William Sonnenschein

U. C. Berkeley lost a good friend and remarkable individual a few days ago. Bill Sonnenschein passed away in Madagascar, of an intense gastric illness. Bill was a senior lecturer at Haas since 1992 and helped thousands of students improve their communication and leadership skills. He was accompanied by his wife and daughter at the time of his death. Bill had been serving as a special advisor to the President of Madagascar for the last few months. The President, commenting on Bill's contributions to his country, indicated that Bill had been by far the most effective advisor that he had ever had. Bill was also intimately involved in the Environmental Leadership Program at the College of Natural Resources. His work there helped to train environmental leaders from more than sixty countries. More details will follow. He will be missed.

Stan Christensen started his career working in corporate finance on Wall Street, then worked as a negotiation advisor with the consulting arm of The Harvard Negotiation Project. In this capacity he traveled to over 75 countries and worked with corporations and governments, negotiating transactions and mediating conflicts- from hostage situations to disputes between neighboring countries.

Tata International Social Entrepreneurship Scheme - deadline November 25

The Tata Group, one of India's largest private sector conglomerates and a global leader in innovative corporate social responsibility initiatives, launched the Tata International Social Entrepreneurship Scheme (TISES) earlier this year. The primary objective of TISES is to provide international students with opportunities to contribute to community initiative projects of Tata Group companies in India and in so doing to promote international understanding.

University of California Berkeley and Cambridge University in the UK are the first two participating universities. Berkeley will identify up to six upper division undergraduate or graduate students for 8-week summer TISES internships with Tata Group's community initiative programs. The internships will begin o/a June 1, 2009.

Global Management Skills Course offered in January

Ernest Gundling will be offering the Global Management Skills course again in January, 2009. The course addresses practical skills for global managers. It examines common issues and best practices for managing a global workforce as well as relations with customers and partners. Specific skill areas covered include establishing credibility, building relationships, obtaining information, evaluating people, giving & receiving feedback, training & development, meeting management, sales & marketing, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Beyond such person-to-person skills, global organization development and consulting skill areas such as multicultural team building, knowledge transfer, innovation, and change management are also covered. Geographical examples are drawn from Asia, Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Latin America, and North America. Course readings will be supplemented by meetings with professionals in the field, web-based assessment tools, video materials, case studies, and simulations of common situations by course participants. International students at Berkeley are encouraged to attend, and have been very successful course participants in the past.
Dr. Gundling is a co-Founder and co-President of Aperian Global and acts as a Senior Asia specialist, assisting clients in developing strategic global approaches to leadership, organization development, and relationships with key business partners; coaching executives with global responsibilities and works with multicultural management teams to help them formulate business plans based upon strong mutual understanding and a joint commitment to execution. Dr. Gundling holds a Ph.D. and a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University.

Patrick Awuah, Haas MBA 1999, Founder and President of Ashesi University, Ghana.
Before founding Ashesi, Patrick worked as a Program Manager for Microsoft Corporation. He holds bachelor degrees in Engineering and Economics from Swarthmore College, and an MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. In 2004, Swarthmore awarded Patrick an honorary doctorate in recognition of his leadership in African higher education. Patrick Awuah was nominated a Global Leader 2007 by the World Economic Forum; and in recognition of his service to Ghana, was awarded Membership of the Order of the Volta by His Excellency, President J. A. Kufuor. He is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (a branch of The Aspen Global Leadership Network), a member of the United States Council on Foreign Relations, the Pacific Council on International Policy, and the United States Tau Beta Pi honor society for excellence in engineering.

Blakemore Foundation Fellowship Opportunities

The Blakemore Foundation, with support of the Freeman Foundation, awards grants each year for the advanced study of languages such as modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other Southeast Asian languages. The grants fund a year of academic study at a university in Asia, and are intended for those pursuing professional, academic or business careers involving the regular usage of an Asian language.

The Blum Center for Developing Economies and the Center for South Asia Studies at UC Berkeley have entered into a unique three-year partnership with Tata, the largest privately held conglomerate in India, to provide students the opportunity to intern directly with community initiatives in India.

The first crop of interns is now back on campus, having spent eight weeks in various parts of rural India working on projects that included the development of sustainable and fair Water Codes, the exploration of Sustainable Livelihoods for a community that can no longer survive on farming alone, and the development of HIV/AIDS curriculum for high school students to be offered in the schools.

To highlight the amazing opportunities of this Tata Partnership, Berkeley will host a student symposium on Friday, September 19th, from 1-4 pm at the International House that is open to the campus community and public. The symposium will feature short presentations by Berkeley's Tata interns, highlighting their work this summer. Another student panel will feature Berkeley undergrads who participated in global practice experiences this summer as part of the Blum Center's Global Poverty and Practice Minor.

Information will be available for students who might wish to participate in either program next summer.

Mr. Kaida joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in April 1983 and, since then, he has had broad experience in the Service, Planning, Marketing Development, Product Planning and Technical Administration Divisions. In January 2007, Mr. Kaida created the BR Corporate Value Project Department and he has been the General Manager of this Department ever since. The Clausen Center for International Business and Policy will be hosting its annual International Business Development conference on Friday, September 26. This conference features presentations by the 20 IBD consulting teams who have just completed their overseas assignments. This year, teams worked for the National Parks Administration in Rwanda, Nokia in Finland, The Government of Albania and Vietnam National University in Hanoi, amongst others. In total, 20 teams completed assignments in countries as varied as Zambia and El Salvador, Brazil and Finland and China and Cambodia.
