Calendula comes from the Latin kalendae,"first day of the month" in the Roman calendar, since they can be found in flower at the beginning of most months of the year. "Marigold" refers to its link with the Virgin Mary.
In Egypt, the Calendula arvensis is called " kahleh ;" and in this. word, we recognise the kaaxan of Alem?n, Epicharmus (c. 540 and c. 450 BCE), Nicolaus Damascenus (c.64 BCE), and Athenceus xv. 28.
Alire Raffeneau Delile (1778 - 1850), a French botanist, found the Calendula arvensis growing spontaneously around Cairo; and the Calendula officinalis, in gardens at Alexandria.
Calendula arvense seems to have therapeutic properties. It is antiseptic. Some constituents are antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral.

Helichrysum sanguineum, the Red Everlasting,(דם-מכבים אדום blood of the Maccabees), is a symbol for the Israeli Memorial Day for the Israeli Fallen Soldiers and the Victims of Terrorism (Yom Hazikaron), which falls in late April or May.
In Israel Red Everlasting has the same symbolism as in Britain the red poppy, to symbolise the blood of the fallen on Flanders field in World War I, and so became the flower worn on Remembrance Sunday, the Sunday nearest to 11 November.

Itzhak Sadeh, ("The old man") (1890-1952) the commander of the Palmach units, a soldier, a writer and an educator, explained to the young Israeli tzabbarim the source of Israeli heroism and the uniqueness of the death of fighters in Israel, as distinct from the death of Jews in other places.
The Macabees are described as a symbol of "fighting without fear - for faith, the right to faith, for the homeland, to live free in the homeland, self-defense, to stand in battle and in the end, victory. And their blood, let's say it in all simplicity and confidence, flows in our veins. We are exactly like them. If a drop of our blood falls on the soil of our homeland, a flower will grow… small and red - dam hamakabim (Helichrysum sanguineum). Only in this land, the homeland, does this flower grow amongst the other flowers … dam hamakabim".
Many people wear stickers bearing an image of this flower and the Hebrew word nizkor-"We will remember", distributed on Memorial Day in schools and public meetings.

On the occasion of the Sixth Independence Day a stamp was issued with the inscription "Yehiam" and on the tab the inscription: ''Independence Day 5714-1954'' ''Memorial Day for the Fighters for Independence'' (designer Otte Wallish).

"Dam Hamakabim" - blood of the Maccabees is the only helichrysum found in Israel.

“avad ala’v ha-kelah” - אבד עליו הכלך

Ferula is a very fast growing plant, that reaches a height of 2 meters and more. The flowering stem’s unbelievable growth speed can rank the Ferula as a symbol of vitality and growth power, and perhaps this is the origin of the Hebrew saying: “avad ala’v ha-kelah”, meaning “has grown old and irrelevant” (the Hebrew word for Ferula is “Kelah”; “avad ala’v” means “has been lost”). This saying comes from the book of Job:
Yea, the strength of their hands,
whereto should it profit me?
men in whom ripe age is perished.
גַּם-כֹּחַ יְדֵיהֶם, לָמָּה לִּי; עָלֵימוֹ, אָבַד כָּלַח

This explanation is supported by the fact that the Ferula ripens and dries out just as quickly as it grows and this interpretation connects with another verse in Job, which is part of a description of the life of a man who is blessed by God:
"Thou shalt come to thy grave in a ripe age,
like as a shock of corn cometh in in its season".
תָּבוֹא בְכֶלַח אֱלֵי-קָבֶר; כַּעֲלוֹת גָּדִישׁ בְּעִתּוֹ.
_{Job 5:26} According to this verse, a man who has lost his “kelah”, the symbol of vitality and growth power, has lost his vitality and ability. If a man arrives at his grave “at a ripe age”, it means he dies at his right time, but reaches the end of the road still vital and strong.
