where Frank Mc Court left off but this time in poetry and verse.

These poems should be enjoyed not only by regular poetry readers but by anybody interested in the history and culture of a country in an era of profound and unrelenting change.

This exciting and intriguing must-have publication from the ever-energetic Revival Press in Limerick rightly lauds the city’s favourite son. Richard Harris is presented here in a set of drawings by Co. Clare artist, Thomas Delohery, entitled ‘Poemtraits,’ as they are nicely accompanied by interpretations, if you like, from Cuisle festival organiser and Limerick poet, Mark Whelan. The poems and drawings first coincided at the Friar’s Gate Theatre exhibition in 2006, ‘Richard Harris: a Life,’ which subsequently toured a number of venues in the West. The second section of the book was written ‘in response to Yellow Shark, composed by Frank Zappa and performed by Ensemble Moderne, conducted by Frank Zappa.’ A working of some poems from this section waspresented by Jazz guitarist, Tom Harte, along with Mark Whelan, in the United Arts Club in Dublin, in association with Dublin poet, Kevin Byrne. So what you get here is not only a just paean to Harris but an acknowledgement of how poetry and music work together, collaborating and recontextualising one another. This in itself makes for considerable poetic innovation - and Irish contemporary poetry is not known for innovation, so it is refreshing to see it here. The illustrations and the poems to Harris work brilliantly; not for the first time, one wonders at how so many poets are drawn to work from visual images. This is an important book, and not just for lovers of the work and memory of Richard Harris; it is about collaboration between visual art and the written word, between the visually enacted and the verbally enacted and Harris would have known something about that as an actor. Good poetry and good art, conspiring to make a very good book. Congratulations, therefore, to poet, visual artist and publisher.

Poets from Limerick, Ireland, the UK and America are to be found within the covers of a new poetry journal produced by the WhiteHousePoets. Echoeing the famous White House Poetry Revival readings the new title is called REVIVAL and is set to continue on where their first publication Microphone On left off. The launch of REVIVAL will take place during this years Cuisle Poetry Festival on the 18th October 2006 in the White House pub - the spiritual home of poetry in Limerick.
The new journal is to be published four times per year and it is set to take its place among Irelands foremost poetry periodicals.

Revival - a journal of contemporary poetry.

The White House Poets have for the past five years held their White House Poetry Revival readings in the White House pub in Limerick City, Ireland. The readings have been very successful with a mix of local, national and international poets reading their work to an always appreciative audience. Over a year ago Microphone On - an anthology of poetry read at the White House was published. Now the White House Poets bring you 'Revival' a journal of contemporary poetry, in chapbook format, to be published four times per year.

Submission guidelines

Send a maximum of five poems.*
Send copies, not originals.
No hand written texts.
Poems should be original, previously unpublished and not currently
submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.
Poems should be typed, with the author's name on each sheet.
If sending by post include an SAE (min.size C5) to ensure return of poems.
Poets should include an up to date short (2 or 3 lines) biography.
Poems submitted by email should be in the body of the email (see note on formatting) and as a Word attachment.

Format.
The format of “Revival” will be A5 Chapbook (5 1/2 by 8 ½) with 48 pages plus cover.

The Editor will acknowledge receipt of your poems (email or SAE only) and inform you of any publication date.
Contributors will receive a copy of the issue in which their work appears. Include a postal address for contributor's copy.

*Note: Due to the restrictions of the Chapbook format we request that the poems submitted require no special formatting and should be, ideally, not more than 32 lines plus a title also please remember that lines longer than 65 characters, including spaces, will run over onto the next line; so in order to prevent line drops in formatting try and keep the poems within this guideline.
