Summer Camp

Summer camp has come and gone. Thanks to Sensei Bob and all the rest of the Sensei for hosting a great camp. Guelph was well represented with 9 karate ka as well as Sensei Wolfgang making an appearence.
We want to congratulate Hanshi Douglas Roberts on his promotion to 9th dan as well as Sensei James (Ottawa) and Sensei Mike (Guelph)who were recommended for 4th and 3rd dan.
Summer camp this year taught us much about commitment and determination with Hanshi Douglas Roberts leading the way.
Next on the agenda will be Kingstons tournament scheduled for November 3.

Once again, to see if the students have improved in fitness levels. We did max pushups in 1 min, max situps in 1 min and max squats in 1 min.

Also remember that Senpai counted this testing (which means only good reps counted!) and the testing in Nov/Dec was counted partially by other students.

GKD Junior Tournament 2007

A whole bunch of news here! Starting with a big thank you to all of the participants and parents at our 2nd annual tournament. We had groups attend from Ottawa, Kingston, London and Mississauga as well as Guelph. See the picture of the whole group below.

We were very proud of our students - they performed with spirit and determination. Tsuyoshi followed in his brother's footsteps by winning the GKD Burpee award. Chris was the recipient of the Male Spirit Award and Madeleine was the recipient of the female Spirit Award. A number of promotions took place:

4th kyu - Michael and Haley
7th kyu - Chris
8th kyu - Elsha and TJ
9th kyu - Chandler

Congratulations to all of these students. There are also a few students that are very close to promotion - keep working hard. In addition to the mudansha promotions there were also some yudansha promotions:

1st dan - Sensei Maia
2nd dan- Sensei Glen
4th dan - Sensei Chris
7th dan - Sensei Bob and Sensei Rick

A huge thank you to the seniors, Hanshi Roberts, Sensei Bob and Sensei Rick for coming out, and a personal thank you to Sensei Wolf for attending. Once again, congratulations to all of the participants - we saw some excellent kata and shiai. Thanks to Sensei Jim and Greg for getting everything on video!

London Kohaku

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the recent Kohaku, hosted by the Ken Shin dojo in London. Special recognition goes to Tsuyoshi and Madeleine. Tsuyoshi won five fights for the second time and was promoted to orange stripe. Madeleine was participating in her first tournament and won three fights. Congratulations Madeleine! The Guelph team fought hard and we are happy with all of your performances. A big thank you to the parents that came out to support the club and to the parents that drove. As well, thanks to the host dojo for a great spring tournament.

The black belts also had an opportunity to learn a bo form from Sensei Hawthorne, for which we are very appreciative.

Events update

As mentioned in the previous post we have set a date for the 2nd annual GKD junior tournament (April 28, 2007). In addition, we have firm dates for two other tournaments. The closest is at the London dojo and will be held on March 24. Cost is $10 and start time is 10 am. This is a kohaku or team fighting competition. Full rules and details are available on the London website (see the links page). We will also likely be attending the St. Jerome tournament held at the end of May. More details on these to follow.

Long term, we can plan on the annual Shorinjiryu Kudaka summer camp in August and the Kingston Kohaku in October/November.

We have finally set the date for the 2nd Annual GKD Junior Tournament, this year it will be held on April 28. Hopefully this will allow everyone to participate. Below is a picture of the club taken recently. We will be adding it to the main page soon.

So here are the results of the fitness testing we did recently. Really sorry about the formatting, but I couldn't figure out how to make a nice table. Pushups, situps and squats were done for 1 minute, wall sit was for as long as possible. The fitness testing is not for competition, but to give everyone a place to work from. We expect higher scores next time.

Happy Holidays!

We have some news to announce - Stephen was promoted to 8th kyu, and TJ to 9th kyu. Congratulations to both. As well, Senpai Maia tested for Shodan and has been awarded her club black belt. Recognition from the federation will come in about 6 months time, after the probationary period.

We will have some classes cancelled over the Holiday season, there will be no regularly scheduled Saturday classes and in particular there will be no class on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

We have been very busy lately and are a little behind on updates. First we took 7 students to the Kingston Tournament, Chad, Chris, Santiago, Tsuyoshi, Elsha, Michael and Haley. Our super fantastic, number 1 karate parent, Greg, drove. The students all performed well, with Haley, Chad and Chris getting recognized for spirit. Big thanks to the Kobura Dojo for hosting as well.

We also have some promotions to announce:

Kingston Kohaku Announcement

The Kingston Kobura Dojo will be holding thier annual Kohaku on Saturday, Nov. 4. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. We will be looking into van rental to see if we can travel together. More details to follow.

We also want to congratulate Chris on his promotion to 8th kyu, it is well deserved.

Finally, we have a number of new students that we would like to welcome to the dojo. We are so happy to have you a part of the class.

September Promotions

Congratulations to Haley and Tsuyoshi. Both students have been promoted based on their performance at the recent Kohaku in London, ON. Haley is now a 5th kyu orange belt, and Tsuyoshi is a 6th kyu orange belt.

We have also announced testing for a number of other students.

London Tournament Results

WE just returned from the London kohaku. Thank you Hawthorne Sensei and to the parents who got everyone there and back safe and sound.
The Guelph club was impressive. Only losing kata to each other and demonstrating an all around sense of spirit and determination. Every one of our students surpassed expectations. You should all be proud of yourselves. Congratulations to Chris, Chad, T.J, Elsha, Stephen, and John. All of whom were attending a tournament for the first time.

Although there are no individual results in a Kohaku ( team ) tournament we have to give special mentions to Michael, Tsuyoshi, and Haley. Tsuyoshi and Haley have been recommended for promotion after both won five fights in a row ( both beating brown belts ) while Michael lost his fifth fight to a 16 year old Mississauga Blue belt. Well done all of you!

Thank You also to Sensei Glenn and Senpai Maia. Sensei Glenn was one of the team captains and won both his Kata and fight while also serving as a punching bag for the juniors on his team. Maia Senpai won her fight and lost a controversial contest in her Kata match.

London Kohaku

We are a little behind in updating...but we are off (with ALL of the students) to the London Kohaku tournament tomorrow - hosted by the Shorinjiryu Kenshin Dojo. It should be an excellent training opportunity and lots of fun!

Summer Camp 2006

Sensei Michael and Sempai Maia and two students from Guelph Kudaka Kids Dojo (Chris and Chad) went to summer camp this year. Summer camp was hosted by the Kobura Dojo from Kingston at Presquile Park.

The camp was a great success with participants from Mississauga, Guelph, Ottawa and Kingston participating. Training was hard (as usual) with 8 hours of training on Saturday and another 4 hours on Sunday. Training sessions included throwing and self defense, knife defense and bokkan work, as well as the usual 7am runs, kata work and bogu sessions.

A special mention to Chris and Chad, who were the only juniors (and the only white belts) that participated in the full camp. They showed true karate spirit. Sempai Maia was confirmed for Shodan Testing in November, and Sensei Chris was nominated for 4th dan and Sensei Marc tested for 3rd dan.

A big thanks to Sensei Bob and Sensei Jean Erik for all the hard work, we'll be back next year.

Shorinjiryu Kudaka Summer Camp 2006

Summer camp is coming up!! As in the past, this year's summer camp will be held at Presqu'ile Provincial Park in Brighton ON. The camp will be held from Friday evening August 11 until Sunday afternoon August 13. The camp welcomes all Kudaka students and thier families and friends. The host dojo is Kabura Dojo in Kingston. Karate students will spend a fair bit of time in formal and informal classes. This is a great opportunity to learn from other senior instructors in the federation. We will all be camping at a group camping site, but individuals and families are responsible for thier own transportation, camping equipment and food. Cost is about $25/person + cost of entry to the park - there will be deals for families, but I don't have the details yet. Please let me know if you are interested.
