Can Natural Gas Lanterns Be Used Indoors?

Indoor Gas Lights

Gas lanterns can create a beautiful atmosphere inside as well as outside. I have had customers that have wanted to add lanterns to their wine cellars. Restaurants as well have requested indoor lanterns. This photo is an example of gas lanterns installed in a restaurant setting. Be warned though--they generate heat.

Natural gas is lighter than air. It will dissipate into the atmosphere. So natural gas lanterns that are installed outside will not pose a problem. But when natural gas is confined indoors, gas concentrations can reach explosive mixtures and, if ignited, result in blasts that could destroy buildings. Processed natural gas is harmless to the human body, however, natural gas is a simple asphyxiant and can kill if it displaces air to the point where the oxygen content will not support life.

All of our lanterns are CSA Certified for the utmost in safety standards. Look for the seal in the floor of the lantern. Depending on the requirements, some custom lanterns may not be certified. If using lanterns indoors an automatic shutoff valve or electronic ignition is recommended. Then if the flame goes out the lantern will automatically shut off or re-light itself. Dark Sky Ordinances

Do your Gas Lanterns comply with "Dark Sky Ordinances"?

Yes, open flame burners do not emit enough light to be measurable. The open flame burner is suitable for areas with "Dark Sky Ordinances" and does not contribute to light pollution.

Windguard

Windguards are a great feature and an inexpensive solution for lanterns that are exposed to windy conditions. The prices of windguards start at around $15. They are a copper sleeve that fits over the stem of the burner and covers the area where the gas flame originates. Lanterns that have electronic ignition do not need a windguard as the flame will continue to relight. Here is a photo of a windguard.

Finish Options

Copper Lanterns age gracefully over time and create a natural protective coating or patina. New lanterns are dipped in acid to remove fingerprints and smudges before being shipped to our clients. The acid dip makes the lanterns appear shiny like a new penny. Clients can choose to have their lanterns dipped in a chemical that will facilitate the patina process. A single dip will create a brown finish like a penny. A double dip will be very dark brown so it almost looks black. Lanterns can be sprayed with a chemical to start a green patina that is similar to the Statue of Liberty. If you want your lanterns to start to turn green you can spray them with salt water. I have had customers who wanted the green patina but were disappointed when they received them. They were expecting it to be green. It is green but it is more like an organic process. The patina is not like a green paint. It is a natural chemical process so it is different than paint. The benefit of a copper patina is that you never have to clean it and it will last a lifetime.

Finishes are a natural process so a lot of factors determine the exact shade. Weather conditions, temperatures, humidity etc will affect the color of the finish. Be sure to wear gloves when handling lanterns that have a finish on them. It takes a couple of months for it to become hard. If you don't wear gloves you will leave fingerprints.

Receiving Lanterns by Freight

Here are some tips for receiving Freight Deliveries.

Count the pieces received against the driver's delivery receipt. Count the boxes. If over or short, note it on both your copy and the freight company copy of the delivery receipt.

Inspect the boxes for obvious damage at the time of delivery.

Identify or describe the missing/damaged item(s).

Before you sign the bill - write "May have concealed damage." If you do not write this on the bill, you are responsible for any damage not noted at time of delivery. If there is visible damage of the box, you need to open the box and inspect further before signing the delivery receipt. If you suspect internal damage, open immediately! If the driver or agent does not want to allow this, sign the bill "received subject to further inspection". Conduct this further inspection at once and if concealed damage is discovered, it must be reported to the carrier within 15 days.

Have driver sign also noting any shortage or damage.

Notify us as soon as possible regarding any damage/shortage so that we may assist you with investigating and/or filing a claim.

Keep any damaged goods and their packaging materials for later inspection.

Even if no damaged is suspected, open the carton within 24 hours and make a thorough inspection.

Benefits of Copper for Gas Lanterns

Copper Lanterns are maintenance free and designed to last a lifetime. The natural oxidation process creates a patina which provides a natural barrier to the elements and creates a protective coating. While other metals will deteriorate, copper will stabilize as it ages. Metal will rust without a protective coating, aluminum will deteriorate through electrolytic corrosion, brass will pit unless maintained through periodic polishing and stainless steel will stain. If exposed to salt water conditions the patina will turn green like the Statue of Liberty. Otherwise your lanterns will age into a dark brown like a copper penny. All you need to do is clean the glass in your lanterns from time to time and dust them.
