Indonesia lacking in oil experts

Indonesia is facing a lack of experts in oil following the limited capacity of higher learning institutions in the country to produce skilled engineers employed in foreign oil mining companies.

Prof Dr Sudarto Notosewiyo, Dean of the Mining and Oil Faculty of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), said here on Friday, adding that three higher learning institutions like ITB, UPN Veteran and Trisakti, produced only 280 to 300 oil engineers annually.

Ideally, Indonesia needs at least 500 oil engineers each year to meet the need for foreign oil experts in other countries.

Many of Indonesian oil experts preferred to work in other countries because of the much higher wages.

Indonesian oil graduates especially from ITB worked in many foreign mining companies because their skills are highly rewarded.

"To persuade them to return to Indonesia, the government needs to offer them an incentive namely that their salary in Indonesia will be 70 to 80 percent of what they receiced in their overseas emplolyment," he said.

A lack of oil experts in Indonesia will cause the high oil potential in Indonesia to be not optimally tapped.

The Japanese government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will invite nine developing countries in Asia to a seminar to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, for further discussions on management of nuclear power plants.

The invitation was conveyed by the Japanese foreign ministry in a release sent to ANTARA News in Tokyo on Friday, since those countries often voiced their intention to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes like the construction of a nuclear power plant.

The nine countries are Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Singapore, which will be provided with knowhow in the management of nuclear power plants based on the three Ss (security, safety and safeguard).

"Japan will send a number of its nuclear experts the seminar Hanoi to share their thoughts and views on nuclear management especially in relation to its security, safety and safeguard," an official at the Japanese foreign ministry said.

Japan in cooperation with the IAEA will discuss the management of nuclear power plants and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

The seminar will be a follow up to the results of the G8 Summit in Hokkaido in July 2008, which had called for a expanded initiative in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes

Computer security researchers warned that online social networking websites are playgrounds for hackers who can easily take advantage of people's trust.

Opportunities for mischief abound as users place intimate details of their lives on profile pages and install mini-applications made by strangers that don't always have their privacy at heart.

In a trend pioneered with tremendous success by Facebook, social networking websites have opened their operating platforms to let outside developers craft fun, hip, or functional software "widgets" that can be added to profile pages.

Malicious code can be hidden in such applications, computer security specialists Nathan Hamiel and Shawn Moyer said at a premier Black Hat conference in Las Vegas.

"I can't necessarily attack Facebook or MySpace, but I can attack their users all day long," Moyer told AFP. "Don't put anything on a Facebook account that you don't consider public."

People are prone to place faith in social networking widgets and links from friends, said Idea Information Security consultant Nathan Hamiel.

"People are going nuts adding applications they don't need," Hamiel told AFP.

"Every time they do that they are showing an implicit trust in whoever wrote the application, and most people don't know who that is."

Hamiel and Moyer showed peers software capable of plundering profile information, swiping people's "friends," or locking people out of their own MySpace pages.

A pair of MySpace engineers who attended the demonstration said that hacks are known risks in today's social platforms and that they had Hamiel's application deleted by the end of the talk.

Fake postings on comment boards advising people to update software are ways to trick social network users into downloading malicious software that can commandeer control of machines, Hamiel said.

"Social networks really don't care if you get pawned or not," Hamiel said, using slang referring to a computer user being dominated and humiliated by hackers.

"People know if they go on a computer and download a program they could get a virus. They don't have the same view of how dangerous that can be on a social networking site."

Go rouge

Hackers can write seemingly legitimate widgets that "go rogue" after spreading to enough social network members, according to Hamiel.

"It is not a problem with a particular site," Hamiel said. "It is a problem with social networking in general."

Even if tainted applications are deleted, the odds are that the data from
profile pages was already copied onto an outside computer, according to Hamiel
and Moyer.

"MySpace and Facebook have no control over my servers," Hamiel said. "Once the content is moved from their site they have no control over that."

Those thinking that they will stay safe by not having social networking pages may still vulnerable to trouble, according to the security specialists.

Another ruse is to create social networking profiles for people using information mined from the Internet and then for the imposters to send out "friends requests."

Those that take the bait give open doors to the private data in their
profiles.

"We think you should make a profile for yourself before somebody else does," Moyer said. "Just don't put anything there that you don't consider public. And trust, but verify when people want to be your friend." (Ant)

Titiek Puspa, the singer-songwriter who started her career more than half a century ago (no less than president Sukarno chose her stage name when she was starting out in the 1950s), has earned the honor (her recently published biography is titled ‘A Legendary Diva’). The grande dame of Indonesian entertainment, who recently moved to a swank South Jakarta apartment, is a survivor who has come through the 15-minute fame limitation to remain one of the country’s most popular performers.

Childhood ambition?
I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, because there were a lot of children around and I wanted to help out my parents. I passed the test and had some classes, and the children were always laughing and happy. But I had been taking part in singing contests for a long time, and winning them, and I got to thinking it would be better to entertain more people than just a classroom.

What and who make you laugh?
Lots of things, especially people who talk all over the place in a crazy way. But I laugh easily, and am touched easily. There are lots of clever comedians today. My favorite, though, was Bing Slamet, because he was a great singer, good at everything he did, and was a very good person.

What makes you sad?
Why do people have to talk bad about others? Why don’t we do good for others, do our best. Don’t ask for things, do what you must. I’m 70, nearly 71, and I’m still working, thank God.

Favorite food?
Fresh fruit and vegetables. I’m very careful about what I eat. I can have a free day to eat other things, but it has to be in moderation.
Happiest moment in my life ...
When I had my first grandchild. It was like heaven. Everything smelled great and was in bloom, and the world was shining bright. I couldn’t sleep from being so happy and thinking about that baby.
And darkest ...
When my family is sick and suffering, like my older sibling right now who is ill. And when this country has problems. I remember in 1998 when there was the looting and robberies and rapes, I was so distraught that I was affected physically, I went lame for a time. It was that bad.

Favorite song?
There are so many, including the ones I wrote myself. Songs are my medicine, my vitamins, they make my life better.

Does gossip get to you?
I’ve been gossiped about since way back when. Let them say what they want. I don’t get angry and I never come out and refute the stuff. God sees what I do – it’s between me and Him. But I’m not what they say.

If you could go back in time, what would you change?
I worked from when I was young and often only got to see my family at night. When I had my own family, I made sure to spend time with my children at home. We have the kind of relationship that we can talk about anything together. But I wish that I could have made my own parents happy when they were alive. They were gone by the time I became a success.

What would you do to change the world?
I want every person to have love, a smile and good words for others. It would be a better world with everybody helping each other. Don’t take away others’ rights and hurt them. Remember there is karma.

Your hopes in life in three words?
I want health, peace and welfare.

Dream dinner guests, living or dead?
Too many! If I could, my mother and father, because they taught me good lessons about life, I learned so much from them.
I always have with me ...
Apart from money, makeup, my cell phone and a pen, because I like to jot down things now and then.
Favorite place in the world ...
Indonesia, we have such beauty in this country.
My best trait ...
Which one (laughs)? I always try not to hurt people, to make them happy.

What have you learned from getting older?
I can say that in my 70s, I have great blessings. I can still stand on my own two feet, I don’t have to ask for anything. I just came back from Paris and Prague, where I also got to perform. And the audience was full of Europeans and they were cheering for our music.

Keep healthy, so you can do the best job possible, be committed and professional.

What does money mean to you?
It fulfills a need, but it’s not everything. Don’t be made stupid or be poisoned by money. Just get enough to live.

How do you want to die?
From way back I’ve left it up to God. When I was nearing 70, I wrote the song Terimakasih Tuhan (Thank you God). I’m resigned to death, whenever it comes.

IPB produces noodle made of corn

The Bogor Agriculture Institute (IPB) has produced a noodle made of corn in an effort to reduce dependency on mostly imported wheat flour, a food scientist said Wednesday.

"Corn noodle has comparable nutritional values with noodles made of wheat flour," said Southeast Asia Food and Agricultural Science and Technology (SEAFAST) Center head, Purwiyatno Hariyadi.

"Corn noodle even has an extra advantage for its pro vitamin A content."

In the production process, the noodle can use 100 percent corn or a mixture of corn and wheat flour with a composition of 25 percent corn and 75 percent wheat flour.

The color of pure corn noodle is more yellowish due to its pro vitamin A content, while the mixed noodle is the same color as the noodle made of wheat flour.

Corn noodle's taste is similar to the wheat flour noodle, but it is less chewy.

Purwiyatno admitted the production was still in laboratory scale, while mass production may require some adjustment.

"We can also add a number of micronutrients," he said.

Google launches Knol, rival to Wikipedia

Google has launched its rival to Wikipedia, the sprawling online encyclopaedia that ranks among the world's most visited websites.

Like Wikipedia, Google's Knol - its term for a unit of knowledge - is a collection of user-generated articles on specific topics.

But whereas Wikipedia lets any visitor make alterations to its online pages and contributions remain anonymous, Knol articles are authored by an individual and stress personal opinion.

The aim of the free service is to "help people share their knowledge", the internet search and advertising giant said.

Google would "not serve as an editor in any way" or "bless content", leaving editorial responsibilities up to the author.

It also plans to reward authors of popular posts by enabling them to profit from their entries, if they allow Google to place advertisements on their pages.

The more page views the article gets, the more a contributor can earn.

Google generates profits from online advertising targeted at users of its free online services and Knol is seen as an attempt to boost income by attracting some of the millions who use Wikipedia, which is non-profit and advertising-free.

Mr Dupont denied Knol was designed as a "Wikipedia killer", telling the New York Times: "Google is very happy with Wikipedia being so successful. Anyone who tries to kill them would hurt us."

By yesterday, the fledgling project appeared to be gaining little ground on the seven-year-old Wikipedia, which boasts more than 8.2 million articles in more than 200 languages (nearly 2.5 million in English).

The highlighted knols on the site's front page were mainly related to health issues such as migraines or irritable bowel syndrome and searches for entries on Barack Obama, John McCain, God, Madonna and even Wikipedia all returned a "no results found" page.

Some have questioned whether Knol marks a shift in Google's identity of "organising the world's information" to creating and publishing information that could potentially compromise its neutrality in organising search results.

Google has stressed its Search Quality team will rank knol entries "appropriately when they appear in Google search results".

Danny Sullivan, editor of searchengineland.com, tested Google's assertion "that just because content sits on Google's Knol site, it won't gain any ranking authority from being part of the Knol domain" a day after its launch.

"I found one third of the pages listed on the Knol home page that I tested ranked in the top results," he writes.

"I came away feeling that being on Knol does indeed give pages an advantage they might not get if they'd been hosted on some other brand new website."

While Wikipedia has officially welcomed Knol, Florence Devouard, the Wikimedia Foundation chair, wrote last December: "Knol is probably our biggest threat since the creation of Wikipedia." [Telegraph]

Every custom domain URL (primary or secondary) requires 2 settings. With "Buy A Domain", they are made for you. When you use "Advanced Settings" or Google Apps, you have to make each setting on your own.

Apple named as No 3 US computer maker

Apple's success is far from confined to the iPhone. The iconic device maker is now the third largest computer maker in the US according to a report Thursday by research firm Gartner.

According to Gartner, Mac sales grew 38 per cent in the second quarter to 1.4 million unit, behind only Dell with 5.25 million sales and HP with 4.16 million sales.

Rival firm IDC gave Apple slightly lower numbers, with the result that it was in fourth place behind Acer/Gateway/PackardBell.

For the worldwide market Apple was in sixth place.

The impressive performance came less than a week after Apple debuted its iPhone 3G and garnered over a million sales worldwide over its first weekend.
