Phoenixville is gearing up for another crazy celebration of The Blob, science fiction, and all things 1950's. The weekend long event will feature the annual "running out" reenactment on Friday night, followed by the Blob Ball, a 1950's themed ball featuring The Rivers Rockabilly Trio, a specialty menu of delightful drinks, and alot of dancing. (see more on Blob Ball below). On Saturday the 200 block of Bridge Street will be shut down for a street fair, including appearances by The Neanderthals, a tin foil hat contest and a scary movie costume contest. Every year this event grows with approximately 6,000 people attending last year.

Iron Town Productions and Molly Maguires Irish Restaurant and Pub in Phoenixville have teamed up to produce the 2nd Annual Blob Ball. Last year, the event was held at Tyler James Pub and was a huge hit, drawing from the crowd that comes to Phoenixville, PA every year to participate in the Colonial Theatre’s BlobFest. The Blob Ball received national coverage by AMC and the Boston Globe last year. Music will be provided by The Rivers Rockabilly Trio, one of the areas hottest Rockabilly bands, featuring the hits of the 1950’s. The night will feature dancing, a thematic menu of drinks, and contests. Prizes will be awarded for Best 50’s Dress (male & female), Best 50’s Celebrity Costume, Best Scary Movie Costume, and Best Dancers. Blob Ball will start right after the “running out” reenactment at the Colonial Theatre (around 9 PM) and will continue until midnight.

This event is the kick-off party for BlobFest weekend. “Last year, Stu Fredericks (The Rivers Rockabilly Trio) and I, started this event because there was a void in the activities after the “running out” reenactment at the Colonial Theatre”, states Jane Tucker of Iron Town Productions. “Since people are already out and dressed in their 50’s best for the “running out”, this gives them a place to go and celebrate all things 1950’s.”

Tickets for the 2nd Annual Blob Ball are $12 in advance and $15 on the date of the event. Space is limited and it is anticipated that this event will sell out in advance of the date. Tickets are available in person at Steel City Coffee House or online at www.steelcitycoffeehouse.com, click on Events.

For more information on Blob Ball, visit http://steelcitycoffee.stores.yahoo.net/stcipr2ndanb.html.

JWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04519709180822160333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29962318.post-78755594245648322722009-07-08T20:11:00.003-04:002009-07-08T20:14:45.719-04:00Girls on the Run is in need of volunteer coaches!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;width: 200px; height: 164px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qpVOgkrFjwk/SlU2YgUpppI/AAAAAAAAAUc/h6brb3R8bFA/s200/GOTR_logo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356247126448383634" />Girls on the Run is coming to a school near you and we need Coaches!

Girls on the Run is a 12 week character building fitness program for girls ages 8-11 that uses the power of running to help prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. We can enjoy our lives and feel connected, useful, needed, and happy during the later stages of life. This is a cultural task for our community.

Petra will give an overview of today’s elder situation in Germany with respect to the holistic approach of community living. Armgard will further explain this through story-telling and examples from her daily experience as a nurse in palliative care, and she will lead us to a deeper understanding of our humanity in old age.

What are their experiences from the model community Haus Rengold, which Petra and Armgard developed in Germany? How did it all come together? Why is community living, giving and receiving, the very essence of humanity — why is this of such importance when we grow older?

Petra will provide insights into the spatial structure, as well as practical aspects, financial and social, of Haus Rengold community.

This will set the tone for our work together on Saturday, July 11, 8:30 am to 5 pm, where we will introduce concepts and models for our cultural task and explore solutions. From the Joanna1 website:

Joanna1 is the product of many years of education, hard work & life experience. Building upon an eclectic art-based background in illustration, computer art and art instruction, I have designed and created a unique line of jewelry. My interest in making usable, wearable art led me to explore the use of precious metal clay as a medium.

Working primarily with silver PMC I produced a line of jewelry that is high quality yet casual. My work is inspired by our natural environment as well as human spirituality. In a fast-paced age where so much is mass produced, I want to stress the value in the sanctity of the original. Each piece of jewelry is designed and hand-crafted by me, so no two pieces are identical. I let what I would like to wear dictate my designs. I extend my love for the art-making process to others through my jewelry.

My goal is to get the message out that one must do what they love and love what they do. Inner peace comes from within...but why not start with an inspiring piece of jewelry?

JWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04519709180822160333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29962318.post-28303226359560131762009-06-29T20:10:00.004-04:002009-06-29T21:23:20.156-04:00Help Save the St. John’s United Church of Christ Organic Community Garden and LabyrinthI received the following in an email recently:

In the last week, both the President of the United States (through Serve.gov) and the First Lady (at the White House Garden Harvest Party) have strongly encouraged community gardens as providers of fresh produce to neighbors in need and as engines of creating healthier communities.

Besides planting her own organic garden at the White House, the First Lady has been advocating, when asked, for the preservation of specific community gardens throughout the United States.

With this in mind, the folks at the Community Garden have started a petition that will be sent to Mrs. Obama in the hope that she may be able to step in and help to preserve the garden. Dennis Weaver stars in Steven Spielberg’s first notable film, a truly scary made-for-TV exercise in paranoia. A traveling businessman is menaced on the highway by a huge diesel truck. Although he can never see the psychopathic truck driver, he soon realizes that this guy is out to kill him. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Those who stay for an informal discussion following the screening may suggest a forthcoming movie. For more information, call 610-933-3013, Ext. 32. Phoenixville Public Library is located at 183 Second Avenue in Phoenixville.

JWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04519709180822160333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29962318.post-54497400166664598892009-06-17T21:59:00.003-04:002009-06-17T22:04:10.634-04:00DVRPC to Present 422 Plan Recommendations at Open HousesThe Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), in conjunction with PennDOT, SEPTA, and Montgomery, Chester, and Berks counties, is hosting two open houses to present findings of the US 422 Corridor Master Plan.

This is an opportunity for the public to comment on preliminary recommendations, including smart growth initiatives and land use strategies; highway and transit improvements, including the R6 Extension; and an implementation plan.
