Phex is a file sharing program running on the Gnutella Network. It will run on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris, and other operating systems supporting Java 1.4.
Phex supports the latest Gnutella protocol, swarming downloads, multiple searches and many other advanced features.

The main focus of this maintainance release is to solve the most pressing download problems
reported to us. Downloads that were growing beyond there total file size, segments not forming
to a single file and corrupted segment data.
The problem occured when you were unlucky during a shutdown causing Phex to run into a
synchronization bug that left segments in a unclean state.

It's recommended to update immediatly and we would be very thankful for every report of problems
you find.

Phex 2.8 is now available for download and comes with the following enhancements.

New Download Engine

With this release Phex features a completely rewritten download engine. It is much more stable, offers faster overall download speed, allows easy file previews, and gives you a more in-depth view of what is going on behind the scenes.
You will have a multi-part progress bar, that shows you exactly what parts of the file you have already downloaded and what your sources are sharing.
You can adjust the internal download part selection algorithm to choose if you like to download the least available file parts first, prioritize the file beginning, end or both or if Phex should select parts completely random.

UDP Host Cache Support

Phex comes with a new UDP host cache support. UDP host caches are used as an distributed bootstrapping system to connect to the network much faster then before. Thanks to Madhu for the implementation.

Phex Updates

With this release Phex offers the ability to download future Phex releases directly within Phex multi-source download engine. All that's left for you to do is to install the completed download. Thanks go to ArneBab for this feature.

GTK-Gnutella 0.93 released
A GTK+ Gnutella client for Unix, efficient, reliable and fast, written in C. It has been optimized for speed and scalability, with low-memory consumption. It is meant to be left running 24x7, using little CPU and only the configured bandwidth.

These are some of the changes made since 0.92.1 stable:

* GTK-Gnutella now support both Partial File serving, as a client as well as a server. As soon as a download is started, can be used as an alternate source for others even though the download is not completed yet.
* When a mismatch happens during downloading the file can now be automatically removed and restarted again.
* Improved GUI to specify better which downloads should be cleared from the list (completed, failed, unavailable) - Collects alternate download locations aquired from query hits.
* Support for hostname instead of only an ip. If you have a dynamic ip but got a static hostname, for example a .dyndns.org address, gtk-gnutella can try to connect to the ip associated with the hostname.
* Sends out alternate locations which should not be tried.
* Won't send full headers when short on bandwith.
* Any changes in settings are now automatically saved, there is no need to quit the client anymore to make sure the settings are saved.
* Running gtk-gnutella in Auto peermode should no longer cause a crash.
* New addresses in hostiles.txt to protected against malicious hosts.
* gwcache.boot was cleaned up. Dead links were removed.
* Remote control should actually work without crashing gtk-gnutella.
* The build problems which occured in 0.92.1 due to the switch to metaconfig should be (mostly) gone.
* Code cleanup to build on more platforms.
* GTK2 interface currently does not have a maintainer, not all options which are available in the GTK1 interface might have made it in the GTK2 interface. (0 comments)

Phex 2.8.8 focuses on bug fixes and optical improvements. We present Phex with a new set of icons, which we hope are more appealing to you then the old icon set. Additionally we solved a few problems with firewall detection and the OSX release.
Very likely Phex 2.8.8 will be the last release supporting Java 1.4. From now on development will switch the to Java 5 and it will be required for the next major release Phex 3.0. Major or critical bugs might be back ported to the Phex 2.8.x release line, but this will have low priority. If you are interested in maintaining a Java 1.4 release line, please contact us.

In case you like to help us developing and improving Phex, please let us know. Developers are always wanted!
